    Costco Accused of Sharing Private Customer Data With Meta: Lawsuit | Entrepreneur

    Costco shoppers, beware: your personal information may have been compromised and shared with tech behemoth Meta, according to a new lawsuit.

    In documents filed in Seattle Federal Court, the class-action lawsuit alleges that Costco was using Meta Pixel on the healthcare area of its website without customers’ knowledge or consent.

    Meta Pixel is an analytical tool that allows a website to track visitor activity, and Meta would be able to see visitors’ personal and healthcare information submitted through the site.

    “By secretly recording and transmitting data to Meta — without the user’s knowledge or consent — Pixel acts much like a traditional wiretap,” the lawsuit states, per The Seattle Times. “Costco fails to disclose or omits the fact that it shares patient online activities and personal health information with Meta via Pixel.”

    The lawsuit says Costco tells patients and customers that its website uses a “secure platform,” but by using the tracking service, it is violating its own policy.

    Data potentially shared includes prescription information, patient location, health insurance coverage, immunization information, and more.

    Costco Pharmacy offers services such as prescription delivery and scheduling vaccines.

    The lawsuit alleges that Pixel’s data would help Costco and Meta “build profiles” around each patient and their behaviors and medical needs, which would eventually be used to maximize targeted marketing.

    Costco told The Seattle Times that it would not comment on pending litigation, though Meta condemned the notion it uses the data recorded through Pixel for marketing purposes.

    “Advertisers should not send sensitive information about people through our business tools,” Meta said Monday, as Costco is considered one of its advertisers. “Doing so is against our policies, and we educate advertisers on properly setting up business tools to prevent this from occurring.”

    Neither Costco nor Meta immediately responded to Entrepreneur’s request for comment.

    Costco is selling gold bars, and they’re selling out within hours

    Costco is known for selling daily necessities in big packages, from toilet paper to coffee. But now it’s edging into a category also viewed as essential by some investors and survivalists: gold.

    The discount retailer said this week it has started selling 1-ounce bars of gold, but that demand is so strong it can’t keep them in stock even with a limit of two bars per member. The company is selling two types of bars: a 1-ounce gold PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna Veriscan bar, which bears the imprint of a silhouette of the goddess of fortune with a cornucopia, and a 1-ounce bar from South Africa’s Rand Refinery, stamped with an elephant design. 

    Both bars are about half an inch long. The PAMP Suisse bar is registered and comes with a digital certificate that can be accessed with a QR code, while the Rand bars come with their own serial numbers.

    Gone in hours

    Because Costco’s e-commerce site lists the bars as unavailable as of Thursday morning, the price isn’t currently listed, although the PAMP bar is selling for about $1,980 while the Rand bar is sold for about $1,950, according to Yahoo Finance.

    “I’ve gotten a couple of calls that people have seen online that we’ve been selling one ounce gold bars,” said Costco Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti on an investor call this week. “Yes, but when we load them on the site, they’re typically gone within a few hours and we limit two per member.”

    Gold has long been viewed by investors as a hedge against inflation as well as a source of financial stability when stock and bond markets are volatile. Over the past five years, the price of gold has jumped 57%, compared with a 47% rise in the broad-based S&P 500 stock index during the same period. 

    The Costco bars are selling for slightly more than the spot price of gold, which stood at $1,875 an ounce on Thursday, according to financial data firm FactSet.

    Costco customers appear to be fans of the product, with some noting that the prices were lower than those available at other retailers. Other reviewers pointed out that buyers with Costco credit cards and executive memberships can get a combined 4% cash back on their gold purchase.

    “I was surprised that Costco was selling physical gold. I hope we can somehow find out when it becomes available again. It sold out very quickly!” one buyer wrote in a 5-star review. “Costco’s solid gold reputation made it an easy and secure purchase. I’m not sure i would trust just any dealer, tbh.”

    Available only through Costco’s website and exclusive to members, the gold bars come with insured, signed-for air shipping through UPS. However, according to the listings, they can’t be returned or refunded.

    Despite the hefty price tag, the gold is flying off the shelves, Costco’s CFO Richard Galanti said during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday. Galanti revealed that these bars are in high demand and rarely stay in stock for long.

    According to the personal finance platform GoBankingRates, the current estimated price of a one-ounce gold bar is $1,823.34.

    You may need to show photo identification on your next Costco trip, even if alcohol isn’t in your cart.

    The wholesale retailer has begun cracking down on the influx of membership sharing, particularly at Costco’s self-checkout lanes, by asking for customers’ membership cards along with photo ID. While Costco has always asked for membership cards at checkout, the request for additional identification is new, per The Dallas Morning News, which was the first to report the news.

    “We don’t feel it’s right that nonmembers receive the same benefits and pricing as our members,” a spokesperson for Costco told the outlet.

    The company says sharing membership cards threatens a key element of Costco’s business model: low prices.

    “Costco is able to keep our prices as low as possible because our membership fees help offset our operational expenses, making our membership fee and structure important to us,” the spokesperson added.

    Beyond the additional request for ID, Costco memberships are not changing.

    Costco Gold Star memberships cost $60 annually, and Executive memberships, which come with added rewards and perks, cost $120 — both memberships come with cards for two individuals with the same home address. Business memberships can add additional members to an account for $60 each.

    The retailer isn’t the first company to tighten restrictions on shared accounts. Last year, Netflix announced it would be cracking down on password sharing, citing the practice as detrimental to its bottom line. The new rule, which charges subscribers $7.99 a month for additional accounts shared outside of a user’s household, went into effect in May.

