    CHICAGO — A person was hospitalized on Saturday afternoon after a double-decker bus crashed into a viaduct in the Loop.

    According to Chicago police, the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive when the bus attempted to exit Lake Shore Drive and turn onto Lower Randolph. During the turn, the bus hit the viaduct.

    Authorities say the crash caused damage to the roof of the bus and one passenger suffered lacerations to their head.

    The passenger was taken to the hospital in fair condition and no other injuries were reported.

    Authorities say no citations were issued and it is unclear if the viaduct suffered any damage during the crash.

    A former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and boyfriend of an L.A. socialite charged with murder in the deaths of two young brothers is responsible for the fatalities because his vehicle struck the boys first, defense attorneys told jurors Friday.

    More than three years after Rebecca Grossman was charged with the murders of Jacob and Mark Iskander, 8 and 11, opening statements began with the defense pointing the finger at Scott Erickson, who they say was the first to barrel through the Westlake crosswalk where the children were hit.

    Tony Buzbee, Grossman’s lead attorney, told jurors “she did not do anything, but someone else did,” adding that authorities never examined Erickson’s vehicle after the deadly incident.

    Witnesses are expected to testify they heard Erickson’s high-powered black Mercedes SUV racing down the street and saw it strike both boys, who were hurled through the air after the collision.

    Buzbee said he will introduce video evidence showing that after the crash, the former Dodger was still traveling 70 mph, a speed the defense says was more than 20 mph faster than Grossman.

    “We will prove that the black car was driven by Scott Erickson, who stopped down the road and hid in the bushes and watched,” Buzbee said. “Scott Erickson’s car hit those children. That’s what … the science in this case will show.”

    Prosecutors, however, argued that Grossman, who was trailing Erickson’s SUV, sped through the marked crosswalk on Triunfo Canyon Road at Saddle Mountain Drive at more than 70 mph.

    Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Ryan Gould said the 60-year-old Hidden Hills socialite had alcohol and drugs in her system, which impaired her driving. He said Grossman only stopped after her Mercedes was disabled by safety systems following the collision.

    Grossman is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. If convicted of all charges, she faces 34 years to life in prison.

    Graphic testimony is expected from Nancy Iskander, who was crossing the street on Sept. 29, 2020, with three of her children when she heard the roar of approaching engines on the quiet 45-mph street. She testified during a preliminary hearing in 2022 that she threw up her right hand in a desperate effort to stop the oncoming vehicles and grabbed her 5-year-old son, Zachary, pulling him to safety. She could not reach Mark and Jacob, who were farther into the street. She said she and Jacob were on inline skates, Zachary was on his scooter and Mark was on his skateboard as the family crossed the residential boulevard. Her husband and daughter were jogging nearby.

    Gould told jurors on Friday that Grossman, who prosecutors say was speeding home behind Erickson after the two had been drinking at a nearby restaurant, “knew what she was doing was incredibly dangerous.”

    Two tests of her blood-alcohol level returned readings of 0.08%, California’s legal limit, and 0.074%/0.075%, court records show. Valium was also found in her blood sample. She is not charged with driving under the influence.

    “She acted with implied malice,” the necessary element prosecutors need to prove second-degree murder, Gould said. “If she was doing the speed limit, she wouldn’t have hit Mark and Jacob; they would have had time to cross.”

    Prosecution witnesses are expected to testify they saw the speeding SUVs, with one describing the sound of the powerful vehicles “like an 18-wheeler.”

    “They make the right-hand turn, and then they punch it,” Gould told the jurors.

    The black box on Grossman’s SUV showed she was going 73 mph at impact, and the distance the boys were thrown — Jacob about 50 feet and Mark 254 feet — supported a speed of more than 70 mph at impact, Gould said. Mark died of traumatic blunt force injury, and Jacob was internally decapitated, he told jurors.

    Gould said Grossman did not stop for over a third of a mile from the intersection and only did so because her Mercedes’ airbag deployed, triggering a fuel shutoff and a call to a safety operator.

