    One of the best things about the awards season is that there’s always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project could secure every single award or drama that ensues backstage (or sometimes onstage). But for Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or what red carpet-looks will go viral. Sadly, though, in recent years, we’ve been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to awards show style that, well, surprises. 

    Don’t get us wrong, we will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there’s something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you’re dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes! It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they’ll land on the “best dressed” list that they forget to enjoy the getting dressed up part. However, that wasn’t the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. While one might argue she wasn’t necessarily “fully dressed” (wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown), nonetheless, her presence was a welcome shift from the sea of cliché gowns. 

    Many did not know Jenner would be in the audience at the Golden Globes since she did not walk the red carpet. However, she was there during the ceremony to support her beau, Timothée Chalamet, which quickly captured the attention of the internet. Although most of the buzz did surround the on-screen kiss they shared, we were more enthralled with their looks for the evening. Frankly, you won’t blame us once you see them for yourselves!     I’m from a small town in Northern Michigan, but up until this year, I spent four years living in LA and two years living in Austin, Texas. Not to state the obvious, but the climates of those three locations are drastically different. In LA, I had balmy 70-degree days. In Austin, I had high heat and high humidity to contend with. Now, I’m dealing with below-freezing temperatures and lots of snow, wind, and ice. Like I said, it’s different. 

    Even though I grew up here, it wasn’t exactly easy to readjust to the climate. In fact, I dreaded it. Dark, cold days do a number on my mental and physical health—not to mention my skin and hair. For the former, I had to rework my daily routine, get fresh air, and engage in lots of self-care activities. For the latter, I had to rework my beauty routine, collect new products, and use them strategically. It took me a while, but I’m happy to announce that I have my cold-weather essentials on lock.     We should start our argument by stating that satin coats have been around for a long time. Although not as seemingly a massive outerwear trend at the time, we did see satin coats surface on the runways earlier last year. One might recall when models donned pastel satin coats that were as slick as ice in 16Arlington’s S/S 23 show. Or perhaps how, in Givenchy’s F/W 23 show, double-breasted coats were reworked and fashioned from high-shine (but dark) satin textiles. While each collection was stunning, no doubt, their subsequent impacts on the cultural fabric were not something that registered at first—at least, until the release of S/S 24 collections.

    One could argue that these two collections set the blueprint for what was to come, as across spring shows, we saw every type of satin outerwear imaginable: trench coats, posh puffers, oversized blazers, and so on. Although each collection’s approach was, arguably, different, the throughline was that satin was the fabric of choice in making those more “simple” silhouettes shine again. It’s a trend that feels indicative of the larger influence that the “quiet luxury” movement had on shifting our collective relationship with clothing. With so much of the focus on items that lend themselves to being a part of a capsule wardrobe, there has been a vacuum for pieces that could find that fine balance between appealing to minimalists and maximalists—satin coats manage to fill that space.

    In an effort to prove that point, we’ve taken the liberty of rounding up looks from the runway and real life that display the versatility of satin coats. Plus, we’ve shopped out the best satin jackets from high-street and affordable fashion brands for good measure.     We’re no more than mere days into 2024, and already, the year’s first footwear phenomenon has taken hold, commanding over Instagram and single-handedly ushering in a very chic but slightly uncomfortable 366 days. Its name is Lee. Crafted by Saint Laurent’s creative director since 2016, Anthony Vaccarello, the Lee is a 4.25-inch geometric stiletto with a heel that’s varnished in the same color of the exaggerated buckle that fastens its patent-leather slingback straps to the rest of the shoes. Some variations are available with a black heel if too much gold isn’t your thing. Available in six colorways, the style made its debut at the French house’s fall/winter 2023 show alongside ’80s-inspired corporate ensembles fit for the office siren, and now that its shoppable, fashion’s elite, including Laura Harrier and Hailey Bieber, can’t seem to get enough. 

    Scrolling through my Instagram feed over the last few days, I’ve noticed the vampy stilettos on a near-constant basis, often styled alongside other pieces from the fall collection, including pencil skirts, sheer and low-cut tank tops, and shoulder-padded oversize blazers. Hosiery is a must with these, and extra-sheer tights are the primary pick for most of the wearers I’ve seen. According to Vogue, the goal of Vaccarello’s collection was to hit on the concept of elegance and “being dressed.” There was a time not long ago when putting on a pencil skirt, stockings, and heels this sky-high would’ve sent a shutter down most of our spines. That’s no longer the case, though, and 2024’s early obsession with the Lee silhouette is further proof that comfort is no longer king. This year, a “look at me” outfit will reign supreme over one that satisfies your sense of touch and feel. I love my trusty Uggs, too, but they just don’t show off like the Lees will.

    It’s 2024, and although it may seem like we’ve hit the peak of celebrity brands—they just keep coming. Every time you think, “This is enough,” a few more press releases make their way into the world. To a certain extent, each celebrity brand banks on hype and name recognition to secure initial buzz. But when you have standout successes like Rare Beauty and Skims, which have brought out trustworthy products regardless of the name attached, it makes sense for others to throw their cards on the table. And while others may write them off completely, I can’t help but be extremely nosy, or in better words, curious. If I had judged Skims off the bat, I never would have found the only bra I have ever bought in six different colors. 