    It’s unclear how Costco’s crackdown will affect existing or future memberships, but just four days after Netflix’s new rule took hold, new subscribers rose by over 100,000.

    Ordering a custom cake for a special event can be a frightening feat when you’re hoping the design will come out as you have envisioned. And now, one man is learning the hard way that it doesn’t matter how much direction you give, the final product may not be what you asked for.

    Reddit user Stephen Walker posted a hilarious photo set that shows what happened when he tried to order a plain cake with red piping on the border from the popular membership chain Costco for his daughter’s birthday.

    In the post that’s been upvoted over 110,000 times, one photo of the cake order form shows that Walker selected a half-sheet, white cake with no design or writing. He told employees to flip the sheet over to see a diagram of what he wanted the final product to look like.

    On the back of the sheet, Walker drew a 3D diagram of a cake with red borders, noting that his only request for customization was red frosting along the perimeter of the top half of the cake and the bottom, not the sides.

    “No writing/no designs,” he wrote to clarify.

    When Walker received his cake, he was confused to find a plain white cake with his scribble diagram emblazoned on the top.

    “I picked it up Saturday morning and I was in a time crunch,” he told TODAY, noting that the cashier encouraged him to go tell the bakery to remedy the mistake. “We were in a hurry, so I was like, ‘Well, I’ll just scrape it off.’”

    Reddit users were in stitches over Walker’s misfortune.

    “This should be framed,” one wrote.

    “I laughed so hard I nearly woke up my baby,” another said.

    Others pointed out that perhaps the company included the drawing because Walker was asking for something that was not possible.

    “No. The cakes are already made. What [Walker] asked for could not have been done,” one claimed. “The customization option only has to do with what goes on the top of the cake, and the employee fulfilled the request the best they could within the realm of their power.”

    In the words of Walker himself, it looks like sometimes, “Costco will give you exactly what you know you didn’t need.”

    Costco has not yet commented on the incident nor responded to Entrepreneur‘s request for comment.

    Costco CFO Richard Galanti Implies Future Membership Fee Increase

    During a Thursday earnings call, Richard Galanti, the CFO of Costco, seemed to suggest that the wholesale retailer might raise its membership fees at some point in the near future. Galanti was responding to an analyst who asked if a weak economic outlook influenced Costco’s decision on the timing of a fee increase. Galanti said that economic considerations definitely played a role in the company’s “thought process” on the matter.

    In the past, Costco has increased its membership fees approximately every five years or so, with the most recent fee increase occurring in June 2017. It’s possible that the company will raise fees again in the future, but there is no official information on when this might happen.

    Here’s more from Fox Business:

    “What we’ve said again, and I’ll say again, is that our view is all the parameters, as it relates to member loyalty and value proposition that we’ve improved to our member, we have no problem thinking about doing it and doing it ultimately,” he said during the earnings call. “So it’s a question of when, not if.”

    Galanti went on to say that Costco management believes the company is “in a very strong competitive position right now” and “if we have to wait a few months or several months, that’s fine.”

    According to Insider, Galanti also said on the same earnings call that Costco is planning to open 24 stores this fiscal year in addition to moving three others.

    Wall Street gains on inflation data, but rocky on geopolitics, Walmart shares up over 6%

    Wall Street’s main indexes gained on Tuesday, shaking off an unconfirmed report of Russian missiles crossing into Poland that sparked volatility, as investors seized on softer-than-expected inflation data that raised hopes of a pullback in rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve.

    Equities were boosted by Tuesday’s inflation report that showed producer prices rising 8% in the 12 months through October against an estimated 8.3% rise.

    The gains built on a rally that was kicked off late last week by a cooler-than-expected report on consumer prices.

    “The market has been driven by the inflation number that came out a little bit lower than expected and confirmed last week’s number to some degree that we may have rounded the corner on inflation,” said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    The market was “a little bit more volatile this afternoon as news stories came out about the Russian missile landing in Poland,” Tuz said.

    The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 56.22 points, or 0.17%, to 33,592.92, the S&P 500 gained 34.48 points, or 0.87%, to 3,991.73 and the Nasdaq Composite added 162.19 points, or 1.45%, to 11,358.41.

    Two people were killed in an explosion in Przewodow, a village in eastern Poland near the border with Ukraine, firefighters said as NATO allies investigated reports that the blast resulted from Russian missiles.

    The Associated Press earlier cited a senior US intelligence official as saying the blast was due to Russian missiles crossing into Poland. But the Pentagon said it could not confirm that account.

    Stocks pulled back around mid-day after the report, with the Dow turning negative before they steadied.

    “The decline was triggered by reports of a Russian missile landing in Poland,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “This could develop into something far worse, but right now markets are nervous, not panicked.”

    Shares of Walmart Inc jumped 6.5% after the top US retailer lifted its annual sales and profit forecasts, benefiting from steady demand for groceries despite higher prices.

    Shares of other retailers, including Target Corp and Costco, also rose following Walmart’s report. Target, which is due to report on Wednesday, rose 3.9%, while Costco gained 3.3%.

    Home Depot shares rose 1.6% after the home improvement chain’s results showed it tapped higher prices to override a drop in customer transactions for the third quarter.

    Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 3.25-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.01-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

    The S&P 500 posted 5 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 85 new highs and 76 new lows.

    About 13.1 billion shares changed hands in US exchanges, compared with the 12.2 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.
