    A street sweeper that was hanging off a freeway overpass in Sacramento following a crash Friday morning snarled traffic.

    CHP was dispatched around 6:56 a.m. to the scene on the westbound Highway 50 connector for northbound Interstate 5.

    Bumper-to-bumper traffic was reported on southbound I-5 from Capitol Mall to 6th Avenue, Caltrans District 3 said. All lanes were reopened and the roadway was cleared by 11:40 a.m.

    The sweeper was leaking a minimal amount of fluid, but CHP said it was not enough to warrant a hazardous material response.

    It was unclear what caused the crash or if anyone was injured.

    Man killed by Fort Collins police in cemetery shooting suspected in cold-case homicide

    A 42-year-old man fatally shot by Fort Collins police during an armed confrontation at Grandview Cemetery in July was a suspect in a 2019 cold-case homicide, police officials said Friday.

    Clayton Pierce was shot by Fort Collins police on July 21 after he crashed his vehicle near City Park and fled the scene armed with an “AR-style” rifle and handgun, according to a decision letter published by the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on Friday.

    Pierce was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash and left the scene armed with two “ghost guns,” or guns without serial numbers, which are illegal to own, sell or create.

    Pierce was also carrying a bottle of bourbon with the words “His last day” written on it, according to the district attorney’s letter.

    He pointed the rifle at responding police officers and shot one officer in the arm, according to the agency. He then walked into Grandview Cemetery, where he was fatally shot by police.

    Pierce had twice the legal driving limit of alcohol as well as methamphetamine, THC and gabapentin in his system at the time of his death, according to the letter.

NOW, THE GOOD NEWS HERE FROM THE CHP IS THAT BOTH DRIVERS OF THE OVERTURNED TRUCK AND THE SEDAN WERE OKAY AND ABLE TO EXIT THEIR VEHICLES AS YOU CAN SEE, THOUGH, A LOT OF CLEANUP GOING TO NEED TO BE DONE HERE AS THEY NEED TO OVERTURN THAT. FORTUNATELY, THAT CAR WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE BACKUP AND OVER TO THE LEFT PART OF THE FREEWAY IN THE DIAMOND LANE THERE. BUT THAT CAR FIRE BURNING AND PART OF THE DIFFICULTY THERE WAS TRYING TO GET THE FIRE CREWS TO THAT CAR BECAUSE OF THE BACKED UP TRAFFIC. SO THAT TOOK A BIT OF TIME. FORTUNATELY, THE DRIVER OF THAT VIDEO OF THAT CAR WAS ABLE TO GET OUT AND WAS OKAY AS WELL. NOW BACK OUT HERE LIVE. WE GOT A POSITIVE UPDATE AND THAT IS THAT THE COLLEGE OAKS TOWING CREW, THEY’VE ALREADY UPRIGHTED ONE OF THE FLATBEDS HERE THAT IS PART OF THE STRATEGY HERE IS TO HOOK THAT UP, GET THAT OUT OF HERE. He was inside his home at the time of the crash but was unharmed.”I was on my second floor in my TV room. I heard a loud crash and bang,” Williams said. “Basically the porch absorbed the energy from the bus crashing into it, and when I looked out of the window, I saw the top of the bus where my porch used to be.”WTAE’s Sky 4 news chopper captured a large, accordion-style bus that had crashed through the front porch of a house near an intersection. PRT said in a statement posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the bus crashed into the home after it was hit by a vehicle fleeing from police. Two people, the driver of the bus and a passenger, were taken to a nearby hospital, PRT said. Those injuries are “not thought to be serious.” About eight passengers were on board at the time of the crash.According to PRT, officers from the Monroeville Police Department were reportedly chasing a vehicle that hit the bus. The bus then went off the road and into the house. Monroeville, a Pittsburgh suburb, is located around 14 miles outside of the city.”I had to come out of my back door, and this is what I was presented with, so it’s been a long tedious day here,” Williams said. Witnesses on the scene told WTAE that police were chasing a vehicle that ran a red light. It then hit the bus before the bus crashed into the home. The suspect who police were pursuing fled the scene. Officials have not yet said what led up to the pursuit.Sources tell WTAE that a Monroeville police officer involved in the chase was also taken to the hospital with a broken leg.

    CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas – A Chambers County man now faces a manslaughter charge after running over a bicyclist while driving recklessly earlier this year.

    The accident happened in the early afternoon on April 14 at FM 1405, South of McKinney Road. Adrian Combs was riding his bicycle on FM 1405 when he was struck by the vehicle.

    Upon arrival, officials with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office discovered that Combs’ injuries were fatal.

    Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that hit Combs, Douglas Smith, was driving recklessly and actively on his phone at the time of the collision. He was booked in Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail and charged with manslaughter on Friday.

    According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lopez was arrested and booked into custody on Thursday, July 25. Since then, she has been charged with “DUI WITH DAMAGE TO PROPERTY OR PERSON,” which is a first-degree misdemeanor.

    Additionally, Lopez has been charged with “ABUSE, AGGRAVATED ABUSE, AND NEGLECT OF CHILD.” Furthermore, the sheriff’s office notes that the subsequent charge is a third-degree felony.

    The DUI charge reportedly carries a bond amount of $2,000, while the abuse charge carries a bond amount of $5,000. At this time, Lopez reportedly remains behind bars and has an arraignment date scheduled for August 19.

    According to Fox 35 Orlando, a police affidavit alleges Lopez crashed her Jeep vehicle Thursday morning “at the intersection of Johns Lake and Hancock Roads.”

    Witnesses reportedly called the police. Then, when officers arrived, they reportedly found her car “flipped on its passenger side in a ditch.” Furthermore, they noted that the mother was standing on the sidewalk while her child was allegedly still in the backseat of her car.

    “You may not have a problem with alcohol out there — but if you are drinking and driving, you definitely have a problem with your decision-making,” Lui Delgado, a Certified addiction specialist, told the outlet.

    According to Fox 35 Orlando, Lopez’s child was taken to a hospital and cleared from having experienced any injuries. The child has since been “placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.”

    A Father Was Recently Arrested In Florida On Child Abuse Charges

    The 21-year-old isn’t the only parent to find themselves facing child abuse charges. Earlier this month, authorities arrived at the home of Joseph Gregory Antonsen and found the body of his 9-year-old son decomposing on a couch.

    Additionally, authorities also found trash, diapers, beer cans, and rotten food in his residence. Police ultimately reported that the home had no running water and the corpse of Antonsen’s son had been left at the residence for multiple days.

    An intersection in Vacaville is closed after a major crash, the Vacaville Police Department said Thursday.

    The intersection of Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive is closed while officers investigate, police said. There is no estimated time of reopening for the road.

    KCRA 3 is working to gather details on what caused the crash and how many people were involved.

    Community mourns NYPD officer killed in Deer Park nail salon crash

    NEW HYDE PARK, Long Island (WABC) — It was an emotional day on Long Island as friends, family, and co-workers came together to remember an NYPD officer killed by an out-of-control car at a nail salon in Deer Park.

    A large sign was set up on the street with a picture of Officer Emilia Rennhack outside the home where her funeral was held Saturday in New Hyde Park.

    Rennhack was one of four people killed when an alleged drunk driver crashed into a nail salon in Deer Park last Friday.

    Also killed in the crash were Jiancai ‘Kenny’ Chen, 37, of Bayside, Queens, Yan Xu, 41, of Flushing, Queens, and Meizi Zhang, 50, of Flushing, Queens.

    The 30-year-old was off-duty at the time, getting her nails done for a wedding.

    Officer Rennhack was assigned to the 102nd Precinct in Queens, where her husband is a detective.

    Police say Steven Schwally, 64, was drunk when he plowed an SUV through Hawaii Nail Salon.

    Schwally, of Dix Hills, has been charged with DWI, and additional charges could still be filed against him.

    This is not Schwally’s first DWI incident. He pleaded guilty to similar charges in Suffolk County in March 2013.

    Schwally was held on $1 million cash bail at his arraignment Monday afternoon in Central Islip.

    Prosecutors say he is a Marine Corps veteran who is living at a Motor Inn in Commack.

    He told police he had 18 beers the night before the crash, and stopped drinking at 4 a.m.

    Schwally is due back in court on July 12.

    Westminster man secures posthumous Purple Heart in tribute to WWII veteran father

    World War II Air Force veteran Major Richard Olson never discussed his military service with his son, Dick Olson.

    “I didn’t have all that much time to be asking these questions while he was at home,” Dick, a Westminster resident, told the Denver Post in an interview. “He was a distant father, and I imagine a lot of that came from what happened to him during the war and in service.”

    After Richard died, Dick turned to military archives, old photos and interviews with the surviving members of his father’s B-24 Liberator airplane crew to learn about the veteran’s journey. Through his research, Dick discovered that his father, despite being seriously injured in a plane crash before enduring months as a prisoner of war, had never received a Purple Heart.

    For seven years, Dick worked to correct the oversight. In April, the Air Force agreed to posthumously award Richard a Purple Heart.

    The veteran was 22 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1941, according to his son. The service was renamed the U.S. Army Air Forces in June of that year and became the U.S. Air Force in 1947.

    “He grew up through the Depression and everything else,” Dick told The Post. “I think he joined because he was looking for three square meals a day.”

    Olson later became the co-pilot of a B-24 bomber plane in the 484th Bombardment Group combat unit. A week after D-Day, while stationed in southern Italy, his crew was shot down over the Adriatic Sea by eight German fighter planes while flying to Munich.

    “They lost an engine, and they couldn’t keep up with the rest of the bombers, so they had to turn around to go back,” Dick said. “Two of the gunners were killed on the plane. And then the plane was set on fire and I think they had two more engines shot out.

    “But there was a big fire in the bomb bay so they had to get out of the plane. So they did, and everybody bailed out, the ones that were still alive.”

    Shell fragments struck Olson’s leg and he sustained a back injury that left him with chronic pain.

    Most of the men landed on the Italian coastline northeast of Venice, according to conversations Dick had with B-24 crew member John Hassan. He was transferred to two other POW camps and after 10 months of incarceration, Olson was liberated on April 29, 1945, from Moosburg, Germany.

    “He just said it was a very dull existence and of course they were hungry all the time,” Dick told The Post. “There was not a whole lot to do there. They played sports and the American Red Cross supplied them with books and boardgames and sporting equipment and different things to keep their morale up.”

    Olson stayed in the Air Force for 16 years after his liberation from the POW camp and became a major, father and husband before leaving the military in 1961, according to his obituary.

    “My parents split when I was about 13,” Dick said. “He moved away from the household and they got divorced.”

    After the divorce in 1969, Dick saw Richard three more times before the veteran passed away in 1996 from multiple myeloma.

    “I was always interested in his Air Force career. And since he never talked about these other guys, I wanted to find them and talk to them myself,” Dick said.

    He connected with John Hassan, the navigator in Richard’s B-24 crew, in 1997. “Going through some of his papers, I found a phone number for John and called him up and started looking for all the other crew members also,” Dick said, “I eventually did make contact with the ones that were living or family members for the ones who had passed away.

    “John was my dad’s best friend on the crew and we became really good friends,” Dick added. “He pretty much had a photographic memory, so that’s how I know an awful lot about that crew.”

    While researching the crew, Dick helped the plane’s bombardier, Walter Chapman, get a Distinguished Flying Cross he should have been awarded decades prior.

    Like Chapman, Olson was also missing an award: a Purple Heart for sustaining an injury while in the line of duty.

    “There was mention of everything else, like the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals,” Dick said. “All the ribbons and medals that he was entitled to, except for the Purple Heart.”

    Olson’s capture as a POW right after the B-24 crash meant his wounds went undocumented. In 2017, Dick decided to file a claim with the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records and prove that his father had been injured. “I thought to myself, this is unfinished business, I’ve got to see if I can get this thing,” Dick said.

    After an extensive filing process, the Board for Correction rejected Dick’s request in 2020.

    DEER PARK, Long Island (WABC) — The Long Island nail salon where a suspected drunk driver plowed through the front glass, killing four people is now the site of a growing memorial.

