    TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Four service members were aboard a U.S. Army MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that crashed near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, the Army said in a release Thursday. The Army did not release their conditions.

    The helicopter was on a routine training mission when it crashed at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, an Army official said in a statement. The soldiers were part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Airborne, officials said. The cause of the crash was under investigation, the Army said.

    “This remains an active, ongoing situation,” the release said.

    The crash sparked a small wildfire that had grown to 1 acre (0.4 hectares) by Thursday morning, the Washington Department of Natural Resources said.

    This is “currently a search mission” involving the “most professional and skilled addressing the situation,” Army spokesperson Ruth Castro told The Associated Press in an email. They were fully cooperating with law enforcement, she said. No details were released about the helicopter.

    The base is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Tacoma under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Joint Base Headquarters.

    The Thurston County sheriff’s office, based in Olympia, posted online late Wednesday that deputies were dispatched to reports of a possible helicopter crash in the Summit Lake area, west of Olympia.

    “We have been advised that the military lost contact with a helicopter in the area,” the department said. It said it was working with the base and that no further details were available.

    Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders said on Facebook that deputies located the crash site, “but have been unable to continue rescue efforts as the scene is on fire.”

    The King County Guardian 1 helicopter and special operation rescue units responded to the crash site, the sheriff said.

    Staff with the state natural resources were working with multiple agencies, including the military and the local fire protection district, to battle the fire started by the crash, said Thomas Kyle-Milward, DNR wildfire communications manager.

    One person was killed Monday when a sports car veered off a rural roadway near Pala Casino and crashed into a tree.

    The accident on state Route 76 at Pala Mission Road was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

    The impact toppled the tree, leaving it lying on top of the damaged Ford Mustang, the CHP reported.

    The victim died at the scene of the crash.

    SACRAMENTO — A Riverside County lawmaker accused of driving drunk after a car crash, but cleared by a blood test, took the first step Monday toward suing the Sacramento Police Department, saying officers had tarnished her reputation.

    After Sen. Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) was broadsided by an SUV near the Capitol in May, Sacramento police interviewed the 37-year-old lawmaker for hours at a Kaiser Permanente hospital before citing her on suspicion of driving under the influence. Prosecutors declined to file charges after the toxicology results of a blood test revealed no “measurable amount of alcohol or drugs.”

    In an 11-page filing Monday, Cervantes alleged that officers had retaliated against her over a bill that would sharply curtail how police can store data gathered by automated license plate readers, a proposal opposed by more than a dozen law enforcement agencies.

    The filing also alleges that the police treated Cervantes, who is gay and Latina, differently than the white woman driver who ran a stop sign and broadsided her car.

    “This is not only about what happened to me — it’s about accountability,” Cervantes said in a prepared statement. “No Californian should be falsely arrested, defamed, or retaliated against because of who they are or what they stand for.”

    Cervantes, a first-year state senator, has said since the crash that she did nothing wrong. She represents the 31st Senate District, which covers portions of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and chairs the Senate elections committee.

    Cervantes’ lawyer, James Quadra, said the Sacramento police had tried to “destroy the reputation of an exemplary member of the state Senate,” and that the department’s “egregious misconduct” includes false arrest, intentional infliction of emotional distress and defamation.

    A representative for the Sacramento Police Department declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

    After news broke of the crash, the Sacramento Police Department told reporters that they had “observed objective signs of intoxication” after speaking to Cervantes at the hospital. She said in her filing that the police had asked her to conduct a test gauging her eyes’ reaction to stimulus, a “less accurate and subjective test” than the blood test she requested.

    The toxicology screen had “completely exonerated” Cervantes, the filing said, but the police department had already “released false information to the press claiming that Senator Cervantes had driven while under the influence of drugs.”

    The filing alleges that one police officer turned off his body camera for about five minutes while answering a call on his cell phone. The filing also said that the department failed to produce body camera footage from a sergeant who also came to the hospital.

  • Boulder County boy suffers minor injuries after crashing dirt bike into pickup truck

    BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A Boulder County boy suffered minor injuries after he crashed his dirt bike into a pickup truck Wednesday morning.

    The incident happened in the Safeway parking lot, located at 1601 Coalton Road, around 9:35 a.m. According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was traveling too fast on his dirt bike when he collided with the truck “after being unable to stop in time.” The boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

    BCSO did not provide the boy’s age.

    The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said this incident “reflects a broader concern: more accidents and illegal riding are being reported in the community, particularly involving juveniles on e-bikes, electric dirt bikes, and gas dirt bikes.”

