(FOX40.COM) — A crash in Sutter County involving two vehicles has left one person dead and another person with major injuries on Thursday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said the crash happened around 3 p.m. in south Sutter County on Riego Road and Pacific Avenue.
The agency added that it expects Riego Road to be closed until around 6 p.m.

Albert Johnson almost died when he passed out behind the wheel of his car in Fairfax five years ago.

The 77-year-old Fairfax man smashed into a light pole just five years ago after going to the gym and having a cup of coffee at a local restaurant. Once he left the café on April 17, driving west on Route 29, he passed out at the wheel.
“My heart had stopped functioning due to an arrhythmia problem,” he said. “The location, though, was probably pretty good because the police were, you know, there on the street.”
Johnson told WTOP he smashed into a poll across from the old Paul VI High School campus — his foot was still against the accelerator and the tires were spinning, giving off smoke.
That’s when a Fairfax City police officer sprang into action. Paul said the police officer was first to the scene and came up to his car just moments after it happened.
“He had to break into the car, get the window open, drag me out and started CPR,” Johnson said.
A camera in the car recorded the crash and, he said, the video showed smoke pouring out of the vehicle just moments after the crash. However, Johnson said he didn’t understand all that had happened during the crash until seven days later, when he woke up from a coma.
Now, Johnson spends the anniversary of the crash, which he calls his second birthday, thanking the first responders who saved him.
The first time he decided to commemorate the incident and his recovery was during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I didn’t feel like I could go to the grocery store and pick something up, make cookies with my own hands … so I decided to order them in,” Johnson said.
Since then, the Virginian has dropped off snacks and cookies to thank police and fire personnel in the city who saved him that day.

When asked if he plans to continue celebrating this “second birthday” with the city police, Johnson said he definitely will do so.
“Oh yes, I certainly intend to. Every year around the end of March I start thinking, ‘Gosh, April’s coming up. I need to get those cookies,’” he said.
Johnson said his health has improved since the crash. He’s added exercise to his routine and kept working to stay in good health.
“I’m just awfully glad I live here in the City of Fairfax where there’s policemen coming back and forth and they were there to help me,” he said. “And I’m glad I tried to stay in shape.”

A tram vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood threw “multiple” riders to the ground after it struck a guardrail near props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise in an accident that is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the attraction — remain sketchy, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash that injured 15 park visitors.

The tram was driving through the storied Universal Studios back lot shortly after 9 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to authorities.
The linked tram cars passed by a set of props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to “tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram,” authorities said in a news release.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call for service shortly after 9 p.m. for the crash and 15 passengers were transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene but the CHP is the lead agency, a Universal Studios spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor,” Universal Studios said in a statement.
The theme park is working closely with authorities as Universal Studios continues its “review of the incident and safety remains a top priority.”
The Studio Tour tram ride, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this week, will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its “operational and safety protocols.”
The status of the injured passengers was unclear as of Monday.
In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.
Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the blood-thirsty animal in the movie “Jaws,” a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic “Psycho” and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.
Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film “War of the Worlds” to a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele’s 2022 movie “Nope.”
The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the back lot movie sets and props.
The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a two-and-a-half hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.
Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.
The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.
This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween “Fright Nights” show. Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff’s Department said at the time.
While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams, but was trapped between the third and fourth sections of one of the four-section moving trams and was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded “Halloween Horror Nights.”
More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the “Waterworld” show in January 2023. The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show’s finale. The “Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular” show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie’s debut.

Three people are hospitalized after a driver crashed into the front yard of a residence in Van Nuys, authorities said Saturday.
Police were called at 10:34 p.m. Friday to the 15300 block of Saticoy Street regarding a crash, according to Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
When officers arrived, they learned the driver crashed into a home’s yard after colliding with a seating area in front of a Subway restaurant and slamming into several parked vehicles.
The driver was a teenager and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the station.
Paramedics rushed three people to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“The first two patients were not critical and (I’m) not sure of the third one,” Prange said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation and there was no other immediate information.