    He played a tape of Grossman telling an operator: “I was driving down the road, all of a sudden, my bag exploded.” When a 911 operator on the line with the Mercedes representative asked, “Did they hit a person? They said the two kids were hit on Rollerblades?” Grossman replied, “No.”

    But Buzbee argued his client was not the one to fatally strike the children, suggesting the Iskander brothers “weren’t in the crosswalk,” and instead were cutting a corner. He said the front-end damage to her vehicle was caused when one of the boys — first hit by Erickson — bounced onto her SUV. He also promised an expert would testify why Grossman’s airbag deployed while Erickson’s did not.

    “We will show that the investigation was absolutely terrible,” the lawyer told a jury panel of nine men and three women. “We will show a black AMG Mercedes … is the car that hit the children first,” adding that “multiple eyewitnesses heard two impacts.”

    He said Grossman’s driving was not impaired — she had “a drink and a half in two hours” — and the amount of Valium in her system was barely detectable. He previously argued the pedestrian crossing was a known danger and said video from a nearby home security system the night of the crash will let jurors “see how dark it was.”

    Buzbee said Erickson, 55, lied to sheriff’s investigators about the vehicle he was driving that night, noting that he “stopped down the road and hid in the bushes and watched” as police investigated the crash before going to Grossman’s house, speaking with her daughter and then going home.

    Erickson has denied any wrongdoing in the fatal crash and had a misdemeanor charge against him dismissed after making a public service announcement about the importance of safe driving.

    “We will emphasize science over emotion,” Buzbee said.

    Clad in a navy blue cardigan, white blouse and glasses, Grossman kept her gaze firmly on the jury during opening statements. She hugged her son, daughter and husband — Dr. Peter Grossman, director of the Grossman Burn Center — during a break. Peter Grossman has said he and his wife were separated at the time of the fatal crash.

    “This case is about two families,” Buzbee said. “But no one from our side will try to minimize the tragedy.”

    “Use your courage and find Mrs. Grossman not guilty.”

    Despite massive front-end damage to a Hidden Hills socialite’s Mercedes SUV and witness testimony that she hit two young brothers in Westlake Village, her lawyer is expected to tell jurors that the SUV was one of many vehicles passing through the crosswalk at the time of the deadly incident and that authorities have wrongly focused on her.

    Jurors could begin to hear the competing stories as early as Friday in Rebecca Grossman’s trial on two second-degree murder counts, as well as vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges.

    Los Angeles County prosecutors say Grossman, 60, was behind the wheel of a white Mercedes SUV that fatally struck brothers Mark and Jacob Iskander in September 2020. Authorities say she was driving as fast as 81 mph as she followed former Dodgers pitcher Scott Erickson, whom she had been drinking cocktails with at a nearby restaurant. Prosecutors allege that she traveled a quarter-mile after slamming into the children before her car shut down.

    But Tony Buzbee, Grossman’s lead attorney and former Houston mayoral contender, says he will produce witnesses who’ll testify that multiple cars hit the boys. “The defense’s reconstruction experts will show that Grossman’s vehicle was not the first vehicle to hit the children, and another eyewitness indicated that she was also not the last vehicle that made contact with the children,” Buzbee said in a statement.

    “These witness reports and video existed from the first night of the accident, and instead of trying to identify the other vehicles, the Sheriff took the easy route and focused on the driver of the only vehicle that stayed after the accident occurred, Rebecca Grossman.”

    That video from a house overlooking Triunfo Canyon Road a short distance from the crash site shows several cars passing in the moments after impact.

    Louis Shapiro, a well-known L.A. defense attorney, said Buzbee’s approach is a high-stakes gamble, considering that Grossman faces up to 34 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

    “Unless there is forensic evidence to support a theory that another car was involved, the jury is going to see this as a desperate attempt to absolve her of liability, and it could very much haunt her at sentencing,” he said.

    “Clearly, the prosecution is not willing to offer manslaughter, so it is either go hard or go home for the defense,” he said. “When you throw a Hail Mary [pass], there is a big risk of someone not catching the ball.”

