    If the Detroit Lions are serious about stabilizing and upgrading the interior of their offensive line in 2026, one name keeps popping up for good reason: David Edwards.

    According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Lions are a logical landing spot for the Buffalo Bills guard, especially with Graham Glasgow widely viewed as unlikely to return.

    Why Edwards Makes Sense for Detroit

    Glasgow has been a steady presence, but most around the league believe he has played his final snap in Detroit. Replacing him won’t be easy — unless the Lions aim higher.

    That’s where Edwards comes in.

    At just 28 years old, Edwards has quietly been one of the best value signings in football over the last two seasons. He started at guard for Buffalo while making just $6 million total over two years, all while holding his own against top AFC competition.

    From a pure performance standpoint, Edwards would represent more than a replacement — he’d be an upgrade.

    What the Numbers Say

    According to Pro Football Focus during the 2025 season, Edwards posted:

    • 71.4 overall grade (19th among guards)
    • 73.0 pass-blocking grade (14th among guards)
    • 69.0 run-blocking grade
    • Only 3 sacks allowed on over 1,000 offensive snaps
    • Just 3 penalties all season

    That’s exactly the kind of consistency Detroit values up front, especially with Jared Goff relying heavily on clean interior pockets.

    Why Buffalo May Let Him Walk

    The big question isn’t whether Edwards deserves a raise — it’s whether Buffalo can afford him.

    With Joe Brady promoted to head coach, there’s an understandable desire to keep the offensive line intact. But the Bills are facing tough choices. They have two starting offensive linemen hitting free agency, and re-signing both would be extremely expensive.

    Some projections around the league believe Edwards could command close to $20 million per year on the open market. If Buffalo chooses to re-sign only one starter and replace the other through the draft, Edwards could be the odd man out.

    Why Detroit Is the Fit

    The Lions have shown a clear pattern under Brad Holmes:

    • Pay premium money for premium offensive line play
    • Value guards who can pass protect first
    • Invest in players entering or in their prime years

    Edwards checks all three boxes.

    If Detroit moves on from Glasgow, shifting those resources toward a younger, ascending guard like Edwards would align perfectly with their long-term vision.

    THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Running back Cam Akers will not play for the Los Angeles Rams against Carolina on Sunday after missing two days of practice this week for what coach Sean McVay called personal reasons.

    McVay would not give further details Friday when asked about Akers’ circumstances, though he did say the Rams’ leading rusher was not away from the team for the past two days because he was injured.

    When asked whether Akers would be part of the Rams going forward, McVay replied: “We’re working through some different things right now, so hopefully you guys understand and respect that.”

    McVay also said the team wanted to keep it “in-house,” later adding that the personal reasons cited for Akers’ absence are “more like we’re dealing with things internally. This is kind of uncharted territory. … He’s going to be OK.”

    Akers practiced with the defending Super Bowl champions Wednesday, but wasn’t with the team Thursday or Friday.

    “He’s good,” said running back Darrell Henderson, who is likely to get most of the Rams’ workload in Akers’ absence. “We trust that he’s going to be good. So he’ll be all right. We’re going to do this for him.”

    Henderson claimed he doesn’t know much about the issues keeping Akers away from the Rams.

    “That’s on Coach and Cam to talk,” Henderson said. “I don’t know what’s going on. … You all probably know more than I know. I just come in and go to work.”

    But when asked if he thinks Akers will be back with the Rams this season, Henderson replied: “Oh yeah.”

    Akers has rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown this season for the Rams, who have the NFL’s worst rushing offense at just 62.4 yards per game. Akers has been unproductive in the ground game by most statistical measures while running behind an offensive line missing three starters and two backups due to injury.

    McVay publicly called for a better effort earlier this season from Akers, who responded with mild surprise and acceptance. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen said Thursday that the Rams need more “creativity” from their running backs, particularly when obvious running lanes aren’t available.

