  • Prince George’s County Council appoints new member – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

The Prince George’s County Council is back to 11 members again, after appointing Danielle Hunter to fill the vacancy created by Wala Blegay’s move from the 6th District seat to an at-large seat.

The Prince George’s County Council is back to 11 members again, after appointing Danielle Hunter to fill the vacancy created by Wala Blegay’s move from the 6th District seat to an at-large seat.

Blegay was elected to the 6th District in 2022, but was appointed by her colleagues to the at-large seat vacated by Calvin Hawkins last month.

District 6 Prince George’s County Council member Danielle Hunter.

Hunter was chosen among nearly two dozen applicants for the seat, which encompasses much of the central part of the county. She has also been serving as the director of appointments for County Executive Aisha Braveboy, helping her to fill roles on the county executive’s team.

Braveboy threw her support behind Hunter at the beginning of a virtual meeting Friday afternoon.

“You need someone who will be active in the community,” Braveboy said. “She’s been active in the community. She’s been active with our seniors, with our young people. In fact, just this past winter, she bought coats for elementary school kids in the District Heights area. So this is someone who commits her money, her time, her resources, her heart, her love to her community.”

Those who applied for the position were given two minutes to address the council, though not everyone who applied attended the meeting.

“I am ready to get to work on behalf of the residents of District 6,” Hunter told the rest of the council when it was her turn to speak. “I’m excited about the future of Prince George’s County, and I look forward for the opportunities to work with you as we continue to elevate Prince George’s County.”

Council Chair Krystal Oriadha said after the council convened offline to discuss the candidates that there’s an obvious passion to serve the county.

“All of us that serve in this position know that it is hard work to decide to serve in this capacity, it does not come easy. So we just appreciate everyone being willing to take up the mantle in this way,” she said.

The full list of applicants can be found online.

  • Texans DE Danielle Hunter Wins AFC Defensive Player of the Week – Houston Press

    [ad_1]

Sitting at 4-5 on the season, the Houston Texans are firmly in the muck, the swamp of teams that, within a couple of weeks, could either have their season essentially ended or ascend firmly back into the playoff hunt, depending on results. They are an average team, with a few really good parts.

If we were to power rank the various components of this Texans team, in descending order, the top of the list begins with the edge rushing due of Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter. They, along with the entire defense, keep the Texans in any game.

Anderson has been a consistent force all season long, with seven sacks, and ranking fifth on the odds board for Defensive Player of the Year. Hunter has been solid, but had hit a bit of a lull. That is, a bit of a lull, until this past Sunday, in the 36-29 comeback win over the Jaguars.

Hunter was a cyborg menace all day long, with a career high 3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, and one forced fumble, and for his efforts, Hunter was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the first time a Texan has won that honor since Week 15 last season, when Stingley won it on the strength of his two interception game against the Miami Dolphins.

Hunter, a native Houstonian, was the recipient of a one year, $35.6 million contract extension this past offseason, keeping him a Texan through the 2026 season, so it was very encouraging to see him dominate the Jaguars and carry the team on his back, at times. Hunter joined Myles Garrett and Tuli Tuipulotu as the only players in the NFL this season to record at least three sacks and one forced fumble in a game. Sunday was the sixth time in Hunter’s career that he’s notched at least three sacks, which is tied for the most such games in the NFL since he entered the NFL in 2015.

This is Hunter’s first Defensive Player of the Week award as a Houston Texan, and he becomes the 14th Texans defensive player to win the award, a list that includes his head coach DeMeco Ryans, and teammates Anderson and Stingley. J.J. Watt holds the team record for most Player of the Week honors with a total of seven.

  • Five Best Houston Texans at Quarter Season Mark, According to PFF – Houston Press

    [ad_1]

It was a rocky first quarter of the season for the Houston Texans, with an 0-3 start that gave us way too many opportunities to reminisce about the 2018 Houston Texans, and their 0-3 start that turned into a playoff berth, the only teams to accomplish that off an 0-3 start this century.

Indeed, that’s way too much Bill O’Brien in my life. Thankfully, the Texans were able to close out the quarter-season mark (well, four games out of seventeen, so close to quarter) with a win versus the Titans. That’s made the week more pleasant. We’ll see if they can take advantage of a wounded Ravens squad on Sunday.

For now, let’s recognize the big performers four games in, and we will use the very helpful, but sometimes controversial, Pro Football Focus player grades to do so. These are subjective grades from human scorekeepers who watch every player on every play. The five best Houston Texans may not match YOUR eye test, but the PFF scores certainly make for lively debate.

Without further ado, here are the five best Texans, according to their relative player score at their position on PFF:

    5. SHELDON RANKINS, Defensive tackle (#16 out of 120 interior defensive linemen)

Rankins was a stalwart on the 2023 defensive line, and then left for Cincinnati in free agency for the 2024 season. Last season was a nightmare for Rankins, who suffered through multiple illnesses. Since returning to the Texans this season, Rankins has shown up big through four games, with a sack and 11 pressures.

