A Manassas man faces charges including murder after he was arrested in Virginia Beach Friday, following a deadly hit-and-run in Dumfries, police said.

Prince William County police said Keith Anthony McBride, 41, of Manassas, was arrested by Virginia Beach City police for allegedly stealing a man’s car and fatally striking him with it before driving away on July 20.

Jose Vasquez Galvan, 37, of Dumfries, was standing outside his gold 1999 Lexus RX 300 SUV in the parking lot of the Oasis at Montclair apartment complex on July 20 when police said McBride got inside the vehicle, drove into Galvan then sped off.

Galvan died from his injuries at a hospital two days later. Police said there’s no known connection between McBride and Galvan.

McBride was charged with felony murder, felony hit & run and grand larceny auto, Prince William County police said

Police identify man killed in Fairfax County motorcycle crash – WTOP News

The motorcyclist who died at the scene has been identified as 23-year-old David Arias Sandoval of Herndon, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Detectives in Fairfax County, Virginia, have identified the man who was killed in a motorcycle crash in the Chantilly area on Thursday afternoon.

The motorcyclist who died at the scene was 23-year-old David Arias Sandoval, of Herndon, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a crash on Route 28 near McLearen Road in Chantilly involving a 2021 Kawasaki motorcycle, a Nissan Rogue and a Volkswagen Taos.

Detectives said they believe the motorcyclist attempted to pass the Nissan while “traveling at a high rate of speed on northbound Route 28.” The motorcyclist struck the Nissan, and the impact caused debris to hit the Volkswagen, according to police.

Police said the Nissan’s driver was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Detectives are continuing their investigation into whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Route 28 was closed northbound between Route 50 and McLearen Road, near Dulles International Airport, for about 4 hours and 30 minutes as police investigated the crash, causing backups as long as 5 miles.

Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland, say they are actively investigating a shooting that killed a man and wounded a child Saturday afternoon at a youth football game at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill.

At a press conference late Saturday afternoon, Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said the department has “promising leads” in the shooting that killed a man and wounded a child.

At approximately 11:20 a.m., officers responded to the school for a shooting and found a man in the bleachers suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said the man was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

Aziz said the suspect and the victim were watching the football game when a dispute happened.

Police said the second victim, a 5-year-old child, was also found with a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled after the shooting, police said.

“Prince George’s County is a safe place to live. We have our challenges and we have our issues, but this is where it comes into play that community and police work together to resolve these issues,” Aziz said. “We can’t do anything without the intelligence and information of our greater community who want to see an end to senseless violence.”

Aziz said the department wants to “bring some resolution to an affected family on Father’s Day weekend.”

A man has been hit with multiple theft charges after police say he stole over $3,800 of merchandise — mostly Red Bull energy drinks — from CVS stores in Northwest.

A man has been hit with multiple theft charges after police say he stole over $3,800 of merchandise — mostly Red Bull energy drinks — from CVS stores in Northwest D.C.

The Red Bull did not give him wings. Darryl Lamond Quander, 58, of no fixed address, was located and arrested by D.C. police Monday.

Quander has been charged with 19 counts of second-degree theft for a series of retail thefts from late February through late April of this year at three different CVS locations in Northwest: one at the 1400 block of P Street, another in the 1000 block of 16th Street and a third in the 1100 block of Vermont Avenue.

In addition to over $2,000 of Red Bull, Quander has also been charged for theft of Starbucks products, dog food, household goods, body wash, shampoo and other assorted merchandise.

National Asian Heritage Festival to shut down some DC streets Saturday – WTOP News
The 2024 National Asian Heritage Festival in D.C. will bring about parking restrictions and street closures in the city that drivers should take into consideration Saturday, D.C. police said.
To round out Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, D.C. will be hosting a massive festival celebrating everything the culture has to offer.

The annual National Asian Heritage Festival in D.C. has been celebrating the diversity of Asian heritage and culture since 2006. This year, the event will kickoff with a dance showcase on May 2 and a street fair on June 1. The street fair was postponed from its original scheduled date of May 18.

