    You might still be easing into 2026, but awards season is already out in full force. In a twist from the usual schedule, the calendar kicked off with the Critics’ Choice Awards, and just a week later, it’s time for arguably one of the most fun ceremonies of the season: the Golden Globe Awards.

    The Golden Globes celebrate the best in the film and television industry; this year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another garnered the most nominations for a film with nine, closely followed by Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, which netted eight noms. The White Lotus leads the pack with six television nods, tailed by Adolescence with five.

    Tonight, the Golden Globes return to the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, with Nikki Glaser once again taking on hosting duties in a repeat from last year. The 83rd Golden Globe Awards also mark the first time that podcasts will be honored, as this year the show is introducing a Best Podcast category. So far, announced presenters include Amanda Seyfried, Ana de Armas, Ayo Edebiri, Charli XCX, Chris Pine, Colman Domingo, Connor Storrie, Dakota Fanning, Dave Franco, Diane Lane, George Clooney, Hailee Steinfeld, Hudson Williams, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, Joe Keery, Judd Apatow, Julia Roberts, Justin Hartley, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Hart, Kyra Sedgwick, Lalisa Manobal, Luke Grimes, Macaulay Culkin, Marlon Wayans, Melissa McCarthy, Mila Kunis, Miley Cyrus, Minnie Driver, Orlando Bloom, Pamela Anderson, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Sean Hayes, Snoop Dogg, Wanda Sykes, Will Arnett and Zoë Kravitz.

    The evening always begins with a dazzling red carpet, when A-list guests arrive in their finest fashions. The Golden Globes tend to offer a more exciting spectacle in terms of style; it’s still a black tie event, but it’s not as buttoned-up as, say, the Academy Awards, which is why it’s one of our favorite red carpets of the entire year.   • Movie Review: ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ brings back the magic with new faces and tricks

    Ten years or so between installments of a successful Hollywood franchise is a lifetime. When it comes to the third “Now You See Me” movie — poof! — time doesn’t matter. These magicians still got it.

    “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” does what sequels apparently must do these days — load up the characters, return to favorite bits and go global — but nails the trick, a crowd-pleasing return that already has a fourth in the works.

    “It is very good to be back,” says Jesse Eisenberg as the egotistical, perfectionist J. Daniel Atlas, the brains behind the magician-robber outfit. It’s hard to argue with that sentiment on the strength of this outing, directed with assurance by Ruben Fleischer.

    “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” acts as a sort of pivot, bringing back the veterans — all of them, in various forms — as well as introducing three Gen Z eat-the-rich magicians played by Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith and Ariana Greenblatt. They’re clearly the future. It’s in good (sleight of) hands.

    The movie starts off with a clever rip-off of nasty crypto bros in Brooklyn and expands to scenes in Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, France and South Africa. It’s got Nazis, “Harry Potter” vibes and some Louvre museum heist energy. We didn’t need the F1 chase through Abu Dhabi, but no one’s complaining.

    The original Four Horsemen — Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher — are supplemented by Lizzy Caplan, who had replaced Fisher in the second installment. Morgan Freeman returns as the gravel-voiced mentor.

    The prize at the movie’s heart is a diamond — but no mere bauble. It’s the Heart Diamond, the largest ever discovered, with a price tag of half a billion dollars. It’s the size of a smoked turkey leg.

    The diamond is owned by a particularly vile South African diamond mine scion who uses her ultra-wealth to launder money for warlords and arms dealers. She is played deliciously by Rosamund Pike with a snide disdain and a nifty Afrikaner accent.

    The secretive magic society known as The Eye unites the old Horsemen and the new trio (the Three Ponies?) to steal the diamond, stored in one of those multilevel, biometric “Mission: Impossible”-style bunkers.

    Capturing it won’t enhance their bank statements. Remember, they’re all really anti-capitalist, share-the-wealth magicians — most likely democratic socialists, in vogue right now. “This is a chance to drive a stake through the devil herself,” Eisenberg’s character says.

    Hollywood is funny that way, creating a multimillion-dollar franchise on the back of heroic left-wing activist characters and convincing the UAE to set it on their streets.

    At first, it’s hard, with eight heroes rushing around, to figure out the primary dynamics. The older Horsemen are strangely muted here — except for Caplan, a hoot — and the young need some seasoning. Intergenerational bickering keeps the movie alive.

    There’s a quick stop at a French chateau where some real magic takes place, literally. The last two “Now You See Me” installments got very green-screen and CGI when it came to effects, but the third very refreshingly steps back into old-fashioned trickery. In a single take, we see each of the heroes try to top the others with a card trick, misdirection or illusion.

    There’s also a hall of mirrors, an upside-down room, an infinity staircase, a perspective-warping room and a nifty escape from a chamber filling with sand. Kudos to the filmmakers for embracing physical tricks over digital trickery. Also, cute use of Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra.”

    All this leads to a huge showdown between the diamond princess and our motley magicians. You won’t guess who’s been pulling the strings all this time. Seriously, you won’t. And a new generation of magician-thieves are minted. That was a hard trick to pull off.