    4. WILL ANDERSON, Defensive end (#11 out of 116 defensive ends)

Anderson and Hunter are the best defensive end duo in the league, and it’s not particularly close, with both ranking in the top 11 at the position. Anderson has himself near the top of the odds board for Defensive Player of the Year, with three sacks and a league-leading 25 QB pressures. Meanwhile….

    3. DANIELLE HUNTER, Defensive end (#8 out of 116 defensive ends)

Hunter is right there with Anderson statistically, and slightly above him in the PFF grade category. Hunter just came off of his biggest game of the year, with two sacks against the Tennessee Titans. On the season, Hunter has four sacks and 18 QB pressures, good for 10th in the league.

    2. TIM SETTLE, Defensive tackle (#8 out of 120 interior defensive linemen)

Like Rankins, Settle is a leader in the defensive linemen room, and his impact doesn’t show up in the way of huge numbers. Instead, Settle takes up blockers, and allows the linebackers to make plays. Settle himself, though, had two big pass breakups in the Jaguars game, including one on a fourth quarter fourth down to keep the Texans’ hopes alive.

    1. ED INGRAM, Guard (#1 out of 77 guards)

Ingram is in his fourth season in the NFL, and his highest grade for a whole season on PFF was in 2023, when he had a mediocre 59.6 total grade. This season, Ingram’s pass blocking has been just so-so, but he’s been a tank in the running game, with a run blocking grade of over 90. This has been one of NIck Caserio’s best acquisitions this year.

  • Six Houston Texans Land in NFL Top 100 Players

    [ad_1]

For the Houston Texans, the 2025 NFL season will begin on Sunday, September 7 in Los Angeles against the Rams. Around the league, most experts are fairly certain of a few things regarding the Texans — they should be clear favorites to win the AFC South, the offensive line can’t be worse than it was in 2024, and DeMeco Ryans is one of the bright, young coaching stars.

Where the Texans fit into the fabric of Super Bowl contenders, though, is very much up for debate. On most odds boards, they sit somewhere between 10th and 15th to win the whole shebang. However, if upper level, core talent on the roster is a deciding factor, the Texans should perhaps be higher up the list.

To wit, if we believe NFL players to be greater experts as to what constitutes “good at football” than non-players in the media, then the NFL’s Top 100 Players ranking, which is determined by votes of around 1,000 players, is great news for the Texans.

As it turns out, according to this year’s poll, the Texans have six of the top 58 players in football, with Derek Stingley, Jr. being the sixth and final Houston Texan revealed this week at number 18. If I’m correct on forecasting who the remaining players are on the countdown to be unveiled between now and next week, this means the Texans will end up with the second most players (6) in the top 58 spots, behind only the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles (7).

Let’s look at the six Texans in this ranking, and forecast whether they will each live up to their ranking this coming season:

    58. JOE MIXON, RB
I was mildly surprised that Mixon showed up in the Top 100 at all, let alone as high as 58th. It’s not that Mixon wasn’t a key cog for the Texans last season, but I just never watched him and thought “Wow, there’s only 57 guys on earth better than Joe Mixon.” As for the upcoming season, Mixon’s early season injury is going to make it awfully tough for him to replicate his 2024 numbers, both due to rust and the sheer math of missing games. I’d predict a fall out of the Top 100 for Mixon next year.

    46. WILL ANDERSON, Jr., EDGE
Anderson has made the Pro Bowl in both of his NFL seasons thus far, and if camp is any indication, Anderson is primed for a big leap this season. I think Anderson is a prime candidate for Defensive Player of the Year this season, and I think, if healthy, it’s a lock he ascends into the Top 25 players in football in next year’s rankings.

    39. C.J. STROUD, QB
Stroud entered the rankings last year at a practically unprecedented 20th coming off his historic rookie season. Statistically, as well know, Stroud backslid in 2024. However, the fact that he only dropped to 39th overall shows me that his peers see Bobby Slowik and the 2024 offensive line as the culprits in that regression. That said, I have no idea which direction Stroud’s ranking goes this coming season. If he descends, it means that the line was probably still an issue, but if returns to the Top 20, the Texans might have gone to the Super Bowl.

    32. NICO COLLINS, WR
Collins makes his flirrst appearance in these rankings at 32nd overall, and that’s having missed five full games and most of two others. Collins only played ten full games in 2024, and still finished with over 1,000 yards receiving. When he hurt himself in Week 5, he was on his way to the greatest receiving season in Texans history, which is saying something for a franchise who employed Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins. I think Collins ranking is attached at the hip to Stroud’s, and could go either way a year from now.

