BACA COUNTY, Colo. — A semitruck driver died in a late-Wednesday night multi-vehicle crash on Highway 287, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said.
Around 11:39 p.m. Wednesday, CSP was called to a crash involving three semis in the southeast corner of the state, just north of the Oklahoma state line.
A 48-year-old man out of Florida was driving a Volvo semitruck hauling a trailer. He was headed southbound on Highway 287, behind a Peterbilt semi also hauling a trailer. In the opposite lane headed northbound on Highway 287, CSP said a 54-year-old man out of Texas was driving a second Peterbilt semi hauling a trailer.
The driver of the first Peterbilt semi crossed over the center line of the road, hitting the 54-year-old Texas driver head on. The first Peterbilt semi truck was then engulfed in flames.
The 54-year-old Texas man drove off the right side of the road before bringing the semi to a stop. The 48-year-old Florida driver also drove off the right side of the road to avoid the crash, hitting a barbed wire fence before coming to a stop.
The first Peterbilt semi truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) dispatch at 719-544-2525 and reference case number VC260027. CSP will ask tipsters for their name and contact information so investigations can reach them.

The driver of an SUV was hit and killed on the side of E-470 late Friday morning by a semi-truck driver, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said.
The wreck happened around 11:42 a.m. Friday, CSP said, after the driver of the SUV pulled over on the side of E-470 and got out of the vehicle to check on something.
Northbound E-470 remains shut down completely between Jordan and Parker Roads while troopers finish the crash investigation and cleanup.
The semi-truck driver remained on scene after the wreck and is cooperating with the investigation, according to CSP.

A 31-year-old man out of Denver was driving a Toyota Matrix hatchback, which was reported stolen to the Aurora Police Department on Monday around 3:30 p.m. The driver was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to CSP.
He lost control of the hatchback driving southbound on Highway 83 and veered off the right shoulder, then over corrected, traveling into oncoming northbound traffic.
That’s when the driver of the Toyota hit a Ford Fusion sedan.
A 35-year-old man out of Colorado Springs was behind the wheel of the Ford Fusion. He had an 8-year-old boy, both a 12-year-old girl and boy, a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy as passengers in the car— all from Colorado Springs as well. The driver, 8-year-old boy, 12-year-old girl and boy, were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy sitting in the back of the sedan were airlifted to a nearby hospital for life-threatening injuries.
The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of those killed after their families have been notified.
The CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating what happened. Originally, a Ford pickup truck behind the sedan was thought to have been involved, but it was later learned the driver of the pickup stopped just before the crash. There was no damage to the pickup and the driver was not injured.
Anyone who observed the crash, but has not yet talked with investigators, is asked to call CSP Dispatch at 303-239-4501.

ARVADA, Colo. — A semitruck crash on westbound Interstate 76 Monday morning ruptured its saddle tank, leaking 100 gallons of diesel onto the highway, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
This was a multi-car crash, involving two other vehicles in addition to the semitruck, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The people involved sustained minor injuries.
I-76 westbound is closed at Federal Boulevard due to safety concerns, between Sheridan Boulevard and Interstate 70, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT is trying to divert traffic onto Sheridan Boulevard, CSP said.
Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber recommended morning commuters not get on westbound I-76 west of Interstate 25, as it appears all lanes of westbound I-76 are blocked west of Sheridan. Even first responders are stuck in the traffic jam, Luber observed.

Luber advised drivers use Pecos Street, Federal, Sheridan or Wadsworth Boulevards instead to get to Interstate 70 west.
CSP is investigating what led up to the crash.

ARVADA, Colo. — The Arvada Police Department announced arrests in an armed robbery and carjacking on Saturday night.
Leonardo Roman-Martinez, 26, is facing second-degree attempted murder, aggravated robbery, second-degree motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding.
Jesus Calva, 39, also faces second-degree attempted murder and aggravated robbery. Separately, he faces possession of Methamphetamine — a controlled substance.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was initially called to the area of W. 54th Ave. and Harlan Street on report of an armed robbery and carjacking. When they arrived, deputies found someone who had been shot multiple times and told law enforcement two people stole his green Chevrolet Silverado.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies used Flock safety cameras to locate his vehicle near W. 58th Ave. and Pierce Street. They tried to block the vehicle, but the carjacking suspects got away from law enforcement.
The two suspects drove onto westbound Interstate 76 but deputies, along with Arvada police officers, pursued them onto westbound Interstate 70.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were able to stop the stolen vehicle. While the suspects tried to run again, deputies took the two into custody. One person was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.
The crime scene was in Arvada police jurisdiction, so the department took over the investigation.

Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened around 9 p.m. on East 120th Avenue and Sable Boulevard and involved a 2017 GMC Sierra, a 2017 Ford Escape and a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
According to CSP, the GMC was heading westbound on East 120th when it struck the rear of the Ford Escape. The GMC then collided head-on with the Jeep Grand Cherokee that was heading eastbound.
The driver of the GMC Sierra — identified as a 48-year-old man — was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office at a later time. CSP said a 5-year-old boy who was a passenger in the GMC Sierra was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Ford Escape — a 24-year-old woman — was not injured in the crash.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee — a 48-year-old man — and his passenger — a 44-year-old woman — were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to CSP.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A law enforcement shooting in the parking lot of an Evergreen Walmart ended in a crash on Interstate 70 that has shut down all eastbound lanes at Lookout Mountain.
Mark Techmeyer, director of public affairs for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, said the “convoluted situation” began with a stolen Ford F-150 out of Summit County. The owner was tracking the truck and working with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
At some point on Thursday, the truck stopped at a Maverik gas station in Clear Creek County. Deputies with the county’s sheriff’s office got involved and tracked the stolen truck to the Walmart in Evergreen just before 5 p.m.
Personnel with the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol set up in the Walmart parking lot in order to recover the vehicle.
The driver of the stolen truck reportedly parked, went inside the Walmart, and came back to the vehicle. According to Techmeyer, the suspect started to drive out of the parking lot when Clear Creek deputies and CSP “lit him up in the parking lot,” meaning they turned on their emergency lights and tried to conduct a traffic stop.
The driver reportedly sped up and rammed the law enforcement vehicles. They then backed up and rammed the vehicles “several times,” according to the sheriff’s office spokesperson.
The CSP trooper got out of their cruiser and fired several shots at the driver and the stolen vehicle, according to Techmeyer. No one was hit.
It is unclear if the driver had a weapon or fired shots at law enforcement.
At one point, CSP said the suspect rammed the stolen vehicle into the CSP cruiser’s driver’s side door, causing the door to strike a trooper in the face.
Denver7
The driver eventually took off, and “the chase was on,” Techmeyer said.
The driver went on eastbound Highway 74 before merging onto eastbound I-70. CSP said the trooper who was struck in the face performed a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) on the stolen truck, causing the driver to crash out near milepost 259. The truck ended up in the emergency truck pull-off area, according to Techmeyer.
The driver suffered injuries from the “ramming” and the crash, Techmeyer said, and was taken to the hospital. The injured trooper was also taken to the hospital.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
Even though the truck was off the road, Techmeyer said law enforcement shut down all eastbound lanes of I-70 because a box marked hazardous for radioactive material was found in the back of the truck. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to the scene and determined that the box contained a tool that had radioactive material in it. The tool cannot be moved until the vendor comes out and retrieves it, according to Techmeyer.
Eastbound I-70 has been closed at Lookout Mountain for several hours. CSP said the roadway should reopen in two to four hours.
The First Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated and will investigate the trooper shooting, while CSP will lead the criminal investigation.
Colorado Department of Transportation
This incident comes one day after a student opened fire at Evergreen High School, critically wounding two of his peers before turning the gun on himself. The shooter died from his self-inflicted injury.
“It’s a lot for this small, tight-knit community in a very small timeframe,” Techmeyer said.
Community members and law enforcement were at a vigil when Thursday’s trooper shooting took place. Techmeyer said the law enforcement presence at the vigil may have contributed to the quick response to the Walmart.
“The bell rings and we come running,” he said.
The sheriff’s office spokesperson did not release the suspect’s identity.

DENVER — Numerous police departments across the United States have reported that the worldwide technology outage affected their 911 service Friday morning, according to Scripps News.
The Colorado Springs 911 Emergency Communications Center was one of them. The Colorado Springs Fire Department reported the impacts on the social media site X, saying in part:
“It’s important to emphasize CSFD is continuing to respond to all emergencies. 9-1-1 phone lines and department radios are NOT affected and regular patrols remain active in the city. We want to remind community members to still call 9-1-1 for any life-threatening situation or crime in progress. Drivers involved in any serious traffic accidents involving death or serious injuries requiring medical attention, or if alcohol or impairment is suspected, should still call 9-1-1. However, if all drivers are present with a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance information and there is no property damage or injury, you can report the accident within 72 hours online.”
⚠️MICROSOFT WINDOWS FAILURE⚠️
The Colorado Springs 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center is currently impacted by the global Microsoft Windows failure and related CrowdStrike issue. It’s important to emphasize CSFD is continuing to respond to all emergencies. 9-1-1 phone lines…
Callers were also able to reach Denver 911 and the non-emergency line despite the global technology outage, according to the Denver Department of Public Safety.
“Denver 9-1-1 was back to full operations at 6:10 a.m. this morning, and all systems are functioning normally at this time,” the Denver Department of Public Safety said.
Aurora police said the department experienced some effects.
“Our CAD dispatch system [computer-aided dispatch] went down about 10:30 p.m. and we had to transition to manual dispatch. CAD was restored about 2 a.m. and we have been operating normally since,” Aurora police said Friday morning.
But 911 phone lines were unaffected by the outage, Aurora police told Denver7.
Colorado State Patrol told Denver7 there were some impacts on dispatch, but none on emergency services. Phones were still working and CSP did not any delays in response times.
Similarly, the Denver Police Department said the outage did not impact fundamental safety services, such as the ability for officers to respond to calls. However, DPD sent Denver7 a statement that said in part:
“The primary impact to DPD patrol operations was that officers were unable to use the laptop terminals in patrol vehicles, and those systems have been restored. During that time, reports that are typically created by officers and submitted electronically were being done as paper reports. The Department is working to restore supporting systems that currently remain offline.”
On the other hand, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office told Denver7 there were no impacts as of 5:50 a.m. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office also said they were also unaware of any issues.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said, the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack — and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.
