The following list of healthcare jobs is by no means exhaustive, but it gives you a starting point in your medical career research. The base salaries come directly from those submitted by Canadian healthcare professionals to job posting website Indeed. Think about your return on investment of pursuing relevant training and education in each discipline.

    1. Midwife

    Average salary: $111,000
From the first weeks of conception to well after delivery, midwives provide assistance to those experiencing pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. This includes monitoring fetal health via ultrasounds, screening bloodwork and coaching. Becoming a midwife involves either getting a four-year university degree or a related postsecondary program in the field. It’s a regulated field. Tuition costs can range from $8,000 to $23,000. Like a doctor, this role also requires a period of hands-on training, and licensing rules and costs vary by province.

    2. Dental hygienist

    Average salary: $98,000
Cleaning teeth is just one aspect of this job, but it also involves monitoring for health risks like gum disease and diabetes, taking X-rays and, of course, assisting dentists in a range of procedures and surgeries. You can become a hygienist typically in two years, depending on which college, university or post-secondary dental hygiene program you chose. Like midwives, this role also involves getting a provincial license after you pass a certification exam. Tuition costs range from approximately $9,000 to $55,000 with licensing and examination fees ranging from $400 to $1,500.

    3. Acupuncturist

    Average salary: $98,000
Acupuncture stimulates and balances the body’s energy by inserting tiny needles into the skin. There’s growing support in traditional medicine that it can be a great way to relieve stress, promote better sleep and other health benefits, adding to the demand for acupuncturists and their unique skills. If you already have a bachelor’s degree in science, you can take courses to get more specialized training. Otherwise, you can enroll in a three to four-year diploma program and register with your local provincial or territorial body. Tuition costs range from approximately $5,000 to $45,000.

    4. Physical therapist

    Average salary: $94,000
Mobility issues can come up through a sports injury, a car accident, habitual movements and restrictions, and/or through the natural aging process. Physical therapists (a.k.a. physiotherapists) work closely with patients on highly personalized treatment plans. This not only involves making detailed assessments of any challenges or limitations in a patient’s movement but setting achievable goals based on a series of exercises and in-office manipulations. Physiotherapy also requires careful ongoing monitoring for signs of progress or the need to change the treatment plan. Physical therapists need a master’s degree to practice in Canada. Courses usually take about two to two-and-a-half years to complete, and tuition costs can range from approximately $10,000 to $42,000.

    5. Massage therapist

    Average salary: $94,000
Massage therapists help relieve physical tension and bodily stress, but they also help educate patients on how to continue therapies with stretching and exercises they can perform independently. HWC’s Cohen sees a particular demand for healthcare jobs that support seniors and long-term care providers, and this is a good example. Becoming a massage therapist begins with taking a three-year accredited training program. If you live in B.C., Ontario, or Newfoundland and Labrador, you’ll also have to apply for a regulated license that can cost nearly $1,000 a year. There are a wide variety of accredited massage therapy schools in Canada offering diplomas as well as massage therapy courses you can take across Canada. They can take between 18 and 24 months to complete, with tuition costs ranging from approximately $8,000 to $35,000.

    6. X-ray technician

    Average salary: $82,000
It takes two to three years to become an X-ray technician, depending on whether you specialize in diagnostic radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy. You’ll also need to be certified by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists, unless you’re working in B.C. or Quebec, where Certification by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists is not required. From there, you’ll be able to assist with diagnosing and treating conditions while performing everything from mammography to CT scans. Tuition costs can range from approximately $7,000 to $30,000.

    7. Paramedic

    Average salary: $66,000
When medical emergencies happen, paramedics are the first responders who assess illnesses, injuries and save lives. Depending on the situation, a paramedic might be applying oxygen, working with defibrillators or helping ensure patients are safely taken to a hospital. Expect to complete a one to three-year paramedical or emergency medical technology program through a college or hospital. Then you’ll be seeking both a provincial license as well as an additional license if you’ll be operating an emergency vehicle. Tuition ranges from approximately $5,000 to $20,000, while annual licensing fees range from $100 to $600, depending on the province in which you work.