DRACUT — The driver sent to a trauma center last month after crashing a neon-green Ford Mustang near the Lowell-Dracut line is facing a pile of criminal charges due to the violent single-vehicle wreck that left behind a trail of destruction on Hildreth Street.
Christopher Jopson, 30, of Dracut, is facing a total of 10 charges due to the crash, including five counts of vandalizing property (a felony), and one count each of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, speeding, and marked lanes violation.
This isn’t the first time Jopson has been in this situation, according to Lowell District Court documents.
Jopson was arrested for another alleged reckless single-vehicle crash that occurred with him behind the wheel on Old Road in Dracut nearly two years ago. During that wreck, a Dracut Police report states Jopson totaled another Ford Mustang, this one black.
Court documents additionally show Jopson was arrested in March 2023 for an incident in Dracut that included a response from the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team, and again in June 2023 following a violent episode at the Cornelius F. Kiernan Judicial Center in Lowell.
Each of those cases are pending in court.
The crash on Hildreth Street took place at approximately 12:20 p.m. March 8. First responders arrived to find the brightly-colored and mangled 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 came to a rest in a yard after smashing through a fence in front of 430 Hildreth St. in Lowell.
A Dracut Police incident report states Jopson was entrapped in the vehicle, “unsecured between the driver and passenger seat, with his head at the dashboard and his legs facing the rear of the vehicle.”
Lowell and Dracut firefighters were able to extricate Jopson using hydraulic rescue tools. He was transported to Lowell General Hospital and then flown by medical helicopter to Lahey Hospital in Burlington. Medical records available in court documents state he suffered an elbow fracture, and a facial laceration. Records also state Jopson experienced a seizure, which Jopson’s attorney, Ernest Stone, has said caused the crash.
As for the crash scene, police said debris and car parts from the vehicle spanned approximately 200 feet from the intersection of Hildreth and Hovey streets, to where the vehicle came to a rest. Several bystanders and drivers reported witnessing the vehicle being operated erratically, speeding, traveling on the wrong side of the road, and going through a red light on Hildreth Street just prior to the crash.
“He went around two cars, and he was coming directly at me,” driver Tracey Walton, of Dracut, told The Sun at the scene that day. “Then he switched back into the lane he was supposed to be in. I thought he was going to hit me.”
The laundry list of damaged property from the chaotic crash — which led to the vandalism charges — included a mailbox unit for an apartment complex, a picket fence lining a parking lot by Henry Avenue, a street sign, a cement wall, and a telephone pole that was snapped in half.
Surveillance footage of the vehicle’s treacherous route, captured by cameras at the nearby Hannaford, showed the Mustang went airborne at one point. Police said the Mustang’s estimated speed was 80 to 100 mph. The speed limit in that section of roadway is 30 mph.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles sent a correspondence to Jopson, dated March 11, stating his driver’s license was “suspended indefinitely because of an immediate threat” to public safety, according to the RMV paperwork available in court documents.
Court documents state Jopson was arraigned by Lowell District Court Judge William Travaun Bailey on April 3. Due to this latest arrest, Jopson’s release from custody due to the aforementioned previous charges was revoked, and he was ordered held without bail.
In an affidavit filed in support of a motion to reconsider the revocation of release, Stone stated Jopson suffers from epilepsy, and that he endures seizures multiple times a week. Stone said in the affidavit that Jopson “suffered a seizure without warning while driving causing the crash.”
According to the defense attorney, Jopson is in the process of having a surgery within the coming months to address the seizure disorder, and needs to attend preoperative meetings.
Stone also stated in the affidavit that the Mustang, which had been purchased recently from a dealership in Henderson, Nevada, was both registered and insured at the time of the wreck.
The motion to allow Jopson’s release from custody was ultimately denied by Judge Michael Fabbri following a hearing on April 11.
A Dracut Police incident report states the other motor vehicle crash involving Jopson occurred in the 40 block of Old Road on May 14, 2022. In that crash, Jopson was uninjured. When police arrived on scene, they found him standing outside the totaled 2010 Ford Mustang that had come to a rest in the eastbound lane, facing west.
Jopson claimed, according to police, that he had turned onto Old Road from Sicard Avenue when a car entered his lane, forcing him to swerve. The Mustang spun out, eventually exiting the road and striking a tree stump.
The skid marks in the roadway did not match Jopson’s story, police wrote in the report, adding that a driver who was behind the Mustang at the time of the crash also refuted Jopson’s claims of another car causing the wreck.
The witness told police he observed the Mustang speeding and being operated recklessly, before it crossed the yellow lines and crashed.
The witness said he stopped at the crash scene, where he claimed to hear Jopson tell another bystander “that he was going to tell police that a car pulled out of a side street in front of him and caused the crash so he wouldn’t get in trouble.”
Jopson was subsequently charged with operating to endanger and marked lanes violation.
“The vehicle had the potential to be a danger for any vehicle traveling on Old Road as the vehicle entered both lanes of travel during the incident,” police said in the report. “The vehicle left the roadway on both sides of the road causing potential danger to any possible pedestrians in the area.”
Less than a year later, on March 19, 2023, a Dracut Police incident report states officers were dispatched to a residence on Sicard Avenue for a disturbance involving Jopson and one of his family members. Jopson is alleged to have pulled a 3-inch folding knife on the family member. After the police were called, Jopson retreated into his residence.
Police said they made contact with Jopson, who refused to leave the home “stating he did nothing wrong” and what he did was self-defense. Due to the presence of a weapon, NEMLEC SWAT was summoned. Jopson was ultimately charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
On June 26, 2023, Jopson was charged with vandalism, disruption of court proceedings, and disorderly conduct after he allegedly became irate during a clerk’s hearing in Lowell District Court. An arrest report from a court officer states Jopson punched a table and threw a chair while “yelling and screaming obscenities” until he was taken into custody by officers.
Jopson is slated to return to court for a pretrial hearing on May 14.
Stone declined to comment.

