  • Eclectic Grandpa Is the Controversial Trend That's Already Defining 2024

Eclectic Grandpa Is the Controversial Trend That's Already Defining 2024

    [ad_1]

For those not chronically online, terms like “coquette,” “coastal grandma,” and “quiet luxury” may leave you a bit puzzled. For those whose screen time runs higher than you’d like, you might have already conjured up an image in your head for each packaged-up style interest. Quiet luxury will have you envisioning the whispered effortlessness of The Row and anything worn by Logan Roy in Succession. Coquette will transport you into Sandy Liang’s world filled with bows, ruffles, and the innate feeling of healing one’s inner child. And 2024’s first buzzy aesthetic, “eclectic grandpa,” coined by Pinterest, which predicted the trend to grow in virality this year (it cited an increase in searches for the terms “grandpa core” and “grandpa style” in December), is composed of kitschy knitwear, loafers, baseball caps, wristwatches, and anything retro or vintage adjacent. With this in mind, my mind immediately jumps to anything designed by Emily Bode, the street style of Princess Diana, and the top contenders of  GQ’s best-dressed list—particularly Pedro Pascal.

While this style can technically be achieved with a purchase of a few pieces, a part of the conversation surrounding this new trend is heading in a different direction: The look is meant to encapsulate the personal style of an actual grandpa, though people are starting to realize that they only look that stylish because they have collected high-quality, special, and well-loved pieces over time, which isn’t something you can exactly curate overnight.

It’s created a new conversation on how Gen Z is viewing their style. Some might consider aesthetics to be the antithesis of personal style (I think experimentation is key), but this one’s proving to the next-gen (me included) that patience is a virtue. While I may not be copying the grandpa ‘fits I see on my Pinterest feed to a T, it’s certainly been shifting the way I shop and dress. Since I, too, want to be a grandparent one day with a closet filled with special and long-lasting pieces, I’ve been having more fun with the way I dress and putting a lot more thought into what I purchase and how they’ll fit into my wardrobe—current and future.

Even if you’re not embodying the exact outfits of celebrities like Gigi Hadid or Tyler the Creator, their style presence among the aesthetic will still inevitably make an impact on the trend cycle. Pinterest expects an uptick in demand for sweater-vests, loafers, and “grandpa knits”—items all worn by the style stars mentioned above. If you want to be inspired by the eclectic styling off and on the runway or want to incorporate a piece or two from the grandpa look into your wardrobe, simply keep scrolling.

6 Outdated Trends We've Left in 2023 and Their 2024 Replacements

    [ad_1]

One of the first things I’m letting go of in 2024 is chasing “trends” that I’m not even that excited about. Throughout the years with my job as an editor, I see them come and go quicker than lightning and have been often caught looking at a drawer filled with new things I don’t even truly want to wear. While there are still quite a few trends that pique my interest, like the resurgence of leopard print at the moment, I’m not chasing trends just to catch attention. My priority is timeless items.

My co-workers are on the exact same page, so I pulled a few of them aside to find out the question on everyone’s minds: What 2023 trends are you getting rid of? Their answers revealed quite a lot. Below, find out what six Who What Wear editors had to say.

Fashion People in Paris Are Throwing Out This Antiquated Style Rule in 2024

    [ad_1]

If there’s one thing I learned about my time in Paris over the holiday season, it’s that French people don’t wear all black nearly as much as New Yorkers. After sitting at cafés people-watching and trend-spotting for hours, I’d go out to stay that the stylish Paris street crowd is saying au revoir to basic and monochromatic outfits in 2024.

While I spotted a fair share of elevated basics and classic styles in brown, black, nude, and cream, the Paris street style crowd that stole my heart the most while in the French fashion capital were those who were unafraid to experiment with color. Whether it was full-on statement coats in bright hues or blink-and-you-miss-it accessories to add a touch of playfulness, French women everywhere are throwing the notion that all-black outfits are the only way to look chic this winter.

Below, browse some style inspiration on how to incorporate color into your winter outfits the cool French-girl way and shop their key staples.