    The sheriff’s office said many of these crashes are linked to speed. Before your child rides, BCSO said they should be able to:

    • Confidently ride in traffic and at intersections
    • Use hand signals and avoid hazards like parked car doors
    • Yield to pedestrians on shared paths
    • Demonstrate safe habits on a regular bike first

    Riders should always wear a helmet, be “smart” about passengers, follow traffic laws and stay visible.

    “Fast and powerful bikes can be exciting, but they also carry serious risks,” said Sergeant Dave Salaman in a statement. “We encourage parents to talk with their children, understand the laws, and make sure young riders are ready before letting them hit the road.”

    When it comes to riding such bikes in Boulder County, the sheriff’s office said “not all bikes are the same” and could be subject to various laws.

    BCSO provided the following legal breakdown:

    • Class 1 e-bike (pedal assist, max 20 mph) – Allowed on multi-use paths and open space trails.
    • Class 2 e-bike (pedal assist + throttle, max 20 mph) – Allowed on multi-use paths; not recommended for children under 16.
    • Class 3 e-bike (pedal assist, max 28 mph) – Restricted to roads and bike lanes. Operators must be 16+, helmets are required under 18, and a speedometer must be installed.
    • Electric motorcycles and dirt bikes – Classified as motorized vehicles and require a motorcycle endorsement, registration, license plates, and insurance when used on public roads. They are not permitted on sidewalks or multi-use trails.

    A motorist driving a BMW at speeds in excess of 100 mph lost control of the vehicle Monday on South Parker Road just and ended up wheels pointed skyward between two horse trailers, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said.

    Authorities said the driver and a passenger were seriously injured in the crash, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. just southeast of the Cherry Creek Reservoir.

    Witnesses told authorities that the driver of the BMW was speeding southbound on South Parker Road just north of South Chambers Road when the sedan left the roadway, crashed through a fence and landed upside down between the trailers. The driver and passenger were taken to a hospital.

    No one else was injured, according to the sheriff’s office. The Colorado State Patrol has taken the lead in the investigation.

  • Motorcyclist who fled Loveland traffic stop dies in crash with SUV moments later

    LOVELAND, Colo. — Police in Loveland said a motorcyclist who fled a traffic stop was killed after the 37-year-old man crashed into an SUV moments later Friday evening.

    The collision occurred around 8 p.m. near Eisenhower Boulevard and Denver Avenue and left the SUV driver with minor injuries and a heavily damaged vehicle, according to the Loveland Police Department.

    Shortly before the crash, a Larimer County deputy attempted a traffic stop on the motorcyclist, who was observed traveling recklessly at a high rate of speed near E. 7th Street and Boise Avenue, police said.

    Police said the rider fled, and deputies terminated the stop after losing sight of the motorcycle.

    The motorcyclist was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he was pronounced deceased. His name has not been released.

    Police said the 37-year-old man was a habitual traffic offender whose license was revoked.

    Police said reckless motorcycle operation is becoming more common in Loveland, with reports coming in daily.

    A man was arrested after stealing a car in East Los Angeles with three children inside, then crashing it in Malibu during a police pursuit Friday evening, officials confirmed.

    The car, a light-colored sedan, was left running with three children inside at a 7-Eleven on East Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A stranger jumped inside the idling vehicle and took off at around 6:38 p.m.

    The California Highway Patrol began pursuing the vehicle minutes later, traveling westbound on the 10 Freeway at Maple Avenue in Los Angeles, the agency confirmed.

    The chase continued until roughly 7:34 p.m., when the sedan appeared to T-bone a light-colored SUV at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Kanan Dume Road in Malibu.

    Following the crash, live footage broadcast from a news helicopter showed the suspect fleeing the scene barefoot and shedding layers of clothes. The man ran through a residential area into a field before being arrested.

    Four people at the scene were taken to a hospital — three by helicopter and one by ambulance, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Three were listed with minor-to-moderate injuries, but no condition was available for the fourth person.

    It is unclear how seriously injured the children were, but they were conscious and breathing after the crash as paramedics removed them from the vehicle, KTLA-TV reported.

    The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

  • Driver Identified In Deadly Columbia River Crash – KXL

    PORTLAND, Ore. – The driver killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday has been identified as 43-year-old Guillermo Soto Briceno of Portland, authorities confirmed.

    Briceno’s body was recovered from the Columbia River following the crash near Northeast Marine Drive and Northeast 122nd Avenue. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office made the identification, and his family has been notified.

    Emergency crews responded around 8:01 a.m. on Aug. 2 after reports of a damaged guardrail and a vehicle overturned in a shallow part of the river. When officers arrived, the vehicle was found empty.

    Portland Fire & Rescue, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search for the missing driver. The Major Crash Team with the Portland Police Bureau later joined the investigation due to the likelihood of a fatality.

    The vehicle was eventually removed from the water. No other occupants were found.