The festival will bring about parking restrictions and street closures in the city that drivers should take into consideration Saturday, D.C. police said.

The following streets will be posted as Emergency No Parking on Saturday from 1 a.m. to 10 p.m.:
- 4th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Madison Drive, NW
- 6th Street between C Street and Constitution Avenue NW
- Constitution Avenue between 6th Street and 3rd Street, NW
- Pennsylvania Avenue between 6th Street and 3rd Street, NW
The following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday from approximately 2 a.m. to 10 p.m.:
- 4th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Madison Drive, NW
- Constitution Avenue between 7th Street and 3rd Street, NW
- Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th Street and 3rd Street, NW
The following street may be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday if deemed necessary for public safety and traffic mitigation:
- 6th Street from C Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
D.C. police said all street closures and listed times are subject to change, and the public should expect parking restrictions along the street and follow posted emergency no parking signage, at the risk of ticketing and towing.

Stumpy, DC’s famous cherry blossom tree, dead at 25 – WTOP News

Stumpy, a well-known cherry blossom tree at D.C.’s Tidal Basin, has died at the estimated age of 25, the National Park Service said.

Stumpy, a crowd-favorite cherry blossom tree at D.C.’s Tidal Basin, has died at the estimated age of 25. It was the victim of failing seawalls requiring repair, according to a statement from the National Park Service.

Stumpy’s exact age had been unknown for years due to a lack of countable rings inside its hollowed trunk.

As hollow as his stump may have been, many people said Stumpy was a tiny cherry blossom tree with a whole lot of heart — and one with a whole lot of fans. Stumpy was slight yet iconic, capturing the hearts of D.C. residents and tourists who were all rooting for the little tree through its final moments.

Born and raised in the tough waters of the Tidal Basin, Stumpy was known amongst its arboreal peers as a sweetheart and even a class clown. It especially loved to take photos with visitors, never allowing its mounting health concerns to compromise its flowery smile.

During his last bloom, visitors came to the Tidal Basin to share hopes and well wishes for the little cherry tree that could, encouraging the National Parks Service to #SaveStumpy any way it could.

Stumpy first stepped into the spotlight circa 2020, when it went viral on Reddit for being compared to one user’s love life.

Leading up to its death, it entered what tree doctors called a “mortality spiral” — dealing with old age, it also had sun scalding on its bark, advancing fungi, and lived in depleted and compacted soils.

Stumpy died on May 24; it was one of approximately 150 trees removed between the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.

Stumpy is survived by thousands of family members and friends in the U.S. and internationally, with many relatives in Japan.

After Stumpy’s loss, the National Park Service said 274 more cherry trees will be replanted in the area.

Arborists also grabbed clippings from Stumpy in the hopes of expanding its lineage and keeping the tilted titan of the Tidal Basin around for years to come. Those little ones will hopefully be propagated and grow up to be just as impactful as their Prunus parent.

The popular outdoors summer concert series that goes down in the picturesque National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Its 2024 schedule and lineup are now posted, along with guidance on how to guarantee your entry into these groovy gatherings.

The concert series will run on Fridays from May 31 through Aug. 9, with no performance on July 5. All concerts begin at 6 p.m. on their scheduled dates, with garden gates opening an hour prior.

Grammy-nominated Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas kick off the concert series on May 31. Tickets for that performance are available via a lottery system as of Monday morning.

Registration for tickets takes place the week before each concert, opening on Monday at 10 a.m. and closing on Friday at noon. People will be notified of their selection status the Monday before each concert — and those who are selected can register for up to four passes.

What to know before you go

What if you miss out on grabbing a pass, but you’re still dying to go? The National Gallery of Art said that a few extra passes will be available at all entrance gates starting at 5 p.m. the night of each concert. That’s first-come, first-served, so showing up “fashionably late” may work against you in this case.

Hoping to bring your junior jazz enthusiast? That’s cool. Just remember that if your kid is at least 2 years old, registration is required.

Want to bring your own drinks? Don’t. While visitors are welcome to bring their own picnics, outside alcoholic beverages are not allowed. The Sculpture Garden will have you covered with both food and booze for purchase at the Pavilion Café and several pop-up bars.

