    A D.C. woman has pleaded guilty in the death of her 3-year-old daughter after the young girl accidentally ingested pills containing fentanyl in 2022.

    A D.C. woman has pleaded guilty in the death of her 3-year-old daughter after the young girl accidentally ingested pills containing fentanyl in 2022.

    On Tuesday, 28-year-old Sasha McCoy pleaded guilty on the charge of voluntary manslaughter. Her plea calls for an agreed upon 4-to-10-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release.

    In October 2022, McCoy found her daughter unresponsive after putting her down for a nap. A small bag containing pills was later found on the bed. Her daughter later died at the hospital “from fentanyl and fluorofentanyl intoxication,” a medical examiner said.

    A drug analysis later found one of the pills was half a Xanax, and the others contained fentanyl along with other substances.

    Medical examiners concluded that the little girl died from fentanyl and fluorofentanyl intoxication, according to a Justice Department news release.

    McCoy was charged with the girl’s death in February 2024, with prosecutors alleging that McCoy allowed her daughter to ingest a lethal dose of fentanyl.

    She is due back in court for a sentencing hearing on Jan. 3, 2025.

    D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr., pleaded not guilty Thursday to a bribery charge during an arraignment in U.S. District Court.

    White was indicted last week by a federal grand jury, accused of agreeing to accept $156,000 in cash payments from a business owner in exchange for help in renewing their companies’ violence-interruption contracts with the D.C. government.

    Prosecutors say he was caught on video taking money from the business owner and agreeing to accept more payments.

    White, who has represented Ward 8 on the D.C. Council since 2017, was the chairman of the Committee on Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs that oversaw some of the District’s violence-interruption efforts.

    The two contracts between the unnamed business owner and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement and Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services were valued at $5.2 million.

    Overall, the business owner paid White a total of $35,000 in four meetings between June and August.

    D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said he plans to remove White as chairman of the council’s Committee on Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs. White would be disqualified from holding public office if he’s convicted.

    White has yet to announce if he plans to withdraw his name from the Ward 8 ballot, though there has been no public petition for him to step down.

    Currently on the November ballot for the Council seat is White and Republican primary winner Nate Derenge, alongside write-in candidates Markus Batchelor, Michael Brown, Khadija Long and Olivia Henderson. WTOP news partner 7News reported that White attended the first Ward 8 political forum Wednesday evening.

    Two of the five girls who are charged with first and second-degree murder in the killing of 64-year-old Reginald “Reggie” Brown are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

    While walking home on Oct. 17, 2023, Brown, 64, was attacked by five girls, ranging in age from 12 to 15, in the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest.

    The girls, who were caught on surveillance camera footage, were seen kicking, beating and hitting Brown with his own belt until he was found unresponsive by police. He was pronounced dead minutes after he was found.

    A 13-year-old suspect, who was 12 at the time of the unprovoked attack on Brown, sustained a gunshot wound in an unrelated incident inside her home in March 2024. It is unknown if she will appear in court Tuesday.

    One of the five girls accepted a plea deal in August and the last two girls are due before a judge in November, according to The Washington Post.
