A demonstration voting machine at the Tarrant County Election Administration displays the screen voters will see after casting their ballot on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, in Fort Worth. The 2025 local runoff election will take place on June 7.

    FortWorth

The runoff election to fill North Texas’ Senate District 9 is set for Jan. 31, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office announced Monday.

Democrat Taylor Rehmet and Republican Leigh Wambsganss advanced to the runnoff to fill the North Texas district following a Nov. 4 special election. The seat is vacant after former Sen. Kelly Hancock, a North Richland Hills Republican, left for the Texas Comptroller’s office, where he currently serves as acting comptroller.

Early voting starts Jan. 21 and runs through Jan. 27.

Rehmet, a union leader and aircraft mechanic, was the top vote getter in the first round of voting, winning nearly 48% of the votes in the district, despite its being a historically Republican seat. Wambsganss, Patriot Mobile’s chief communication officer, got the second most votes— about 36%. Former Southlake Mayor John Huffman did not advance to the runoff.

The Tarrant County district includes much of Northwest Tarrant County, including part of Fort Worth and suburban communities like Southlake, Keller and North Richland Hills.

  • California to revoke 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses issued to immigrants

    [ad_1]

California will cancel 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses that had been issued to immigrants after officials said they extended beyond the date the drivers were allowed to work in the country — a violation of state law.

California requires driver’s licenses and work permits to have the same expiration dates, officials said. Notices were sent out on Nov. 6 to affected drivers warning their licenses would expire in 60 days.

The move comes amid an ongoing clash between the Trump administration and Gov. Gavin Newsom over California’s non-domiciled commercial driver’s licensing program. It also follows a nationwide audit of such programs after officials said a truck driver living in the U.S. illegally made a U-turn and caused a crash in Florida that killed three people.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg. My team will continue to force California to prove they have removed every illegal immigrant from behind the wheel of semi-trucks and school buses,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a written statement.

State officials, however, said the drivers were not “illegal immigrants” and that they were authorized to work in the country by the federal government.

“Once again, Sean ‘Road Rules’ Duffy fails to share the truth — spreading easily disproven falsehoods in a sad and desperate attempt to please his dear leader,” said Brandon Richards, a Newsom spokesman.

California is one of 19 states, in addition to Washington, D.C., that issues driving licenses to immigrants without legal status. Doing so allows people to work and travel safely, immigrant rights advocates argue.

But California — along with six other states, including Texas — came under scrutiny after an audit conducted by the Department of Transportation’s Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency responsible for preventing commercial motor vehicle-related deaths and injuries.

That audit found irregularities in the issuance of non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses.

Duffy said the audit found 25% of the licenses issued in California violated federal rules, including by extending well beyond an individual’s work permit end date.

In October, following the audit, Duffy withheld more than $40 million in transportation grants and claimed California was not only continuing to issue commercial driver’s licenses to immigrants living in the country illegally, but was also not enforcing new English language requirements for truckers.

Officials have refuted Duffy’s claims and said the state has complied with federal laws and regulations. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles said on its website that it was not issuing or renewing non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses as of Sept. 29.

Proposed new federal rules that would include mandatory federal immigration status checks, limiting the duration of the license and limiting eligibility to certain immigration visas, were temporarily put on hold by a federal appeals court this week.

The ruling provided relief for thousands of immigrants who were at risk of losing their licenses.

  • Evanston’s Temperance Beer Announces Closing Date

Evanston’s Temperance Beer Announces Closing Date

    [ad_1]

Evanston didn’t have a brewery before Temperance Beer Co. arrived at the end of 2013. The suburb’s first brewery was a historic moment, and the taproom quickly became one of the city’s finest with hits like Might Meets Right and Gatecrasher IPA. Temperance represented the rising popularity of the craft beer movement when home brewers crowded taprooms and stood in long lines for the latest release.

But times have changed. On Tuesday afternoon, Temperance founder Josh Gilbert announced the brewery would close on Sunday, October 27. All brewery tours had been canceled with refunds on their way. In a newsletter blast and Instagram post, Gilbert calls the craft beer world “barely recognizable” compared to a decade ago. “It’s difficult to even imagine that kind of excitement for a new brewery launch these days,” he writes.