Worried about weather cancellations? The National Gallery of Art said that starting this year, it will offer rain dates to registrants whose concerts are canceled due to weather. It will contact those registrants directly.

Entrances to the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, on the north side of the National Mall, are at 7th Street NW, 9th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, and 9th Street and Madison Drive NW.

Light sleepers living in the vicinity of Reagan National may be begrudgingly familiar with the sounds of airplanes taking off and landing. Now, DCA-adjacent residents can take part in a two-year airport noise mitigation study led by Prince George’s County, in partnership with Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria.

The study, which kicked off in May 2023, engages impacted neighborhoods and communities south of DCA through a community survey and public outreach meetings. Feedback collected from the study will be used to develop suggestions for mitigating airplane noise.

The community survey can be accessed online.

Prince George’s County says aircraft noise has become a significant concern for residents near DCA, a bustling transportation hub that set a passenger record last year.

“The noise from flights into and out of DCA significantly affects the quality of life for residents, especially those living along the Potomac River in Prince George’s County and surrounding jurisdictions,” the county said in a release.

Complaints can also be submitted on the DCA Reagan National website and viewed on the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s interactive Community Complaint Dashboard.

DC man sentenced in 2021 shooting that killed 1, struck another in Northeast – WTOP News

A D.C. man was sentenced Friday for a 2021 shooting that killed one man and struck another.

A D.C. man was sentenced Friday in the 2021 shooting of two unarmed people, which killed one of them, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

DeJuan Bell, 47, of D.C., was sentenced to 24 years in prison and five years of supervised release on the charge of second-degree murder while armed for the Dec. 10, 2021, shooting that killed one man and struck another, according to a release.

Bell pleaded guilty on March 1.

According to the government’s evidence, on the evening of the shooting in the second floor hallway of an apartment building on 4th Street in Northeast D.C., Bell intentionally fired a handgun at least seven times at two unarmed people, striking both and killing 34-year-old Davon Childs of Hyattsville, Maryland.

Bell was also sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years of supervised release for the charge of aggravated assault while armed, which will run concurrently with the first sentence, the release said.

Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland, are investigating what they call a domestic-related murder-suicide at the Beltsville home of an elderly married couple.

Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland, are investigating what they call a domestic-related murder-suicide at the Beltsville home of an elderly married couple.

Ji Tu, 78, and spouse Li Tu, 72, were found suffering gunshot wounds in their home in the 3600 block of Stonehall Drive when officers arrived Thursday around 6:25 p.m. for a welfare check, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Police said Ji Tu was the murder suspect and shot his spouse before killing himself.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation, police said.

Police: Driver hit sign, exited car before being struck, killed in Rockville – WTOP News

Detectives in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that killed a 43-year-old man on Wednesday.

Detectives in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that killed a 43-year-old man on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Earl William Smith, of Clinton, according to a Friday news release from police.

Just after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel and police officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck on the westbound side of Norbeck Road, between Georgia Avenue and Muncaster Mill Road.

Police said Smith had been driving when he collided with a sign, disabling his vehicle in the median. Smith then got out of his vehicle and was struck in the roadway by the driver of a black BMW. Police said the driver of the BMW remained at the scene.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact detectives at (240) 773-6620.

DC Water has lifted a boil water advisory that affected several Northwest D.C. neighborhoods after a large water main break Wednesday afternoon.

DC Water is instructing customers in the previously impacted area to run cold water taps for 10 minutes before using, if water was not used at all during the advisory. They are also instructing those customers to discard food, beverages or ice prepared with water that was not boiled during the advisory.

The advisory affected 4,800 customers in some neighborhoods in Upper Northwest D.C., including Upper Chevy Chase, Ft. Reno, American University, Spring Valley, Friendship Heights, Westover Place, Wakefield, North Cleveland Park, Palisades, Wesley Heights, Foxhall Crescent, Foxhall Village, Hawthorne, Barnaby Woods and Chevy Chase.

An interactive map from DC Water shows the areas that were affected.

