  • Fayetteville honors 3 killed in crash with Saturday vigil; game rescheduled to Tuesday

    A vigil was held Saturday night for three young men killed in a car crash on their way home from football practice.

    Trevor Merrit, Nick Williams and Jai’Hyon Elliot died Thursday evening on the way to a birthday celebration for a friend. All went to E.E. Smith High School, where they were on the football team.

    Hundreds attented the vigil, with attendess whowering each other with prayer and encouragement.

    “It still hurts; we just want to know why, but I know you can’t question God,” said Jamaar Merrit, Trevor’s father. “He was just an all-around good kid. Colleges were starting to look at him. It was going to be his year.”

    Attendees said the three used to play at a park together long before they were teammates at E.E. Smith. Few knew the three teens better than their teammates. One of them, Deaunta Rush, spoke for others who were overcome with emotion.

    “Trev was going crazy. Nick was going crazy, Jai’hyon was going crazy,” Rush said. “The boys just had so much skill and it was taken from them.”

    E.E. Smith will next play at South View on Tuesday night, and that game will start with a pre-game tribute at 5:30 p.m. for the players. “South View stands shoulder to shoulder with E.E. Smith during this time of heartbreak,” said Principal Phyliss Jackson. “This ceremony is not just about football—it is about family, unity, and reminding one another that we are stronger together.”

    “IT’s going to be hard, but we gotta go out there and play hard and play strong, because that’s what they would want,” said Falou Gueye, a teammate of Elliot, Merrit and Williams.

    On Friday, players from Red Springs saluted the trio by carrying jerseys onto the field. The team held a moment of silence during their game against South Columbus. 

    Police say 21-year-old Dymond Monroe was driving and struck a power pole around 7:22 p.m. Wednesday night on Rosehill Road.

    Monroe survived, but she was in critical condition as of Friday morning.

    Monroe’s mother said the vehicle was on the way to a birthday dinner for Monroe’s 18-year-old brother, a friend of the three football players.

    “In one blink of an eye, you can be gone,” Jamaar Merrit said. “Three lives gon in one instance, that quick, so love on each other, aint nothing worth nobody’s life.”

    Since the crash, a memorial has sprung up along Rosehill Road, and a steady stream of friends and family stopped by on Friday to place flowers and grapple with the stunning loss.

    “It makes me sick to my stomach because he was just here yesterday,” said Janiya Bishop. “It’s never going to feel the same without him.”

  • Des Moines police arrest 13-year-old suspect after chase and crash with stolen Amazon delivery van

    Des Moines police have taken a 13-year-old into custody after the teen allegedly stole a delivery van.Police say an investigation began Wednesday afternoon when an Amazon delivery driver reported their van had been stolen from the 600 block of Walker Street. The van was later spotted by officers near Southeast 14th Street and Park Avenue.The stolen van fled from a traffic stop and crashed into a pick-up truck on Southeast 14th Street. Two occupants in the van ran from the crash but were taken into custody, according to police.The driver, a 13-year-old, was referred to juvenile court for charges of first-degree theft, second-degree theft and eluding.The passenger was not charged.

  • Three E.E. Smith High School students killed when car crashes into telephone pole in Fayetteville

    Three high school students from E.E.
    Smith High School died and another person was seriously hurt Wednesday night in a crash in Fayetteville.

    According to the Fayetteville Police Department, the crash happened around 7:22 p.m. on Rosehill Road. Police did not identify the teenagers but said the car they were in crashed into a telephone pole.

    Police said a fourth person was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill with serious injuries.

    Cumberland County Schools on Thursday released the following statement:

    “Our
    thoughts and prayers are with their families, loved ones and the entire E.E.
    Smith Golden Bulls community during this difficult time.

    The top priority of the E.E. Smith High School administration is to provide
    support to students, faculty and staff as they process this tragedy. The
    district’s Student Services team will be on-site today to offer counseling and
    emotional support.

    Out of respect for the families of those impacted and the school community,
    many of whom are still receiving this news, we are not releasing additional
    details at this time. This morning, there are no interview opportunities with
    the school administration as their focus remains on supporting students and
    staff.”

    Police closed Rosehill Road between Ramsey Street and Country Club Road while they investigated the crash, which police say is ongoing.

    A WRAL photojournalist at the scene said dozens of people were trying to get to the crash site.

  • One person injured in SUV crash Wednesday, Clayton police say

    One person was injured after being struck by an SUV Wednesday night in Clayton. 

    Police responded to the accident around 9 p.m. on Clayton Blvd.

    Video taken by the WRAL Breaking News Tracker showed a Clayton police officer investigating a white SUV with damage to the driver-side bumper.

    Several firetrucks, ambulances, and police officers were also on scene.

    Both eastbound lanes of Clayton Blvd were closed while police investigated.

    WRAL is still working to find out the condition of the person hit and if any charges will be filed to the driver.