    “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” a Lionsgate release in theaters Friday, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for some strong language, violence and suggestive references. Running time: 112 minutes. Three stars out of four.

  • Pope Leo XIV reveals a very wholesome list of favorite films. You expected different?

    The “Purge” movies are missing from the list, as are the entries in the “Saw” franchise. There are no “Evil Dead” titles. “The Exorcist” is suspiciously absent.

    The list, in this case, is the favorite four films of Pope Leo XIV, f.k.a. Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago. The pontiff released the list via video ahead of a planned meeting Saturday with luminaries from the world of cinema.

    To avoid the risk of being played off the stage by the academy’s orchestra, let’s share the winners quickly:

    1. “It’s a Wonderful Life,” 1946
    2. “The Sound of Music,” 1965
    3. “Ordinary People,” 1980
    4. “Life Is Beautiful,” 1997

    That’s it. No “The Agony and the Ecstasy.” No “Pope Joan” or “Spotlight” or “Conclave,” for obvious reasons. No “Sister Act” or “Oh, God!” or any of the associated sequels, for less obvious reasons.

    As a matter of fact, not a single comedy at all, much less a goofy comedy. And on either the drama or comedy fronts, the pope definitely could have chosen at least one flick set in his former neck of the woods. Think “The Blues Brothers,” “Home Alone,” “The Untouchables,” “High Fidelity,” “Eight Men Out” or “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” (Think “Chicago,” for goodness’ sake.)

    Pope Leo will apparently be meeting Saturday with Hollywood types including, Variety reports, actors Monica Bellucci, Cate Blanchett, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Viggo Mortensen and Chris Pine, plus directors Spike Lee, George Miller, Giuseppe Tornatore and Gus Van Sant.

    Seems the pope “has expressed his desire to deepen dialogue with the World of Cinema, and in particular with actors and directors, exploring the possibilities that artistic creativity offers to the mission of the Church and the promotion of human values,” according to a statement obtained by CNN.

    That sounds all well and good, and a person can’t really go wrong with the movies on the pope’s list — two of the four are best picture Oscar winners, and the other two are best picture nominees.

    That said, let’s shed a tiny tear for the exclusion of “Bruce Almighty,” if only because Morgan Freeman could use a little papal recognition too.

  • The men of ‘Regretting You’ on Colleen Hoover, romantic movies and shirtless scenes

    The plot of the new Colleen Hoover adaptation “Regretting You” is a little wild. There’s romance, an affair, unrequited love, death and even a baby with questionable paternity.

    Dave Franco, whose character has long pined for Allison Williams’ character but ends up having a child with her sister who is having an affair with her brother-in-law, said someone recently exclaimed to him, “What in the Maury Povich was that?”

    Tabloid talk show fodder though they might be, Hoover’s novels have hit a nerve with audiences and Hollywood. “It Ends With Us” made over $350 million worldwide against a $25 million budget and “Regretting You,” in theaters Friday, is one of several big-screen adaptations in the works.

    “I think Colleen Hoover is incredible when it comes to dealing with these messy family dynamics that feel relatable,” Franco said. “I think anyone who sees this film can attach themselves to at least one of the characters. It’s juicy, it’s dramatic.”

    Scott Eastwood plays Franco’s best friend and Williams’ husband (the one having an affair with his sister-in-law). Mason Thames plays the high schooler who starts dating Eastwood and Williams’ teenage daughter, played by Mckenna Grace, after her dad and aunt die in a car crash. Complicated does not even scratch the surface.

    The Associated Press gathered the men behind the drama, Franco, Eastwood and Thames, for freewheeling chat about the film, romantic touchstones, shirtless scenes and Eastwood’s Taylor Swift music video. Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity.

    AP: Scott seems to have the most romantic credits to his name, even a Taylor Swift music video.

    FRANCO: Scott, I don’t know if you know this, did anyone tell you that we all watched the “Wildest Dreams” video on set?

    EASTWOOD: No.

    THAMES: I remember that! We all did.

    FRANCO: Mckenna didn’t realize that you were the guy. Like this is a video dear to her heart, and she put it together in the moment: Scott’s the guy from the “Wildest Dreams” video. She immediately called her mom. She goes “Scott’s the guy.” And we hear her mom through the phone go, “No!” You have a place in a lot of people’s hearts with that video.

    EASTWOOD: I’d never met Taylor Swift before. She called me out of the blue. She said, “Hey this is Taylor.” I’m, like, Taylor who?

    THAMES: I told Scott this the first day I met him, that I thought, before I knew him, from years in advance: best-looking man I’ve ever seen.

    FRANCO: And what was Scott’s reaction?

    EASTWOOD: I’m so sorry, this is your interview.

    AP: Romantic dramas, movies that make you cry, seem to be the kind of films that stick with people, like the outpouring of love for “The Way We Were” when Robert Redford died. What are those movies for you?

    EASTWOOD: It’s “The Notebook.”

    THAMES: “Spider-Man 2.”

    EASTWOOD: Didn’t see that one coming.

