While I tend to keep my beauty routine on the simpler side, there’s one product I’ve become somewhat particular about: mascara. I care less about the price tag than I do about the results. Long, voluminous lashes that are clump-free and smudge-proof continue to be my goal, and I’ve managed to achieve the look with both expensive splurges and drugstore finds.

Recently, I traded my $30 mascara for Covergirl Lash Blast Cleantopia Mascara
, which retails on Amazon for just $14, but is on sale right now for $11.

And I have to say, I’m impressed.

I knew it was a winner as soon as I applied it for the first time. It went on smooth, thanks to the hourglass-shaped brush, and I didn’t have to comb through any clumps or brush away flakes.

In recent months, I’ve also moved away from rocking dramatic, statement-making lashes to wanting my eyes to subtly pop, similar to the brighter, more natural look stars such as Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber have been sporting. With Lash Blast Cleantopia, I can achieve that, but at the same time, it’s easily buildable, so on occasion, I’ll apply a few extra coats for a bolder appearance.

However, what really sets this mascara apart is that it’s a vegan, plant-powered formula made up of 72% natural origin ingredients. According to Covergirl, it’s infused with “cellulose plant fibers, aloe leaf extract, ceramide, and sustainably sourced rainforest maracuja oil,” and if paying attention to what’s in your products is important to you, Lash Blast Cleantopia also doesn’t include parabens, mineral oil, talc, fragrance, or sulfates.

All of that means it’s also less likely to irritate my eyes, which is a major plus since I usually suffer from allergies and need all the help I can get during pollen season, AKA spring.

After spending the past few weeks wearing Lash Blast Cleantopia from morning to night, I can also confirm it stays put. I didn’t find myself with dark smudges around my eyes come 5pm, which is another quality I love—and need!—in a mascara.

I’m not the only one who is a fan. On Amazon, the reviews are mostly positive, with many pointing out how easy it is to wash this mascara off at the end of the day.

“Perfect in content and moisture, not too wet or too dry,” writes one happy customer. “Love how it builds up with extra application if you wish a thicker look. Easily to remove with soap and water. Doesn’t clump! Love it!!”

And just like me, people also found the brush to be a major plus.

“Very clean application! Well separated brush for lash volume and definition as well!” someone said. “Pretty sure this will be my new go to. <3”

Another customer praised the gentle formula, revealing that they tried the product after getting a stye in their eye.

“I recently had to deal with a stye,” they wrote. “I am in my 70’s and this was a first for me. Unfortunately, it got infected and it has taken several weeks to finally heal. As a result, I thought it best that I try to be more conscious with using ‘healthier’ mascara. I’ve only been actually using this Cover Girl product for about a month. So far, I am very pleased with it. Thank you for being pro active to the needs of the population who can’t or choose not to use the regular mascara.”

Although I personally have dark hair and dark eyes, those with lighter locks and blue eyes may also want to give this one a go. Reviewers noted that the Ultramarine Black option
has a barely-detectable blue tint that’ll work to highlight your features.

“I had a mascara that had hints of blue years ago and I loved it,” someone commented. “This is almost the same. I don’t like dark black, but this blue goes well with my blue eyes and doesn’t look majorly blue.”

After applying a thin layer, I would say it blurs out imperfections and creates that filtered effect on the skin. You should know that this is more of a sheer-coverage foundation. Usually, I’m not a sheer-coverage girlie in the slightest—I like a buildable medium- or full-coverage foundation, period. If you struggle with acne and dark spots, I’m sure you get it. I was so surprised by how much I loved this. Although it is a bit sheer, you can build up coverage, and it creates a beautiful glow that gives a glass-skin effect.

If you’re someone who really likes skin tints that give you light coverage and offer a glow, I think you’ll love this. Full-coverage folks should also hear me out, though. I see you! I’m one of you! But give this foundation a chance. It looks beautiful on the skin, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. It feels fresh and light on the skin and blurs out imperfections in a nice way. If you have dark spots like me, you’ll probably need to build it up a bit more before achieving your desired level of coverage, but I’ll definitely continue to use this one. The price tag also isn’t too bad at just $21!