No patient was on board. The crash was reported just after 7 p.m. on eastbound Highway 50 just east of Stockton Boulevard. The freeway was closed for hours before crews reopened the roads around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.Few details are known about the crew members, but friends identified the nurse on board as Suzie Smith, a Redding resident.One of Smith’s friends said the nurse would travel to Nicaragua every year to fix cleft palates and described her as the most giving person she’s ever known.”She’s just one of those exceptional people who’s out there using her, you know, her intelligence in that to help people. But just that type of person who will go over there on her own expense and help those people,” said Mary Beaver, a longtime friend of Smith.Her pastor, Travis Osborne, said Smith remains in critical condition as of Tuesday evening. Osborne told KCRA that she’s being treated for numerous injuries, including brain swelling.”We are just praying for a miracle. We know God hears our prayers, and it’s dire. You know, she’s in a dire situation,” said Osborne.Following the crash, a group of around 15 witnesses and bystanders ran to offer assistance, even lifting the helicopter up to free someone who was trapped. I DON’T HAVE THAT INFORMATION EITHER. SORRY. AS FAR AS TRANSPORTS, JUSTIN, YOU MENTIONED, CAN YOU SPEAK TO ANYTHING ABOUT VICTIMS AND THINGS LIKE THAT? YEAH. SO, JUSTIN, SYLVIA, JUSTIN. SYLVIA. CAPTAIN, PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, SACRAMENTO FIRE. OUR UNITS WERE DISPATCHED AT 708 FOR A VEHICLE EXTRICATION ASSIGNMENT. THAT’S ONE ENGINE, ONE TRUCK, AND A BATTALION CHIEF, AS WELL AS AN AMBULANCE. FURTHER UPDATES CAME IN FROM MULTIPLE CALLERS REPORTING A HELICOPTER HAD CRASHED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY 50. AT THAT POINT, WE WERE GETTING INITIAL REPORTS THAT THERE WERE VEHICLES INVOLVED. HOWEVER, AFTER WALKING THE SCENE, THERE ARE NO ADDITIONAL VEHICLES INVOLVED. THE ONLY THREE VICTIMS ON SCENE WERE ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT. THAT’S GOING TO BE A PILOT, A NURSE AND A PARAMEDIC. TWO FEMALES AND A MALE. THEY WERE TRANSPORTED TO LOCAL HOSPITALS. WE COULD NOT OVERWHELM UC DAVIS WITH THREE CRITICAL PATIENTS ALL AT ONCE. THEREFORE, WE CONTACTED UC DAVIS AND ASKED THEM FOR DESTINATIONS FOR THESE PATIENTS VICTIMS. I SHOULD SAY. THEY WERE TRANSPORTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION. SO THAT’S KIND OF WHERE WE’RE AT FOR THE FIRE SIDE OF THINGS. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT THERE WAS ONE VICTIM THAT WAS TRAPPED UNDERNEATH THE HELICOPTER. WE ONLY HAD ONE ENGINE ON SCENE AT THAT POINT. OTHERS WERE TRYING TO MAKE ACCESS TO THE SCENE. THAT ONE PERSON THAT WAS TRAPPED, THE CAPTAIN, IMMEDIATELY SEQUESTERED THE HELP OF JUST CIVILIANS THAT WERE STANDING AROUND. THEY WERE ABLE TO LIFT PART OF THAT HELICOPTER OUT AND GET THAT VICTIM OUT, SO WE COULD GET THEM LOADED INTO THE BACK OF AN AMBULANCE AND TRANSPORTED OFF SCENE. WE HAVEN’T BEEN DOWN THERE. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU SAW? THE SCENE. ANYTHING LIKE THAT. SO THE SCENE BASICALLY LOOKS LIKE A HELICOPTER UPSIDE DOWN THAT HAS CRASHED IN THE FREEWAY. THERE’S A PRETTY LARGE DEBRIS FIELD AROUND THAT AT THIS POINT. THE LUCKY PORTION FOR US, I’D SAY, IS THE FACT THAT THE HELICOPTER DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE, BECAUSE THEN WE WOULD HAVE AN ADDITIONAL PROBLEM TO THAT. WHEN WE OPERATE ON THESE FREEWAYS WITH ANY TYPE OF FIRE RISK. WE DON’T HAVE FIRE HYDRANTS. SO ALL THAT WATER WOULD HAVE TO BE BROUGHT IN. AND IT BEING JET FUEL THAT’S LOADED INTO THESE AIRCRAFTS WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY HOT AND VERY INTENSE FIRE. SO FORTUNATELY WE DID NOT SEE ANY, ANY PART OF THAT. WE’RE EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT THERE WERE ONLY THREE VICTIMS. IT’S UNFORTUNATE THEY’RE IN CRITICAL CONDITION, BUT THEY ALL OF OUR AMBULANCES WERE OFF SCENE WITH TRANSPORTATION AND CARE BEING PERFORMED ON THESE VICTIMS WITHIN 20 MINUTES OF THE INCIDENT, YOU DESCRIBED THAT THEY WERE IN CRITICAL CONDITION. CAN YOU GIVE US ANY IDEA? I MEAN, WERE THEY WERE THEY ALERT WHEN YOU GUYS FOUND THEM? I MEAN, I KNOW YOU MENTIONED SOMEBODY BEING PINNED UNDER THE HELICOPTER. WHAT WAS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN SAY ABOUT THEIR PHYSICAL CONDITION WHEN YOU GUYS ENCOUNTERED THEM? THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IS THAT THEY ARE IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT THIS POINT. IT’S UNKNOWN ON THE EXTENT OF THE INJURIES. WE WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW UP WITH THE LOCAL HOSPITALS TO SEE WHAT KIND OF CONDITION THEY’RE CURRENTLY IN. SO WE REALLY NEED TO FOCUS IN ON GETTING HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN THIS VEHICLE ACCIDENT OR THIS EXCUSE ME, HELICOPTER