    Buzbee argued in court last week that sheriff’s investigators never checked Erickson’s black Mercedes SUV for damage, even though he drove through the marked crosswalk a few seconds before Grossman. Buzbee said outside court that they also never found the other vehicles that passed through the crosswalk.

    “She is not guilty of any of the accusations that have been made against her. She was not impaired, she was not racing, she was not going the speed that they claim, and she never fled the scene. The fact [is] that so much evidence was concealed, destroyed or simply went missing,” Buzbee said.

    Prosecutors say Grossman and Erickson were romantically involved and driving in separate SUVs from Julio’s Agave Grill to a Westlake Village home the evening of Sept. 29, 2020, when they “raced” through the crosswalk on Triunfo Canyon Road at Saddle Mountain Drive, with Erickson in the lead.

    Two witnesses traveling in another vehicle testified during a preliminary hearing that they saw Erickson’s SUV speeding ahead of Grossman’s.

    Jake Sands testified that the black SUV — Erickson’s — approached the crosswalk first. There, Nancy Iskander and her three sons — Mark, 11; Jacob, 8; and Zachary, 5 — were making their way across the residential street.

    The driver tapped his brakes, Sands testified. “It swerved and avoided the family right before,” he told the court in 2022.

    Yasamin Eftekhari said the white Mercedes — driven by Grossman — was unable to avoid the older boys, who were farther into the street. Iskander was able to grab her youngest son and dive out of the way.

    “There was a family walking in the road. The white car struck the two kids in the road,” Eftekhari said. “The first child to get hit, he was up against the side [of the road]. I didn’t see the second child get hit.”

    Buzbee, however, alleged that a sheriff’s investigator never checked Erickson’s vehicle after the crash and took his word in a phone interview that he was driving his 2007 Mercedes SUV at the time.

    Buzbee told L.A. County Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino that Erickson produced the 2007 Mercedes for examination in civil litigation after the deadly crash. The lawyer then showed a photo of a 2016 Mercedes-AMG that the retired World Series winner acquired in May 2019, alleging that it was the SUV Erickson was driving that day.

    Buzbee said he would produce witnesses at trial to lay the foundation for the photo exhibit, adding that it was particularly relevant because one witness told an investigator she saw two vehicles strike the children seconds apart.

    Deputy Dist. Atty. Ryan Gould said prosecutors had no evidence to support the exhibit. In fact, they didn’t even know who took the photograph that Grossman’s lawyer wanted to use.

    Grossman and her defense team have a website with their version of events. After prosecutors alleged the socialite and the former Dodger were having a relationship at the time of the crash, her husband on the website acknowledged they were separated at the time but were friends.

    Buzbee, a high-powered litigator who successfully defended Texas’ attorney general against impeachment last year, has revealed in pretrial motions a strategy that seeks to highlight shortcomings in the Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigation to sow reasonable doubt once the trial begins. A jury is expected to be seated this week in Van Nuys.

    Erickson, 55, was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving. His case was resolved in February 2022, with a judge ordering him to make a public service announcement geared toward high school students about the importance of safe driving. Erickson has denied any wrongdoing.

    Donald Trump is unlikely to get his wish that a U.S. stock-market crash occurs this year.

    I’m referring to the former U.S. president’s comments last week that he hopes the market crashes in 2024, since if he is elected in November and takes office a year from now, he doesn’t want to be another Herbert Hoover. Hoover was President when the stock market crashed in 1929.

    The stock market did plunge in two of the last four presidential-election years, so it’s understandable why one would worry that 2024 could see a repeat. In 2008, in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis, the S&P 500
    SPX
    lost 38.5% for the year. In 2020, as the economy ground to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the S&P 500 lost 34% in little more than a month’s time.

    It’s possible that a crash could occur at any time, of course, so a crash this year can’t be ruled out. Nevertheless, the odds of one occurring this year are significantly below average. That’s according to the latest “State Street US Froth Forecasts,” which are derived from research on crashes conducted by Robin Greenwood, Professor of Banking and Finance at Harvard Business School.