Drinking habits have changed, and many craft beer fans have grown older, gravitating toward bourbon, non-alcoholic drinks, or even spiked seltzers Beer can be filling. Beyond beverages, the food scene has also shifted. Food trucks were a staple at Temperance, but the excitement for mobile eating has also snarled in this age of food delivery apps.

Temperance head brewer Claudia Jendron helped open the brewery in 2013 and was one of the few women in the industry. The taproom gave Evanston some credibility in the food and drink scene. Evanston has a long history of being a dry town. Customers, including Block Club Chicago co-founder Shamus Toomey and former Tribune beer and spirits writer Josh Noel, expressed their condolences with comments under the brewery’s Instagram post.

Now, fans have 12 days to relive the glory days before Temperance closes.

Are You Still Dating Like You Did in Your Teens and 20’s? | FindAQualityMan.com

    [ad_1]

As A Woman Over 50, Are You Still Dating Like You Did in Your Teens and 20’s?

You can read the blog below or watch it on YouTube by clicking here.

Doesn’t it feel like just yesterday you were in high school or college?

Chances are you still wear jeans and like many women our age, your hair is probably longer than your mother’s was at this time in her life.

They used to cut their hair once they were married.

With vibrant memories of your school years still floating around in your head, it’s likely you don’t even feel or look like you’re in your 50’s, 60’s or 70’s, right?

And that’s why when you’re out there looking for Mr. Right, you may be using the same criteria as you did in your teens or 20’s.

What this means is instead of wanting the handsome football captain like you did in high school, today you’re looking for his older version . . .  a man who is successful, good looking and charming.

But when you go online with your 20-year-old mindset of Mr. Right, who pops up?

Pictures of men who look like your grandfather did with grey, thinning hair, a belly and a boatload of baggage.

No wonder it seems like no one’s out there to date – they all seem too old for you!

A couple of years ago, I remember seeing a picture on Facebook of my handsome high school sweetheart who, by the way, did play football back in the day.

    I was shocked!

The young man I remembered had long black hair and wore cool “painter’s pants.”

In my mind, I expected an older version of this 18 year old man.

Instead, there he was with snow-white hair and a suit.

Although he was still handsome, he looked just like his father.

The thing is we don’t see ourselves aging and it’s why we are so shocked when we see men our age pop up on dating sites.

I remember a man once sharing with me that he was getting ready to post his picture on a dating site and his daughter asked him, “Dad, why are you posting a picture of you from 10 years ago?”

He confided in me that the picture was how he still saw himself and he hadn’t realized his face had aged so much since it was taken.

None of us likes to think we are getting older, but we are and so are the men we are looking to date.

There are some men who have kept their looks and have aged well.

Yet there are others who haven’t.

And when they haven’t, you usually end up passing them by especially online.

Yet if you’d met that same man in real life, you might think twice about his potential because all of a sudden his personality shines and that combined with his looks can make him one handsome man in your eyes.

Attraction is important.  But more important is who he is underneath those looks.

Wouldn’t you love to be with a man who will be at your side through thick and thin?

Who you can have fun with on weekends and on vacation?

Who sees you as beautiful even as you age?

He’s out there and might possibly be one of those men who’s staring back at you online from your computer screen.

That’s why I suggest if he seems nice, to give him a chance and go on a second, third and maybe even fourth date.

He just may turn out to be the wonderful, loving man you’ve been looking for.

  • Tavern on Rush 2.0 Gets a Late-September Opening Date and New Chef

Tavern on Rush 2.0 Gets a Late-September Opening Date and New Chef

    [ad_1]

Tavern on Rush is keeping its sign. When Phil Stefani and his children reopen the steakhouse across the street from its original space in Gold Coast, passersby will see the familiar oval-shaped black and gold logo with the tagline “an exciting restaurant.”

A revived Tavern on Rush should open on Monday, September 30 at 1015 N. Rush Street, according to a news release. That’s at the Thompson Hotel inside the former Nico Osteria, the lauded Italian seafood restaurant that opened in 2013 by the team behind the Publican and Big Star. Before Nico, the space housed Chicago’s outpost of the Whiskey, the chain of bars owned by Rande Gerber, the entrepreneur who also launched Casamigos Tequila with George Clooney. Gerber is married to model Cindy Crawford. The two are parents of model Kaia Gerber.