ACCIDENT THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED VEHICLES. LUCKILY, THERE WERE JUST THREE CRITICAL THAT WERE TRANSPORTED WITHIN 20 MINUTES. CAN YOU DESCRIBE MORE OF THE CHALLENGES YOU GUYS FACE TRYING TO GET ONTO THE FREEWAY? OBVIOUSLY, YOU GUYS ARE COMING FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. TRAFFIC. TRAFFIC IS THE BIGGEST THING FOR US. EVERYONE’S JUST BOUND UP. THERE’S NOWHERE FOR THEM TO GO, ESPECIALLY IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. MAKES IT RATHER DIFFICULT FOR OUR LARGE APPARATUS TO NAVIGATE AROUND. BUT THAT’S WHERE WE GOT TO COME UP WITH THESE PLANS RIGHT AWAY. SO WE ENDED UP USING THE ONCOMING LANES, GETTING ON 59TH STREET TO ACCESS THAT ACCIDENT, BECAUSE ALL TRAFFIC FROM THERE HAD CEASED. AND CHP WAS A HUGE HELP TO US TO STOP ALL THAT TRAFFIC. SO OUR FIRST RESPONDERS COULD REALLY GET IN THERE AND START PERFORMING WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO. WOULD YOU SAY US SAYING THAT THE HELICOPTER CRASHED ONTO THE FREEWAY IS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT? DO WE KNOW IF THEY WERE TRYING TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING? WHAT’S KNOWN ABOUT THAT? THAT’S ALL UNKNOWN. IF YOU LOOK AT IT FROM JUST A BYSTANDER POINT OF VIEW, IT LOOKS LIKE IT CRASHED BECAUSE IT’S UPSIDE DOWN. BUT TO SAY FROM A PROFESSIONAL VIEW THAT IS NOT IN OUR LANE, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT AVIATION EXPERTS NEED TO NAVIGATE THROUGH. BUT WHEN THEY GOT ON SCENE, THE HELICOPTER, THEY THEY REALIZED IT WAS A CHOPPER. IT WAS NOT A VEHICLE. AND THERE WAS SOME HEROIC ACTIONS TONIGHT BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND ONE OF THE THREE PEOPLE ABOARD THAT CHOPPER WAS PINNED UNDER THE CHOPPER, AND THE SAC FIRE CAPTAIN GOT BYSTANDERS FROM THE AREA TO LIFT THAT HELICOPTER OFF OF THAT VICTIM. AND THERE WERE TWO WOMEN, A MAN WHO WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION. WE BELIEVE THAT IS A PILOT, A NURSE AND A PARAMEDIC. AND SO THREE PEOPLE HAVE GONE TO THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION. ALL RIGHT. WE WANT TO SHOW YOU A TRAFFIC MAP BECAUSE THIS IS STILL HAVING SUCH A MAJOR IMPACT ON TRAFFIC RIGHT NOW. YOU CAN SEE WESTBOUND TRAFFIC IS IS MOVING ALONG JUST FINE, BUT CARS ARE STILL STOPPED ON THE ON THE EASTBOUND LANES. WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO NAVIGATE THAT, ALONG WITH THE IMPACT ON TRAFFIC, YOU KNOW, IT COULD BE REALLY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO FIGURE OUT WHAT’S GOING TO TAKE PRIORITY. AND SO WE KNOW WE’VE HAD VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN JUST STUCK THERE ON HIGHWAY 50 FOR HOURS NOW AS THIS WE SAW THE CARS POINTED IN EVERY DIRECTION AS DRIVERS WERE TRYING TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY. SOME OF THEM TURNING AROUND IN THE LITTLE BIT OF SPACE THEY HAD DRIVING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, JUST TRYING TO REACH AN AVAILABLE EXIT. WE KNOW EVEN FROM PEOPLE WHO CALLED OUR NEWSROOMS OR FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN TEXTING US, IT TOOK SOME OF THEM HOURS TO BE ABLE TO FIND THEIR WAY THROUGH ALL OF THIS TRAFFIC. AND LET’S SHOW YOU SOME VIDEO. WE HAVE HERE. PAULA CLEMENT SENT THIS TO US WHERE YOU COULD SEE THE TRAFFIC RIGHT THERE, AND YOU COULD SEE SMOKE THAT APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE SCENE. AND WHAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO DIG UP ABOUT THESE PARTICULAR CHOPPERS. IT’S AN H 130, BUT THEY HAVE. A CRASH RESISTANT FUEL SYSTEMS ON THEM, AND THEY ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT POST-CRASH FIRES BY CONTAINING ANY FUEL. AND IT WAS SOMETHING THAT THE NTSB ACTUALLY RECOMMENDED IN 2016, BECAUSE A YEAR EARLIER THERE WERE TWO CRASHES WHERE THEY SAY THE VICTIMS SURVIVED THE CRASH, BUT THEY ENDED UP BURNING. SO THE NTSB MADE A RECOMMENDATION IN 2016 FOR THESE CHOPPERS TO GET THESE PARTICULAR SYSTEMS ON BOARD. AND WHAT YOU’RE SEEING RIGHT HERE, WE DON’T KNOW IF THAT SMOKE OR IF THAT IS THIS FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM THAT KEPT THIS HELICOPTER FROM CATCHING FIRE. WE CERTAINLY SAW IN SOME OF THE VIDEOS THAT HAVE BEEN POSTED FROM THE SCENE WHAT LOOKS LIKE THAT SUPPRESSION SYSTEM IS COMING UP IN WHITE VERSUS WHAT WOULD NORMALLY BE SEEN FROM A FIRE, WHICH WOULD BE BLACK SMOKE. AND WE HEARD FROM JUSTIN SYLVIA HOW GRATEFUL THEY WERE THAT THEY WEREN’T DEALING WITH A FIRE, BECAUSE IT IS, AS HE WAS SAYING, REALLY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO GET WATER INTO A SITUATION LIKE THIS. AND WITH THE KIND OF FUEL THAT’S ON BOARD, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH. IN ADDITION TO THE IMPACT ON THOSE VICTIMS. SO THIS IS A LOOK RIGHT NOW FROM LIVECOPTER3.     Denver police are investigating a fat hit-and-run crash on the east side of town that killed a pedestrian early Monday morning.