Denver police are investigating after an overnight crash involving a light rail train and a pedestrian turned deadly in the city’s Park Hill neighborhood.
An unidentified man was crossing against warning signals at Quebec Street and Smith Road when the train collided with him, Denver police spokesperson Katherine McCandless said.
Officers responded to reports of the incident about 11:45 p.m. Friday, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, McCandless said.
The Denver Police Department first posted about the crash on social media just after midnight Saturday.
All delays have been cleared from the area, McCandless said.

A car slammed into a parked car and a townhome causing extensive damage early Saturday in north suburban Winnetka, fire officials said.
WINNETKA, Ill. (WLS) — An out-of-control vehicle slammed into a parked car and townhome in north suburban Winnetka early Saturday.
The crash that happened around 3 a.m. near Green Bay and Westmoor waking up the neighborhood.
“It sounded like an explosion,” said Bess Perry who lives next door the townhome.
“It appears that we had a car coming in at a high rate of speed, hit a parked car and then ran into the front of the building causing some structural damage,” said Winnetka Fire Capt. Ryan Banks.
No one inside the home was hurt, Banks said.
The driver was transported to the hospital in an unknown condition, but could be seen trying to run from the scene.
“He got out and started running because I heard them trying to take him down,” said Perry.

A fatal motorcycle crash early Wednesday morning closed Texas 121 to traffic for several hours, according to Fort Worth police.
Shortly after 1:15 a.m., officers responded to the single-vehicle accident on State Highway 121 at North Beach Street in central Fort Worth.
The Fort Worth Fire Department and MedStar provided medical care, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the accident scene, police said in a news release.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the motorcyclist once next of kin have been notified.
All northbound lanes of Texas 121 were closed to traffic while police investigated. The lanes reopened shortly before 9 a.m., police said.
Traffic investigators are asking any witnesses with video or other information about the crash to call the Fort Worth Police Department non-emergency line at 817-392-4222. Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County at 817-469-8477.

Illinois State Police said a crash on I-57 near 147th Street in Posen left two people dead and another injured.
POSEN, Ill. (WLS) — Two people were killed and another injured after a crash on I-57 in the south suburbs Tuesday morning, Illinois State Police said.
Police said a car lost control at about 1:51 a.m. while traveling in the inbound lanes near 147th Street.
Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to a hospital, where they later died. A third person was transported to a hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said traffic is being diverted off at 159th Street and it is not clear when lanes will be reopened.

Avoid Interstate 95 southbound Tuesday morning after a pair of crashes clogged traffic heading into Miami Beach and downtown Miami.
Around 6:40 a.m., a Jeep rolled over at the start of the eastbound Julia Tuttle Causeway, also known as I-195. This backed up traffic to the exit from I-95, and I-95’s problems soon were compounded with a rollover crash just before the exits to 195 and State Road 112.

Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery and crash that took place on I-95 Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place just after 1 p.m. on I-95 northbound in the area of the Walt Whitman Bridge when police received reports of a shooting and subsequent pedestrian crash.
Investigators revealed that the incident involved two people who knew each other and were meeting at Cheerleader’s Lounge so money that was owed could be paid.
When the two individuals met up, police said one of them, identified by police as a 42-year-old man, entered the other man’s car and immediately attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Investigators also noted there was another passenger, a woman, inside the car with the victim.
The suspect ordered the victim to drive onto I-95 where they pulled over onto the shoulder and the victim got out of the car and ran off, according to the police.
The person with the gun then exited the car and attempted to get into the driver’s seat but the doors were locked. The suspect then went to the passenger side and fired five shots into the front passenger window, police said, but was not able to regain entry to the car.
This person then began to run westbound across four lanes of I-95 where they were then hit by the passenger-side front end of a silver Hyundai Elantra sedan which caused the suspect to hit the front windshield and then to propel into the air, according to police.
The suspect sustained damage to the head, a broken foot and other injuries. He was transported to the hospital and placed in very critical condition, police said.
Neither the driver of the car nor the victims were injured.
The car sustained heavy damage to the passenger headlight, passenger front panel and the entirety of the front windshield.
Police were able to recover the gun found on the suspect.
At this time no further information on this incident has been made available by law enforcement.
The Pennsylvania State Police is requesting anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Troop K – Philadelphia, Criminal Investigation Unit at 215-452-5216.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A mother and her 5-year-old daughter are dead after being ejected from their car during a violent crash in East Harris County on Easter Sunday.
The accident happened on US 90 near Uvalde Road around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday.

