A truck driver from Yuba City who was arrested after a deadly crash in Southern California pleaded not guilty in court Friday, according to the San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office. Twenty-one-year-old Jashanpreet Singh is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence, according to a the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Federal officials are speaking out about the case because the driver is believed to be in the country illegally.The crash happened Tuesday in Ontario on Interstate 10 when Singh, who was driving a semitruck, did not slow down, resulting in an eight-vehicle crash that left three people dead and four others injured. Singh made an appearance in court Friday for an arraignment hearing. The San Bernardino County DA said not guilty pleas were entered and all allegations were denied. Singh remains in custody with no bail. His next hearings are scheduled for Nov. 4 and Nov. 6 at Rancho Cucamonga Superior Courthouse. According to the San Bernardino County DA, Singh has no prior traffic violations or criminal history. “He has a common name, and online there has been incorrect information regarding the defendant’s prior criminal history,” the DA said. KCRA 3 reached out to Department of Motor Vehicles regarding Singh’s driver’s license. “The state does not determine commercial driver’s license eligibility. The federal government approves and renews all federal employment authorization documents that allows individuals to work and obtain commercial driver’s licenses,” DMV said.