    In that research, Greenwood and his co-authors found that it’s possible to identify when there is an elevated probability of a crash. In an interview, Greenwood said that “crash probabilities are low” right now, not only for the market as a whole but “across the board” for individual market sectors as well.

    Greenwood’s model is based on a number of factors, such as performance over the trailing two-year period, volatility, share turnover, IPO activity and the price path of the trailing two-year runup. For example, he and his fellow researchers found that when an industry beats the market by 150 or more percentage points over a two-year period, there’s an 80% probability that it will crash — which they define as a drop of at least 40% over the subsequent two years. As you can see from the accompanying chart, State Street is reporting low crash probabilities for all sectors — in each case well below the average forecasted crash probabilities of the past five years.

    These probabilities don’t mean that stocks will have a great year in 2024. A new bear market could begin this year without the decline satisfying the researchers’ definition of a crash.

    Nevertheless, the takeaway from the State Street US Froth Forecasts is that there are bigger things to worry about this year than the possibility of a crash.

    A train car derailed and five people were hospitalized after an Amtrak train crashed into a parked semi truck, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

    The crash occurred around 6:20 p.m. near Sand Canyon Road and East Los Angeles Avenue, also known as California 118, in the unincorporated community of Somis.

    The train, an Amtrak Pacific SurfLiner headed south toward Los Angeles, crashed into a semi that was stopped on the level grade railroad crossing, according to VCFD spokesman Andy VanSciver.

    Five people were injured in the crash, which involved six train cars, though only the lead car derailed.

    Four of the hospitalized victims suffered minor injuries, while the fifth suffered minor to moderate injuries, according to authorities. The train was carrying 90 passengers and five train employees.

    California 118 was closed between Balcom Canyon Road and Somis Road, also known as California 34, and was expected to remain shut down until the morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    A suspected drunk driver last week slammed into spectators waiting to watch a Christmas parade in downtown Bakersfield, injuring three people, police said.

    On Thursday evening, about half an hour before the start of the annual Bakersfield Christmas Parade, a man in a white pickup truck drove backward through an alleyway near the parade route at a high rate of speed, coming to a stop next to a city fire station on 21st Street, the Bakersfield Police Department said in a statement.

    The Ford F-150 hit three male parade spectators, ages 21, 42 and 77. Authorities have not released their names.

    Bakersfield firefighters who were nearby “immediately rendered medical aid” to the men, who were taken to a local hospital and were in stable condition, authorities said.

    The driver, Alan Booth, 72, of Bakersfield, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

    Officer Francisco Esguerra, a Bakersfield police watch commander, told the Times on Saturday night that Booth was at a hospital being treated for injuries related to the crash and had not yet been booked into jail.

    Booth could not be reached for comment.

    Police officers who were preparing for the parade nearby heard the truck accelerate before the collision, authorities said.

    The collision also damaged a food truck, Poppi’s Pastrami & More.

    “He pushed my whole truck. He pushed it like 8 [feet],” Misti Cole, the food truck owner, told KBAK Fox58.

    Photos on the Poppi’s Pastrami & More Facebook page show the Dodge Ram pickup truck that was hauling the food trailer with a smashed front end.

    Cole told the news station that her children were in the food trailer at the time of the crash and that other children had been sitting in chairs nearby to watch the parade.

    “Trucks can be replaced. Those people who got hit, they can’t be replaced,” Cole told KBAK.

    Poppi’s Pastrami, she said, is her family’s main source of income.

    The parade was rerouted and briefly delayed.

    A pedestrian died after he was hit by an LAPD patrol car in Los Angeles on Friday evening, authorities said.

    The crash was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at Century Boulevard and McKinley Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Tony Im said. An ambulance was requested for the pedestrian, who was not conscious or breathing, he said.

    The man died at the scene, Im said.

    An ambulance also was requested for a 30-year-old officer, who suffered pain to her body and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Im said.

    Additional details about the crash were not available.

    The incident remained under investigation, Im said.