    The department announced the incident on X shortly before 1 a.m., saying a pedestrian had been struck and killed in the area of East Colfax Avenue and Trenton Street in Denver.

    The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and delays in the area were expected as an investigation was launched.

  • Joint funeral held in South Miami-Dade for victims of fatal Florida turnpike crash

    Sounds of music, song and sorrow swelled inside a small South Miami-Dade church on Saturday, as loved ones of victims killed in an August semi-truck crash on Florida’s Turnpike gathered to say their last goodbyes.

    News of the crash made national headlines and landed one man in jail, a truck driver, Harjinder Singh, 28, who authorities say caused the deaths by making an illegal U-turn with his 18-wheeler, blocking the northbound lanes of the highway.

    The crash took the lives of driver Herby Dufresne, 30, and passengers Faniola Joseph, 37, and Rodrigue Dor, 54. The three were visiting South Florida, where they had once lived, before returning home to Indiana. Dor and Joseph died at the scene. Dufresne died later at the hospital.

    Inside Princeton Church of the Nazarene, two white coffins—matching and gleaming under the sanctuary lights—rested side by side holding Joseph and Dufresne. Nearly every seat in the church was filled, the air thick with grief and gospel.

    Dor’s service had been held two weeks earlier on Sept. 20, at Haitian Evangelical Baptist Church. He was laid to rest at Vista Memorial Gardens in Miami Lakes.

    In Princeton, the community came together to mourn Dufresne and Joseph, two friends who had died together and were buried at Palms Woodlawn Cemetery in Naranja.

    Joseph was remembered as a woman of remarkable strength, someone who, as one loved one put it, was “born only to give love.”

    She stood as a pillar for her family—a steady presence and a nurturing soul. At the heart of her life was her daughter, Angeline, whom friends and relatives said Joseph raised to be both resilient and tender, reflecting her mother’s own spirit.

    Angeline was unable to attend the funeral because she lives in the Dominican Republic.

    “She served as a guiding star for her family, and today, even though she is no longer with us, her light will always shine in our memories and prayers,” a loved one said in Creole during the service.

    A loving father, brother and son

    Dufresne was born in Port-au-Prince, the only son among five children, and was the father of two young daughters.

    “He had a lot of love for all his family and friends. When he met you, he would hug you with a big smile on his lips,” said his cousin, Oscar Cedieu, speaking in Haitian Creole.

