    Mountain lion found dead on 101, near partially built wildlife crossing in Agoura Hills

    A mountain lion was found dead Saturday morning on the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, not far from a wildlife crossing being built to reduce the number of cougar fatalities.

    The puma’s body was discovered about 5 a.m. in the far right lane of the freeway near Liberty Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Troopers moved the cougar to the shoulder of the highway and enlisted the help of California Fish and Wildlife, which confirmed Saturday morning that it collected the mountain lion’s body for gathering DNA.

    The cougar, which was not wearing a monitoring collar, was killed near the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a $92-million passageway that extends over the busy 10-lane freeway, said Beth Pratt, regional executive director of the National Wildlife Federation. It was likely hit by a car; she said there was fresh blood on the freeway. She said not much else is yet known about the mountain lion, including its age or sex.

    “Obviously we have a solution coming, but it didn’t come soon enough for this cat,” Pratt said. “This is just another harsh reminder that this is the right place [for the crossing].”

    Construction of the wildlife passage began in 2022, and it is set to be completed in 2026. It is considered the largest wildlife crossing in the world, Pratt said, in a much-needed area where mountain lions are known to attempt to cross.

    Already, there are signs that other animals are using the crossing, and by the end of the year, officials hope to begin adding soil and plants to the crossing so that it blends into the environment and creates a safe space for the animals, Pratt said.

    In January, Uno, a female mountain lion often seen patrolling the mountains in Orange County, was killed after being struck by a vehicle on a road near the Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve. The cougar, identified as F312, had been tagged by researchers in 2021 when she was about 2 years old.

    In January 2023, mountain lion P-81 was killed on Pacific Coast Highway, probably struck by a car, the National Park Service announced. The 4-year-old male cougar’s remains were collected on PCH near Las Posas Road in Ventura County.

    In July 2022, mountain lion P-89, a 2-year-old male, was fatally struck by a car on the 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills. That death came about a month after a 5-year-old female mountain lion had been killed by a car in the Santa Monica Mountains.

    A Maryland man said he crossed the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, heading to his second job just moments before the bridge collapsed. Larry DeSantis, who works his job in Pasadena before heading to his overnight shift at Herman’s Bakery in Dundalk, told sister station 11 News that the speed limit on the bridge was reduced to 45 mph due to construction. “I left (the Green Valley Market Place) parking lot at 1:18 a.m. to go over to Herman’s, my normal thing,” DeSantis told sister station 11 News. “When I was getting on (the Key Bridge) there was a tractor-trailer, but it only had a tractor, not the trailer part of it. I got in front of it and we both got on the bridge. Once I got over the top of the bridge, there was a lot of construction going on, so I (was) cautious.”DeSantis said he noticed construction workers just as he was crossing the middle part of the bridge. “It was quite a bit of construction going on because even off the bridge they were doing quite a bit also,” he said.DeSantis believes he and the tractor-trailer following behind, may have been some of the last people to cross the Key Bridge.”There was a police car when I went by, right before I went on the toll bridge, but what I understand is they knew something was going to happen, so (police) were waiting to get word to stop traffic,” he said. “So, I guess I was, like, the last one to get through. Once I got down Peninsula Highway, I saw one speed by, and he went back the other way.”DeSantis said he did not hear the collapse and didn’t even realize it had happened until he got a call from his co-worker checking in on him.”While I’m sitting at the light, the woman here called me and said, ‘Where you at?’ because she knew.     2 seriously injured after being hit by car in West Town

    CHICAGO — Two people were seriously injured after they were hit by a car while crossing the street in West Town on Saturday morning, police say.

    Chicago police said the crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Chicago Avenue.

    According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 69-year-old man was driving westbound in a yellow Ford sedan when he allegedly failed to stop at a red light and struck two pedestrians at the crosswalk.

    The pedestrians, a 46-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, both suffered serious injuries in the crash and were taken to the hospital.

    Police say the driver of the Ford was also injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital in good condition.

    According to police, citations are pending.

    An investigation by the CPD Major Accident Investigation Unit is now underway.

    Labour’s plan for a new $56 billion Waitematā Harbour crossing is heading for the rocks.

    Eight months after then-Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and then-Transport Minister Michael Wood unveiled options for a second harbour crossing, two transport bodies have opposed the preferred option and work has started on cheaper alternatives.

    In August, Labour chose to go with two three-lane tunnels for vehicles and a 21km light rail tunnel between the CBD and Albany that would take decades to build and was priced at an eye-watering $56 billion in a newly released council report.

    The Ministry of Transport and Auckland Transport do not support the road/light rail tunnel plan, and Auckland councillors are expected to join them at Thursday’s transport and infrastructure committee meeting.

    What’s more, the new Government will almost certainly kill the plan for light rail to Albany, but could adopt some of the work for a revised crossing.

    It’s sizzling in Texas and just like humans, snakes are seeking cool places to beat the heat during our record high temperatures. They may be cozied up in the shade of rocks on a favorite hiking trail, in the moist coolness around potted outdoor plants or dark recesses under decks and porches.

    Most of the time, snakes remain aloof and keep their distance from people and pets. But mid-summer is a peak time for snake activity, which increases the chance of a cat or dog crossing paths with the reptile while on a hike or roaming around outdoors.

    Austin Pets Alive! (APA!)  wants to help Austinites keep their furry friends safe by providing the following helpful pointers:

    • Keep dogs on leash while hiking on trails or when outdoors in unfamiliar areas.

    • Keep yards clear of rock piles, stacks of wood or other “covers” that could provide a shady area for snakes.  

    • Be aware that cats sometimes actually seek out snakes.

    Cats and dogs are inquisitive creatures and despite our best efforts to prevent our furry friends from crossing paths with a snake, it may happen. If you see a snake near your pet, assume they may have been bitten. If possible, take a picture of the snake or commit its color pattern to memory, which will help your veterinarian identify next steps. Keep the dog or cat as calm as possible and immediately call your veterinarian or nearest pet emergency center and follow their instructions.

    Sometimes the only clue you will have that your pet may have been bitten will be based on how your pet is acting, especially since snake bites aren’t often visible. Be on the lookout for the following symptoms:

    • Your pet becomes wobbly or unsteady.

    • Your pet exhibits unexpected shaking or trembling.

    • Your pet’s breathing may become fast or shallow.

    • Your dog may vomit within the first hour of being bitten.

    Following these simple steps will help you protect your fur babies from snake bites during this time of high snake activity and extreme heat.