    Now the actor and Los Angeles resident will probably be in the market for a new luxury sports car after a similar Italian vehicle linked to him was involved in a collision Saturday night in Hollywood.

    Los Angeles police declined to say who was part of the crash, confirming only that there was an incident about 11:30 p.m. at Sunset Boulevard and North Beachwood Drive. No one was arrested after the incident.

    Several news outlets showed video of a light blue Ferrari 812 Superfast with one of its wheels and side bumpers sheared off. The video also showed a nearby Kia Niro SUV that was badly damaged. Car & Driver reports the Ferrari goes for nearly $430,000.

    KABC7-TV, citing DMV records, reported that the vehicle was registered to Jordan— though it was not known if he was driving it. TMZ reported Jordan was at the crash scene.

    Representatives for the actor didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

    A Bronx driver fatally struck a man on a scooter with her car in a suspected road rage attack, police sources said Sunday.

    Victim Robert Jimenez, 23, was arguing with a 28-year-old woman driving a Honda Civic before she struck him on Fox St. near Intervale Ave. in Longwood about 2:20 p.m. Saturday, cops said.

    Both Jimenez and the Honda driver were headed south on Fox and cops are investigating if the driver was chasing Jimenez when she hit him, sources said. Investigators believe the two were strangers.

    Medics rushed Jimenez to Lincoln Hospital but he couldn’t be saved. He was about two miles from home when he was struck, according to cops.

    Police took the woman into custody. She remains hospitalized and has not yet been charged with a crime.

    A spokesman said police were called to a two-vehicle crash about 10.20am.

    The crash closed the road near the Tutanekai St and Amohau St intersection but it has now reopened.

    Hiria Pohutuhutu was working at Colombus Coffee across the road when she heard a “bang”.

    She “looked straight up” and saw that an elderly man on a mobility scooter was involved.

    Pohutuhutu said she immediately called the ambulance, and ran outside and saw the motorcycle nearby.

    She said the elderly man was lying on his side.

    A passerby began administering urgent first aid.

    ”I didn’t even hear the bike until I heard a bang.”

    He saw other people by the intersection “freaked out” and heard screaming.

    ”I rushed out and called an ambulance.

    “When I got outside the first responders had started showing up.” .

    Emergency services are responding to a crash between a mobility scooter and another vehicle in central Rotorua.

    A spokesman said police were called to a two-vehicle crash about 10.20am.

    The crash is near the Tutanekai St and Amohau St intersection and the road is closed.

    A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said it responded with three trucks about 10.20am.

    She said the crash involved a mobility scooter and a car according to information recorded in the Fenz system.

    A reporter at the scene said a mobility scooter could be seen, along with a motorcycle on the side of the road being photographed by police.

    Amohau St is blocked between Fenton St and Amohia St, and diversions are in place.

    An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer and his front-seat passenger were killed in a car crash early Saturday after a drunk driving suspect sped through a red light in Northridge and slammed into their vehicle, authorities said.

    Officer Darrell Cunningham Shamily, a four-year veteran of the department in his early 30s, and the unidentified passenger were killed in the crash that occurred about 1:15 a.m. near Roscoe Boulevard and Lindley Avenue, police said during a news conference Saturday. An off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy, who was riding in the backseat of Cunningham Shamily’s car, was also injured and transported to a hospital.

    “These were all individuals who were known to each other as lifelong friends,” said LAPD Chief Michel Moore, who called the incident an act of “senseless violence” by the driver of the other vehicle. He said the department would do everything possible to support Cunningham Shamily’s “fiancée, two young boys, mom & two brothers.”

    Brian David Oliveri, 20, the driver of the other vehicle, was injured in the crash and was transported to a hospital, police said. Based on preliminary evidence, it is suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, police said.

    Oliveri is expected to be arrested and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter, Moore said.

    He is believed to have been driving his black BMW at more than 100 mph down Roscoe Boulevard when he ran a red light at Lindley Avenue and crashed into Cunningham Shamily’s white Infinity, which was traveling northbound on Lindley, police said.

