    SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to drop the arrest warrant for a former soldier wanted in the deaths of his three young daughters because the U.S. Marshals Service says the man is dead.

    Authorities in Washington state found remains believed to belong to Travis Decker in a remote wooded area of central Washington last week, but investigators are still waiting for DNA results to confirm the man’s identity.

    Still, in a court document filed Wednesday, U.S. Attorney S. Peter Serrano said the U.S. Marshals Service has advised prosecutors that Decker is dead.

    Law enforcement teams had searched for more than three months for Decker after the bodies of his daughters — 9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker and 5-year-old Olivia Decker — were found in June at a campground near Leavenworth.

    The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy determined they died from suffocation. They had been bound with zip ties and had plastic bags placed over their heads.

    Decker, 32, had been with his daughters on a scheduled visit but failed to bring them back to his ex-wife, who a year ago said that his mental health issues had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable.

    He was often living out of his truck, she said in a petition seeking to restrict him from having overnight visits with their daughters until he found housing.

    Decker was an infantryman in the U.S. Army from March 2013 to July 2021 and deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014. He had training in navigation, survival and other skills, authorities said, and once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid.

Investigators just updated us to say that they are still actively searching for him. 12 News Kendall Keyes leads us off with the court documents and the mystery about what happened. I think that he is impulsive and he loves his children very much. The girls reported missing Friday by their mother after they did not return from *** scheduled visit with Decker. I think that he’s having *** Hard time and just needs something to make him feel better and for him that’s the girls. Her words haunting in hindsight. Decker now charged in the murder of his three daughters, 9-year-old Peyton, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia. Family 12 News spoke to in Wisconsin say the 32-year-old grew up in Pewaukee. Monday, investigators found Decker’s truck abandoned at *** campground in Chelan County, Washington. According to court documents, 12 news obtained approximately 75 to 100 yards past where the vehicle was located and down *** small embankment, CCSO deputies located the bodies of three school-aged children. Investigators saying each has *** plastic bag over the head. The likely cause of death was *** fixation, and their wrists were also zip tied. Kendall Keys joins us from the newsroom tonight. Kendall Decker’s on the run right now, right, Diana, and they say he could be dangerous because he’s former military with extensive training. Within the hour, law enforcement in Washington held *** news conference calling for Decker to turn himself in. Travis, if you’re listening, this is your opportunity to turn yourself in. Do the right thing, do what you need to do and take accountability for your actions. We’re not going to go away. We’re not going to rest, and we’re going to make sure we find you. Pewaukee police say they’re not involved in the search. We have yet to hear back from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office if they’ve been asked to assist in the investigation given Decker’s ties to Pewaukee.

    Sugarcane leads the nominations for the 2024 Critics Choice Documentary Awards, with eight nods, including for best documentary feature.

    Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story, Daughters and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story received six nominations each, including for best documentary feature.

    The other best documentary feature nominees are The Greatest Night in Pop, Jim Henson Idea Man, Music by John Williams, Piece by Piece, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin and Will & Harper.

    In addition to best doc feature, Sugarcane, which investigates the abusive legacy of Catholic-run Native American missionary schools, is up for best director and best new documentary filmmakers (Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie), best cinematography (Christopher LaMarca and Emily Kassie), best editing (Nathan Punwar and Maya Daisy Hawk), best historical documentary, best political documentary and best true crime documentary.

    Billy & Molly‘s Charlie Hamilton James is up for best new documentary filmmaker and, with Johnny Rolt and Bertie Gregory, best cinematography. The film is also nominated for best score (Erland Cooper), best narration (written by Hamilton James and performed by Billy and Susan Mail) and best science/nature documentary.

    Daughters is up for best director and best new documentary feature (Natalie Rae and Angela Patton), best cinematography (Michael Cambio Fernandez), best editing (Troy Lewis and Adelina Bichis) and best score (Kelsey Lu).

    Super/Man is up for best director (Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui), best editing (Otto Burnham), best score (Ilan Eshkeri), best archival documentary and best biographical documentary.

    The 9th annual Critics Choice Awards are set to be presented at a ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 10 at New York’s Edison Ballroom, hosted by Erich Bergen, which will be livestreamed on YouTube, X and Facebook.
