Is it still Brat Summer? Find out at Charli XCX’s Orlando arena show

Charli XCX comes to town this weekend

Charli XCX has entranced fans of hyper-pop into fervent devotion for years, but leveled up exponentially with this year’s Brat.

With that album, Charli XCX unleashed perhaps one of the best pop albums and seasonal takeovers of all time. Brat was a loaded crossover album seamlessly blending pop and experimental electronic music, and packed with certified club anthems reflecting on themes of projection (“Sympathy Is a Knife”), self-sabotage (“I Might Say Something Stupid”), bearing children (“I Think About It All the Time”), and all the seriousness and levity that is driving to the airport (“Apple”).

Hailed as “a cultural reset” Brat and the ensuing “brat girl summer” (see: sweat, sex, white tanks, “It girls,” controversy, dancing all night to lyrics you’d confess to a therapist) immediately took on a life beyond mere listening, spawning memes, multiple Boiler Room sets, dance parties, the “Apple” TikTok dance, a website dedicated to brat green (#8ACE00), an infatuated Kyle MacLachlan, a presidential campaign theme, etc. Charli XCX brings her PARTYGIRL 365 disposition to Orlando Sunday with co-headliner Troye Sivan.

    7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, Kia Center, $45.50-$125.

Etran de L’Aïr play the Social Monday

One year later and our wigs are still flipped from seeing the volcanic Mdou Moctar at the Social. Well, hold on to your hairpieces because another outfit of Tuareg rock titans are on their way downtown.

Etran de L’Aïr (“Stars of the Air”) are a relatively newer proposition in the world of Tuareg international firebrands. Starting up in 1995 and releasing a string of recent albums on Portland label Sahel Sounds, they’ve made a name for themselves with (yes) celestial grooves and mantric boogies that create a joyous devotional ramble through vibrating sonic vistas.

All this to say, this band is going to be positively hypnotic in the Social.

    7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, The Social, $20.

Yngwie Malmsteen celebrates 40 years of shred

Yngwie Malmsteen, known as much for volcanic six-string shredding as for his flair for pomp and circumstance, brings a tour marking 40 years of his solo(ing) career to the greater Orlando area.

Over four decades ago, the Swedish guitarist came to America to pursue his musical fortunes, recording with the likes of Steeler and Alcatrazz before deciding to strike out on his own.

The result was solo debut Rising Force. From there, Malmsteen — dubbed the maestro of “Neo-Classical Hard Rock” — has been the darling of guitar mags and the shred-sector of the heavy metal world since.

The 37-date tour kicks off in Florida, and though Malmsteen doesn’t quite venture into Orlando, he’ll be rocking in nearby Mount Dora.

“I couldn’t have done it without all of you and your support throughout all these years. Looking forward to creating some magic with all of you! More is more!” said Malmsteen in a press statement.

Yngwie Malmsteen plays the Mount Dora Music Hall (make a day of it!) on Saturday, Sept. 28. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

Sum 41 bring their farewell tour to Orlando

Don’t miss the Canadian punk group Sum 41 on the Orlando stop of their farewell “Tour of the Setting Sum.” Hit up the Orlando Amphitheater Tuesday and travel back to a time of catchy pop-punk melodies and chain wallets.

The electric performance of the nearly three-decades-old group is sure to feature high-energy stage antics and notable hits like “In Too Deep” and “Still Waiting” from the group’s early years.

A guaranteed crowd-pleaser for Tuesday’s show is “Fat Lip,” the biggest early hit (making them an MTV mainstay) from the trio. But Sum 41 isn’t stuck in the past. On the setlist are deep cuts and new tracks from Sum 41’s ambitious new record, Heaven :x: Hell, continuing their heady hybrid of soaring pop melodies with punk undertones.

    5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, $53-$253.

Deftones to play an arena show in Orlando next year

Deftones have announced a 2025 North American tour — and that faint roar you hear is the distance is nü-metal fans, erstwhile mall-goths and Gen-Z hipsters all collectively losing their minds.

The multi-platinum Grammy-winning Californian band kick off their tour, their first extended outing in three years, in February of next year in Portland. There are only two Florida stops in late March: Orlando, and Sunrise the next night.

Expect some new tunes making their way into the setlist as the band recently wrapped recording their next album.

Along for the tour are the Mars Volta and Fleshwater.

Deftones play the Kia Center on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 20, through Ticketmaster.

    Silent Piano comes to Orlando

You’ve heard of silent raves, but how about something a little more calming? A pop-up musical happening featuring a “silent piano” makes its way to Orlando’s Lake Eola Park later this month.

MindTravel features a musician playing the piano live and direct into headphones worn by audience members. The pianist, Murray Hidary, is not only the musical brains behind the operation, but also a meditation expert. His musical teachings through MindTravel offer listeners “deeper meditation, sleep, health, vitality and creativity,” according to the MindTravel website.

Once attendees don their headphones, they are guided through the musical meditative journey by Hidary. The experience is designed to provoke introspection and help listeners tap into their inner peace.