The boil water advisory was issued as a conservative, precautionary measure to protect public health, DC Water said. The water main break caused a loss of water pressure, which could allow bacteria and other disease-causing contaminants to enter the system.

Bacteria and other disease-causing contamination such as viruses and parasites can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms, which could pose health risks to vulnerable groups, the utility said in a news release.

The boil water advisory was lifted after tests confirmed that drinking water meets all water quality safety standards.

Fencing has been installed around the George Washington University’s University Yard following the Wednesday clearing of the encampment occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters for nearly two weeks.

Police said that 11 of the 33 protesters arrested during the clearing identified themselves as GW students, while the university said in a statement only six were students.

The fence barriers, standing over 10 feet tall, resemble those put in place around the Capitol building after the January 6, 2021 insurrection — and are now blocking all entrances of University Yard.

It is unclear how long the fences are expected to remain around the area.

When asked at a Wednesday news conference whether the encampment clearing meant there would be no more protests on GW’s campus, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said it was university President Ellen Granberg’s decision “to determine if she will allow protests in other areas of the campus.”

Smith said that no protests will take place in the now-secured area.

The encampment, which had been in place for 13 days, was cleared early Wednesday morning by officers that deployed pepper spray and arrested 33 protesters who police said refused to vacate after six warnings.

Smith said there were many indicators that the protests were becoming more volatile, outlining intelligence that officers had been collecting over the days leading up to Wednesday. One of the concerning indicators Smith mentioned was that non-students were joining the protests on campus and had been found in secure campus buildings.

Granberg also said in a statement over the weekend that the protest had “been co-opted by individuals who are largely unaffiliated with our community and do not have our community’s best interest in mind.”

On Thursday, police Deputy Director of Communications Paris Lewbel confirmed to WTOP that “11 of the arrestees identified themselves as George Washington University students.”

Police arrest records show that the 33 arrested protesters ranged in age from 18 to 33 years old, with most of them college-age. The university said in a statement later Thursday that only six of those arrested were students.

Tensions have continued to ratchet up in standoffs with protesters on campuses across the U.S. — and increasingly, in Europe — nearly three weeks into a movement launched by a protest at Columbia University in New York.

Some colleges cracked down immediately on protests against the Israel-Hamas war. Among those that have tolerated the tent encampments, some universities have begun to lose patience and call in police over concerns about disruptions to campus life, safety and the involvement of nonstudents.

Since April 18, just over 2,600 people have been arrested on 50 campuses, according to figures based on reporting by The Associated Press and statements from universities and law enforcement agencies.

Fairfax man accused of shooting at fellow ride-share passenger – WTOP News

A Lorton, Virginia, man was arrested and charged Thursday after an incident in March that allegedly involved him shooting at a person he had just taken a ride-share with, Fairfax County police said.

A Lorton, Virginia, man was arrested and charged Thursday after an incident in March that allegedly involved him shooting at a person he had just taken a ride-share with, Fairfax County police said.

Just after midnight on March 1, police said they responded to the 9200 block of Ashland Woods Lane in Lorton for a shooting.

The victim was not struck by the gunfire, but had allegedly been shot at multiple times by 32-year-old Yusef Roy after an argument.

Roy and the victim — who were unknown to each other — had just taken a ride-share together. They were picked up from different locations and dropped off near each other, police said.

Roy fled the scene after the shooting, police said, but was identified, arrested and charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony after an investigation.

He’s being held without bond.

Police said detectives executed a search warrant on Roy’s home and found several firearms.

The 2024 National Women’s Half Marathon and 8K is slated for Sunday in D.C. and motorists should plan their routes since there will be several road closures.
The 2024 National Women’s Half Marathon and 8K is slated for Sunday in D.C. and motorists should plan their routes since there will be several road closures.

At approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, the following roads will be closed, according to the United States Park Police:
- Rock Creek Parkway
- Independence Avenue SW from 14th Street to 23rd Street
- West Potomac Park
- East Potomac Park (Access available to East Potomac Golf Course)
- Ohio Drive SW
Roads will reopen around noon Sunday.