The First Non-University Organization to Meet Standards for Its Diversity Professional Training Curriculum

    Press Release

    Jan 11, 2023

The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) has awarded Diversity Training University International (DTUI.com) the prestigious Accredited Provider accreditation. Only approved IACET Accredited Providers organizations can offer IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The accreditation period extends for five years and includes all programs DTUI provides and creates during that period.

Senior managing partner Billy Vaughn, Ph.D., stated that “cultural diversity leadership work is too volatile and critical to rely on bootstrap learning or simply passing a test. DTUI created the first diversity certification courses in 1998 in response to the growing need for diversity leaders trained to do the work and get results. That requires an excellent training program that meets professional standards. IACET accreditation demonstrates our commitment to high standards in training diversity leadership competence. We thank our staff, advisory board, and graduates for their efforts and support throughout the accreditation process.”

To achieve Accredited Provider accreditation, DTUI completed a rigorous application process and successfully demonstrated adherence to the ANSI/IACET 2018-1 Standard for Continuing Education and Training by addressing the design, development, administration, and evaluation of its programs. DTUI pledges its continued compliance with the Standard now that it is authorized to use the IACET name and Accredited Provider logo on promotional course material. In addition, DTUI is currently listed on the IACET website and recognized as offering the highest quality continuing education and training programs.

DTUI currently offers diversity certification courses through our subsidiary Diversity Executive Leadership Academy. A partial list of our currently accredited courses includes:

    • Cultural Diversity Leadership Foundations
    • Training Design & Development
    • Strategic Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Initiatives

Career Certified Acquires Amber Book, an Innovator in ARE® 5.0 Multi-Exam Course Prep, the Essential Exam for Licensure in Architecture

    [ad_1]

Expanding its innovation into architecture, multi-vertical education leader Career Certified continues to elevate careers relying on licensure and certification, seeking to attract the 60,000 potential architecture license candidates actively working to pass the ARE® 5.0 Multi-Exam Course each year.

    Press Release

    Nov 10, 2022 09:40 MST

Today, Career Certified acquired Amber Book, a leader in architecture online exam prep differentiated by its high-quality, engaging and animated content, created with carefully-trimmed topics that focus on high-yield exam areas. Promising continued growth on what has already gained industry attention for online Real Estate, Mortgage Loan Origination, and Home Inspection education, Career Certified has just expanded its impact on education into the architecture arena.

Founded by Michael Ermann—an award-winning architect, an award-winning educator, and the first person to pass all six ARE® 5.0 divisions—Amber Book has seen consistent upward organic growth. This territory was claimed by completely renovating the mindset around test prep education, leaning into unique animation, and developing keen insight into real-world application. Amber Book targets exam prep content to focus on the most relevant areas of the ARE® exam, offering the highest likelihood of passing in the fewest number of hours studying. The innovative content and learning methodology created by Amber Book are meant to net higher ARE® exam pass rates.

What began as an underground following quickly gained momentum from the best-of-the-best in architecture. Amber Book’s free, flagship, weekly online study sessions, “40 Minutes of Competence,” offer engaging problem-based and narrative-based content to those pursuing licensure. Mr. Ermann and the entire team behind Amber Book are fully embedded in the architecture community and recognized as authentic, approachable thought leaders.

“Amber Book embodies so much of our DNA towards innovation to better educate, and if there was ever a rockstar status to claim in architecture, Michael Ermann claimed it early through his dedication to the practice,” Gary Weiss, CEO of Career Certified, said. “As I’ve stated before, our pledge is that within the Career Certified family, enrollees will receive the most innovative, outcome-based, and superior education to deliver career freedom. We simply look to amplify the impact Amber Book has on generations of architects to come.”

The advantage this transaction brings to the marketplace is immeasurable. Career Certified can tap into its operational excellence in sales, marketing, and product innovation while retaining both the team and core of Amber Book and expand into continuing education for architecture (and much more).