    The service itself pulsed with sound with horns blaring, drums pounding and voices rising in song. Friends, relatives and reverends took turns at the podium singing in memory of a man who himself had loved music, playing several instruments.

    Yet even the loudest music could not drown out the anguish. Sobs and screams split the air. Women clutched children in their arms, weeping uncontrollably. Some had to be carried out when grief overcame them. At one point, a woman fainted and was lifted out of the church.

    Dufresne’s sister Katy Dufresne painted a picture of her brother: strong, kind, a man who cooked with passion and sang every morning in the kitchen.

    “He loved to sing a lot in the morning,” she said at the podium in Creole. “The first thing that will wake you up is a song.”

    But she also shared his hesitations about leaving Haiti. Though he was approved to come to the United States in December 2023, Dufresne had confessed that he didn’t want to leave their mother behind. Still, he sought a better life. Katy’s last memory of him was their visit together, with Joseph and Dor, just before the crash.

    In one of their final conversations, he had told her she was the strength of their family.

    ‘Justice and reparations’

    The fatal crash rippled far beyond South Florida’s Haitian community—it reached the Sikh community as well. Authorities have charged Harjinder Singh, a Sikh, and the truck driver in the fatal crash, with vehicular homicide. Singh is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail on no bond.

    Sikhs for Justice, an activist group, stepped in to cover funeral costs and pledged $100,000 in humanitarian aid for the victims’ families. The donation came entirely from Dr. Bakhshish Singh Sandhu, a Pennsylvania-based physician and co-founder of the group, who attended Saturday’s service and spoke during the service.

    “No words can measure their loss, but we have stood with them to ensure their loved ones are laid to rest with dignity,” said Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the group’s general counsel.

    The aid was distributed in coordination with Haiti’s Consulate General in Miami. Consul General Yverick Delerme Cyril personally thanked the organization for its support.

    Singh’s immigration status and commercial license sparked national debate, with Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican leaders seizing on the case as a flashpoint in immigration.

    Back inside the church, Joseph’s cousin Fekel Morisette took the podium and called the congregation to its feet.

    “Justice and reparation,” he said—then asked the packed church to repeat the words after him.

  • Cockpit Recorders Studied In ‘Low-Speed Collision’ Of Delta Jets On LaGuardia Taxiway – KXL

    (AP) – Two Delta Air Lines regional jets collided on the taxiway at LaGuardia Airport in New York, injuring a flight attendant, damaging a cockpit and tearing off part of a wing in what the airline described as a “low-speed collision.”

    An aircraft carrying 32 people was preparing for takeoff Wednesday night to Roanoke, Virginia, when its wing made contact with the fuselage of an aircraft arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina, with 61 people aboard, according to a statement from Delta.

    The National Transportation Safety Board said the collision happened at the intersection of two taxiways. The NTSB said it sent a team of 10 investigators to the airport, and flight recorders have already been recovered from both airplanes and sent to its headquarters for analysis.

    It wasn’t immediately clear who was at fault, but air traffic control had instructed the Virginia-bound plane “to hold short and yield to the other aircraft” before the collision, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

    A flight attendant was taken to a hospital, according to a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. One of the pilots told the tower that the flight attendant told him she hit her knee when the planes collided, according to audio that www.LiveATC.net posted. There were no reports of passengers injured, the airline said.

    “Their right wing clipped our nose and the cockpit. We have damage to our windscreen and … some of our screens in here,” a pilot said, according to the air traffic control audio.

    Images of the damage showed the broken wing on one plane while the other plane’s cockpit window was shattered and its nose was deeply gouged in several places.

    The plane that had landed “stopped, jerked, and jumped to the right,” passenger William Lusk told ABC. ”Everyone went dead silent. And as everyone went dead silent, the pilot calmly came on and said, ‘Hey, we’ve been in a crash, everyone remain calm.’”

    Close calls like this could add to worries about aviation safety in the wake of recent crashes and near misses including the deadliest plane crash in the United States in decades, when an Army helicopter collided with an airliner preparing to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

    Former NTSB and FAA crash investigator Jeff Guzzetti said that the ground controller lines up planes on taxiways and directs them where to go, but the pilots are expected to avoid other planes as they move at slow speeds while controllers focus on keeping the runways clear.

    “You’re supposed to have situational awareness about where your wings are poking out at and what they could hit as you’re taxiing,” said Guzzetti, who is now an aviation safety consultant. “They (controllers) expect the flight crews to see each other since they’re taxiing at a slow speed. And the controller’s main function is to make sure the runway is clear for takeoff and landings.”

    Because this happened at night and planes typically turn off their nose lights while taxiing, it may have been more difficult for the pilots to see exactly where the other plane was, Guzzetti said. A plane’s taxi lights are on the wings. The landing lights are used to improve visibility and help make sure other pilots can see the plane, but the FAA encourages pilots to be careful not to blind other pilots because landing lights can also impair night vision.