    Oliveri’s passenger, an unidentified female in the front seat, was able to exit the vehicle on her own, police said.

    “All others were trapped because of the force and the level of damage created by this horrific collision,” Moore said. L.A. Fire Department personnel were able to free Oliveri and the San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy in the other vehicle using the Jaws of Life. One the vehicles sheared off a fire hydrant in the crash, the fire department reported.

    All three survivors of the crash suffered a number of injuries and are being treated at a nearby hospital, police said. Oliveri was in critical condition.

    The sheriff’s deputy was being treated for a broken hip and other injuries; the woman’s condition was not immediately known. Both were expected to survive.

    Cunningham Shamily and another passenger died at the scene.

    Cunningham Shamily, who worked the overnight shift at LAPD’S West L.A. station, was a “hardworking, honest, a person you can go to get the job done, with a great attitude,” Moore said. “As a department we’re grieving today, but we will work through this and will hold the line, and we’ll work in tribute to the reputation that he held and the work that he did in protecting the citizens of this great city.”

    Moore said that he did not consider a suspected DUI crash to be an accident. “You don’t drive down Roscoe Boulevard at over 100 mph through a red trilight as an accident. That’s willful and gross negligence and criminality, in the sense of reverence for other people’s lives,” he said.

    Alan Ruck is doing fine after crashing his Rivian truck into a Los Angeles pizzeria on Tuesday.

    The “Succession” star was spotted Thursday leaving a convenience store in L.A. and graciously answered a few paparazzi questions about the incident.

    “I’m OK,” Ruck said in the footage obtained by TMZ. “I’m fine and thank God nobody was killed.”

    Representatives for the actor did not immediately respond Friday to The Times’ requests for further comment.

    On Halloween, Ruck’s electric pickup truck smashed into the side of Raffallo’s Pizza in Hollywood. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to The Times that a crash occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Four vehicles were involved in the collision and minor injuries were reported.

    LAPD public information officer Matthew Cruz told The Times on Friday that “there was no crime involved in this incident and there was no arrest.”

    Surveillance footage showed the Rivian traveling south on La Brea approaching Hollywood Boulevard when it rear-ended a vehicle. The impact pushed that vehicle into the intersection, where it then crashed into another vehicle. The Rivian, meanwhile, continued in a southwest direction, clipping a separate car before slamming into the side of Raffallo’s Pizza. Photos show the cab of the truck breaking through the building’s exterior.

    A 32-year-old man from one of the other vehicles was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials told KTLA-TV Channel 5. Ruck was not hurt and was later seen on video speaking with police at the scene, the local news station reported Thursday.

    Law enforcement officials also told KTLA that no charges will be filed as a result of the multicar crash and impairment was not suspected.

    While speaking to paparazzi Thursday, the 67-year-old Ruck acknowledged that he had been limping and wore a brace on his left knee. However, he said, they were not related to the crash.

    “This isn’t from the accident,” Ruck said. “This is because I’m getting old.”

    He also told the videographers that he’s aware that the recent crash is being compared to his famous Ferrari crash scene from his 1986 film, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

    Incidentally, another of Ruck’s injuries made its way into a 2021 episode of “Succession.” The actor tore his shoulder while shoveling snow and the cast that he wore during his recovery was written into a Season 3 episode set inside Kendall Roy’s 40th birthday party. Ruck’s Connor Roy claims he had a fall at his ranch and annoys his younger brother by refusing to take off his coat during the lavish celebration.

    The universe apparently wanted “Succession” star Alan Ruck to get some pizza on Halloween.

    Surveillance video shows a Rivian truck — reportedly driven by Ruck — smash into the side of Raffallo’s Pizza in Hollywood. Los Angeles police confirmed to The Times that a crash occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.

    Four vehicles were involved in the collision, according to LAPD Sgt. Hector Guzman.

    “There were injuries reported, but they appear to be minor,” Guzman said. “Nothing life threatening in nature.”