28 Chic Items That'll Make Your Home Look Expensive

I would describe myself as someone who would rather spend money on a pair of shoes than a decorative bowl, no matter how beautiful it may be. That said, I still want my home to look chic and elevated. To add another layer, I’m picky when it comes to home décor, as it’s not something I switch out nearly as often as, say, my shoes.

Last year, I traveled more than I have ever before, and I’m trying to manifest that same energy for 2024. I love to travel and find going to new places so exciting. You get to experience what it would be like if you chose to live in a different city for a while, you get to leave your problems at home, and you get to wear all of your favorite wardrobe pieces you’ve been saving for a great vacation. I mean, what’s not to love? The key to great trips, however, is planning well and packing strategically. You want to make sure you’re bringing the right things and are thinking about what you will actually need and use on your trip, not what you might have a last-minute urge to wear.

With all of the traveling I’ve done, I have gotten pretty good at packing smart, but that’s not without help from some travel essentials from Nordstrom and Amazon that I swear by. Since I want to make sure your travels go as smoothly as possible you save yourself from overpacking unnecessary items, I’ve rounded up the travel essentials that have changed the game for me.

  • Welcome to the Toryssance: The It Shoes Every Fashion Person is Clamoring For

Welcome to the Toryssance: The It Shoes Every Fashion Person is Clamoring For

    [ad_1]

In its report on Q3 2023, Lyst not only named Tory Burch as a rising brand to watch with a 15% spike in searches for the quarter, but also narrowed in on the one item largely responsible for all the newfound hype: its pierced mules, which made the top-10 list of the hottest products, alongside heavy-hitters like Miu Miu and Loewe. For those uninitiated in the language of “new Tory”, the mules are part of a series of shoes that all have the same notorious hardware which gives off the illusion that the shoe is pierced with a segment ring near the toe.

The first of these pierced shoes came in the form of slingback flats and flat mules and they debuted on the spring/summer 2023 runway, the collection that’s widely regarded as marking the beginning of Burch’s new aesthetic. Since then, a pair of slingback pumps have joined the ranks and the latest update is anticipated in the spring 2024 lineup to be launching in the coming months. Already, fashion insiders are clamoring to get their hands on a pair—at least two Who What Wear editors already have—and making what’s left of the first pairs nearly sell out.

With the forthcoming 2024 iterations, it seems like the perfect time to highlight the It style because it’s clearly only growing in interest and attention. Ahead, we’ve charted the course of the Tory Burch pierced shoes from their runway debuts to the current-season market. Discover fashion’s most-wanted footwear of the moment, and then shop the pairs that are magically still available (for now, that is).

My Mom Is 60, and I'm 28—These Nordstrom Items Are on Our 2024 Wish Lists

My mom and I are multiple states and 32 years apart; she’s 4’11”, and I’m 5′ 8″; and if you looked at the outfits we individually put together, you’d be hard-pressed to find similarities. Yet whenever we shop at Nordstrom together—something we’ve been doing since I was a toddler tagging along on a mall trip from the comfort of my stroller—we tend to take a liking to the same things. It’s like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants phenomenon, but with a mother and daughter, and instead of one pair of pants, it’s a heap of chic buys from Nordstrom

When I was home during the holidays, we shopped the Half-Yearly Sale to no end together, both ordering a few of the same items. Afterward, we started planning ahead for 2024 in the retailer’s new-arrivals section. As usual, our picks weren’t very far off from each other’s. Below, take a look at the 37 items my 60-year-old mom and I are both looking to add to our 2024 wardrobe rotations, from cashmere knits and elevated denim to suede accessories and LBDs.

I Just Realized Every Beauty Item I Told My Friends to Buy in 2023 Was Under $50

    [ad_1]

As a beauty editor, I’m lucky enough to test dozens of new skincare, hair, and makeup products each month. I’m constantly surrounded by them, and it’s literally my job to judge them, so I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what’s good, what’s great, and what’s, well, not worth using. It’s only when I personally recommend a product to my friends that I know I really love it.