    “Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else,” the statement from Delta said. “We apologize to our customers for the experience.”

    The Delta Connection aircraft involved in the collision were operated by Endeavor Air. Both are CRJ-900 planes, said the FAA, which is investigating along with the NTSB. The planes can seat 70 to 90 passengers.

    LaGuardia Airport is one of 35 major airports where the FAA has installed advanced surface radar systems that help track aircraft and vehicles on the ground and alert controllers to potential conflicts. It wasn’t clear what role the system played in this collision.

    Guzzetti said he’s not sure if that system would have sounded an audible alarm for these planes on a taxiway even though the system would have shown both planes on a display. The primary purpose of the system is to prevent collisions on runways.

    The passengers on both planes were provided meals and hotel rooms and rebooked on flights leaving on Thursday.

  • 1 killed, 3 injured in Adams County head-on crash

    One person died and three were injured, including a 5-year-old child, during a head-on crash in Adams County on Tuesday, according to the State Patrol.

    State troopers responded about 9 p.m. Tuesday to a three-vehicle crash near East 120th Avenue and Sable Boulevard, according to a news release from the agency.

    A GMC Sierra pickup was driving west on 120th when it struck the rear of a Ford Escape SUV and collided with an eastbound Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, State Patrol officials said.

    The truck driver, an unidentified 48-year-old man, died at the scene of the crash, according to the news release. He will be identified by the county coroner’s office.

    Paramedics took a 5-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the truck, to the hospital with minor injuries, State Patrol officials said.

    The 48-year-old man driving the Jeep and his 44-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to the agency. The 24-year-old woman driving the Ford escaped the crash uninjured.

  • Small plane crash-lands on Colorado Springs road

    A single-engine plane carrying three people crash-landed early Wednesday on a road in Colorado Springs, according to law enforcement.

    The pilot made an emergency landing on Powers Boulevard near Barnes Road, where the plane was leaking fuel, according to a 4:38 a.m. post from the Colorado Springs Fire Department. It’s unknown what forced the pilot to land.

    None of the three people on board the plane was injured, according to fire officials. Photos posted by the fire department show damage to the plane’s wings and tail.

    Two lanes of southbound Powers Boulevard were closed Wednesday morning for the cleanup and investigation, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

    According to CSP, the GMC was heading westbound on East 120th when it struck the rear of the Ford Escape. The GMC then collided head-on with the Jeep Grand Cherokee that was heading eastbound.

    The driver of the GMC Sierra — identified as a 48-year-old man — was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office at a later time. CSP said a 5-year-old boy who was a passenger in the GMC Sierra was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

    The driver of the Ford Escape — a 24-year-old woman — was not injured in the crash.

    The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee — a 48-year-old man — and his passenger — a 44-year-old woman — were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to CSP.

    CSP is investigating the crash. The area of East 120th Avenue and Sable Boulevard is closed at this time. It is unclear when the area will reopen.

    A pedestrian died Saturday night in a crash near Sloan’s Lake, Denver police said.

    The Denver Police Department first posted about the fatal crash near West 17th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard at 10:46 p.m. Saturday.

    That intersection is on the southwest edge of Sloan’s Lake Park.

    The pedestrian, who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene, police said. The unidentified driver stayed on scene after the crash.

    Sheridan was closed in both directions at 17th for several hours during the crash cleanup and investigation, police said. It had fully reopened Sunday morning, according to an 8:18 a.m. update from the department.

    Police said the crash happened in the Near West Side neighborhood’s 2600-block of West Warren Boulevard around 1:50 a.m.

    A 42-year-old man driving a black Dodge SUV rear-ended a Grey Hyundai sedan, which was stopped at a traffic signal, police said.

    Police said the sedan’s driver, a 30-year-old man, suffered injuries throughout his body. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    The SUV’s driver was taken into custody, and charges are pending, police said.

    CPD’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating.

    SEATTLE (AP) — Four U.S. Army soldiers who were part of an elite team that does nighttime missions died when the MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter they were aboard crashed earlier this week near a military base in Washington state, Army officials said Friday.

    The helicopter was on a routine training mission west of the base when it crashed at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command said. The soldiers were part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Airborne, officials said.

    Army officials said recovery efforts are underway, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. They said they would release the soldiers’ names “when appropriate,” out of respect for the families.

    “Our hearts are with the families, friends, and teammates of these Night Stalkers,” said Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, USASOC Commander. “They were elite warriors who embodied the highest values of the Army and the Army Special Operations, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

    The regiment’s mission is to organize, equip and employ Army special operations aviation forces around the world, according to the Army’s website.

    “Known as Night Stalkers, these soldiers are recognized for their proficiency in nighttime operations,” the website said. “They are highly trained and ready to accomplish the very toughest missions in all environments, anywhere in the world, day or night, with unparalleled precision.”