    “The whole building shook and I thought a bomb or something had exploded,” Tim Ratcliff, who owns restaurants close to Raffallo’s, told KTLA.

    Ratcliff told the outlet that he rushed to help the driver, who “appeared more concerned about the well-being of others than his own.”

    No one involved in the incident was arrested for driving under the influence, police said.

    According to TMZ, Ruck stayed at the scene of the crash. He was seen outside of his vehicle, talking on his cellphone while the damage was assessed.

    The police investigation into the crash is ongoing.

    Desert tarantulas aren’t considered poisonous to humans. That doesn’t mean, however, that they can’t be dangerous.

    A trio of international travelers learned this lesson over the weekend when the brown, hairy spider’s appearance caused a two-vehicle accident in Death Valley National Park that sent one man to the hospital.

    A Canadian motorcyclist crashed Saturday afternoon into the back of a camper rented by a Swiss couple who suddenly stopped in the middle of the road to provide safe passage for a desert tarantula crawling across the highway, according to national park officials.

    The Swiss tourists “were fine,” according to park spokesperson Abby Wines, but the biker was transported via ambulance, roughly 100 miles, to Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, Nev.

    Wines said his injuries “were non-life-threatening,” but no update on the man’s condition was available.

    The spider, according to park officials, “walked away unscathed.”

    Seeing a tarantula above ground is unusual. Park officials said the spider spends most of its time underground. Fall happens to be the one season 8- to 10-year-old male tarantulas leave “their burrows to search for a mate.”

    Female tarantulas are more deadly for males than any wayward car or motorcycle: The females often kill and eat males after mating.

    Park officials described the eight-legged creature, both male and female, as “slow moving and nonaggressive” and said their nonpoisonous bite is “similar to a bee sting.”

    The accident took place along the two-lane California State Route 190 near Towne Pass, which provides western access to the national park.

    “Please drive slowly, especially going down steep hills in the park,” said Mike Reynolds, superintendent of Death Valley National Park, in a statement.

    Reynolds was the first park employee to survey the accident scene.

    “Our roads still have gravel patches due to flood damage, and wildlife of all sizes are out,” he said.

    Part of the state route that was closed due to flooding was reopened on Oct. 15, while other parts of the park and adjacent roadways are still closed.

    The driver accused of killing four Pepperdine students in a high-speed Malibu crash almost two weeks ago has been released on bond, according to jail records.

    Fraser Michael Bohm, 22, faces four counts of malice murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón said at a recent news conference, adding that the charges stem from Bohm’s “complete disregard for the life of others.”

    Prosecutors say Bohm was speeding along Pacific Coast Highway at 104 mph before the fatal collision.

    Bohm pleaded not guilty to the eight felony charges Wednesday in a Van Nuys courtroom, where his bail was initially set at $8 million but the amount was lowered to $4 million during his arraignment. He was released on bond on Friday.

    Bohm was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence following the Oct. 17 crash, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Maria Navarro said. But he was released hours later.

    In a news release at the time, the Sheriff’s Department said he was “released to allow detectives time to gather the evidence needed to secure the strongest criminal filing and conviction.”

    Bohm was re-arrested on Thursday and booked on suspicion of four counts of murder. In the days between arrests, investigators collected additional evidence — including toxicology test and search warrant results and speed analyses — before submitting the case to the district attorney’s office.

    Not much information about Bohm is available in public records. He attended Chaminade Prep and Oaks Christian, two pricey private schools with annual tuition of more than $20,000.

    The BMW driven in the accident was paid for by his parents, Christopher and Brooke Bohm, who lived in a home in a gated Malibu community that was valued at more than $8.7 million, according to the Daily Mail.

    Brooke Bohm filed for divorce in 2017, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court documents.

    The four people killed — Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir and Deslyn Williams — were sisters in the Alpha Phi sorority and seniors at Pepperdine University. Authorities believe they were standing near several parked vehicles in the 21600 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu when Bohm’s BMW barreled into the cars and then struck the women shortly before 9 p.m. on Oct. 17.

