    Work has the power to change lives. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), having a job is not simply about earning a paycheck—it’s about building skills, gaining independence and being part of the community. The dignity that comes with work cannot be overstated. It gives people purpose, belonging, and pride in contributing to something larger than themselves.

    Unfortunately, a long-standing and harmful myth persists that people with IDD cannot meaningfully contribute to the workforce or society. This misconception, rooted in outdated stereotypes, overlooks the strengths, talents, and determination that people with IDD demonstrate every day. When given the opportunity and the right supports, they prove to be reliable, skilled, and dedicated employees.

    Across Long Island, partnerships between businesses and community organizations are breaking down those barriers. Employers like Home Depot, Catholic Health, ADC Corporation in Hauppauge, and nonprofits such as Long Island Cares are showing what’s possible when inclusion becomes part of the workplace culture.

    At Home Depot, one worker who began in the stockroom now trains new hires. At Catholic Health, a young man in a support role became known for lifting morale with his enthusiasm and commitment. At ADC Corporation, employees with IDD have mastered every position on the production line, proudly saying: “I’ve worked every job here.” And at Long Island Cares, an organization devoted to fighting hunger, people with IDD contribute daily through food distribution and support roles that directly help families in need.

    These success stories aren’t exceptions—they’re examples of what happens when people are given a fair chance. Employers often discover that workers with IDD bring reliability, focus, and a strong work ethic. Retention improves, morale rises, and customers notice that inclusion isn’t just possible—it’s good business. These partnerships aren’t acts of ; they’re smart investments that strengthen companies and communities alike.

    When people with IDD work, they become visible, active members of their neighborhoods. They contribute to the local economy, join in civic life and challenge outdated stereotypes. Their co-workers and neighbors begin to see their abilities rather than their limitations, building a culture of respect that benefits everyone.

    The pathway of work also facilitates people with IDD to climb the employment ladder. A first job stocking shelves can lead to new skills, promotions, or even management roles. Each step builds confidence, responsibility and independence. These are not small achievements—they are milestones that open doors for greater participation in community life.

    The dignity of work strengthens families as well. Parents of young people with disabilities often worry about what the future will hold. When their son or daughter earns that first paycheck, the answer is clear: Yes, they can. The pride is shared by the entire family, who see their loved one valued and contributing just like anyone else.

    Creating these opportunities requires partnership. Businesses, nonprofits and community organizations each play a role in building pathways from opportunity to independence. Employers must be willing to hire. Nonprofits must prepare and support workers. Communities must champion inclusion. When all three come together, everyone benefits.

    The call to action is simple: If you’re a business owner or leader, consider the untapped potential in the disability community. Open a door. Offer a job or internship. Partner with organizations preparing people with IDD for success. You’ll gain a dedicated employee—and help build a stronger, fairer and more compassionate society.

    Work changes lives. It brings dignity, independence and respect. When people with IDD are given the chance to work, we all reap the rewards. They are not a burden to be carried; they are neighbors, colleagues and contributors whose talents enrich our communities. The sooner we retire the old myths and embrace their abilities, the stronger and more compassionate our society will become.

  • Islanders launch partnerships with Molloy, Plattduetsche | Long Island Business News

    Two organizations landed yearlong marketing partnerships with the after being named the first winners of the team’s Business Boost Program.

    Rockville Centre-based Molloy University and Plattduetsche Home Society – a Franklin Square-based retirement community – were named partners for their “outstanding engagement with the local community and their involvement in local healthcare initiatives,” according to the Islanders.

    The partnerships are designed to provide marketing support to both Molloy and Plattduetsche. This program includes media packages that promote the two organizations that will run on Islanders’ channels through the 2025-26 season.

    The partnerships were developed in collaboration with Anthem, a insurance provider, which worked closely with the Islanders and UBS Arena to select this year’s marketing partners, according to the hockey teams.

    “It’s an incredible thrill to be featured in the Islanders Business Boost program – especially as Molloy University celebrates our 70th anniversary,” Debra McCarthy, the community liaison of Molloy’s Office of Advancement, said in a written statement.

    “Being part of this program amplifies our voices across Long Island and beyond, and we’re proud to stand alongside the Islanders in celebrating local impact, legacy and leadership,” she added.

