  • First Look: Pin High Golf Sim Facility, Opening Friday in Bay Village – Cleveland Scene

Pin High (27229 Wolf Rd.), a new golf simulator facility in Bay Village, will open Friday, November 7, just in time for the indoor golf season in Northeast Ohio. The new entertainment complex comes from Dan Deagan, who partnered with his large group of golfing buddies to fill a gap in the community.

Over the past year and a half, the former Bay Lanes bowling alley was transformed into a bright, spacious facility with a dozen high-tech golf bays, a full bar and game room. Each bay has its own four-seat counter, TV for sports viewing, and a mini-fridge that comes pre-stocked with beverages that are ordered ahead of time online.

A more upscale space in the rear of the facility features four well-appointed bays and plenty of seating for larger groups.

All bays utilize Foresight Falcon systems that can access 50 of the best golf courses around the world. More courses will be added down the road. Golfers can hit the driving range, play 9- or 18-hole rounds, or analyze their swings. Bays are rented by the hour.

In addition to the golf bays, Pin High has a check-in desk, merchandise area, bag drop and kid-friendly game room that is located away from the bar and bays.

“Bay Village is a very family-oriented community,” Deagan explains. “While the parents are golfing, it gives the kids a place to run around and play.”

To eat, there will be pizzas delivered from Wolf & Co., Deagan’s wine bar located in the same plaza. In the coming weeks or months, a concession-style stand will offer hot dogs, sausages and brats.

While indoor golf is primarily a seasonal activity, golfers use the technology year-round to stay sharp or simply save time and money. By combining the golf with a spacious bar – a rarity in Bay Village in its own right – Deagan envisions plenty of business. Events like leagues, lessons from pros, and private parties will help fill the schedule.

“We also want to be a place where you can come to get a snack and some drinks and watch sporting events,” adds Deagan.

Pin High will be open all day seven days a week.

  • Now Open: Wine Dive in Lakewood, From the Owners of Lakewood Truck Park

Now Open: Wine Dive in Lakewood, From the Owners of Lakewood Truck Park

Wine Dive is now open in Lakewood.

Jackie Ramey and Dan Deagan, who run the nearby Lakewood Truck Park (among other spots), have spent the past three months converting the former El Carnicero space in Lakewood into Wine Dive (16918 Detroit Ave.), which opened this week.

The mission behind the place, says Ramey, is to “toe the line between dive bar and wine bar.”

“Dan and I love going to dive bars – and honestly the shittier the better,” she says. “But I like to drink wine, and at a dive bar that means the little bottles of Sutter Home or a regular bottle that’s been open for six weeks and tastes like vinegar.”

In contrast, Wine Dive is a come-as-you-are place that happens to serve wines from Ramey Cellars in Healdsburg, Trefethen in Napa Valley and Pride Mountain Vineyards, which famously sits on the county line between Napa and Sonoma. There are about a dozen wines by the glass, including some drafts “from the tank.” Bottles range from modestly priced — like the Richter dry Riesling from the Mosel Valley — to high-end chards, pinots and cabs.

The beauty of a “wine dive” is that low-brow beverages like Blatz and Hamm’s sit shoulder-to-shoulder with heavy hitters like Orval Trappist Ale, Three Floyds Zombie Dust and Duvel Belgian Ale. There are both classic and contemporary cocktails as well.

The spacious restaurant has been opened up a bit by the removal of some half-walls. A stage was constructed in a corner, heaps of beverage paraphernalia will cover the walls, and new TVs have been installed for sports fans.

“We wanted a place where you can enjoy a great bottle of wine while watching the Cavs in the playoffs,” Deagan says.

To eat, there’s a “pub-style” menu offering snacks like buttermilk-fried chicken skin, spicy shrimp tacos and chicken wings alongside housemade chili, chicken club sandwiches, lamb burgers and more.

In a few weeks, the bar will roll out its lineup of nightly specials, such as Monday Steak Night, Taco Tuesday, Wednesday Wing Night, Two-Buck Shuck Thursday and Sunday Sauce Sunday. Weekend brunch will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Dan Deagan to Open Pin High Golf Simulator Facility in Bay Village

Pin High golf simulator to open this winter in Bay Village.

Dan Deagan and a few of his golf buddies had been daydreaming of opening a golf simulator facility in their neck of the woods. Deagan, the man behind Lakewood and Beachwood Truck Parks, among other businesses, said that despite the increased popularity of these attractions, none exist between downtown Cleveland and the far-western suburbs.

As luck would have it, he was presented with a potential property just steps away from Wolf & Co. (27215 Wolf Rd.), the Bay Village wine bar he’s opening this summer with Mandi Burman. That location is Bay Lanes (27229 Wolf Rd.), a bowling alley that is closing this week after decades in business.

“We’ve been talking about this for years,” says Deagan. “It’s just now coming to fruition.”

The 13,000-square-foot, two-level property will become Pin High. Deagan estimates an early winter opening. He and partner Ryan Corbett envision a setup whereby the check-in and restrooms are on the upper level, with the main level below devoted to the golf bays and a large bar. Golfers can expect 12 bays, including some that can be grouped together for larger, semi-private gatherings.

When it opens, Pin High will join a handful of other recent arrivals in the local market, part of a national trend that has its origins in 2020.

“Golf is the fastest growing sport in the country,” he says. “It seems like during the pandemic everyone took up golf because you could be outside. Now, every country club has a wait list. It’s exploded.”

That desire, coupled with advancements in the technology, has resulted in a boom in golf-sim establishments. Golfers in cold climates like ours can play all winter long, selecting from 100s of the best courses in the world. Unlike Topgolf, which is geared more to entertainment seekers, golf simulator technology approximates real play in an immersive environment.

Deagan says he plans to offer clinics for kids, leagues, tournaments and plenty of fun events.

“It’s really important to me that we become a big part of the Bay community,” he says. “I’ve reached out to the coaches of the men’s and women’s high school golf teams, offering free bays to their athletes so they can practice in winter.”

The bar will offer top-flight beer, wine and cocktails alongside a “simple but good” menu of snacks.

“We also want to be a place where you can come to get a snack and some drinks and watch sporting events,” adds Deagan.
