  • Burbank Girls Tennis Makes It Twice as Nice

    The Burbank High girls’ tennis made it two in a row over Long Beach schools Friday afternoon when the Bulldogs hosted Millikan High in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

    Burbank defeated the Moore League wild card entry by an 11-7 score, just 48 hours after Burbank defeated Long Beach Wilson.

    “We’re very excited to see what is ahead and we’re very happy that our hard work paid off,” Ilona Ghazaryan said “I’m glad we are able to get to the quarterfinals.”

    This is the Bulldogs’ second playoff quarterfinal appearance under veteran coach Loi Phan.

    Burbank (14-4) will travel to Santa Clarita to face Golden Valley on Monday in that quarterfinal match.

    Ironically, a victory over Golden Valley might possibly produce yet another Santa Clarita Valley opponent as Valencia High is a possible foe in the semifinal round.

    Burbank No. 1 singles player Daphne Harbaugh swept her sets, going 6-2 over Millikan No. 1 Camilla Speir, 6-0 over No. 2 player Charlotte Schivley and 6-0 over No. 3 player Londyn Tyler.

    Burbank No. 2 singles player Elin Sepanian won two of the three sets.

    The Bulldog freshman defeated Speir 6-2 and Shivley, 6-1. She lost 6-3 to Tyler.

    Burbank No. 3 player Veronika Gevorgyan won two sets as well.

    She defeated Millikan substitute Charlotte Fields 7-5 and Schivley 6-2. She lost 6-3 to Tyler.

    In doubles, the Burbank No. 1 team of Ilona Ghazaryan and Jordan Prilutsky won one of three sets.

    They lost 6-2 to the Millikan No. 1 team of Caitlin Ujiie and Leia Gray. They defeated the Millikan No. 2 team of Lily Seja and Camila Fratovich, 7-5. They lost 7-6(7-5) to the Millikan No. 3 doubles team of Payton Wallace Came and Gabriela Olivia Herrera.

    Burbank’s No. 2 doubles team of Tamara Khachatryan and Ariana Khougaeva won one of three sets.

    They lost by 6-3 scores to the teams of Ujiie and Gray as well Seja and Fratovich. They did defeated Wallce Came and Herrera, 6-3. 

    Burbank’s No. 3 doubles team of Elaine Ayrikian and Nare Tsaturyan won two of three sets.

    They lost 6-3 to the of Ujiie and Gray, but defeated Seja and Fratovich, 6-4. They won 6-0 over Wallace Came and Herrera.

    Millikan finishes its season at 11-10.

  • Burbank Girls Tennis Wins Playoff Opener

    One never knows who they will draw in the CIF Southern Section playoffs under the current formula, which is decided by an algorithm. Hundreds of schools from around the section could be the opponent.

    The Burbank High girls’ tennis team drew a big fish in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs in Long Beach Wilson, a school with a strong tradition in athletics and with an enrollment of more than 3,400 students.

    The host Bulldogs didn’t miss a beat Wednesday afternoon, defeating the visiting Bruins 13-5.

    Ironically, Burbank will face Wilson’s rival, Millikan High, in the second round of the playoffs on Friday at a site to be determined.

    Wilson (6-5) finished third in the Moore League. Millikan made the playoffs as a wild card.

    Burbank (12-4), which finished third in the Pacific League, got sweeps from its top two singles players.

    Daphne Harbaugh won 6-0 over Wilson’s Penelope Hall, 6-4 over Wilson No. 2 player Camila Lapeyre and 6-0 over Penelope Tellez. 

    Burbank No. 2 player Elin Sepanian also earned a sweep as she defeated Hall 6-0, Lapeyre and Tellez, both by 7-5 scores.

    Burbank No. 3 player Veronika Gevorgyan was swept in her sets, going 4-6, 0-6, 2-6.

    In doubles, the Burbank No. 1 team of Ilona Ghazaryan and Jordan Prilutsky won two of three sets.

    They went 6-2 over the Wilson No. 1 team of Sarah Weingartner and Haley Kaiser. They defeated the No. 2 team of Ashlyn Olmschneid and Lucy Cain, 6-1. They lost 6-1 to the Wilson No. 3 team of Zoe Loos and Abby Waitzman.

    The Burbank No. 2 team of Tamara Khachatryan and Ariana Khougaeva also won two sets. 

    They fell 6-2 to Weingartner and Kaiser, but defeated Olmschneid and Cain 6-2 and Loos and Waitzman, 6-4.