“From the beginning, our goal was to help as many practitioners as possible reach licensure,” Michael Ermann, creator of Amber Book, explained. “Collaborating with Career Certified doesn’t only achieve this goal, but also offers us acceleration in innovation for architecture. With this partnership and the operational excellence Career Certified brings to us, we strengthen our leadership and impact the success of more emerging professionals obtaining licensure.”

The duo were presented with the prize by Mrs. Anja Karliczek, the Federal Minister of Education and Research of Germany, and Dr. Belén Garijo, the Chair of the Executive Board and CEO of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, during the 2021 Future Insight Days conference. Lu and Techtmann are recognized for their work, which uses microbes and chemicals to break down end-of-life plastics and transform them into edible food.

“The winners of this year’s Future Insight Prize have created a ground-breaking technology with the potential to generate a safe and sustainable source of food while reducing the environmental harms associated with plastic waste and traditional agricultural methods,” said Garijo. “We congratulate Ting Lu and Stephen Techtmann for their promising research, and hope that the Future Insight Prize will help to accelerate their efforts.”

Food is the most essential need for humans. However, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there are 690 million people around the world who suffer from hunger. This problem is exacerbated by reductions of arable land, population growth, and threats to food production such as from the COVID-19 pandemic. The other pressing challenge is plastic pollution. Plastics are pervasive in modern society and each year, the world produces 380 million tons of new plastics. The UN Environment Programme published that 79% of all plastic waste is accumulated in the natural environment, which causes serious adverse impacts on the environment, wildlife and human health. By converting plastic waste to edible food, Lu and Techtmann strive to tackle food insecurity and plastic pollution, the two grand challenges of our modern society, simultaneously.

Lu’s research at Illinois focuses on microbial synthetic biology. “Combining experimentation with modeling, my lab harnesses engineered gene circuits to program microbial cell functionalities for a variety of novel biotechnological applications, such as food generation in this case,” said Lu.

Techtmann is an environmental microbiologist who studies microbial communities in diverse natural environments. His lab studies how complex microbial communities can cooperate to perform functions of industrial interest.

“Our complementary expertise allows us to take plastic waste and turn it into something valuable,” Lu said.

The core of the duo’s technology is to utilize synthetic microbial consortia – a combination of natural and rationally engineered microorganisms – for efficient conversion of waste to readily edible food. In addition, they use synthetic biology approaches to augment probiotics to improve food quality by increasing nutritional contents, improving the resistance to foodborne pathogens and further adding personalized therapeutic benefits.

“I’m truly honored to receive the prize,” Lu said. “I’m also deeply grateful to Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany for creating such a visionary award and for providing resources and encouragement that allow us to advance the research.”

With the prize, the duo plan to continue their research by enabling a fully biological solution for PET plastic conversion, augmenting the biosafety and health-promoting contents of food and further expanding the technology to additional plastics or other types of waste for food generation.

“When I first started my own lab at Illinois, I wanted to work on something that’s both intellectually challenging and societally impactful. Food generation is such a topic,” said Lu, “As bioengineers, we are called to use science and technology in service of humanity by improving human health and nutrition. It’s a real privilege to use my knowledge and to partner with other researchers to tackle harrowing issues.”

Lu has a long-standing interest in food generation. In addition to this waste-to-food project, he has worked on the engineering of probiotic lactic acid bacteria that are involved in cheese and yogurt fermentation to reduce foodborne pathogens, increase food storage, and confer therapeutic effects. Lu has also participated in the Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) project, an international effort led by professors Stephen Long and Donald Ort at the University of Illinois and supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, and the UK Government’s Department for International Development. The goal of the RIPE project is to increase agricultural production worldwide by improving photosynthesis efficiency, thereby helping to reduce hunger and poverty.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is renowned for innovation in food sciences. Established in 1876, the Morrow Plots are the oldest experimental crop field in America and research there was instrumental in gaining knowledge on crop rotation, soil nutrient depletion and the effect of synthetic and natural fertilizers. The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), where Lu conducts some of his work, directly overlooks these plots that have been a source of inspiration for him.