    After chatting with fellow editors and taking an in-depth scroll through the product reviews of TikTok, I embarked on the journey to spend my entire winter break testing out as many celebrity brands as I could get my hands on. Once I got past a few trial runs and settled into a routine, it was evident which products would be finding a place in my everyday life. Now, I can’t help but reach for Lemme’s sleep gummies when I’m in dire need of a full night’s rest and Being Frenshie’s body spray stays in my purse at all times.     Before you panic, let me preface this by saying that dimethicone isn’t an unsafe or “bad” ingredient, but it could be doing your curls more harm than good. After doing a little of my own research, I discovered that regular use of dimethicone can result in dry and brittle strands over time due to the nature of the ingredient. Dimethicone is a popular silicone used in both skincare and haircare products that creates a barrier and seals in moisture. However, it’s not water-soluble, so it doesn’t rinse out of your hair with just water, a gentle co-wash, or shampoo. 

    This is the issue when it comes to curls. While there are pros to using dimethicone in your routine—like smoother strands, reduced frizz, and heat protection—it can prevent the absorption of water, ultimately drying out the hair in the long run since curls need water to activate and create definition. This isn’t to say that this will happen to every single person with curls, but I can say with confidence that this was my issue. It may be yours, too, if you find that your shampoo and conditioner dried out your hair the longer you used it.

    I do occasionally still use a hair serum or two with a small amount of dimethicone in it, but I check the ingredient list before putting anything on my hair now. I also make sure to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to help remove any buildup. My hair took a turn for the better once I stopped using products with large amounts of dimethicone. It’s healthier, more hydrated, and less tangled than it was previously.     Everyone’s hair is different, so if your routine is working for you and contains dimethicone, no need to make changes! This was just my PSA for anyone else struggling with curls that are dry AF who can’t figure out what the potential cause could be.

    Unless you’ve been off the grid, chances are you’re no stranger to the rise of the no-pants fashion trend, which first arose in 2022. At the time, it might have seemed like it would be a fleeting trend, but the in crowd quickly took to cementing it as a signature part of the going-out arsenal. It girls like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Bella Hadid have worn their “panties out” on the regular. With every season since this trend’s debut, we’ve seen it subtly evolve. Spring/summer 2024 collections were not immune to this pattern. Unlike previous versions of this trend, which focused solely on the shock factor of exposed panties, we saw designers take a more modest approach to the look by experimenting with tailoring, layering, and textiles. For the latter, hot pants came in materials that didn’t necessarily feel lingerie adjacent. For example, Miu Miu’s F/W 23 collection had briefs made from wool. In contrast, ACNE Studios’ S/S 23 collection featured leather-made ones. 

    If textiles weren’t how designers aimed to make the exposed-panties trend more polished, they did so through layering. From Nensi Dojaka to LaQuan Smith to Alaïa, we could see exposed bodysuits, thongs, and briefs peaking out underneath sheer skirts, gowns, and catsuits, adding just the right amount of coverage. However, the greatest way in which designers managed to make this risqué trend more wearable was by using tailoring to create the illusion of exposed underpinnings without actually having them all out there. Just reference Henne’s collection, in which a low-slung draped skirt perfectly emphasizes the V-cut of a bodysuit, or the overlay thong detail in the jaw-dropping gold runway look from Diesel’s S/S 24 collection. They’re proof that pulling off the whole “panties out” look is very possible and worth celebrating.

    When defining the balletcore look, there are a few things to remember. The first is that a major part of the overall aesthetic is about tapping into things that are “pretty” or traditionally “feminine,” which manifests through the color palette, textiles, and silhouettes chosen. Typically, you’ll see ballerinas or anybody aspiring towards this look donning a muted pastel color palette of pale pink, light lilac, baby blue, and sage green, with pops of neutrals, including white, black, gray, and shades of nude. Occasionally, a brighter color will be thrown into the mix, like saffron red, but overall, most of the color palette is demure.

    In terms of the textiles, you’ll see a mix of materials that will either be “performance-ready” or “off-duty casual.” For example, while ballerinas are on stage, they typically wear textiles made from tulle or chiffon (the material that makes the iconic tutu) embellished with crystals, ruffles, or any other form of appliqués. While off-stage, you’ll typically find that ballerinas are all about comfort, which is reflected through the adoption of more breathable materials that are easy to dance in, like jersey, cotton, and cashmere. 

    The same can be said for silhouettes, as the dancer’s schedules often inform them. Traditionally, you’d find a ballerina’s onstage look silhouette to be a dress with a form-fitting bodice and voluminous skirt. But designers have expanded that silhouette to include bubble hems, drop-waists, puff sleeves, and even looser-fitting ruffled frocks. In terms of off-duty silhouettes, you’ll see more of the traditional workout gear in the form of leotards, tights or leggings, and boleros. Overall, these are the things that have informed what we now consider “balletcore.” But ultimately, the key to nailing this fashion aesthetic is all about finding clothing that feels like it could be worn by ballerinas on the dance floor but incorporated into daily life effortlessly.
