    More than five years after a 14-year-old boy and his father were shot in Northeast D.C., which left the teen dead, three men have pleaded guilty in the shooting police say was a case of mistaken identity.

    More than five years after a 14-year-old boy and his father were shot in Northeast D.C., which left the teen dead, three men have pleaded guilty in the shooting police say was a case of mistaken identity.

    Jamal Matthews, Darnell Savoy and Stefon Freshley, all of D.C., pleaded guilty to the Dec. 28, 2018, shooting of the teen and his 34-year-old father in the District’s Clay Terrace neighborhood, according to a release.

    The victims were in their SUV waiting for a friend to arrive in the 200 block of 54th Street in Northeast when Matthews spotted the SUV, mistaking it for a vehicle that had shot at him and his cousin, who was killed, three days earlier — on Christmas Day.

    According to authorities, after seeing the victims’ SUV, Matthews called someone, who then called Freshley, who drove toward Matthew’s location to pick him up in Savoy’s vehicle.

    As the three men drove past the victims’ SUV, Matthews fired approximately 30 shots at it, hitting the teen nine times in the head, abdomen, chest and back. The teen’s father was shot in his leg and hand.

    Matthews, Savoy and Freshley will return to court for a sentencing hearing on June 23.

    After the expiration of round two of D.C.’s new drug-free zones on Monday, police in the District have now announced a list of new zones to go into effect Wednesday morning — one in each of the city’s seven police districts.

    After the expiration of round two of D.C.’s new drug-free zones on Monday, police in the District have now announced a list of new zones — one in each of the city’s seven police districts — to go into effect Wednesday morning.

    Bright orange signs indicating these drug-free zones were posted early Tuesday morning, 24 hours ahead of enforcement beginning, D.C. police officials said.

    Limited to five days in duration and 1,000 square feet in size, the new round of drug-free zones are set to expire at 7:59 a.m. on Monday, April 1.

    The boundaries of each drug-free zone have been established by D.C. police as the following:

    • First District: 700-800 block of I Street NE; 800 block of 9th Street NE; 800 block of H Street NE; 700 block of 8th Street NE; 700 block of G Street NE; 700-800 block of 7th Street NE.
    • Second District: 600-700 blocks of 11th Street NW; 600-700 blocks of 13th Street NW; 1100-1200 F Street NW; 1100-1200 H Street NW.
    • Third District: 2000 block of 13th Street NW; 2000 block of 14th Street NW; 1300 block of V Street NW; 1300 block of U Street NW.
    • Fourth District: 700 block of Kenyon Street NW; 3000-3100 blocks of Georgia Avenue NW; 700 block of Columbia Road NW; 3000-3100 blocks of Sherman Avenue NW.
    • Fifth District: 1500-1600 blocks of Neal Street NE; 1500 block of Maryland Avenue NE; 1200 Holbrook Street NE; 1400 block of Morse Street NE.
    • Sixth District: 4500 block of Benning Road SE; 4500 block of B Street SE; Unit block of 46th Street SE; 4500 block of East Capitol Street SE.
    • Seventh District: 3900 Block of South Capitol Street SW; 3900 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SW; Unit Block Atlantic Street SW.

    The drug-free zones were authorized by sweeping anti-crime legislation approved by the D.C. Council and signed into law earlier this month. Police called the measure a tool “to help communities reclaim their public spaces.”

    In designated drug-free zones, police can require people gathering in groups of two or more to leave the area, if they are believed to be involved in illegal drug activity. Anyone who refuses to leave after the first warning is subject to arrest — a change from previous protocol.

    Three arrests have been made since the designation of these zones.

    The drug-free zones are declared by the police chief and will be chosen based on the number of drug arrests, the number of calls for service, and the violent crime rate in that particular area.

    A man has been arrested after a missing woman was found dead by detectives in a trash collection truck near her residence, the Prince William County Police Department said Saturday. 

    A man has been arrested after a missing woman was found dead by detectives in a trash collection truck near her residence, the Prince William County Police Department said Saturday.

    Family members of 30-year-old Taty’ana Zakiyyah Cooks were concerned about her welfare after she had not shown up to pick up her child from daycare, police said.

    Officers arrived at Cooks’ residence in the 12200 block of Stevenson Court to investigate on Thursday night. During the investigation, detectives learned that Cooks’ personal belongings were still in her home, but her vehicle was being driven in Newport News City by an acquaintance of hers, 28-year-old Brendon Devon White.

    On Friday, detectives stopped and secured a trash collection truck where the victim’s body was found, police said. Additional evidence discovered indicated that White was involved in the victim’s death, according to police.