In addition to the department of bioengineering and IGB, Lu is affiliated with the department of physics, the Center for Biophysics and Quantitative Biology and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Generation Brings Opportunities to Communities Hit Hardest Amid the Pandemic

    [ad_1]

Black and Latinx communities, women, are among the largest communities impacted by job losses during the pandemic.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 14, 2021

Generation USA, a workforce development nonprofit transforming the education to employment ecosystem, offers reskilling and training programs at no cost to the unemployed with priority admissions for Black and Latinx communities, as well as women— the communities who have been hit hardest amid the resurgence of the pandemic in late 2020.

According to data obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. economy lost a net 140,000 jobs in December 2020. An analysis by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) found that women lost 156,000 jobs overall in the same month, while men gained about 16,000; women accounted for 100% of December’s job losses within the United States; In the same month alone, 154,000 Black women left the labor force.

All-time enrollment data provided by Generation reveals that, of its participants who opted to provide their ethnicity, Black and Latinx individuals made up nearly 70% of participants. Of the same group of people, 58.83% of participants were women.

“Over the past 20 years, I’ve witnessed young people around the country make educational strides but it hasn’t impacted the long-term, multi-generational wealth and well-being needed to have sustainable, stable lives,” says Generation CEO Sean Segal. “And that’s only been magnified by the current moment. Throughout the pandemic, 40 million people have become unemployed in the U.S. 42% of the jobs lost are not coming back. Those that lost income at the greatest levels are young people, people who didn’t go to college, Black and brown people, and people who earned the lowest wages before the pandemic.”

Maria Aspan, in a recent Fortune article, states, “Black and Latina women working in retail, restaurants, and other ‘essential’ service-sector industries, often for very low pay, have been disproportionately laid off amid the pandemic’s lockdowns and business closures. Last month, as worsening coronavirus casualties led to new shutdowns, leisure and hospitality employers cut 498,000 jobs—almost 57% of which were held by women.”

In October of 2020, Generation announced a partnership with Verizon, which aims to significantly increase access to their free, technology-focused career training programs to help reskill workers; Generation aims to support Verizon’s goal of preparing 500,000 individuals, preparing them with jobs ready for the future by 2030 as part of the Citizen Verizon initiative — Verizon’s business plan for economic, environmental, and social advancement.

By leveraging the importance of impact hiring, Generation USA will continue to provide its students with mentorship and the support they need to excel and launch into a new career.

Generation USA Makes Major Impact with Impact Hiring Initiative

The non-profit prepares, guides, and supports people for life-changing, sustainable careers.

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 23, 2020

Systematic racism continues to plague minority groups, and it’s especially apparent when it comes to the job hunt.

Generation USA, a Washington, D.C.-based company that transforms education to employment systems, is addressing this discrepancy with impact hiring.

According to The Rockefeller Foundation, black workers face unemployment rates that are almost five percentage points higher than the national rate, while Latinx workers face rates almost three percentage points greater than the overall average.

This is a clear indication of the importance of impact hiring, as it places an emphasis on hiring, retaining, and promoting entry-level talent from marginalized groups.

“Impact hiring can provide the employer with the data they need to vet applicants who might lack experience but are well-suited to succeed in available positions,” said Sean Segal, Chief Executive Officer, Generation USA. “If you go beyond the surface, impact hiring presents a great opportunity for employers, employees, and economic health.”

Generation USA understands the trials and tribulations minority groups face when it comes to finding a job and, through their workforce development program, they’ve narrowed their focus on hiring initiatives with alternative populations.

Through their data-centered, seven component methodology, Generation USA serves unemployed, underemployed, or those who need to learn new skills.

The non-profit currently has programs in 14 cities and addresses the recruiting and hiring processes to find ways to put marginalized employees in a place to succeed and on the right path to evolve into larger roles within an organization.