  • Kelsea Ballerini Revealed the Real Reason She Cut Her Hair Short

Kelsea Ballerini Revealed the Real Reason She Cut Her Hair Short

StyleCaster cover star — and CoverGirl ambassador, Kelsea Ballerini has a new gig. As if the country music superstar isn’t busy enough, she worked for an entire year on the CoverGirl Exhibitionist Liquid Glitter Shadow Kelsea Ballerini Collection, which just launched in stores and online. It features five rose gold eyeshadow shades, personally created by Ballerini and inspired by her favorite holiday makeup looks.

We caught up with the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and producer to find out more about the glittery collection, her new bob, and how she’s stepping into her “womanhood” at 30 years old.

How to Wear Her Glitter Eyeshadow

Ballerini has been a CoverGirl ambassador since March 2022, something she had been dreaming about since she was a teenager. She was the face of CoverGirl’s Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara ($8.90 at Amazon
) but this is the first collection all of her own. She chose five glittery liquid eyeshadows because you can wear them for any occasion.

“Glitter can be easy breezy beautiful,” she said. “Sometimes glitter has to be in like a bolder look or more of a makeup artist-esque kind of feel. We want something that goes through the holidays through Christmas through New Year’s, so for every party that you go to, every event, you can pick a different color to go more dramatic or more natural. I am such a glitter girl.”

Ballerini made sure to make the shades really wearable. For example, she’d wear the more neutral Golden Magic with “a bolder lip,” she said, plus liner and mascara to make it more dramatic.

How She Came Up With the Shade Names

Ballerini’s touch is in every aspect of the collection, right down to the shade names. She’s a “words girl,” you know. To wit, Golden Magic (an orange rose gold) is “a play off of a lyric in a song of mine called ‘Legends.’ It’s a fan favorite. And the line is, ‘We were golden. We were fire. We were magic.’ So that’s a little ode to the fans,” she said.

Glitter Up (a light pink rose gold) is a play-off “giddy-up” and Sparkly Boots (a nude rose gold) is “because I spent enough time in the Nashville airport to know that I needed to shade for the bachelorettes. This one’s for the girlies; this one is for the bachelorette parties,” she said.

Then, there’s Nashville Dream (a pink rose gold) “because I remember when I was a kiddo, and a preteen, all I wanted to do was move to Nashville. The dream of being in country music felt glittery to me, like it was such a glittery dream that I had,” Ballerini said. Finally, Forever (a red rose gold) is a “beautiful shade” that needed a “beautiful name,” she added.

How Her Beauty Look Has Changed Over the Years

Ballerini turned 30 on September 12, the same day she performed at the MTV VMAs 2023. Now, stepping into “womanhood,” her style has started to change. “I used to be really particular, even when I started touring and stuff,” she said. “I hated blush. I hated brows and you will look at early photos even my first carpets, I would not let anyone touch me with a blush or a brow. I don’t know why.” Now, she likes to experiment.

“I get to work with a lot of really talented makeup artists,” she said. “I love learning from them and just trusting their art as well.” She likes to play with a full “boy brow” and a bare face on some days, a “hyper, hyper-feminine” look on others, and a classic Old Hollywood look. “I think it’s just a form of self-expression and play,” she added.

Why She Cut Her Hair into a Bob

While you’ll still see Ballerini with long locks thanks to extensions, she actually chopped her hair into a bob this past July. Even though bobs are super trendy right now, that’s not exactly why she made the chop. It’s because of one word: “breakage.”

After I got a cut, everyone’s like ‘Oh my gosh, yes, the short hair trend,’ she said. “I’m like, ‘Well thank God it’s a trend’ because I went in to get my roots touched up and my girl that I’ve gone to for years, she was like, ‘Baby girl, tour has done a number. It’s time. Let’s give it the chop.’ And I’m not touring right now. So it’s a good time to just get my hair healthy.”

When she’s not on the road, she gives her hair and skin a break. “For as long as I have, especially the last year, it’s so full out and it’s really hard on your skin,” she said. “It’s hard on your hair. It’s hard on your mental health. It’s hard on your body. And so when I’m in a season like I am right now, where I’m not doing as much traveling, I’m really just in like self-care mode.”

In July, Ballerini told StyleCaster: “I always thought of myself as one thing, which was a glittery, palatable blonde that sings country music. I’ve realized over the last few years, as I’ve woken up to myself, and really stepped into my womanhood, that I’m really open to discovering more of myself.” Since then, she said she’s “just so open.”

“I kind of go with however I feel, just like I didn’t tell anyone I was gonna cut my hair,” she said. “I just did it. Nothing is off-limits to me at this point.” We’ll definitely be watching.