Two of my closest friends (hi, Ella and Hansi!) love swapping beauty news, info, and recommendations. I can’t even count how many times they’ve gracefully listened to my never-ending monologues on the subject. So when they came to visit over the summer, I naturally told them all about the products I’d been loving as of late, and they did the same. A week later, they left with a list of products to buy (and it’s only grown since). It wasn’t until recently that I realized every product on the list was $50 or less. Ahead, see all 15 products that I’ve recommended to them and learn why I love them so much.

  • I Started My Day Like Akilah Releford Gould for a Week: 5 Habits I'm Keeping

I Started My Day Like Akilah Releford Gould for a Week: 5 Habits I'm Keeping

    [ad_1]

    The Routine:

Gould’s mornings start bright and early with wake-up times falling anywhere between 5:45 and 6:00 a.m. Before launching herself into a busy workday, she does a gratitude practice, something that I admittedly don’t do often enough. This includes journaling, meditating, and just “waking up and saying thank you” before she moves through the rest of her day. I’m not sure if she’s a natural early riser or if it’s been learned through trial and error, but I admire her dedication to taking calm moments for herself. She’s found a way to strike the delicate balance between wellness and her multifaceted career as a cosmetic founder, content creator, and creative director.

    The Result:

I’ve wanted to discover solace in the silence, but I haven’t always had the tools or drive to pull it off. It turns out that starting a workday with gratitude can foster an extra helping of positivity to carry me through the day. I finally broke open the lined journal and daily planner I’ve been keeping on my bedside table for a rainy day and spent the first few minutes after my morning alarm writing down five things I’m grateful for, setting my intentions, and taking note of what I hope to accomplish. This was followed by whichever guided morning meditation I stumbled upon on Spotify that led me through deep breathing exercises, affirmations, and stillness.

While rising at the break of dawn isn’t something I would normally be drawn to, I was amazed at how much more time I had to myself in my mornings before switching on my “productivity autopilot,” the driving force behind my work mindset. The controlled chaos of beauty editor Maya didn’t exist until meditative Maya had a chance to set the tone for the rest of the day. Since following Gould’s morning rituals for a week, I’ve found myself wanting to wake up earlier to get as much “me” time in my day as possible. My mornings may not always start while it’s still dark outside, but I love being more of a morning person as opposed to my night-owl tendencies—consider me sold.

8 Chic Outfit Ideas For When It's Too Cold For Anything But a Puffer

    [ad_1]

We’ve reached the time of year when the main outfit priority is to stay warm. Take it from me—I just returned from a very snowy trip in which my teeth chattered every time I stepped outside. As we all know, when dealing with below-freezing temperatures, the best item of clothing to wear to stay warm is a puffer jacket. They may not be as trendy as they were a few years ago, but the good news is that they’re a wardrobe staple that every closet needs.

Given the, well, puffy nature of a puffer, avoiding looking like the Michelin Man while wearing one is easier said than done. But it’s a challenge I’m always eager to take each winter. I took some time scrolling through all of the recent wintery photos in my Instagram feed, and selected a few that check all of the boxes: chic, warm, and comfortable. Read on to shop what you need to make them happen during the coldest season of the year.

  • If You Like Baby-Soft Skin, This Organic Bodycare Line Is a Must

If You Like Baby-Soft Skin, This Organic Bodycare Line Is a Must

    [ad_1]

There are a lot of organic bodycare brands out there, but it’s a bit rarer now that I find one that’s really worth shouting about. While I’m a huge advocate for higher standards when it comes to my skincare ingredients, some organic lines fall into the trap of being underwhelming or not working very well. Esker products, however, don’t fit this bill.

Featuring a range of high-quality organic bodywashes, oils, and body tools, Esker utilizes a CO2 extraction method that gives these formulas a unique edge. The brand’s founder, Shannon Davenport, broke it down for me.

“I was initially drawn to CO2 extraction because it made a superstar skincare ingredient more appealing,” she says. “Carrot seed oil (daucus carota) is a superb ingredient loaded with naturally occurring antioxidants, but in its traditional steam-distilled or cold-pressed format (as an essential oil) it has kind of a funky smell that is extra musky, almost bordering on kind of a barnyard scent. It’s not a bad scent per se, but not one with mass appeal.