    25. DANIELLE HUNTER, EDGE
Hunter has been everything the Texans couple have asked for when they signed him in free agency before the 2024 season, having finished with a dozen sacks, and as you can see in the video above, numerous plays where the person he is tackling looks like they might not get up. Hunter has been fantastic. He is also getting older, but shows no signs of slowing down. I could see Hunter and Anderson flip flopping spots in next year’s ranking, with Hunter sliding into the 40’s and Anderson rising into the 20’s.

    18. DEREK STINGLEY, Jr.
Stingley’s living up to his status as third overall pick in the 2022 draft has been, aside from Stroud’s establishing himself as a franchise QB, the most important development for this roster, and thus, the Texans’ return to relevance (and hopefully, this season, return to prominence). If healthy, Stingley might be establishing a permanent home among the top 20 players in the sport. He is that good.

  • A Potential Haason Reddick Trade? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

A Potential Haason Reddick Trade? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

While the Super Bowl was the perfect way to kick off the week, Eagles fans received some frightening news on Sunday.

A panic was set in before the big game had even started. Would the Eagles really end up trading their star Defensive End?

Thankfully on Wednesday, some more information came out on this catastrophic situation.

Reddick himself confirmed that HE was not the one to ask for the trade request. Which asks the question, where did the trade request come from?

    Nothing New From Howie Roseman

There was more than enough reason to panic. Nothing like hearing your Defensive Player of the Year Finalist could be on a new team soon. But after the news was confirmed that Reddick wasn’t seeking the trade himself. Things began to make more sense, as this isn’t the first time the Eagles have gone about contract negotiations with a potential trade.

Just days before free agency of the 2023 season started. The Eagles and Darius Slay were in a similar situation. While the Eagles eventually cut Slay at the start of free agency. Only 1 day later, and Slay was back with Philly on a brand new 3 Year, $42 million deal.

Hopefully if this situation unfolds the same way. Reddick will find himself with a new contract, and a lengthy stay in Philadelphia.

On The Other Side Of The Coin

But what if the Eagles DID trade Haason Reddick? Currently, Reddick is the 21st highest paid edge rusher(per spotrac). Since joining the Eagles in 2022, let’s see how Reddick compares to some of the highest paid edge rushers.

    1. ($34M) Nick Bosa, 33 Games Played, 30 Sacks
    2. ($28M) T.J. Watt, 27 Games Played, 24.5 Sacks
    3. ($27M) Joey Bosa, 14 Games Played, 9 Sacks
    4. ($25M) Myles Garrett, 32 Games Played, 33 Sacks
    5. ($24.5M) Montez Sweat, 34 Games Played, 20.5 Sacks
    6. ($24M) Rashan Gary, 26 Games Played, 15 Sacks
    7. ($23.5M) Maxx Crosby, 34 Games Played, 27 Sacks
    8. ($23.5M) Khalil Mack, 34 Games Played, 25 Sacks

With 27.5 Sacks of his own, it’s clear enough that the contract Howie Roseman was able to get Reddick on was a highlight of the 2022 Off-season. Expecting to see an extension somewhere above the $25 Million average, the Eagles could be in an even longer off-season next year with Reddick, Sweat, Smith and Dickerson all due for large contracts.

The Last Huge Edge To Get Traded

It’s been almost 6 years since the Raiders traded Khalil Mack to the Bears. In his debut season with Chicago he put up 12.5 Sacks in only 14 games! The price to pay for a 27-year old Khalil Mack? Not only was it a 6-year, $141M contract. The Bears also received a 2020 2nd round pick (TE Cole Kmet) and a 2020 7th (OL Arlington Hambright) in the trade. However, Chicago sent 4 draft picks to the then Oakland Raiders which ended up becoming:

    • 2019 1st (RB Josh Jacobs)
    • 2019 6th (CB Blessuan Austin) – This pick was traded to the Jets, which resulted in a 2019 5th (WR Hunter Renfrow)
    • 2020 1st (CB Damon Arnette)
    • 2020 3rd (WR Bryan Edwards)

At the time of this trade, Mack was 27. However 4 years later, the Bears would get the following when they traded a 30-year old Mack to the Chargers:

    • 2022 2nd (S Jaquan Brisker)
    • 2023 6th (DL Scott Matlock) – This pick was traded back to the Chargers, which resulted in 2 2022 7th’s (S Elijah Hicks & P Trenton Gill)

With 1 season left on Reddick’s contract, the Eagles could end up with a 1st round pick and more. While losing the star edge rusher would leave 862 defensive snaps to fill, the Eagles could stock up on more draft picks and attempt to make a splash on upcoming free agents like Danielle Hunter, Chase Young or Marcus Davenport.

For the record, I’d love to keep Reddick as long as we can. However with him and Josh Sweat due in 2025, sometimes tough choices have to be made.

What would you do with this situation if you were in Howie Roseman’s shoes?

    Go Birds!