    Burbank’s No. 3 team of Elaine Ayrikian and Nare Tsaturyan earned a sweep, going 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

  • Burbank Girls Tennis Wins Again Over Burroughs

    The venue may have changed, but the result did not Thursday when the Burbank High girls’ tennis team visited Burroughs in the regular season finale.

    Similar to the first meeting between the two teams, Burbank came away as 13-5 victors.

    “It is always fun to play against Burroughs because it is friendly fire.  We like playing them because there is a lot of competition in the air,” Burbank No. 1 singles player Daphne Harbaugh said.

    Harbaugh swept her three sets. She won 6-1 over Burroughs No. 1 Mia Chapman. She won 6-0 over No. 2 player Leslie Fermenias and 6-0 over No. 3 player Bailey Robertson.

    Burbank No. 2 player Elin Sepanian also earned a sweep, after winning just one set in the first match between the teams.

    She also won by 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 scores.

    Burroughs won three sets over Burbank No. 3 player Ani Oganesian. 

    Chapman won 6-3. Fermenias won 6-0 and Robertson won 7-5.

    Burbank won seven of nine sets in doubles.

    The Burbank No. 1 team of Ilona Ghazaryan and Jordan Prilutsky lost 6-4 to the Burroughs No. 1 team of Saya Davidson and Ashley Sinovoi.  They lost 6-4 to the Burroughs No. 2 team of Dana Pitsker and Soso Bianchi. Prilutsky played with substitute Lilian Hamilton against the Burroughs No. 3 team of Lily Butler and Zoey Gould. The Burbank team won 6-4.

    The Burbank No. 2 team of Tamara Khachatryan and Ariana Khougaeva won 7-6(7-4) over Pitsker and Bianchi and 6-2 over Butler and Gould. Karina Gabrielyan and Khachatryan defeated the Burroughs team of Davidson and Sinovoi 6-3. 

    Burbank’s No. 3 doubles team of Elaine Ayrikiyan and Nare Tsaturyan won 7-5 over Davidson and Sinovoi. They won 6-0 over Pitsker and Bianchi and 6-3 over Butler and Gould.

    The Bulldogs finish the season as the third-place team from the Pacific League. Burroughs finishes in fourth place in league. 

    Both are expected to be selected when the CIF Southern Section releases its playoff pairings on Nov. 1.

    “We’re really excited. We’re glad our hard work paid off,” Harbaugh said.

  • Burbank Girls Tennis Wins First Battle With Burroughs

    It wasn’t a complete sweep, but it was very close Tuesday afternoon for Burbank High junior Daphne Harbaugh as she faced crosstown rival Burroughs.

    She lost just one game as the host Bulldogs earned a 13-5 Pacific League victory.

    “Playing Burroughs is fun because I pretty much know everyone on their team. It is one of our funnest matches to play,” Harbaugh said. 

    The match was a battle for third place in the league standings as both had lost previously to just Arcadia and Crescenta Valley.

    Harbaugh won 6-1 over Burroughs No. 1 player, senior Leslie Fermenias. She won 6-0 over Bailey Robertson and 6-0 over Dana Pitsker.

    Burbank No. 2 singles player, freshman Elin Sepanian won two sets. She defeated Robertson 6-3 and 6-1 over Burroughs freshman Mia Chapman.

    Burbank No. 3 singles player, freshman Veronika Gevorgyan was victorious in one of her three sets.

    She defeated Robertson 6-3, but lost 6-2 to Fermenias and 6-1 to Pitsker.

    In doubles, Burbank’s No. 1 team of Jordana Prilutsky and Ilona Ghazaryan earned a sweep.

    They won 6-4 over the Burroughs No. 1 team of Saya Davidson and Ashley Sinovoi.  The defeated the Burroughs No. 2 team of Lily Butler and Zoey Gould 6-4 and won 7-6(7-2) over the Burroughs No. 3 team of Lucy Ashby and Eleanor Lam.

    Burbank’s No. 2 team of Karina Gabrielyan and Tamara Khachatryan lost 6-4 to Davidson and Sinovoi. The defeated Butler and Gould 6-4 and lost 6-4 to Ashby and Lam.

    Burbank’s No. 3 team of Elaine Ayrikiyan and Nare Tsaturyan swept by going 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

    The two teams will face each other again on Oct. 23 at Burroughs.