    White was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held pending a court date.

    State leaders and students in Maryland recently went device-free and connected with nature for the “Global Day of Unplugging.”

    In celebration of the “Global Day of Unplugging,” which began March 1, Maryland’s first lady Dawn Moore hiked with state officials and high schoolers, device-free, to encourage improved mental health.

    On Friday, Moore was joined by Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz, Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Laura Herrera Scott, mental health and environmental experts and several Howard County high school students, in Halethorpe’s Patapsco Valley State Park.

    “Improving the mental health of Maryland’s children is one of my top priorities as first lady,” Moore said in a news release.

    “I encourage parents to help their children take time to unplug from the digital world and explore the world around them, including Maryland’s natural beauty. I am proud to be working in partnership with our state agencies, community organizations, and our young students to help improve the mental health of all Maryland children.” 

    At the park, the group participated in a forest bathing hike followed by a group yoga session.

    “Improving mental health is also about having fun in nature,” Kurtz said, who added that he encourages all Marylanders to find time to enjoy all the types of different recreational activities made possible by the state parks and public lands.

    “We have to use every technique we can to improve children’s mental health,” Dr. Laura Herrera Scott said.

    “Immersing yourself in nature is one way children and their parents can connect with each other and the world around them. The mental health improvements from these types of activities can have long-lasting positive effects such as improved sleep, decreased levels of stress, increased opportunities for peer engagement, and development of leadership skills.”

    The Maryland Department of Natural Resources provides in-classroom opportunities for connecting with nature, professional development for teachers to teach about the state’s environment, as well as outdoor learning experiences in its parks, according to the news release.

    A family of five has been displaced from their home in Prince William County, Virginia, after a heavy fire originating in their garage quickly spread, according to the county’s fire and rescue services.

    A family of five has been displaced from their home in Prince William County, Virginia, after a heavy fire originating in their garage quickly spread, according to the county’s fire and rescue services.

    Just after 3 p.m. on Friday, the Prince William County Fire and Rescue said they responded to a reported house fire in the 2400 block of Port Potomac Avenue in Woodbridge.

    The occupants of the home — one adult and four children — were able to safely evacuate, firefighters said.

    However, the damage sustained by the home rendered it unsafe to occupy, according to county officials. The fire and rescue service said that the Red Cross is now helping the displaced family.

    A video of the fire was posted to Facebook by Prince William Professional Firefighters, who said the “bulk of the fire was knocked down within moments of arrival.”

    The Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was accidental, “originating in the engine compartment of a vehicle parked in the garage.”

    Two men were arrested Thursday after over 70 pounds of marijuana were found in their checked baggage at Dulles International Airport.

    Two men were arrested Thursday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found over 70 pounds of marijuana in their checked baggage at Dulles International Airport.

    According to a release from CBP, 33-year-old Kaliq Talib McCallister and 28-year-old Christian Tyler Knight, both of Las Vegas, Nevada, were arrested by Virginia State Police troopers at the airport and were charged with felony possession with intent to distribute, transportation and narcotics conspiracy.

    CBP officers at Dulles found “large vacuum-sealed bags full of suspected marijuana in three suitcases being loaded onto a Keflavik, Iceland, flight,” the release said.

    Both men were traveling through Iceland to Paris, France, where officers said high-quality weed can be sold for several times higher than in the U.S.

    “Marijuana remains illegal federally, and travelers who smuggle bulk amounts of marijuana gamble with their freedom to chase a few extra bucks,” said Marc E. Calixte, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C.

    “Customs and Border Protection officers are hard to bet against, and our officers will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure smugglers are held accountable.”

    CBP officers retrieved a total of 68 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana, weighing a combined 72 pounds and 15 ounces, which they said could have a street value of as much as $350,000 in the U.S. — and even more in Paris.

    CBP said that they capture 2,895 pounds of dangerous drugs on average everyday at air, land and sea ports of entry throughout the U.S.

    Nine Rolex watches were taken from a downtown D.C. jewelry store Friday afternoon and police are looking for the suspects.

    Just before 1 p.m. at Tiny Jewel Box located on 1155 Connecticut Avenue NW, police said a suspect smashed through the exterior window of the store with a sledgehammer.

    Two additional suspects then reached through the window and managed to take the Rolex watches — with a total value over $200,000 — before fleeing the area in a Honda Accord.

    The nine watches ranged in value from $8,300 all the way up to $42,500, according to a police report.

    Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects, who face charges of first-degree theft and destruction of property, the report said.