    Investigators said they have determined that Bohm was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, but the onboard computer of his car shows he was traveling at 104 mph before he lost control in the deadly collision, according to law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly. It was that data, along with statements made by Bohm, saying he was aware of the posted 45-mph speed limit on that stretch of PCH, that led to the charges against him, sources say.

    But Bohm’s attorney, Michael Kraut, says his client was not traveling that fast. He also has forwarded a claim to prosecutors alleging that another vehicle was involved in the crash. Last week, Kraut said his client is the victim of a road-rage incident on the night of the crash.

    “They ignored evidence of a second car,” Kraut told The Times. “My client was getting away from the guy chasing him.”

    Kraut said another driver “came into the lane and clipped him,” and Bohm “hit the brakes.”

    “The evidence turned over showed at max [he was going] 70 mph,” Kraut said, citing the information he has received in the case, and adding that his client has “totally cooperated” with the investigation and passed a field sobriety test.

    L.A. County sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Arens told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday that he had “no evidence” that the crash stemmed from an alleged road rage incident.

    The collision has renewed calls for safety improvements on PCH, particularly in the area of the crash, which some call “Dead Man’s Curve.”

    A pair of violent collisions — at least one of them fatal — closed down multiple lanes on two major L.A.-area freeways early Monday.

    The northbound 405 in the San Fernando Valley was shut down after a fatal early-morning crash involving several vehicles. The California Highway Patrol told KTLA that the crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at Sherman Way when a Sylmar man, 28, driving an Acura TL collided with a Toyota Camry and a Ford F-250. The Sylmar motorist was killed in the crash, the TV news outlet reported.

    A California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed to The Times that the investigation was ongoing. A SigAlert was issued, and all northbound lanes were closed at Sherman Way until 11:15 a.m.

    The shutdown brought the morning commute to a crawl. Officers were allowing motorists to use the right shoulder to pass, according to the CHP spokesperson. Drivers should anticipate an additional delay of 30 minutes.

    Another crash occurred Monday morning on the southbound 101 Freeway near the shared exit to Santa Monica Boulevard and Western Avenue around 6:45 a.m., KTLA reported.

    A CHP officer said the collision involved injuries but did not confirm any casualties or provide any other details about the crash.

    The two right lanes and the on-ramp to the 101 were closed. But as of 11:30 a.m., all lanes had reopened; the SigAlert alert for this accident expired at around 9 a.m. Caltrans employees, however, could still be in the area cleaning up debris from the crash, the officer said.

    What do authorities say happened?

    It was that data, along with statements by Bohm that he was familiar with the stretch of PCH and that he was aware of the posted 45-mph speed limit, that led to murder charges against him, sources say.

    How has Malibu responded to the crash?

    There has been an outpouring of grief for the victims as well as demands that officials do more to improve pedestrian safety on PCH, which has been the site of numerous accidents.

    The City Council unanimously voted this week to ask staff for a report and to consider a motion to declare an emergency, which would free up resources within its jurisdiction to make PCH safer. But before those actions, nearly 30 people stood up to express their grief and anger about the deadly dangers posed by the stretch of road where the young women were killed.

    Michel Shane is a film producer and father of Emily, who was killed at age 13 by a speeding driver while she was walking on that section of highway in 2010. Shane made a documentary around the incident and told The Times prior to the start of the meeting that he was on hand to push for the California Department of Transportation to make changes to improve safety.

    A petition Shane created on Oct. 20 as a call to action has garnered more than 4,000 signatures.

    Residents and business owners have said speeding is a chronic problem in the area where the accident occurred. They blame Caltrans District 7 for a lack of change.

    Over the last 10 years, Caltrans has counted more than 4,000 collisions along PCH in Malibu, with the primary causes being speeding and improper turns, the city says. After the Oct. 17 crash, Malibu outlined the traffic safety improvements it had already made, including pedestrian crosswalk improvements and traffic signal synchronization.

    But those who spoke at Monday’s meeting were demanding that more be done: speed cameras added, the speed limit reduced and more sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers policing the highway.
