    Let’s be honest for a moment. Fashion can feel frivolous at times, especially within the context of contemporary couture. It can sometimes feel ostentatious compared to our approachable capsule wardrobe. Because modern couture is inaccessible to most consumers and there’s so much happening in the world, it’s only natural for most to ask, Is haute couture really that serious? I’d never surmise that it would have the weight that so many other topics do in the world, but I’d also never discount its influence. Like it or not, couture has often acted as a reflection of current times—it can tell us what’s happening in the stars and the stock exchange. Long before something blows up on TikTok, you better believe its origins can be traced back to couture fashion week.

    The essence of what’s fashionable always comes back to haute couture because it’s about the craft of making clothing. It’s not about hyperconsumption; it’s about the art. That feels particularly topical as more conversations in the cultural canon center on the idea of adopting the quiet luxury ethos—the shift from keeping up with trends to investing in timeless items. Couture offers people a permission slip to escape from the never-ending trend cycle, and it’s a way to fall in love with well-made clothing again. At best, couture can make us see the world in a new light or, at the very least, change our wardrobes.     After hours of image research, I’ve narrowed down the six best spring/summer 2024 couture collections based on how they made haute couture feel relatable to our everyday lives. Plus, I’ve identified three looks from each show that are easy to re-create with shopping recommendations. Prepare to become a lover of haute couture.

    At the show, Lopez’s work-of-art outerwear clearly stole the show, but in photos posted beforehand by Haenn, the singer and actor’s pants-less ensemble was on full display. Sure, the trend isn’t exactly subtle, but after looking through each image, the controversial aspects of it have begun to slip away. After all, who could argue that Lopez needed to wear true pants with this look or needed to change anything about it at all? I, for one, don’t have a single note for her, her styling team, or Roseberry.

    Every time that Zendaya goes into hiding for a while, her return to the public eye is never subtle, at least not when it comes to her outfit for the occasion. Instead, her reappearance always comes in the most grandeur of fashions, and this time around is no exception. 

    Apart from a few one-off paparazzi sightings, Zendaya’s been pretty off the grid lately, but she broke this trend this morning when she arrived at the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris donning what can only be described as a masterpiece. At the show—alongside her stylist Law Roach, her Euphoria co-star Hunter Schafer, and Jennifer Lopez—the Dune star chose a black, fitted mock-neck top decorated with tiny satin knot details along the sleeves that she paired with a floor-length skirt that featured draped fabric across the waist and a long tail-like train. She added fishnet knee-high socks and a pair of black suede Louboutins.

    Paris Couture Fashion Week for the F/W 23 season just wrapped up, and it’s time to recap. Specifically, we should discuss street style. As expected, the show attendees really leaned into the quiet luxury trend with their chosen outfits, accessories, and the trends they chose to wear. This provided a contrast to the often extravagant looks that populate the runways during Couture Week, and it was refreshing to see, especially when fashion week street style is typically very showy.

    Paris’s fashion weeks, especially Couture Week, are typically fancier compared to some other cities’ fashion weeks, but I spotted quite a few simple, even casual, looks this time around. However, that didn’t make them any less luxurious. Among those low-key looks, I spotted several stand-out quiet luxury items repeated in photos from the week.     Runway collections aren’t always the easiest things to mimic on the cheap, and I’m just referring to ready-to-wear. Couture pieces are tenfold more difficult, with each garment, down to the littlest detail, being handmade and intentional. Never is this more apparent than at Schiaparelli’s shows, which, thanks to the brand’s creative director Daniel Roseberry and its founder Elsa Schiaparelli’s legacy, are famously extravagant and artistic. But for its fall/winter 2023/2024 couture show, which took place in Paris just days ago, one small aspect of the offering was an exception to the aforementioned belief, allowing me (and anyone with $6) the ability to get the Schiaparelli aesthetic immediately following the show. 

    The magic is in a stretchy, black headband, something that everyone knows you can buy on the cheap at a variety of venues, from Target to CVS to, in this case, H&M. At the Schiaparelli show, the simple hair accessories were worn close to the face, blocking any flyaways from even daring to surface, and styled with extravagant and inventive couture garments, from a black-and-white hooded minidress with a sculpture-like skirt to a delicate-lace gown fit with one of the most impressive corsets I’ve seen. Though these looks will be far more difficult to recreate IRL, they can serve as inspiration for the color palette and silhouettes that will make for the chicest headband-clad ensembles.

    As much as people like to say that fashion people only wear black, that hasn’t really been the case in recent years. Sure, the classic color has shown its face during fashion weeks across the globe, but not at the same rate that it once did, when it clearly dominated street style and runway collections alike. Instead, loud, maximalist shades have, in many ways, taken over, as have hyper minimal hues like ivory, soft gray, and white. Black, in turn, has become less ubiquitous in many ways.

    That all changed, though, in Paris this week during the Haute Couture shows, where the chicest members of the industry came to witness the unveiling of fashion’s most prestigious collections for fall 2023 from brands like Alaïa, Chanel, Schiaparelli, and Dior. There, black reigned supreme like it hasn’t in years, in the way of form-fitting dresses, ab-baring separates, sleek suiting, and more.