Generation USA is pushing back on systematic racism, as they have extensive experience in serving opportunity youth and promoting diversity inclusion.

In fact, 85 percent of learners are black or Latinx, 62 percent have a high school diploma or GED, and 40 percent of learners have dependents.

By leveraging the importance of impact hiring, Generation USA will continue to provide its students with mentorship and the support they need to excel and launch into a new career.

  • American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians Makes History as First Board Certification for Stem Cell Physicians

American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians Makes History as First Board Certification for Stem Cell Physicians

    [ad_1]

The AASCP Scientific Congress met on Aug. 2-4, 2019 in Miami and offered the first Board certifications to eligible physicians.

The American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians hosted yet another Scientific Congress, which was held at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Florida, on Aug. 2-4, 2019. The conference featured three days of educational and social events with leading physicians and pioneers in the fields of stem cell, live cell and regenerative medicine. A very challenging three-hour written examination for Board certification was awarded, creating a pathway for Diplomat and Fellowship certification in Regenerative medicine.

The Board of American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians is the official board certifying body of the American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians (AASCP). As a nationally recognized academy with a mission to bring like-minded physicians together to increase awareness and education of regenerative medicine, the AASCP is proud to announce the Fellowship and Diplomat certification.

In order to be eligible for certification or recertification through the AASCP, licensed physicians in great standing must meet the stringent eligibility requirements that have been defined by the board. AASCP places an emphasis on not only psychometrically evaluated testing and advanced training but also moral character and experience. Furthermore, AASCP has a clear path toward recertification for qualified physicians. Their standards for recertification typically include a commitment to continuing medical education, successful completion of a recertification examination, participation in a non-remedial medical ethics program and other similar requirements.

AASCP is also well known for working with physicians to provide unique opportunities for board certification in their specialty of regenerative medicine. For instance, the AASCP offers ongoing workshop modules led by highly prestigious and esteemed physicians in this field certifying and educating on different treatments and techniques.

Another defining characteristic of the AASCP is their commitment to ongoing education and awareness. This is why they’ve developed innovative new committees, including the Institutional Review Board and opportunities for physicians and researchers to submit their work for review and exposure.

The AASCP was founded to recognize licensed physicians who have shown a specialty and interest in regenerative medicine. Increasingly, hospitals and medical staff placement agencies are prioritizing hiring board-certified physicians, and the AASCP feels it is important to offer qualified professionals a choice when they’re researching board certifying bodies. The AASCP was founded by a group of leading physicians in 2017, and over the last two years their team of professionals has worked tirelessly to improve the certification process in order to ensure that their Diplomats are recognized for their achievements in the medical profession.

Currently, licensed physicians in great standing will complete eight modules for certification. At that point, they will qualify to complete a written and oral exam which is given to them by the eight workshop leaders. Upon approval, the AASCP will confer upon them the title of Diplomat of the AASCP, and at that point after one year of good standing, they will qualify to become a Fellow of American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians, granting them the title of FAASCP.

The AASCP aims to serve as an educational resource for physicians, scientists, and the public in diseases that can be caused by physiological dysfunction that are ameliorable to medical treatment. The American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians (AASCP) is an organization created to advance research and the development of therapeutics in regenerative medicine, including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease related to or occurring within the human body.

Dr. Joseph Purita, Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and head of the AASCP Review Board and Examination Committee was thrilled with the outcome of this August event, stating, “I want to say I am so pleased with how well our first test-takers did on the exam. Their studying paid off. I am sure they will tell you the questions were challenging. I think it is a credit to our entire organization. We all need to realize one important fact, unlike any other field in medicine where things are well established, in the field of Regenerative Medicine, any of us has the ability to make a significant discovery to advance the entire field. I am certain advances will come from this group.”

Dr. Martin Dayton, the President of the AASCP stated, “Successful board certifications took place at this event, and I want to congratulate the following physicians for their outstanding contributions to AASCP and for their Board Certifications”:
