    The search will soon be on for a new chief executive officer of the Corpus Christi Housing Authority, according to officials.

    The board terminated the employment of Gary Allsup earlier this month. He had served as CEO for close to 14 years.

    While commissioners did not elaborate on what led to their decision when the votes were cast Sept. 15, several who had supported Allsup’s termination had expressed interest in a change of direction for the agency.

    The housing authority in the months preceding the vote had been at the crux of scrutiny for a combination of events, including questions about a controversial workforce housing program and concerns voiced over Allsup’s salary of about $528,000.

    The board on Sept. 24 authorized interim CEO Rhen Bass to go out for requests for proposals for a search firm, which will help lead the process of identifying potential candidates for a permanent CEO, board Commissioner Greg Smith told the Caller-Times.

    The winning firm will ultimately to be selected by commissioners, he added.

    The board also increased Bass’ annual salary of about $221,000 by $5,000 per month for the duration of time that he serves in the interim position, Smith said, and it approved a $600 car allowance.

    ROCKPORT, Texas – As Tropical Storm Beryl inches closer to the Texas Gulf Coast, many aren’t willing to roll the dice when it comes to what kind of wind and storm surge the tropical system will bring.

    In Corpus Christi, the forecast of Beryl has many RV campers cutting their holiday weekend short.

    “We’re getting out for sure,” said Manu Ardelean of San Antonio. “I get out bro, I get out. I’m that guy.”

    Ardelean, his friend and another family member are all hooking up their RVs and hitting the road to higher and drier ground.

    They’re among the many heading warnings of Tropical Storm Beryl strengthening into a hurricane before slamming into the Texas Gulf Coast.

    “No, I mean, at all. No,” said Ardelean. “We don’t want to try that. I have three small kids.”

    Meanwhile, just up the coast in Rockport, many homes can be seen boarded up with plywood and hurricane shutters.

    “We’re just boarding up before the big one comes,” Thano Drimalas said.

    He spent Saturday afternoon screwing pieces of plywood over his windows.

    Drimalas recalls what Hurricane Harvey did to Rockport back in 2017. It’s a memory fresh for many that call this part of the Texas coast home.

    “This place is still recovering from Harvey, is still a lot of slabs that are missing from Harvey still,” he said.

    CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – SATURDAY, JULY 6 – 7:45 A.M. CT – As many continue to celebrate the 4th of July holiday weekend, millions across the Texas Gulf Coast are preparing for what is forecast to become Hurricane Beryl again.

    Overnight, the National Weather Service issued a few updated advisories, including new information at 7 a.m.

    There is some good news for the Houston area.

    It seems that the forecast tracks of Beryl have settled in (at least for now). We’ve seen this before, but have also noted consistent eastward tracks of Beryl.

    However, for the better part of the overnight hours models have agreed upon a Texas landfall somewhere between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay.

    Of course, this is always subject to chance. But at least it’s a little bit of a good sign for the Houston area.

    Saturday is the day to make those preparations ahead of what should be a windy and rainy start to the week.

    Those along the coast will see the brunt of the impacts.

    Wondering if you should start your prep work? Here’s my go-to advice: Preapre for the worst and hope for the best.

    The latest guidance from the National Hurricane Center shows yet another eastward jog of what will likely become Hurricane Beryl once again.

    Simply put – this increases the probability of hurricane impacts to the Houston area.

    The Hurricane Watch has been extended through portions of Brazoria County.

    Meanwhile, the Storm Surge Watch has been extended through High Island in Galveston County.

    Now is the time to prepare.

    Voluntary evacuations are already underway in Matagorda County.

    6 die in 3-vehicle crash on Texas highway, authorities say

    GEORGE WEST, Texas — A minivan trying to overtake a vehicle in a no-passing zone on a Texas highway crashed head-on into an SUV, which was then rear-ended by another vehicle, authorities said. Six people died and five others were injured.

    The crash happened around 6:20 p.m. Friday near George West, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Corpus Christi, said Sgt. Guadalupe Casarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

    “It was a pretty drastic scene,” Casarez said.

    The crash remained under investigation Monday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. But the department said in a news release that a minivan traveling south on U.S. Highway 59 tried to pass in a no-passing zone and crashed head-on into the northbound SUV. A sedan then slammed into the back of the SUV.

    The vehicle that was being passed was not hit in the crash, Casarez said.

    The driver of the minivan, Xochitl Veronica Lopez, 39, of Houston, died at the scene, along with a juvenile passenger in the minivan, the department said.

    The driver of the SUV, Salvador Almeda Mendoza, 47, of Ganado, Texas, was also killed, along with two passengers, Ilda Briones Nieves, 58, and Honorio Lazo Navarro, 74, both of Ganado.

    The sixth person killed was a passenger in the sedan whose name has not been released.

    Five other people were taken to a hospital with “non-incapacitating injuries,” the public safety department said.

    Authorities so far don’t believe that alcohol was a factor, Casarez said.