A family of five was driving eastbound in their gold Toyota Prius when they lost control while exiting the highway, causing the small car to flip several times in a grassy median.
“One witness stated that they estimated they were possibly going around 80-85 mph as they were exiting the freeway,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “At some point, maybe, as they began losing control of the vehicle, perhaps they overcorrected causing them to leave the roadway, leaving a long trail into the grassy area.”
Inside the vehicle was a young couple, according to Sheriff Gonzalez. A 26-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were in the front, but not wearing a seatbelt.
In the backseat were three kids; a 5-year-old girl, a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy, and a 2-month-old girl. All of the children were wearing seatbelts.
The mother, later identified by the Sheriff on social media as Tiffany Rodriguez, and 5-year-old, Ariella, were both ejected from the vehicle, flown to the hospital, and pronounced dead.
“The remaining three, including the adult male, were transported by ambulance,” Gonzalez said. “It’s our understanding that while they were all injured, they are expected to survive their injuries.”
According to preliminary information from investigators, it appears the family may have been going to celebrate Easter.
“It appears that there was some new clothes that they were perhaps going to be wearing today at some point and even some eggs that they were going to be enjoying the day,” the sheriff said.
This is the latest accident in what’s been a violent and deadly weekend across Harris County.
“It’s really tragic when we think of what a deadly weekend it’s been around our county, and not only in terms of murders, but also roadway deaths as well,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “It’s very tragic, especially on such a special day. It breaks my heart coming to some of these scenes and and seeing the small shoes of a toddler especially being a parent. that always hits home.”
According to Sheriff Gonzalez, this crash marks the 45th fatal accident on unincorporated Harris County roads.
“I want to be very clear that these crashes are all preventable. They really are,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “We’re talking about speed. At times, we talk about impairment. We’ve got to be paying closer attention to what we’re doing because if not we’re going to continue to see more carnage on our roadways.”
While the investigation is early, it appears speed is a factor in the crash. It’s unclear who was driving at the time of the accident.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Ronald Jerome Jordan Jr., 48, of Capitol Heights, was driving a Malibu northbound in the Third Street Tunnel when he rear-ended a Ford Transit Wagon at the exit to Massachusetts Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, according to police.
Jordan did not stop after his car rear-ended the Ford, police said, adding that he fled northbound in the tunnel.
Police said that Jordan crossed lanes of traffic and began driving in the shoulder lane before getting back into the main traffic lanes, mounting a curb on the east side of the road, and striking a light pole.
Jordan died at a hospital following the crash.

Police are searching for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice after a multi-car crash in Dallas that injured four people Saturday, according to Dallas police and Star-Telegram media partner WFAA.
A vehicle registered to or leased by Rice, who grew up in North Richland Hills and went to college at Southern Methodist University, was racing another vehicle when the crash happened, sources told WFAA.
Rice did not show up in a search of Dallas County jail records as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police would not confirm to the Star-Telegram whether one of the vehicles was registered to or leased by Rice.
The crash happened around 6:25 p.m. Saturday on North Central Expressway near University Boulevard, according to police. A Lamborghini and a Corvette were racing when the Lamborghini lost control, went into the left shoulder, hit the median wall and rebounded into the highway, causing a chain reaction.
The occupants of both cars got out of their vehicles in the middle of the highway and fled the scene, according to police. They did not exchange information with other drivers, stop to see if anybody was injured or call for police or paramedics. Two people in other vehicles were taken to the hospital with minor injuries; another two injured people were treated at the scene.
Dashcam footage obtained by WFAA shows the two vehicles involved in the race lose control and slam into several others on the highway. The occupants of the Lamborghini are seen getting out of the vehicle and walking to the right shoulder of the road.
Police told the Star-Telegram they are still working to investigate and identify suspects.
Rice, who played football at Richland High School and was recruited by SMU, was a second-round draft pick by the Chiefs in 2023 and part of the team that won the Super Bowl this year.
