    CubeSats are a type of miniaturized satellite typically used for space research. The CubeSat industry has rapidly grown over the last several years, and new general applications are arising as costs for space exploration drop. Hoge Aerospace Institute is building a CubeSat with the capacity to take pictures of itself in low earth orbit, dubbed the Hogesat-1. Individuals will have the opportunity to purchase and send up images of their choice to be displayed in space. 

    “The aim in doing so is to provide the common person a platform to engage with Space Technology in an engaging manner,” states Laith Harbawi, Chief Operations Officer at Hoge Aerospace Institute. It features an outboard display, a camera, and an optical system so that anyone can have their photo displayed with space or the earth as a background. The satellite then snaps a selfie with this photo and beams it back to earth. The communications protocols, optical system, and even ruggedization of the display are exploratory work that will be used for more practical applications of CubeSat technologies.

    Hoge Aerospace Institute has partnered with the College of Charleston in South Carolina to accelerate their space program. The team of engineers and coders led by atmospheric scientist and software developer, Joseph Niehaus, have created a prototype to showcase these applications.

    The HAI team is based out of Charleston, SC. Joseph Niehaus is the Founder and CEO with a background as a software developer and atmospheric scientist. Samuel Joseph, the Chief Integration Officer, is an expert in deep space analytics and blockchain integration. Chief Business Director Nukunu Kwesi Sackey has a business background and a proven record of startup success and the COO, Laith Harbawi has a dual doctorate with degrees in Astronomy and Quantum Physics.     A portion of the funds raised will be used to pay for the costs incurred to take the company public to accelerate its growth and position itself as a key player in the positive impact market.

Maya is a descendant of the planet’s inhabitants who survived the crash of their colonist ship eons ago, and since then adapted to its dangers. Sometimes these adaptations mean they have become dangerous themselves. Max is part of an expedition to Kerpal led by a group of explorers, but some have darker motivations.

    Max and Maya must navigate these dark natural and human challenges as they determine who they can trust and whose animalistic instincts have gotten the better of them, posing grave danger to them and others on Kerpal.

    In an immersive RPG environment, Wild Life gives players the opportunity to engage in visually stunning combat and even more stunning interactions, with details never seen before in a gaming environment.

    With its rich, immersive experiences, Wild Life seeks to break the mold in gaming. As Max and Maya explore Kerpal, players simultaneously experience the desires of the lead characters, driving their interactions with a diverse cast of characters, both human and animalistic.

    Wild Life is currently securing funds via crowdsourcing platforms Kickstarter and Patreon to bring the project to full production. As development continues, the game is available on Patreon for PC play in two modes, Demo and Sandbox.     ​​​​​​​​​MicroElectronicDesign has created a new social distancing device called SafeDistance. This key fob size device quickly provides visual indication of the measured distance by the color of its LED. Like a traffic light, the device shows Green for 2m (6.6feet) or greater, Red for under 1m (3.3feet), and Yellow in between. Based on micropower Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, it’s more accurate and lower cost than radio-based solutions such as Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band (UWB).     “It’s just common sense,” continues Dinesh. “Staying more than 2m or 6.5feet away will dramatically reduce your chances of getting COVID. You can see this in the recent experimental results from Dr Davis.”

    Dr Richard Davis, who is the clinical microbiology lab director at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, tweeted a series of photos that showcased two demonstrations aimed at understanding how effective face masks are at blocking respiratory droplets from an individual’s mouth, while also illustrating the importance of social distancing.

    “I set open bacteria culture plates 2, 4 and 6 feet away and coughed (hard) for ~15s. I repeated this without a mask,” Davis wrote.

    The pictures showed that standing two feet apart with no mask practically covered the Petri dish with bacteria. Davis’ respiratory droplets also managed to land on the dish at four feet away but were reduced to scarce amounts at six feet.

    “Having proof like this makes you wonder why people don’t take physical distancing seriously,” adds Dinesh. “Even if the correct markers are not in place, tinyLiDAR SafeDistance will enable you to maintain the proper safe physical distance by the mere press of a button. Our goal is to make this generally available as a standard tool to help stop the spread of COVID-19.     Norman’s Architecture Adventure, a children’s book that celebrates diversity in the architecture field, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

    “Norman’s Architecture Adventure” is about a young African-American boy who wants to be an architect like his mom. She is his inspiration and best friend but he gets restless one day when she is busy working and he wants to explore. His curiosity gets the better of him as he sets out on his own into the unknown, meets new friends, and learns that having an imagination is the greatest adventure anyone can have.

