    From a trichologist POV, Kingsley explains that, “there is limited evidence into the guaranteed results of using LED, although there is no harm in trialing this option” as a part of your hair loss/growth journey if you so choose. She echoes the idea that devices using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) [also known as photobiomodulation] have more backing in terms of studies, but that any device is best used in tandem with other hair loss solutions, such as minoxidil “to gain the maximum benefit.” This way, your hair regrowth journey for thicker hair will not rely on just one thing – it will be part of a full treatment plan.


    What kind of LED devices are best for scalp?

    “There are many available on the market, from caps, helmets to combs,” says Dr Raj, who believes the best are “ergonomic, easy to use devices that can be used in smaller areas more consistently.”

    As you’ll see, many brands offer solutions, ranging from caps you wear on your head, to small handheld devices you massage your scalp with. The latter can help to stimulate circulation at the scalp where hair grows, and can sometimes be used alongside scalp scrubs or oils, making them potentially doubly as effective.

    But it’s really down to preference and budget in terms of which hair loss treatment is best for you. LED devices just offer a great non-invasive treatment option, no matter which you choose.


    Are red light therapy devices for hair loss safe?

    Experts I quizzed agreed that genuine, high quality devices (such as the ones we’ve reviewed) are safe – and you should not experience unwanted side effects. That said, you must always follow the specific product’s instructions.

    “Some users may experience mild irritation, redness, or discomfort on the scalp; however, these symptoms are often temporary.” Dr Raj adds that consulting with your doctor or derm is essential if persistent reactions occur.


    How often can you use red light therapy on hair?

    This is very dependent on your particular device, but in general, “consistency is vital across all home use tech and none more so than with hair growth,” according to Newman, who adds that the CurrentBody Helmet, for example, should be used daily.

    Newman explains that “regular usage is key to seeing results, and frequency typically depends on the device type and treatment goals. For example, many LED devices are designed for daily or every-other-day use for 10–20 minutes per session, though specific guidance will depend on the model.” He adds: “Consistent use is critical to achieving and maintaining the desired effects, whether for skin improvement or scalp treatments​.”

    Ferguson and Measures recommend that for their The Light Salon device, you should use it “three to five times a week.” They conclude: “used this often, the number of treatments amounts to 240 a year, making an LED an amazing investment.” Elsewhere, the FAQ 301 device is best used on alternate days.


    How long does it take to see hair growth with red light therapy?

    Unfortunately, there is no solid answer to this – due to varying factors. “Hair type, the level of hair loss and hair density will all contribute to how quickly you see results,” explains Newman. “Also, you would need to consider any other treatment therapies you are using alongside devices, such as oral minoxidil.”

    “Results from red light therapy for hair growth can vary among individuals,” confirms Dr Raj, who adds: “Generally, users may begin to notice improvements within 12 to 24 weeks of consistent treatment. However, the full effects often take several months to manifest.” In other words, it’s crucial to be patient!

    A well-balanced diet

    “Hair is made of 97 percent protein,” says top trichologist, Stephen Carson. “Hair needs sufficient regular amounts of complete protein, vitamins, minerals and water as well as the omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish, fruit and vegetables,” he adds.

    “To ensure your hair is getting the protein it needs to grow, eat at least a palm sized portion of protein at breakfast and lunch. Great examples are fish, eggs, lean meat, low fat cottage cheese, quinoa and pulses,” says Kingsley. “To help ensure that your hair is receiving enough energy for growth (hair cells are the second fastest growing cells the body produces after bone marrow), include a portion of complex carbohydrates with each meal. I.e. brown rice, whole-wheat toast, potatoes with skin-on or oatmeal,” adds Kingsley.

    Supplements and vitamins

    As we’ve established, a healthy, well-balanced diet should be the first line of defence. “Vitamin supplements shouldn’t be a substitute for a varied diet,” says Clarke. But if you’re still struggling to get all the nutrients you need, “supplements can help those with an unbalanced regime,” he says.

    “Your hair has especially high nutritional requirements which can be difficult to meet through diet alone,” Kingsley acknowledges. “Supplements can be very handy in that they provide your hair with easily accessible nutrients.”

    Look for protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin D, Omega 3 and Biotin. “B12 is especially important for vegans, as B12 is only found naturally in animal products,” says Kingsley.     Regular trims

    If you’re on social media, chances are you’ve come across a video (or several) touting the efficacy of rosemary oil for hair growth. Said to thicken hair and lengthen strands, the hashtag #rosemaryhairgrowthoil has amassed over 500 million views (and counting) on TikTok.

    But does it really work? While the ‘before and afters’ are certainly impressive, we want to know if this unlikely remedy can actually boost hair growth and help with hair loss – something that, according to the NHS, 8 million women experience in the UK.

    To delve deeper, we’ve asked the experts to shed light on this wonder herb and whether we should be using rosemary oil for hair. Here’s what they had to say…

    What is rosemary oil?

    Let’s begin with the basics. Rosemary is a herb native to the Mediterranean region. It’s oil, which is pale in colour and has a woody aroma, comes from the plant and is used for aromatherapy, in skincare products as well as haircare.

    What are the benefits of rosemary oil for hair?

    Improves hair growth

    While the research is limited, there’s some evidence to suggest that rosemary oil may help with hair growth. “Studies have demonstrated that rosemary oil can stimulate hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp and promoting the proliferation of hair follicle cells,” says Dr Nick Fisherman, Trichologist at Watermans Hair. “If hair follicles don’t get a sufficient blood supply, they will not get the nutrients they need to grow the hair.”

    One 2015 study comparing rosemary oil to minoxidil (a popular hair regrowth treatment), found that after six months both groups had similar results with a significant increase in hair growth. “Although this study suggested it may be beneficial, there is currently a lack of clinical evidence to recommend rosemary oil as a hair loss treatment,” notes Zoë Passam, Consultant Trichologist at Philip Kingsley.

    Soothes scalp irritation

    “The oil has also been found to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe the scalp and reduce irritation and itching,” adds Fisherman. Essentially, rosemary oil can help create a healthy environment for optimum hair growth. Oh, and in the same study mentioned above, the group using rosemary oil reported less itchiness than those using minoxidil.

    May help prevent dandruff

    “Rosemary oil can also help to restore the scalp’s microbiome balance due to its antimicrobial properties,” explains Dr Bhavjit Kaur, medical aesthetic practitioner. “Since dandruff usually occurs due to an excess of skin fungus (Malassezia), the antimicrobial properties of rosemary may help.”

    How long does it take to see results?

    The science suggests that it may work but as with anything there is a catch, rosemary oil needs to be applied in the right quantities, over a long period of time to see results. “There is limited evidence for rosemary oil as a hair loss treatment, but seeing results from any hair loss treatment takes time, due to the average rate of hair growth, typically 1-1.5cm per month,” says Passam. The experts agree that it takes six months (at least) to see results.