MindTravel happens at Lake Eola Park at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite.

Double Bubble help Will’s Pub celebrate 29 years

Orlando music venue — winner of “Best Bar Overall” in our 2024 Best of Orlando Readers Poll — Will’s Pub is celebrating 29 years of spirits and spirited mayhem with (what else?) some live music this wekend.

The Mills 50 bar hosts three different anniversary events that go a long way toward showing off the Pub’s essential eclecticism. First off, on Friday night (Sept. 6), Kaleigh Baker’s Someday Honey throws down with a dreamy rock-folk hybrid. On Saturday (Sept. 7), things get louder with Cat Company, Pulses, Sails Ahead, Mode and Burial Joy. And finally it’s all-out war on Sunday night (Sept. 8) with the “Will’s Ponx” event featuring the stacked local lineup of M.A.C.E., Double Bubble, Future Bartenderz, Petty Thefts and Vicious Dreams. (Take a nap that afternoon!)

    Midge Ure plays Orlando

Suave Brit singer Midge Ure is on his way to Mount Dora in a few days to play the Mount Dora Music Hall on his “Band in a Box” tour. Worth the drive, we’d say.

Ure, who came to fame fronting sleek synthesists Ultravox, promises a set stuffed with electro-pop perfection from his time in Visage, Ultravox and his solo work.

“Lots of people asking me to clarify what ‘Band in a Box’ actually is. It consists of myself on electric guitar, synthesizer and vocals, alongside my longtime keyboard player Charlie Round-Turner playing live with various loops, samples and programmed drums. A band in a box!” said Ure to Orlando Weekly. “This format allows me to perform a full band performance with a ‘stripped down’ duo.”

This is the penultimate date of the tour, so expect this boxed band to be very road-honed.

Midge Ure plays the Mount Dora Music Hall at 520 N. Baker St. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m.

    Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

The Boston-born rock duo Slothrust brings their yearning and impassioned sounds to Orlando. Supporting Badflower on their “No Place Like Home” tour, singer/guitarist Leah Wellbaum and drummer Will Gorin are playing their melancholy tunes in 30 shows across the country.

Since their start in 2010, Slothrust has released eight albums, one EP and 22 singles defined by spirited vocals and distorted guitar tones. Stereogum praises the band as “bluesy alt-rock with stellar guitar work and swaggering wordplay.”

At this show, one of only two Florida dates, you should buckle up and get ready for a night of all-too-relatable anthems of love, loss, loneliness and (maybe) getting it all back together again.

The marquee at the Roxy at Mahall’s

Hot Mulligan and The Wonder Years will headline a “secret show” Friday, Sept. 6th at The Roxy at Mahall’s in Lakewood.

The concert, to be held at the 800-capacity venue, will be considerably more intimate than the ones both bands played in Cleveland last year. The Lansing, Michigan-hailing, emo-leaning Hot Mulligan headlined The Agora, which holds 2,000 people, in November. Meanwhile, The Wonder Years, a pop-punk outfit out of suburban Philadelphia, played the 1,200-capacity House of Blues the prior month.

Both bands’ trip to the Cleveland area will come one day before they’re to play the Ohio Is for Lovers Festival at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati.

The show was teased Sunday on promoter BravoArtist’s social media pages, and The Roxy’s marquee noted the show the same night.

And while it’s a considerable booking for the relatively new venue, especially considering how Hot Mulligan’s following has exploded in recent years, both bands have a connection to Mahall’s. Hot Mulligan is signed to Wax Bodega, a Philadelphia label co-founded by The Wonder Years bassist Josh Martin. Its releases are sold at the bowling alley/bar/concert venue.

Adrian Legg plays the International Guitar Festival in Orlando

There’s some international musical royalty on the way to Orlando this weekend. Guitarist Adrian Legg comes to Timucua to play a headlining set as part of the International Guitar Festival.

Don’t let his somewhat buttoned-down look fool you — U.K. axman Legg has been plying his craft since the early 1970s, racking up innumerable guitar mag poll wins and praise from Britpop mag Q as a “guitarist of astonishing virtuosity.”

Promised for his set on Saturday is “alternating-bass style with harmonics, banjo-peg retuning and single or double-string bending” — which sounds pretty wild when we mightily struggle with barre chords.

Adrian Legg plays the Timucua Arts Foundation’s Guitar Festival on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available through the venue.

Celebrate the dog days of summer with Kevin Gates

As summer’s end is right around the corner, Summer Fest organizers picked up the phone to call in one of the last certified cool concerts of the season. “Two Phone” Kevin Gates answered and will bring friends to Addition Financial Arena on Saturday.

Gates has been in the game for well over a decade. He began his rap career in 2007 in his hometown of New Orleans, and was further established in the genre when he signed to Atlantic Records in 2013.

The Fest’s lineup also features GloRilla, WRRY, Boston Richey and Rob 49. Along with the night’s heavy lineup, WRRY has hinted at an additional special guest joining the five on stage. Summer Fest is sure to be a night for the books with live renditions of signature club anthems like “Really Really” by Gates, “Yeah Glo” and “Tomorrow 2” by Glorilla, “Bullseye 2” by Boston Richey and more.