    Law enforcement, firefighters and specialty personnel from the joint base are conducting recovery efforts at the site of the crash, Braga said.

    “We thank the skilled professionals who are working tirelessly, around the clock to bring our soldiers home,” Braga said.

    The crash sparked a small wildfire that had grown to 1.25 acres (0.5 hectares) by Friday morning, the Washington Department of Natural Resources said. The agency said there was “pretty minimal fire activity” so they had one engine on the scene.

    The base is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Tacoma under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Joint Base Headquarters.

    In March 2024, two soldiers from that base were hospitalized when their Apache helicopter crashed at the base during a routine training exercise.

  • Sabrina Cervantes’ attorneys release video footage from crash, encounters with Sacramento police

    Ten days after a California state lawmaker announced legal action against the city of Sacramento over DUI claims, an attorney representing her released video of the crash and excerpts from bodycam footage of her interaction with officers. State Sen. Sabrina Cervantes got into a crash on May 19 at 14th and S streets while on her way to work at the Capitol. The Sacramento Police Department initially said that Cervantes showed signs of intoxication, which led to her being cited. A toxicology report later came back negative. Since then, Cervantes has filed a government claim, which is the first step toward a civil lawsuit. She claims that police arrested her without probable cause in violation of state and federal protections against unlawful search and seizure.On May 30, the police department said it would release bodycam footage but later said it would not do so because it was part of an investigation. However, an attorney representing Cervantes released a heavily edited and narrated video that went into further details about the crash, police reports and the lawmaker’s arrest. The video is part of a supplemental letter sent to the attorneys by the city of Sacramento.The roughly 15-minute video begins with surveillance footage of the crash, showing a gray vehicle not coming to a complete stop before crossing the intersection and eventually colliding with Cervantes’ state-owned vehicle.Next, the video text narrative states a police affidavit claims Cervantes had an “unsteady gait,” showing a part of the report that has that wording. A clip of Cervantes walking is shown next, and she can be heard telling officers, “My back is starting to really get to me.”In the following clip, an officer is heard asking her what hurts, and she can be heard saying her back and spine. But then video text claims police did not disclose her injuries when they requested a warrant from a judge, citing the “unsteady gait.”Another part of the police report is shown, with X marks under “slurred speech” and “slow speech.”More bodycam footage is shown, with an officer asking Cervantes to perform a “horizontal gaze” field sobriety test.”So I guess the question is, can’t I just do a blood test, though?” Cervantes said in response.”I could,” the officer said.As the officer responded to Cervantes’ request for a blood test, text on the screen reads “Perjury by officer,” with the video later revealing part of the report claiming that Cervantes refused requests to do a blood test.Bodycam from an Officer Foster is shown next, where he appears to be taking a phone call, in which he at some point said Cervantes was acting defensive. The clip ends with an audible click and video text claiming Foster had just turned off his bodycam.The video cuts to black and text that reads, “Missing 5 minutes of footage – body cam appears to be turned off.”Following that statement, bodycam from an Officer Williams is played next. He can be heard saying that Cervantes sounded “a little lethargic” but that he could not smell alcohol on her breath.”If I had to, you know, make a wild guess, there is a possibility — I have a reasonable suspicion that she has something on board that’s causing impairment,” Williams said in the video.The video narrative then alleges that officers treated the other driver, who was not named, better compared to Cervantes when interviewing her, stating that she was asked a minimal number of questions.According to the video, the woman was not asked to exit her vehicle or perform a field sobriety test. She is also heard saying she did not have her driver’s license or insurance when asked.After being asked if she has any complaints of pain, the officer is heard concluding his interview with the woman with the following four questions:If she was on her phoneIf she had her seatbelt onIf the airbags deployedIf she was drinkingShe said no to all of those questions.Bodycam footage from three days after shows an officer calling the other driver back with follow-up questions from the crash.”There’s body camera footage of us and things that are written in the report that are slightly different,” the officer said in the video.He asks the woman about Cervantes’ demeanor after the crash, to which she said that she appeared shaken up.The officer then repeatedly asked if Cervantes appeared to have any injuries or signs of blood. The woman again said no to those questions.Video text afterward reads, “Attempts to suggest Senator Cervantes was somehow suspicious for calling for help from inside her vehicle.”The officer noted multiple times that Cervantes was in her vehicle for a while after the crash.Following that phone call, video text states that four days after the crash, Officer Williams filed a report to the DMV that Cervantes refused to do a blood test after her arrest.An excerpt from the report shows “Chemical Test Refusal” is marked with an X. The entire video highlights much of why Cervantes is seeking legal action, alleging false sworn police statements for her arrest warrant, false sworn statements to the DMV and the leaking of false claims to news outlets that she was driving under the influence.The senator also alleges that police retaliated against her “due to her introduction of legislation to curb abuse by police of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems and due to bias related to her identity as an openly LGBTQ+ Latina elected official.”You can watch the entire video here.Cervantes’ attorneys told KCRA 3 they would not release the raw footage. Asked about how much was edited, they said: “The video has been edited for privacy purposes to protect clients, patients, and others.”KCRA 3 has issued a public records request for the raw footage, which police denied.     SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

    Ten days after a California state lawmaker announced legal action against the city of Sacramento over DUI claims, an attorney representing her released video of the crash and excerpts from bodycam footage of her interaction with officers.