    Akers played in each of the Rams’ first five games this season, but is averaging just 3.0 yards per carry after gaining 33 yards on 13 attempts last week against Dallas. He has acknowledged he is still attempting to recover his peak explosiveness after tearing his Achilles tendon during preseason workouts last year.

    Henderson didn’t get a carry against the Cowboys, but was used extensively as a receiver. He has only 138 yards rushing this season.

    The Rams (2-3) have lost back-to-back games. Los Angeles’ bye is next week, and when asked if the Rams expect to be in the market for a running back over the break, McVay replied: “I don’t know. I wouldn’t say no, ever. We’ll always explore our options if there’s chances to upgrade. That’s probably not something that’s at the forefront.”

    The Rams’ other active running backs Sunday are likely to be veteran Malcolm Brown and recent practice squad signee Ronnie Rivers.

    Brown spent six seasons with the Rams from 2015-20, and he scored the first touchdown in SoFi Stadium history. After a one-year stint with the Miami Dolphins, he returned to LA last month.

    Akers rushed for 625 yards as a rookie out of Florida State in 2020 after the Rams selected him with their highest pick in any of the past five drafts. He recovered remarkably quickly from the Achilles injury to rejoin Los Angeles for the regular-season finale and its playoff run to a championship.

    According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Akers has minus-0.98 rush yards over expected per attempt this season, which is the second-worst performance in the league. He has just 86 yards after contact and has broken only one tackle all season.

    NOTES: LG David Edwards will visit with concussion specialists in Pittsburgh, McVay said. Edwards is on injured reserve after returning last Sunday from a one-week absence with an apparent concussion, only to take another hit to the head against the Cowboys. … WR Cooper Kupp, DT Aaron Donald and TE Tyler Higbee are all expected to play Sunday despite being questionable with minor injuries. Rookie DB Cobie Durant (hamstring) and backup QB John Wolford (neck) are also questionable.

    LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams have placed left guard David Edwards on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

    Edwards left the Rams’ 22-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and was evaluated for a concussion. He was placed in the concussion protocol for the second time in two weeks.

    Prior to the Rams’ Week 4 game on Monday night, Edwards told the team he “was a little bit foggy.” He returned to play in Week 5 but left the game in the fourth quarter after a collision in the backfield.

    Edwards was replaced in the game by Bobby Evans, who started at the position in Week 4. The Rams have started nine different offensive linemen this season.

    The Rams also signed center Matt Skura to the active roster and waived running back Jake Funk.

    THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams guard David Edwards has entered the concussion protocol and will not play on Monday night after telling the team that he “was a little bit foggy,” head coach Sean McVay said on Saturday.

    “Obviously, you can’t be too careful with some of these things,” McVay said. “We went through the protocol, he’ll be in concussion protocol right now, and so as a result of that, he’ll be out for the game.

    “But it was great for him to be able to kind of communicate. We took the right steps, especially, with the situation that occurred on Thursday. But really just in general, regardless of whether or not that happened with [Miami Dolphins QB] Tua [Tagovailoa], [it’s] something we take very serious and I appreciate him handling it the right way.”

    On Thursday night, Tagovailoa was taken off the field on a stretcher after his head hit the turf late in the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals. Tagovailoa was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and discharged later that night.

    Just four days earlier, in the Dolphins’ Week 3 win over the Buffalo Bills, Tagovailoa left the game after hitting his head on the ground. He was taken to the locker room and tested for a concussion but returned to the game.

    McVay said the situation with Tagovailoa has brought “heightened awareness” to the concussion protocol.

    “Whether that happened or not would have zero to do with our approach with David Edwards,” McVay said. “But I know there’s been a lot of, I don’t want to say speculation, but a lot of questions in that situation and particular brought light to a lot of questions.

    “I feel really good about the processes and the procedures that have been in place since I’ve been here and in this role as it relates to the communication with the medical group. I know the NFL’s doing everything in their power to do the right thing by the players and I fully believe that.”

    McVay said “there’s a good chance” that guard Bobby Evans will replace Edwards against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
