    I didn’t realize how tightly my platinum-blonde hair was wound into my sense of identity until, suddenly, I couldn’t be a blonde anymore.

    Up until a few months ago, I had been some iteration of blonde my entire life. As my naturally blonde hair darkened (around high school), I started putting more and more effort into gaming the system and making it lighter. I was fighting nature, vacillating between phases of highlights and bleach and tones, and honestly, I’m still surprised to this day that I was left with any hair on my head. (Ahem, bleach really does a number on your strands and your scalp.)

    Alas, after years of good behavior and somehow maintaining long, thick, practically damage-free hair despite my lightening habit, my luck ran out and my hair finally threw in the towel. It was like suddenly, my head threw one huge tantrum to make up for the years of abuse I had put it through. I’d break out into full-body hives the second the bleach would touch my scalp at the salon, and while I scraped through for about a year with lots (and lots) of Benadryl pre-appointment, it was a Band-Aid solution. Sure, it kept the burning outbreak of hives at bay but not the actual damage my hair and scalp were enduring. As my wonderful colorist, Cassondra Kaeding, explained to me, there’s almost always an expiration date for bleaching. It had been a nice run, but it was now time for it to end. Except, I wasn’t ready.

    I couldn’t imagine a world where I would feel anywhere like myself and not be blonde. I think I also had a weird subconscious fixation that maybe my bright-blonde hair—usually the first thing I was ever complimented on—was the single thing that made me attractive or desirable. (Problematic, I know, but as someone who has a history of body dysmorphia, not all too surprising.) As backward as it may sound, I felt like my blonde hair was my superpower. Ask any human, and they probably have some singular trait—be it physical or personality-wise—that they feel equally dependent on. 

    We experimented with darker shades of blonde, but for some reason, that was almost harder on me than if I had done a 360 and dyed my hair an entirely different color. If I couldn’t be bright platinum blonde, then I didn’t want to be blonde at all. And if I was going to try something new, I wanted it to be entirely unexpected.

    It took a while—and over 1000 runway images—to finally wrap our heads around the contents of fashion month.     Tory Burch, Miuccia Prada for Prada and Miu Miu, Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, and Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta all seemed to grasp what so many have tried and failed to in the past—that is, what women actually wear. In a relatable move, Prada sent models down the runway at Miu Miu looking intentionally frazzled, having remembered to wear stockings and outerwear but forgotten pants and a hairbrush.

    Elsewhere, Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent collection displayed a contrasting glimpse of the female form, one that’s strict in its put-togetherness, utilizing intensely strong tailoring and powerful silhouettes to get his message across. Finally, at Loewe, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander, our desire for comfort played out in the form of furry footwear, fashionable security blankets, and apparel fitted with oversize hoods.

    This earthy and slighty fruity scent is rife with juicy notes like patchouli, blackberry, and clove stem. It may not be for everyone since it is a bit of a sweeter woody perfume, but if you’re like me and have been looking for a scent that offers both lighter, fruitier notes and deeper woody notes, this is it and brings the best of both worlds.

    I’ve always been a city girl. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, grew up in Houston, and upon moving to L.A., lived comfortably east of the 405 for years. Every time I catch another glorious pink sunset, it does feel a little like living in a fantasy.

    If you’ve ever experienced L.A. traffic, you know how vast and sprawling the city is. Different zip codes mean different dress codes, and the attitude in Venice is very relaxed. Denim and comfy shoes reign supreme, and a knit is a must to combat the almost-always-present marine layer. Most of my bolder pieces have been relegated to the back of my closet, awaiting invites for martinis at Tower Bar, dancing at A Club Called Rhonda, and too much pasta at Little Dom’s. So while my highlights may not be low-maintenance, my approach to daily dressing is.

    Myths can be a big part of a beauty brand’s DNA. Some of the most iconic beauty products are linked to an epic origin story. Take Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Lip & Cheek Stain, initially made as a nipple tint for exotic dancers, or how La Mer was invented after its founder suffered burns in a lab accident. (He also consulted astrology and played a specific soundtrack for each batch.) Then there’s Chanel’s Vamp, aka Rouge Noir, a whole other ballgame. The dark, blood-red, almost-black shade was everything in the mid-90s and hard to come by as it was constantly selling out. (Thankfully, there were tons of dupes for teens like me who didn’t have a Chanel-friendly budget.) Almost 30 years later, Vamp remains one of Chanel’s best-selling nail polish shades. 

    Vamp first debuted in March 1994 at Chanel’s Fall 1994 ready-to-wear show in Paris (an iconic collection that featured gold-chain, cell phone, and water bottle holders, which would later inspire Mona May’s costume design in Clueless). Vamp’s legacy includes a Chanel makeup artist coloring over a red nail with a Sharpie; another has Uma Thurman wearing the shade in Pulp Fiction. Though, neither seems to be true. 

    Two days before the Chanel show, the company’s director of the house’s makeup-creation studio, Heidi Morawetz, and Dominique Moncourtois, the international director of makeup creation, mixed red and black pigments in Chanel’s studio kitchen until they came up with the color. Morawetz told Interview magazine in 2011 that she was inspired by how eyes and nails look black in black-and-white photos. When editors peeped at the models’ gothic nails, it became an instant hit. “The journalists saw it in the show, and they thought it was incredible, “What’s this color?” The Americans did it right away because they could just put it on the counter. So it came out in America before it did here in Paris,” recalled Morawetz.

    I’m almost always on the hunt for a good pair of jeans. If you were to look at my computer right now, you’d see nearly all my shopping tabs open to a product page for a pair of jeans.     When the end of the year rolls around, it’s always a time for reflection.     Turns out, it was the lobster! The protein was discovered by the brand’s founders, Amber Boutiette and Patrick Breeding, who are biomedical engineers. Breeding had discovered that the properties in lobster glycoproteins are naturally reparative. It’s what allows the crustaceans to heal wounds, fight off disease, and regenerate limbs. When applied to human skin issues, it can help with dry, aggravated skin. This was amazing news for Boutiette, as she suffers from eczema. 

    They launched the brand with sustainability in mind. The glycoproteins are a natural by-product of processing that usually ends up going right down the drain, so they partnered with local B-Corp lobster processor Luke’s Lobster to collect the fluid and purify it in-house. This process allows them to only collect the by-products of already-existing lobster processing and turn what once was wasted into a barrier-repairing skincare ingredient. 

    “It’s been incredible to see these glycoproteins from lobsters helping others in the same way they helped me,” Boutiette tells Who What Wear. “My eczema was really bad not only around my eyes and face but also on and around my lips, so I knew from experience that there weren’t products that addressed this painful problem. There was a serious need for lip products designed to be safe and effective for this delicate area that everyone can use. We knew we had to introduce a lip treatment.”