    FRANCO: I’ll go with “Stand By Me.” Classic, timeless, gives you a little bit of everything. You got the drama, you got the laughter, you’ve got the tears. What about “Jerry Maguire”?

    EASTWOOD: That’s a tear, like not a cry.

    FRANCO: I’m letting those tears fall, Scott. I think our director, Josh Boone, his guiding lights might have been Cameron Crowe: “Jerry Maguire,” “Almost Famous,” “Say Anything.” Those movies that have a little bit of everything and just feel timeless.

    AP: Were there any touchstones you used for your characters? Iconic romantic leads?

    THAMES: “The Notebook” was mine. Me and Mckenna watched “The Notebook” and “10 Things I Hate About You” and also “The Fault in Our Stars.”

    FRANCO: In “Regretting You,” you guys have that really strong passionate pull to each other. It’s almost Romeo and Juliet.

    THAMES: That’s kind of what we wanted. That’s what’s so special that we haven’t seen in so long from movies like this, is kind of the magic and the passion between two love interests.

    FRANCO: Scott, who were your reference characters?

    EASTWOOD: Mostly all of my romantic movies.

    FRANCO: Name them! Name them!

    EASTWOOD: Guys, this is a long list.

    FRANCO: I used the show “Normal People,” just because those characters go through this journey over the years and they have these peaks and valleys and there’s this really strong history between them. Also those actors are just very subtle, very real, very vulnerable.

    AP: Mason’s character in particular seems like a healthy role model for teenagers dating.

    THAMES: At the end of the day, he’s just a dude. I think this is the character that I’ve played that most resembles me.

    FRANCO: I’m going to give him a compliment. When you look back at like James Dean and Montgomery Clift, they were these actors who obviously were very strong and powerful and had a great presence, but they were super vulnerable and just not afraid to show that kind of sensitive side. I think Mason has that in spades.

    THAMES: I paid him a lot to say that.

    AP: There’s a bit of voyeurism involved being in something like a Colleen Hoover adaptation. What’s your comfort level with being seen as a kind of heartthrob?

    FRANCO: Scott should kick this off.

    EASTWOOD: It’s a two. But the scale is one to three. So it’s in the middle. I don’t pay attention to that stuff. I just think we made a cool movie. That’s all we can really do. Try to pay tribute to the books.

    FRANCO: Scott is shirtless in this movie for a little bit.

    EASTWOOD: That’s a lie!

    FRANCO: That’s NOT a lie.

    EASTWOOD: When am I shirtless in the movie?

    FRANCO: On the beach!

    EASTWOOD: Oh that’s right.

    THAMES: That’s why you should go see “Regretting You.” I’m also shirtless. He’s also shirtless.

    FRANCO: No, they cut my shirtless scene.

  • Can Colleen Hoover’s ‘Regretting You’ Help Save Movie Theaters?

    This weekend, Regretting You, the second Colleen Hoover book-to-movie adaptation following last year’s tumultuous release of It Ends With Us, heads to theaters. Written by Susan McMartin and directed by The Fault in Our StarsJosh Boone, the film centers on two star-crossed couples—Morgan (Allison Williams) and Jonah (Dave Franco), as well as Morgan’s teen daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) and her classmate Miller (Mason Thames), who works at his local AMC Theater. His job isn’t integral to the movie’s soapy romance plot—yet the theater chain’s logo is splashed across multiple scenes.

    There are plenty of other sponcon moments in Regretting You: lingering shots of Starry soda, a storyline lifted from the book involving Jolly Ranchers, and repeated scenes where Williams’s character watches Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. (RHOSLC star Heather Gay recently hosted a screening for the movie in her Utah hometown.) But AMC’s integration into the movie feels far more brazen. Some of the most pivotal points in Clara and Miller’s relationship take place within the theater’s walls—most memorably, a scene where Clara halts their makeout session (again, at Miller’s place of work), to declare that she’s a virgin as Clueless plays onscreen. (The obvious virgin-who-can’t-drive joke goes unsaid in the movie.)

    AMC has also announced a Regretting You sweepstakes, hosted specially themed screenings, and promoted the movie on social media. Reddit users picked up on the AMC promotion from the trailer alone—and so have multiple film critics since watching the movie. “A truly deranged amount of AMC product placement,” wrote Indie Wire, with The Hollywood Reporter calling the integration “agonizingly unsubtle” in nature. That review also notes the multiple “Paramount plugs,” particularly in relation to Miller’s love of movies. His teenage bedroom is practically a shrine to Paramount Pictures releases of yesteryear—some more realistic for an adolescent boy to idolize (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Patriot Games) than others (who showed this kid Terms of Endearment?).

    Vanity Fair has reached out to representatives for both Paramount Pictures and AMC Theatres, but has yet to hear back about the terms of a potential partnership. But it’s not hard to draw the connection, given that AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron said that he expects Paramount to increase its theatrical release slate under the leadership of chairman and CEO David Ellison following the company’s sale to Ellison’s Skydance Media in August. Ellison told CNBC at the time that “we’re going to invest into our studios business” with Paramount releasing 6 to 8 movies next year, and increasing to 15 in 2027.