Call it a comeback: Pylon Reenactment Society play Orlando this week

Athens, to paraphrase some singer somewhere, has so much to answer for — in
the annals of alternative rock. For a few halcyon years in the 1980s, the Georgia college town was ground zero for adventurous guitar pop, birthing a scene that included R.E.M., The B-52s, Love Tractor … and Pylon.

Though never quite reaching the commercial heights of their better-known pals, Pylon’s angular, brittle, but deeply groovy and buoyant sound has become an inextricable element of the DNA of modern indie music. Pylon released their influential debut album, Gyrate, in 1980, a perfect Southern answer to the post-punk grooves of Gang of Four and Siouxsie and the Banshees; all razor-sharp precision pieces led by the exuberant and commanding snarl and scream of frontwoman Vanessa Briscoe Hay.

Pylon carved out a niche as an oft-copied cult act — though they did play big shows opening for U2 and R.E.M. — before disbanding in 1991, later regrouping in the early 2000s to record for tastemaking label DFA. The death of guitarist Randall Bewley put an end to the original Pylon, but Pylon Reenactment Society is an utterly charming successor. Members of Casper & the Cookies support the inimitable Hay on a romp through the Pylon catalog — and, of late, some new material.

As part of a run of upcoming dates that includes shows in Jacksonville, Memphis and Nashville, Pylon Reenactment Society returns to Orlando on Friday, Aug. 30. It will be their first Central Florida date since a concert at Thornton Park’s Veranda in 2018 and before that, the Beach Club around about 1990 or so. Singer Hay remembers a surreal moment at an early show in Fort Lauderdale where, sitting outside the venue, she spotted a plane in the sky towing a banner that shouted “PYLON TONIGHT.” (Local promoters, take note of this hustle.) “I just cracked up,” she laughs. “Why didn’t I have my camera with me?”

As you may have now surmised, Orlando Weekly had the singular honor of an audience with the iconic Hay, wherein we chatted about past, present and future matters Pylon Reenactment Society.

PRS was originally intended as a one-off, a live happening as part of Art Rocks Athens in 2014, but it quickly became apparent that there was some alchemy at work. The event’s curator, Jason NeSmith, reached out to Hay, wanting to include Pylon’s music in the proceedings. Although hesitant at first, she worked with NeSmith to put a band together. NeSmith studied hard on Bewley’s unique guitar techniques and they did the gig successfully. Hay promptly “put it on a shelf and forgot about it,” but things weren’t over yet.

“A year later, [NeSmith] was like, ‘Hey, we’re doing it again, and we could give you more time this year.’ So we played longer, opening for [B-52s singer] Fred Schneider’s solo project The Superions. Some friends of ours, [Denver indie-rockers] Dressy Bessy, heard about this, and they were about to do a short tour in North Carolina and in Georgia. And they said, ‘Would you like to open for us?’And I was like,‘Somebody wants to see this? They’ll pay to see this?’ But I told them we would. Then after that, we just continued to get offers to play. It organically grew into a writing project. I had, you know, previously been involved in a writing project with Jason and Kay Stanton and Supercluster, and so we just couldn’t help it. We started writing songs. Here we are, 10 years later, we just put out an album [Magnet Factory],” recounts Hay.

Call it a comeback: Pylon Reenactment Society play Orlando this week

“So the idea wasn’t just to continue the Pylon process, it was also a fun thing for us to do. Getting to write with these creative people and perform. With the name, we wanted to be sure that we differentiated ourselves from Pylon. I had the idea to call ourselves the Pylon Reenactment Society. Because the third time, we were having to relearn all of our music and we were jokingly calling ourselves at practice the Pylon Historical Reenactment Society. So I shortened that down a little and that’s where the name came from.”

Hay looks back at a now 45-plus-year “career” in music with a mix of understated surprise and deep gratitude.

“I never could have foreseen this. It’s been very therapeutic for me, and it’s been fun, you know, all the craziness and changes that life brings — to be able to still connect creatively,” she marvels. “In the 1980s, bands didn’t have much of a lifespan beyond five years. I never expected people to continue to have interest. But there were two things that happened in the mid-to-late ’80s after we disbanded. The first was that R.E.M. recorded ‘Crazy’ as a b-side for one of their singles, andt hat rekindled interest. The other thing was Athens, GA: Inside Out [the 1986 Athens scene doc], that brought focus back to Pylon. Otherwise, I think we would have been in cut-out dustbins all over the country, 99 cents.

“In 1988, after I had my first child, R.E.M. started talking to [Pylon members] Michael and Curtis and Randy — I wasn’t going out a whole lot at that point. They were like,‘Y’all need to get back together. We think the world’s ready for you now.’ Well, they might not have been ready, but we sure had fun.”

Despite the tongue-in-cheek appellation “Reenactment Society,” PRS is a living and breathing creative undertaking with new, younger fans dancing to all points of the Pylon discography.