“However, when the ingredient is CO2 extracted, it smells totally different! Earthier, lighter, and almost with a touch of a smokey mesquite aroma. I am obsessed with the scent and then subsequently learned how potent and clean CO2-extracted ingredients are. Our carrot seed process is done by basically putting organic carrot seed root into a sealed chamber and using pressure to allow carbon dioxide to pass through the plant matter leaving the aromatics and/or fatty oil content behind.”

This unique process gives each product an extra aromatic scent and I’m obsessed. Read on for my thoughts on a few favorites from the brand.

I had the privilege of sampling several Esker bodywash formulas, and this one was definitely a favorite. The problem I have with a lot of organic bodywashes is that they don’t lather enough and you have to use a ton to feel clean. Not the case here! This formula has a really nice lather and the scent is incredible. It’s earthy, uplifting, and leaves you with the softest skin. My only wish is that it came larger since I go through it a bit quickly.

My other favorite bodywash I tried from the brand was the clarifying formula. If you’re prone to body breakouts, give this one a go! It offers the same nourishing and softening qualities as any Esker bodywash, but vitamin E and cypress oil in this one help reduce skin inflammation and hydrate without clogging pores.

Honestly, every body oil from the brand is so good. I love that they all feature high-quality organic oils that are noncomedogenic. If your skin isn’t too sensitive to essential oils, then you may even be able to use them on your face! The firming formula is designed to help reduce the appearance of cellulite and tighten the skin. I can’t exactly say that this one product alone tightened my skin since I also use a body retinol, but I will say that the combination of the two keeps my skin feeling soft and looking healthy. Grapefruit and lavender essential oil really stand out in this smell-wise and I always feel like I’ve just gone to the spa after applying it.

For those with sensitive skin who can’t use essential oils, this one’s for you! This ended up being my favorite body oil of the bunch because it provides the most long-lasting hydration. It’s scent-free and contains ingredients like prickly pear seed which has powerful antioxidants, squalane, evening primrose, fractionated coconut oil, and avocado fruit oil. The formula overall is high in vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids that keep skin soft and nourished. I use this one after a shower in the evening and wake up with the softest skin of my life. It’s a perfect winter hydration staple.

This oil is the pair to the brand’s Restorative Body Wash. Carrot seed extract is the foundational ingredient in this formula that’s loaded with antioxidants to reduce the appearance of aging skin. Jojoba oil also makes up the formula which is rich in natural ceramides that help repair the skin’s barrier.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: $52 is way too much for a hand wash, but trust me, once you try this one, you’ll be hooked. While staying at the Conrad Hotel in Los Angeles once, the hotel’s spa director told me it’s all she uses because it keeps your hands so soft and it smells so good. I, of course, went home and tried it myself. She wasn’t lying. It contains a blend of essential oils that gently and thoroughly cleanse your hands without over drying. They also have natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, keeping your hands extra clean. Trust me, this one is worth it. I’m spoiled now and probably won’t be able to use any other hand soap.

The last thing that made my list of top Esker products was the brand’s body planing tool. I wasn’t familiar with body planing until receiving a treatment with this tool. It’s great to have at home to remove any build up on your skin and promotes lympathic drainage without being overly abrasive.

As far as drugstore body lotions go, this is a favorite. It’s designed for extra dry skin so it’s great to reach for in the winter.

Rare Beauty’s newly launched hydrating body lotion contains barrier-supporting niacinamide, ashwaganda extract, and hyaluronic acid. I haven’t gotten my hands on this one quite yet, but I can’t wait to do so.

This is my all time favorite body lotion. It’s hydrating and rich in collagen-supporting ingredients, but is never too thick or greasy. Osea products also always smell amazing—there’s no artificial fragrance, they just smell naturally earthy and wonderful.

This luze vitamin C-rich body oil is a new find for me but it’s incredible. It has ceramides, New Zealand botanicals, and biotech lipids that keep your skin next-level nourished.