    Among the victims – an off-duty NYPD officer and three members of the salon staff, who were all beloved by the community.

    Hawaii Nail and Spa in Deer Park was where customers used to go to feel beautiful.

    “Last Thursday Joy did my manicure and Jenny did my pedicure. She would always pick my colors,” said customer Patricia Castillo.

    It was where customers felt like family.

    Now, the spa is boarded up and is covered with all the markings of sorrow – candles, flowers and condolences.

    “They were gorgeous. I’ve been going here 15 years. I love them all, they are like family,” added Karen McClorey.

    On Friday afternoon, a speeding SUV crashed all the way through the store, killing three beloved staff members and off-duty NYPD offier Emilia Rennhack, 34.

    Rennhack was getting her nails done for a wedding that night. She was also married to a detective in the same 102 Precinct.

    Suffolk County Police believe the driver was so drunk he turned his vehicle into a weapon. Records show Steven Schwally, 64, has a prior DWI conviction.

    As the community turns to prayers for comfort, they are left with the bitter loss that such gentle souls are now gone.

    A candlelight vigil is planned for Monday night. Given the constant stream of mourners all weekend, the gathering is expected to be quite large and emotional.

    BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The driver of a minivan was killed in a crash with a cement truck in Brevard County on Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

    Troopers said the crash happened in the area of US-1 and 1st Street around 3 p.m.

    According to a crash report, a Chrysler minivan was driving south on US-1 approach 1st Street in the inside lane.

    At the same time, a Mack cement truck was traveling north on US-1, north of 1st Street in the inside lane.

    Troopers said for unknown reasons, the driver of the minivan – identified as an 81-year-old Barefoot Bay man – crossed over the median and entered the direct path of the cement truck.

    As a result, the front of the minivan struck the front of the cement truck.

    According to the report, the driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the cement truck, identified as a 57-year-old Lake Worth man, suffered minor injuries.

    Troopers said debris from the crash struck a nearby pickup truck, but no injuries were reported to the driver or passenger of that vehicle.

    The crash remains under investigation.

    A 28-year-old Denver truck driver was sentenced to 11 years in prison Friday for a deadly Interstate 25 crash that killed a Wyoming family of five.

    Jesus Puebla was sentenced to 11 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections by 19th Judicial District Judge Allison Esser, according to court records and the Weld County district attorney’s office.

    Puebla was convicted of five counts of vehicular homicide after a jury trial in April for the deaths of Emiliano and Christina Godines, 51 and 47; their son Aaron, 20; his wife, Halie Everts, 20; and their 3-month-old daughter, Tessleigh Godinez.

    Puebla also was convicted of vehicular assault, careless driving, reckless driving and two commercial traffic violations.

    Jose Padilla Espinosa was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for his role in a deadly crash.

    An 18-year-old driver who authorities said rear-ended a semitruck in September 2023, causing a fiery deadly crash, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, according to local media reports.

    Cesar Yepez was driving a semitruck carrying food products southbound on Route 28 near Sterling Boulevard, when a speeding Nissan Altima driven by Jose Padilla Espinosa hit him from behind, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

    The truck overturned and caught on fire. Bystanders rushed in to pull Yepez from the flames.

    But two weeks later, the 33-year-old father from Centreville, Virginia, died from his injuries.

    According to NBC Washington, Padilla Espinosa was driving as fast as 111 mph before initially hitting the semitruck.

    In court Thursday, Padilla Espinosa asked Yepez’s family for forgiveness, according to NBC Washington, which also spoke to Yepez’s widow Brianna about her 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.

    “The kids are good. They’re good. They know about daddy not being here, but they’re strong, and we’ll get through it,” she told NBC Washington.

    After the crash last September, WTOP spoke to one of the good Samaritans who tried to rescue Yepez.

    “I heard the driver yelling for help,” Mark Pembleton said. “He was screaming, ‘I have kids, please help me.’”

    Pembleton sustained serious burns to his arms and head.

    “I looked down on my arms and saw how burned they were. The skin looked like it was melted off,” Pembleton said. “If it was any hotter, I don’t think I could have done it, because it was right at the point of where I thought I would instantly burst into flames.”
