25 Years Later, This Is Still Copenhagen’s Most Influential Fashion Brand

Copenhagen Fashion Week is always an exciting time of year, but this season is extra special for one of the event’s stalwarts: Baum und Pferdgarten, which is celebrating its milestone 25th anniversary. To revisit the last two and a half decades and find out what’s coming next, I went straight to the source and interviewed Creative Directors Helle Hestehave and Rikke Baumgarten.

“We started in Helle’s bedroom, and lucky for us, we have since moved on,” Baumgarten told Who What Wear. “When we started the company, everything was still very manual. No Instagram or TikTok, only fax and phone. We did [it] all by hand opposite today, where patterns and prints are made digitally. The industry has changed radically and moves so much faster with so many strong brands. Today, having a strong brand DNA is equally as important as having strong collections.” Scroll down to read my full interview with the design duo.

  • I Just Came Back From Copenhagen— This is the Sneaker Trend I Spotted Everywhere

I Just Came Back From Copenhagen— This is the Sneaker Trend I Spotted Everywhere

It’s no surprise that the stylish, colorful Scandi crowd has a few sartorial rules they live by. Number one: an outfit is (nearly always) boring if you’re wearing all-black. Number two: flat shoes are an essential if you’re walking or biking anywhere in the city.

After spending almost a week in Copenhagen earlier this fall and winter, I’ve got to admit, I’ve been coming around to the colorful sneaker trend that the Danish set swears by. I picked up not one, but two (!!!) saccharine sneakers while I was in the Scandi city and, as expected, they don’t disappoint.

While colorful sneakers can be daunting to style, though, there’s a few outfit formulas that the  Copenhagen crowd has perfected to a science. Below, scroll for colorful sneaker outfit inspiration and shop some of the best, can’t-miss pairs of the season.

  • 5 Trends That’ll Be Huge in 2024, According to Copenhagen’s Coolest Brand

5 Trends That’ll Be Huge in 2024, According to Copenhagen’s Coolest Brand

Another Copenhagen trip; another week spent wishing I was a Dane. I just returned to Los Angeles from my sixth time attending Copenhagen Fashion Week, which continues to outdo itself each and every season. As the resident Scandi expert here at Who What Wear, I often get asked about the region’s next big brands. Lately, my answer is singular: Gestuz.

Gestuz is well on its way to becoming Copenhagen’s most exciting brand. It’s already spent an impressive 15 years solidifying a fan base in Europe and is now setting its sights on the U.S. and Asia. So far, the slow-and-steady expansion is going swimmingly, considering the one and only Hailey Bieber wore a ripped-from-the-runway Gestuz look last fall.

From my front-row seat last week, I got an excellent look at Gestuz’s vision for spring/summer 2024—and it’s remarkably cool. Scroll down for my breakdown of the top five runway trends from Gestuz’s latest show during Copenhagen Fashion Week.

  • 5 Easy Styling Tricks to Copy From Copenhagen Fashion Week Runways

5 Easy Styling Tricks to Copy From Copenhagen Fashion Week Runways

Of all the sources of fashion inspiration at our fingertips, runway looks are often the most intimidating to re-create. The fantastical designs aren’t always made for real life, but allow Copenhagen Fashion Week to change your opinion on that. While there were plenty of daring, experimental trends on the spring/summer 2024 runways, I also noticed a plethora of realistic styling tricks that are extremely easy to copy.

How easy, you might ask? You probably already own the pieces you need to emulate these tips, making them cost zero dollars. Scroll down to see five simple ways you can have a Copenhagen-worthy outfit inspired by Ganni, Gestuz, Baum und Pferdgarten, and other Danish brands.

If you can believe it, the fashion set is already looking ahead to spring/summer 2024. Fashion can sometimes feel reductive and repetitive, or at least that’s the perspective one can come to hold after years of following the industry. It can be easy to fall into a sartorial inspiration dry spell when the trends begin to feel repetitive, the production cycle is far too fast to keep up with, and the brands feel inauthentic to their identity. All of this is to say that when you stumble upon something that feels new, it’s like a reawakening of one’s entire perspective.

And that’s very much the case, for me at least, when it comes to Copenhagen fashion week. While it’s a privilege to attend and report on shows in general, something about being able to travel with CIFF to attend the fall/winter 2023 shows in this Danish capital was something else entirely. It opened up the world to me, quite literally. With that opening, I discovered new brands, spotted street style trends, and experienced firsthand why Copenhagen has become the world’s coolest fashion capital.

That newly minted status very much has to do with the fact that some of the buzziest brands in the industry are coming from this Danish capital. But it also relates to the Scandi set’s renewed approach to clothing. From choosing to produce in a more sustainable way to creating trend-forward pieces that can transcend time to staying true to their brand’s aesthetic, this community has changed the way, we look at fashion. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Ahead, I’ve highlighted ten major trends from CPHFW’s F/W 23 collections. If these can’t break you out of a clothing-related rut, nothing will.

  • I Just Got Back From Copenhagen—Here’s Every Major Street Style Trend I Saw

I Just Got Back From Copenhagen—Here’s Every Major Street Style Trend I Saw

One of the best things in the world (besides buying something you love) is being able to travel. Having the privilege to leave the bubble you live in allows you to explore new places, learn new things, try different food, and experience new cultures. And while there are so benefits from traveling, my personal favorite is being able to spot (and be inspired by) street style trends. As a resident of New York City, I’m no stranger to seeing someone shuffle out of the subway in the buzziest micro-trend of the moment. That quick second can spark a desire to try something new, and that’s even more true when traveling.

I find that anytime I travel abroad, my sartorial horizons are broadened just as much as my cultural ones. This was very much the case with my last trip to Copenhagen for CIFF and fashion week. There was something so surreal about spotting some of my favorite Scandi-style influencers and editors from around the globe wearing the coolest trends of the moment. And so, to share that magic, I’ve rounded up some of the best looks from Copenhagen fashion week. Plus, I’ve identified 7 street-style trends that dominated the cobbled streets of this Danish capital and shopped them out. Prepare for some serious travel and style inspiration sans jetlag.