In both the Whiskey and Tavern’s heydays in the ’90s and ’00s, big-name touring musicians would stop by as would sports stars playing Chicago teams. Stefani would reminisce about seeing Michael Jordan smoke cigars. Tavern was known for its people-watching and bars, though it also served steakhouse fare. The original closed in October 2023, capping off 24 years on Rush Street. Stefani, a revered culinary figure in Chicago, was pushed out by his landlords, Fred Barbara and James Banks. In March, those two opened a new restaurant, the Bellevue, in the Tavern space.

    The revamped bar.

The two sides have apparently made peace as they’ve moved on to their new projects near Rush and Division, an area known for iconic restaurants like Gibsons and Maple & Ash. However, the biggest opening of the year may have been the return of Foxtrot, as its founder relaunches the corner store chain after its former founders left the brand in bankruptcy. Rosebud Restaurants hope for their own revival after crews demolished the building that housed Carmine’s at 1043 N. Rush Street. A new location should open inside the newly constructed building in the spring.

Tavern 2.0 takes up two floors and 16,000 square feet. It’s larger than the original and will have food from Chicago native chef Michael Wallach. “Wally” has worked at Weber Grill, Carlucci’s, Nick’s Fishmarket, McCormick & Schmick’s, and Park Grill. The experience fits with what Tavern customers expect near the infamous Viagra Triangle. Sample menu items include wagyu ravioli and perhaps a nod to Nico with seafood Cataplana.

In earlier interviews, Stefani’s children spoke about leaving their marks. For example, Gina Stefani said she was excited about focusing more on brunch as the Gold Coast needs more options. Gina Stefani enjoyed success at her West Loop restaurant, Mad Social, which built a strong brunch following. While the ’90s and ’00s may have seen long late-night lines flowing outside bars, the demand isn’t as strong and perhaps has shifted toward morning meals. Brunch will launch after the restaurant debuts. The bar program won’t just be about whisky, beer, and martinis. They’ll incorporate ingredients and spirits not associated with the original tavern using agave and pineapple. That’s one way to appeal to a younger crowd who might not be enthralled with the restaurant’s history.

Does Tavern still qualify as an “exciting restaurant?” Find out when it debuts in 10 days.

Tavern on Rush, 1015 N. Rush Street, planned for a Monday, September 30 opening.

    3 IMPORTANT Over 50’s Dating Questions . . . Answered!

    [ad_1]

    3 IMPORTANT Over 50’s Dating Questions . . . Answered

You can read the blog below or watch it on YouTube by clicking here.

Chances are you never thought you’d be dating as a woman over 50. Right?

    Dating was for young people.

In fact, for most of us, that was the last time we went on a date.

Yet, here you are today having to use a skill you haven’t used in eons.

Navigating the dating world isn’t always easy.

In fact, it can be quite hard to figure out what really works and that’s why today I want to answer 5 of the most important dating questions I’m often asked about dating at this time in your life.

Question #1 – I want a man to be my best friend. Is that possible?

Communication with a man isn’t the same as it is with your girlfriends.

Emotionally healthy men will be your best friend by keeping you safe, protected and provided for.

He will do his best to fix anything that makes your life easier for you.

To a man, his actions speak far louder than his words.

His actions are how he shows you he loves you.

As women, we love talking because the same hormone that gives you an orgasm is the same one that is released when you talk.

It’s why women verbally process everything. It feels good.

Men on the other hand preserve their words and can be quiet at times.

Not talking about life the way you would with your friends doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.

    He does.

He just doesn’t want to get involved in long conversations about things he has no interest in.

When you share involved and complicated stories about your friends and their families, a man can’t keep track of the point you are trying to make.

Unless it’s about you and taking care of you in some way, his eyes glaze over.

This is why it’s so important to have girlfriends who will happily process anything with you over your favorite martini or glass of wine.

Question #2 – Do I have to have chemistry right away to know if he’s the one for me?

If you said, “yes” then you aren’t alone.

Many women use chemistry as the basis for knowing whether or not a man is the right one for them.

Chemistry is amazing but it isn’t sustainable.

Without a friendship, no matter how much chemistry you have, the relationship can’t stand up to the test of time.

Many of my clients have not had immediate chemistry with their guy.

They thought he was cute but the zing was not there.

Yet, their guy seemed really nice so when he asked them out again, they said yes.

They ended up creating an amazing friendship and over time the chemistry kicked in.

If they had used immediate chemistry as the barometer for deciding if he was the one, they’d have missed a really great guy and a really great relationship with someone who absolutely loves and adores them.

Do yourself a favor . . . if a man is nice, give him a chance and get to know him.

Question #3 –  I always see a man’s potential even when he doesn’t. Is it ok to give him tips and advice to bring out the best in him?

    THIS IS A SOLID NO!!!!!!

One of men’s biggest pet peeves is about women who are always trying to change them whether it’s the clothes they wear, the food they eat or how they do their job.

One of the coolest things about emotionally healthy men is they love you exactly how you are.

That’s because men fall in love with the real you.

But women fall in love with a man’s potential then they try to fix him up to be his best.

If you don’t like who a man is the best thing you can do for yourself and for him, is to let him go and find a man you can love for exactly who he is.

Now for today’s inspiration that you can find love after 50!

I’m so grateful to have found Lisa Copeland and her Love After 50 coaching program. • Feeling invisible in the dating world

Feeling invisible in the dating world

    [ad_1]

Are you feeling invisible in the dating world?

You can read the blog below or watch it on YouTube by clicking here.

Today, we’re going to be talking about a really important topic that often comes up for women dating after 50.

Recently, one of the women on an episode of the “Golden Bachelor” shared with Gerry how invisible she felt in the dating world and that she doesn’t feel as significant as she did when she was younger.

Carrying a belief like this can hold you back from ever finding love after 50.

And the reason it can hold you back is that it comes from a deep place within the feeling of “I am not enough”.

This belief can be hard to overcome and that’s why today, I want to share 5 tips for how you can go from feeling invisible to feeling visible to men again at this time in your life.

    Let’s get started.

    #1 . . . Stop comparing yourself to when you were 20.

Feeling invisible can rear its head when you compare yourself to women in their 20’s who show up on social media with young beautiful faces and bodies and no wrinkles.

Or you might see an over 50’s actress looking amazing and you start thinking if I don’t look like that who’s going to want me?

    Guess what?

They don’t look like that either.

They’ve been altered by Al programming.

Just think of the stories about people seeing gorgeous models who in real life look nothing like their pictures.

So do yourself a favor and stop comparing yourself to AI generated photos. They aren’t real!

You also make yourself invisible to men when you look in the mirror and compare yourself to how you looked in your 20’s then compare it to how you look today.

This is a huge trigger for feeling like you’re not enough to catch a man’s eye.

    You are enough!

And, I want you to remember that a man doesn’t know what you looked like in your 20s.

I once showed a man I was dating a picture of myself from high school, and I asked him, “do you know who this is?”

He had no idea it was me.

So an easy way to shift your mindset about this is to remember that men don’t have a clue what you looked like in your 20’s.

They are attracted to you for who you are today as an amazing woman in her 50’s, 60’s or 70’s.

    Tip #2 . . . Dating Updating

You want to own your magnificence because you are magnificent and that can be hard at times which leads us to another step you can take to help you stop feeling invisible.

    It’s called Dating Updating.

Take a friend, go to your favorite store, and look for some new clothes that make you feel great.

    Try some new makeup.

    Try a new hairstyle.

Your goal is to find ways to feel really good about yourself.

Because when you feel good about yourself, you light up and that makes you very visible to men.

Tip #3 . . . Doing the Inner Work to get your confidence back.

If you’re not feeling enough, your glow is going to dim and you’re going to feel invisible.

A way to lift your confidence is to start appreciating yourself.

Ask yourself what you have to offer in a relationship.

You’re going to find it’s more than you probably even thought was there.

If you’re not sure what you have to offer, ask your friends, because they can objectively remind you of how amazing you really are.

The reason you want to feel good about yourself on the inside as well as the outside is that you can only attract from where you are emotionally, mentally and physically.

Also, know that men have told me over and over again how turned on they are by confident women.

Feeling confident, makes you glow which makes you visible and gorgeous both inside and out to men.

Tip #4 . . . Stay away from Debbie and Donnie Downers

Hanging with these types of people can absolutely sabotage your love life.

So let’s examine who these people are starting with Debbie Downers.

These are often your friends who sit around and complain about men, dating sites and how there is no one out there to date.

What this can do is create fear and anxiety in you.

And when you’re feeling fearful this creates self-doubt and makes it hard for you to be seen thus keeping you invisible.

When you’re worried you’ll attract scammers, or you think that no man will like you over 50 (they do!) or quality men don’t hang out on dating sites, then who do you attract?

Non-quality men, because that’s what your vibration is sending out to the Universe . . . “no one good is out there for me.”

People love to have their negative experiences validated and that’s what Debbie Downers do when they only focus on the negative aspects of dating.

Their stories keep them stuck because they are only looking at potential problems and can’t see the possibilities.

So how do you avoid them?

When you’re hanging with your friends and they go into a negative rant about dating, you can ask them to change the subject because you want to stay positive and upbeat about meeting men.

If they continue, you can sweetly say, “I’m heading to the lady’s room. Text me when you’re done talking about this.”

“Bitching” keeps you disempowered and invisible plus it keeps your dream at arm’s length.

Honoring yourself and your needs keeps you empowered and keeps you open to how you can make your dream come true.

Which do you want to come from in your life?

Let’s move on to Donnie Downers.

These are men who make broad statements like, I only date women in their 30’s thinking their way of dating is how all men date.

It’s not a true statement for all men.

But reading or hearing this type of statement can make you feel invisible to men over 50 because you believe this is how all men think.

I want you to know that there are lots of high-quality men who date women close to their age.

I had a client who met an amazing man 10 years younger than she is and they got married.

I’ve had clients date men close to their age or 3-5 years younger or older and they now live apart or together in amazing long-term committed relationships.

It’s true that men often try dating younger women but find they have nothing in common.

If you ask women in their 30’s if they want to date a guy in his 50’s or 60’s, they’ll scrunch their nose and say, “that’s like dating my grandpa.”

Young women who date older men usually do it for one of 2 reasons.

#1, they have “daddy issues” meaning their father either passed away when they were young or was absent from their lives growing up and they work this out with an older man in a relationship.

Or #2, they want a more affluent lifestyle than a man their age can provide.

Best thing you can do when you read something like. . .  men only date younger women is to tell yourself this is only one man’s belief and because he believes this is true he’s NOT a good match for me.

Tip #5 . . . Opening your heart to love

So many women I’ve spoken with have shared they got so hurt in their last relationship that they just don’t know if they can do it again.

They are so afraid of feeling that kind of pain again and aren’t sure they want to risk it happening once more at this time in their life.

So they start to hide and protect their hearts by not meeting new men which makes them feel invisible.

If your heart is hiding from love, consider working with a therapist or a coach on how to open up again to your dream of connection with a good man.

It’s worth doing the work because when your heart is open you shine and that’s when good men will see you!

    Believing in you!

    Believing in You!

  • What time does EA Sports College Football 25 release?

What time does EA Sports College Football 25 release?

    [ad_1]

College football is back in video games for the first time in nearly a decade with the upcoming release of EA Sports College Football 25. And while the game will arrive in a week, the specific release time is a little complicated, and there’s even a sneaky way that superfans can get on the gridiron a few days early.

Here’s when College Football 25 releases in your time zone, and how you can play it a few days early.

EA Sports College Football 25 release time: When does College Football 25 release?

EA Sports College Football 25 officially comes out on Friday, July 19, on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. EA hasn’t made it clear what time exactly the game will be available, but this post will be updated when that information is announced.

How to play EA Sports College Football 25 early

If you pre-order the Deluxe Edition of the game, you can start your march toward the National Championship a little bit earlier. If you pre-order this version before July 18, you will be able to play the game starting on Monday, July 15, at 4 p.m. ET. Here’s when that is in your time zone:

    • 1 p.m PDT on July 15 for the west coast of North America
    • 4 p.m. EDT on July 15 for the east coast of North America
    • 9 p.m. BST on July 15 for the U.K.
    • 10 p.m. CEST on July 15 for western Europe / Paris
    • 5 a.m. JST on July 16 for Tokyo

The Deluxe Edition also contains several Ultimate Team goodies, like an Alma Mater Ultimate Team Pack, a Cover Athlete Ultimate Team Pack, and a Bring Glory Home Ultimate Team Uniform, as well as 4,600 College Football Points, the game’s Ultimate Team currency. The Deluxe Edition of the game costs $99.99 on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

What to expect from EA Sports College Football 25

College Football 25 marks the virtual return of licensed collegiate football for the first time in a decade, and it looks like plenty has changed in that time. But just because this series has been on a break for 10 years doesn’t mean that College Football 25 is simply going to be a Madden clone. In fact, in the 20-minute gameplay video EA Sports released earlier this week, we can see plenty of unique features, like a highly upgraded option game, new animations, and a unique presentation for some of the most exciting stadiums and environments in college sports, like Penn State’s White Out games.

Along with those unique elements, the game will also feature upgraded versions of EA Sports’ classic game modes like Ultimate Team, Dynasty, and Road to Glory, which will let you take your own customized player and play out their collegiate career, from the earliest days all the way to the Heisman Trophy.

  • Need a background check in California? Changes at the courts are causing long waits

Need a background check in California? Changes at the courts are causing long waits

    [ad_1]

Significant delays in the processing of background checks are causing headaches across California, leaving applications for jobs and housing stuck in limbo while making it harder for employers and landlords to screen for criminal records.

The situation stems from a state appellate court ruling more than three years ago, which industry experts say has blocked background screeners and any court researcher from using date of birth or driver’s license information to narrow down search results as they investigate an individual’s criminal history.

The 2021 decision in All of Us or None of Us vs. Hamrick arose from a case brought by criminal justice reform advocates who have long argued that background checks lead to discrimination against formerly incarcerated people.

A panel at the 4th District Court of Appeals determined that Riverside County’s Superior Court website, which allowed users to input dates of birth and driver’s license numbers while searching for criminal records, was in violation of a state court rule that says such information should be excluded from court “indexes” accessible to the public through “electronic means.”

“After considering the text, history, and purpose” of the rule, the judges found that state courts should limit search criteria for the public, effectively eliminating the use of birth dates and license numbers.

Those personal identifiers had long been used to match individuals to their records, and without them it has proved nearly impossible to conduct searches that involve common names, industry experts say.

“This was an interpretation that no one had ever seen before or seen coming,” said Melissa Sorenson, executive director of the Professional Background Screening Assn. “Each of the courts is trying to figure out how to comply.”

Delays are particularly bad in Los Angeles County, where background check firms receive about 100,000 screening requests each month.

“Right now, L.A. County is an example of something that’s not sustainable,” Sorenson said.

Residents with common names or those with a long history in the area may have to wait for months or even years for their background check to be completed, Sorensen said, if it’s possible for it to be completed at all.

It has taken time for courts to adjust since the 2021 appellate ruling was handed down. The Superior Court of Los Angeles announced its changes in February.

“All the background screener can do is plug in Jose Rodriguez, for example, and because it’s a relatively common name in L.A., you could get back hundreds to thousands of results,” Sorenson said. “We have no way to filter based on any other identifier.”

Dates of birth are contained within physical court files, the Superior Court of Los Angeles said.

“These restrictions require background checkers seeking information on commonly named individuals to visit the courthouse where the physical court file is located to determine if the information they obtained in an electronic criminal record search applies to the person about whom they are inquiring,” the court said in an email.

The court limits the number of case files it will retrieve for a requester to five per day at any courthouse. For names with thousands of results, it’s not practical to check each physical file.

At the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, the county’s busiest criminal clerk’s office, additional court service assistants have been assigned to assist with file viewing requests. The current wait time to pull multiple files at a time is three to five days, the court said.

In a message reviewed by The Times, the background screening firm Sterling sent out a notice to clients explaining the situation earlier this year.

“With this change, the L.A. County court has made it significantly more challenging to accurately identify individuals during background checks,” the firm said. “Delays for criminal checks in L.A. County are expected to increase. … Some searches were closed as unperformable.”

Sterling did not respond to a request for comment. On the online forum Reddit, Los Angeles residents shared concerns that their background checks were not getting completed in time.

“Sterling is not able to get it done!” one user wrote. “Seriously anxious and have been unemployed for a month now,” said another.

In 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed Senate Bill 1262, which would have allowed court researchers to use date of birth to search for an individual without making the date publicly available.

“This bill would override a 2021 appellate court decision and current court rules that strike a fair balance between public access to court records, public safety, and an individual’s constitutional right to privacy,” Newsom wrote after shutting down the bill.

The nonprofit Legal Services for Prisoners with Children pushed for the veto, arguing the bill “was sponsored by commercial background check companies … with no regard for the interests of formerly incarcerated or convicted people.”

Eric Sapp, a staff attorney at the Oakland-based organization, pointed out that when background checks are authorized and required by law, local authorities are obligated to provide the relevant information and assure compliance.

“There’s no need for a background check company to intervene in those circumstances,” he said.

“We definitely believe that background checks are overused and are often useless for the purposes for which they’re used,” he said. “The criminal background check as it currently exists today might not be a viable model in the near future.”

Joshua Kim, lead attorney for the plaintiffs in the Hamrick case, said he wasn’t aware of holdups with housing and job applications — but said any such issues would be the fault of the background check industry, not the courts complying with the law.

“If there is in fact a delay that affects people’s opportunity for housing and employment because of the background check company’s inability to do their job, then that could potentially create another legal liability for them,” he said.

Thirty-seven states have adopted what is known as a “ban the box” policy that prohibits investigation into a job candidate’s conviction history before making an offer of employment, but many employers still seek to vet candidates, especially for jobs that require working with vulnerable populations or involve access to sensitive data.

“The fundamental question that we’ve been asking in the reentry law community is whether background checks are effective in screening out dangerous employees,” Kim said.

But some Angelenos have been frustrated by the current state of affairs.

South Pasadena mother Erin Chang had been stuck waiting months for her disabled son’s summer camp aide to get approved for work. The background check had to clear in order for the state to cover the cost of the aide, Chang said.

Although the check cleared just before camp began, Chang had to pay out of pocket for the aide and said she will seek reimbursement.

“Camp is over next week, and we’re still not sorted out,” Chang said. “They offered the explanation that she had a common name and that there is a backlog.”

Outside Los Angeles, other counties are making similar changes to comply with the court rules. San Luis Obispo County announced last month that it is redacting access to date of birth and driver’s license information in court search engines, and Orange County is rumored to be making the same move soon, said Sorenson of the background check trade group.

“It is more than just an L.A. County issue,” she said. “If an employer has a candidate with California history, they may have to move on to a different candidate.”

  • Dune: Awakening story teased in new cinematic trailer

Dune: Awakening story teased in new cinematic trailer

    [ad_1]

It’s been about a year and a half since we first caught wind of Dune: Awakening, the massively multiplayer online survival game set on the planet of Arrakis. On Friday, Funcom released a story-focused trailer at Summer Game Fest, teasing that the game will focus on an alternate telling of the story of Paul Atreides — but we’ll have to wait until Gamescom in Aug. 2024 for a gameplay trailer.

The game drops players first-person into the world of Dune (well, at least, the world of Arrakis) where they’ll traverse the desert, using the land and relying on its other inhabitants to survive and thrive. Players will be able to join house Atreides or the Harkonnen, or live a quieter existence as a crafter or trader — but they won’t be able to kill or ride sandworms, unfortunately.

The game harnesses the simultaneously desolate and claustrophobic setting of the desert to push players to their survival game limits: You’ll have to avoid the sun, evade sandworms, craft tools, and find water wherever it exists (and yes, that includes enemies’ bodies). But it’s not all treacherous walks through Arrakis — vehicles include thopters, thumpers, and sand bikes, and the Voice is at your disposal should you need to sway your enemies one way or another.

While past Dune games have (very successfully, mind you) leaned on real-time strategy to encapsulate the vibe of the books and films, Dune: Awakening promises the most immersive experience yet. We’ll have to see if it delivers on that promise when it’s released on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

  • ‘The Bear’ Sets a Season 3 Release Date

‘The Bear’ Sets a Season 3 Release Date

    [ad_1]

How did Carmy escape the walk-in? That question and more will be answered on Thursday, June 27, when the third season of The Bear debuts, according to a new teaser trailer out now. All episodes, as in past seasons, will drop at once on Hulu.

The show has become a pop-culture phenomenon with Chicago-area native Chris Storer giving viewers a peek into the restaurant world with his hometown as a backdrop. Season 1 helped showcase Chicago’s Italian beef sandwich for a nationwide audience.

FX announced the premiere date with a teaser showing Jeremy Allen White back in the kitchen — with a bright red LED clock reading 3:10. The camera zooms out of the restaurant — the former Mr. Beef on Orleans — flying south, and then east over River North toward DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The footage is accompanied by “The Dream Is Always the Same,” a song from the 1983 Tom Cruise movie Risky Business, filmed in Chicago.

Disney, which now offers Hulu through Disney+, previously pulled a trailer that circulated on social media in early April. Seasons 3 and 4 were allegedly filmed back to back, which probably gives stars like White, Ayo Edbiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach time for other projects. Their Hollywood stock has soared with the onslaught of awards since Season 1 debuted in June 2021.

Season 2’s build-up and climax saw the Original Beef of Chicagoland — loosely based on Mr. Beef, a venerable beef stand in River North — give way to a new restaurant called The Bear. The Bear seems to wed fine dining and neighborhood elements. With tons of Chicago restaurant cameos, Season 2 won over most Chicagoans, with a few exceptions.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic gets cozy with a new farming homestead

Star Wars: The Old Republic gets cozy with a new farming homestead

    [ad_1]

A new developer stream for Star Wars: The Old Republic showed a surprising feature on the way in Game Update 7.5. Players will be able to earn their own farmstead on the planet of Dantooine after completing a quest chain. The cozy feature will come with a Spring Abundance festival, which includes the surprisingly comfortable activities of “seed collecting, dancing, pie-baking, animal rehabilitation, and a galactic egg hunt,” according to a press release.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has been live for 13 years, and there’s a huge archive of content for players to enjoy. Ten months ago, the MMORPG changed hands from its original developer BioWare to Broadsword, the studio behind Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. While The Old Republic has faded from the spotlight, it’s still a very enjoyable game that’s worth revisiting to scratch a Star Wars itch.

Broadsword is taking the game in an intriguing direction. Patch 7.4.1 included Date Night companion missions, which are exactly what you’d expect from the name. These missions become available if the companion has been romanced, and is available in a player’s story — some circumstances can cause your partner of choice to leave the party. Date Night missions will be released in batches, and they grant a unique title and decoration.

Update 7.5 also includes a new main story chapter where players wrangle with a Hutt, and new single-player Ventures that are meant to provide a challenging experience. Players train up their very own Basilisk Prototype B3-S1 (or Bessie) and prepare them for combat. Eventually, Bessie joins your team as a permanent companion. The release date for Update 7.5 will be announced soon.

The Photos Arrive As Meagan Good’s Boo Jonathan Majors Faces More Legal Trouble

According to Variety, Meagan Good’s boyfriend, Jonathan Majors, was hit with a defamation lawsuit on Tuesday, March 19. Additionally, the lawsuit was reportedly filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

The outlet adds that Jabbari is accusing Majors of assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Furthermore, Jabbari is also reportedly accusing Majors of “malicious prosecution.”

The outlet adds that Jabbari’s suit stems from Majors repeatedly denying assaulting her during his previous criminal trial and interview with ‘Good Morning America.’ As The Shade Room previously reported, during the interview, Majors maintained that he did not assault Jabbari in March 2023, despite being convicted of assault and harassment against her by a jury in December 2023.

According to Variety, Majors is scheduled to face sentencing for the criminal conviction next month.

As The Shade Room previously reported, Meagan Good most recently gushed about her romance with Majors while they appeared at the NAACP Image Awards this past weekend.

The actor declared that she’s happily in love with Majors. Additionally, she shared how she coped throughout his criminal trial.

“I’m in love, I’m transitioning, I’m healing, I’m growing [and] I’m getting excited about what’s next… I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time,” she said. “I keep my eyes on God… And I stay true to myself, and I stay authentic.