    State Sen. Sabrina Cervantes got into a crash on May 19 at 14th and S streets while on her way to work at the Capitol.

    The Sacramento Police Department initially said that Cervantes showed signs of intoxication, which led to her being cited. A toxicology report later came back negative.

    Since then, Cervantes has filed a government claim, which is the first step toward a civil lawsuit. She claims that police arrested her without probable cause in violation of state and federal protections against unlawful search and seizure.

    On May 30, the police department said it would release bodycam footage but later said it would not do so because it was part of an investigation.

    However, an attorney representing Cervantes released a heavily edited and narrated video that went into further details about the crash, police reports and the lawmaker’s arrest. The video is part of a supplemental letter sent to the attorneys by the city of Sacramento.

    The roughly 15-minute video begins with surveillance footage of the crash, showing a gray vehicle not coming to a complete stop before crossing the intersection and eventually colliding with Cervantes’ state-owned vehicle.

    Next, the video text narrative states a police affidavit claims Cervantes had an “unsteady gait,” showing a part of the report that has that wording. A clip of Cervantes walking is shown next, and she can be heard telling officers, “My back is starting to really get to me.”

    In the following clip, an officer is heard asking her what hurts, and she can be heard saying her back and spine. But then video text claims police did not disclose her injuries when they requested a warrant from a judge, citing the “unsteady gait.”

    Another part of the police report is shown, with X marks under “slurred speech” and “slow speech.”

    More bodycam footage is shown, with an officer asking Cervantes to perform a “horizontal gaze” field sobriety test.

    “So I guess the question is, can’t I just do a blood test, though?” Cervantes said in response.

    “I could,” the officer said.

    As the officer responded to Cervantes’ request for a blood test, text on the screen reads “Perjury by officer,” with the video later revealing part of the report claiming that Cervantes refused requests to do a blood test.

    Bodycam from an Officer Foster is shown next, where he appears to be taking a phone call, in which he at some point said Cervantes was acting defensive. The clip ends with an audible click and video text claiming Foster had just turned off his bodycam.

    The video cuts to black and text that reads, “Missing 5 minutes of footage – body cam appears to be turned off.”

    Following that statement, bodycam from an Officer Williams is played next. He can be heard saying that Cervantes sounded “a little lethargic” but that he could not smell alcohol on her breath.

    “If I had to, you know, make a wild guess, there is a possibility — I have a reasonable suspicion that she has something on board that’s causing impairment,” Williams said in the video.

    The video narrative then alleges that officers treated the other driver, who was not named, better compared to Cervantes when interviewing her, stating that she was asked a minimal number of questions.

    According to the video, the woman was not asked to exit her vehicle or perform a field sobriety test. She is also heard saying she did not have her driver’s license or insurance when asked.

    After being asked if she has any complaints of pain, the officer is heard concluding his interview with the woman with the following four questions:

    • If she was on her phone
    • If she had her seatbelt on
    • If the airbags deployed
    • If she was drinking

    She said no to all of those questions.

    Bodycam footage from three days after shows an officer calling the other driver back with follow-up questions from the crash.

    “There’s body camera footage of us and things that are written in the report that are slightly different,” the officer said in the video.

    He asks the woman about Cervantes’ demeanor after the crash, to which she said that she appeared shaken up.

    The officer then repeatedly asked if Cervantes appeared to have any injuries or signs of blood. The woman again said no to those questions.

    Video text afterward reads, “Attempts to suggest Senator Cervantes was somehow suspicious for calling for help from inside her vehicle.”

    The officer noted multiple times that Cervantes was in her vehicle for a while after the crash.

    Following that phone call, video text states that four days after the crash, Officer Williams filed a report to the DMV that Cervantes refused to do a blood test after her arrest.

    The entire video highlights much of why Cervantes is seeking legal action, alleging false sworn police statements for her arrest warrant, false sworn statements to the DMV and the leaking of false claims to news outlets that she was driving under the influence.

    The senator also alleges that police retaliated against her “due to her introduction of legislation to curb abuse by police of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems and due to bias related to her identity as an openly LGBTQ+ Latina elected official.”

    Cervantes’ attorneys told KCRA 3 they would not release the raw footage. Asked about how much was edited, they said: “The video has been edited for privacy purposes to protect clients, patients, and others.”

    KCRA 3 has issued a public records request for the raw footage, which police denied. Police declined again to release the full footage when asked on Thursday.