    This book was inspired by my friend who is one of the youngest female African-American architects in the United States. The story subtly challenges gender and racial roles while celebrating a child’s innocence and imagination. I hope it can be part of a larger movement to encourage greater diversity in the profession I love.

    This incredibly small 0.39 percent represents an opportunity for positive disruption from the top of the profession down to how children are inspired to pursue a life in architecture from an early age.

    The Michigan Folk School is putting down roots in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After hosting classes in various locations since 2011, the school will settle at Staebler Farm Park where it will offer courses in traditional skills like blacksmithing, woodworking, foraging, cheesemaking, canning and animal husbandry. Upon the successful completion of a $40,000 crowdfunding campaign, the non-profit will build a public campus and recreation space. The project’s first phase will include a blacksmithing and woodworking studio, with future planned growth including community garden spaces and multipurpose teaching building.

    It is fitting that the Michigan Folk School will build its campus at Staebler Farm Park, the site of the Staebler homestead for over 100 years. The Michigan Folk School aims to create a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music and skills. By engaging visitors in an inspiring natural setting, the Folk School will honor the agricultural heritage and history of the Staebler land.

    The endeavor is made possible through a partnership with Washtenaw Country Parks and Recreation Commission as well as a matching grant by the Michigan Economic Development Commission (MEDC). The partnership with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission will allow Staebler Farm Park to be open to the public through hiking trails, fishing piers and other access points. Although course fees help the Folk School continue to operate, some courses will be available for free.

    The campaign will run from Nov. 15-Dec. 15. Campaign donations will be matched by the MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) program contingent upon reaching the $40,000 goal through crowdfunding. Interested parties are encouraged to donate and learn more at http://www.patronicity.com/mifolkschool.

    Jason Gold, founder and director, explained what impact the donations will have. “The Public Spaces Community Places program will enable us directly to repurpose a 1947 workshop into a modern handwork woodshop and blacksmithing studio. We will use these studios to offer folk courses and workshops taught by masters of craft, as well as studio space for the community to perfect their craft. But the grant will do more than just repurpose a building; it will initiate a community campus. Once we raise the $40,000, and PSCP matches this amount, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission will install parking, septic and fields, wells and accessible sidewalks throughout the campus area. It will also trigger WCPRC to build a multi-purpose building to be used by the folk school for additional community and visitor programming and studio space.” The additional space will allow the folk school to host more hands-on courses such as stained glass, photography, cheesemaking and canning.

    Public Spaces Community Places is a collaborative effort of the MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League and Patronicity, in which local residents can use crowdfunding to be part of the development of strategic projects in their communities and be backed with a matching grant from MEDC. Communities, nonprofits and other business entities can apply at https://patronicity.com/puremichigan.

    The Public Spaces Community Places initiative started in 2014 with MEDC providing matched funding of up to $50,000 for community improvement projects throughout Michigan. As of June 15, 2017, MEDC has provided $3,766,500 in matching grants. Since the launch of the program, 125 projects have been successful in reaching their goal, with $4.5 million raised from 19,988 individual donors.

    The Shapeshifter is a bendable, shape-able, crush-able, durable, super portable, machine washable, waterproof, extra wind resistant, wide-brimmed sunhat.

    Although sun hats already exist in the market, they are not fully adequate. Wide-brimmed hats that have softer brims lose their shape very quickly and blow into or out of the face in the wind. Also, using them for facial rain protection results in the soft brim buckling, and more often than not, warping the hat’s shape for good.

    Stiff, rigid sunhats (such as those utilized by many outdoor workers) are great in the wind, but are heavy and impossible to collapse for easy storage and transport.

    If the brim has a thin cable support, it’s similarly not compactable, and is still pretty useless in the wind.

    A Better Solution

    Damien searched for and finally discovered the best way to get a strong, bendable, shape-able, resilient and waterproof cable into the brim of a high-quality sunhat.

    He calls it “The Shapeshifter.”