Arlington Public Schools’ Extended Day employee accused of showing porn to children – WTOP News

An 18-year-old employee of Arlington County Public Schools’ Extended Day program has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, as well as assault and battery.

An 18-year-old employee of Arlington County Public Schools’ Extended Day program has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, as well as assault and battery, according to the county police department’s special victims unit.

A criminal investigation was initiated on April 19 for Matthew Pineda, of Fairfax County, Virginia, who was assigned to Abingdon Elementary School, after police received information he had shown pornography to three juveniles.

Pineda is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility, and the police department’s SVU said it is seeking possible additional victims.

Sterling warehouse fire ruled accidental by Loudoun Co. fire officials – WTOP News

The warehouse fire in Sterling, Virginia, that sent black smoke billowing into the sky and triggered a significant emergency response Monday afternoon has been deemed an accident, according to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire, which caused estimated damages of $2.25 million, was “improper discarding of smoking materials.”

Just after 3 p.m. on Monday, firefighters were called to a facility in the 100 block of Acacia Lane, according to the department. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after two-and-a-half hours. One responding firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene of the fire, but no one else was injured, according to the fire department and Virginia State Police.

“Upon arrival, fire and rescue personnel found a large warehouse facility with fire through the roof. Initial crews identified the primary building was a total loss and began working to contain the fire to the building of origin,” the department said in a news release. “The fire was extremely difficult to extinguish due to the burning of the stored materials and the size of the warehouse.”

Loudoun County fire officials have offered the following tips to help prevent these kinds of fires:
- Smoke outside.
- Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished, every time.
- Ensure smoking materials are discarded in appropriate containers and clean them often. Never use plastic, potted plants, mulch, grass, leaves, or anything that can burn to extinguish smoking materials.
- Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away.
- Use a deep, sturdy ashtray and be sure it is placed on a surface where it will not tip over.
- Place containers away from any structure, never on front porches, decks, or just outside the door.
- Ensure you have working smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

16-year-old charged in theft, assault at Navy Yard CVS; police seeking additional suspects – WTOP News

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in last Tuesday’s theft and assault at a CVS retail location in the Navy Yard area of Southeast, D.C. police announced Sunday.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in last Tuesday’s theft and assault at a CVS retail location in the Navy Yard area of Southeast, D.C. police announced Sunday.

The unnamed teenager was one of 20 suspects identified on surveillance footage that D.C. police sought the public’s help to find. He was charged with theft and assault on a police officer.

On Tuesday evening, around 8:45 p.m., the large group entered the store and took items without paying. When confronted by a security guard, someone in the group threw a bottle at the guard, according to a news release from police.

Police are still searching for the additional suspects, who are pictured below.

Man dead after Ride On bus collision in downtown Silver Spring – WTOP News

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal collision between a Ride On bus and a man in downtown Silver Spring early Saturday morning in Maryland.

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal collision between a Ride On bus and a man in downtown Silver Spring early Saturday morning in Maryland.

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, officers and fire rescue personnel responded to the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Colesville Road for a report of a collision involving a pedestrian, police said.

What caused the collision is still under investigation. Police confirmed that the Ride On bus left the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives want anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call (240) 773-6620.

Pedestrian killed in Montgomery Co. hit-and-run, police say – WTOP News

A Silver Spring, Maryland, man is dead after being hit by two vehicles — including one that did not stop — as he walked near an intersection in Montgomery County on Friday night, police said.

A Silver Spring, Maryland, man is dead after being hit by two vehicles — including one that did not stop — as he walked near an intersection in Montgomery County on Friday night, police said.

According to police, a Honda Odyssey mounted the curb “for unknown reasons” while traveling westbound on Randolph Road near the intersection of Kimblewick Drive shortly after 10 p.m., striking 52-year-old Ronaldo Franzese and causing him to “fall into the roadway.”

A white, four-door Acura then hit Franzese, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Acura “fled the scene without rendering aid” to Franzese, and was seen traveling north on New Hampshire Avenue and then west on Randolph Road, according to police.

“The Acura may be a white 2009-2012 Acura TL, which is missing a fender line and may have additional damage on the front end, near the ground,” police said in a release.