    “UBS Arena brings a world-class energy and pride to Long Island,” McCarthy said. “We can’t wait to attend a game this season, cheer on the Islanders, and see Molloy University’s name shining bright in the arena.”

    Ritchie Oliver, Plattduetsche’s director of operations said in a written statement that the “partnership with the Islanders means so much to us. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we have to make the most of our marketing budget.

    “A package such as the one associated with this partnership would be difficult for us to afford. Aside from the marketing package, we are thrilled to be associated with such a respected and adored organization as the NY Islanders, our ‘neighbor up the pike,’” Oliver said.

    “Long Island’s love of the Islanders, the breadth of the team’s reach and UBS Arena’s proximity to our facility makes it a perfect partnership for achieving our marketing goals,” he added. “Working with the Islanders on this promotion project has been an absolute pleasure and we can’t wait to see what’s next.”

    The move to roll more officers out on the streets Friday and Saturday, officials said, is part of a program called “Blue Lights Nights,” which has the goal of fostering community and civic engagement, along with stepping up traffic enforcement and crime prevention.

    As many as 30 different law enforcement agencies, including Prince George’s County Police and sheriff’s deputies, along with the D.C. police department and Metro Transit Police Department, will be out in communities across Prince George’s County.

    “We’re looking to interact with our community, hear from our community, see what their concerns are and just make sure we are available for them,” Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader said. “We are going to be doing some traffic stops. This is not a stat-driven engagement initiative by any means. This is a community engagement initiative.”

    Nader said during a news conference Wednesday in Upper Marlboro that community engagement and policing means building more trust and transparency with citizens. He said when he and the other law enforcement leaders came up with the idea, they wanted to make it family friendly.

    “We’re having things for kids, we’re having movie nights. We’re really looking at a great two days,” he said. “What we want to do is flood our communities with police officers to go out there and have a positive influence on our communities.”

    A list of community events is available on Prince George’s County’s website.

    Nader said extra officers will be on patrol, and he insisted this is not to drive up arrest statistics, but to engage with Prince George’s County’s residents. He wasn’t able to provide an immediate number of extra officers that will be working those dates, but said it would be a substantial increase.

    The 14th Annual Juneteenth NY Celebration – one of New York City’s premier and largest annual events commemorating the federally-recognized holiday – is quickly approaching for an exciting and action-packed three-day celebration, kicking off virtually and in-person on Friday, June 16th through June 18th from the epicenter of Black culture and community in Brooklyn, NY.

    1. Creates a positive workplace culture

    Ingraining community involvement in company culture creates a happier workplace. Prioritizing volunteerism and social responsibility has a positive impact on employees, improving their morale and increasing job satisfaction. According to research by Boston College, “employees with favorable perceptions of their organization’s corporate citizenship tend to experience higher levels of self-efficacy, hope and optimism about work.”

    Community involvement also improves company culture by helping to build strong teams. A study on volunteerism found that 92% of employees believe volunteer activities through work develop their people and teamwork skills, and 77% believe they strengthen relationships.

    In short, giving back to the community increases engagement in an organization, which creates a positive workplace culture.

    2. Cultivates customer trust

    Authentically and consistently showing care for and involvement in the community builds the trust necessary for creating a loyal customer base.

    Customers trust businesses that care about the community they serve.

The positive perception fostered by giving back to the community increases customer trust, making it easy for consumers to support a business that is involved in the community over one that is not.

    3. Attracts and retains talent

    Employees today want to work for a company that gives back to the community. In fact, one survey points to community involvement as a powerful recruiting tool. More than 80% of company respondents in the survey reported that community involvement helps improve the ability to recruit employees and reduce turnover.

    There is no question that community involvement helps companies attract and retain millennial and Gen Z employees who now make up nearly half (46%) of the full-time workforce in the U.S. These generational cohorts want the companies they work for to lead the way in giving back to the community.

    There are many ways for business owners and entrepreneurs to give back to their communities.     A great way to identify community involvement projects is to ask employees and customers about community needs and how the company can be most impactful in providing time, resources or money (or all of the above) to help.

    A survey examining the philosophies, attitudes and activities of entrepreneurs related to their communities found that 91% of entrepreneurs are currently engaging their communities outside of their business responsibilities, and 44% say their businesses have grown as a result of engaging their communities. The majority of entrepreneurs surveyed stated that their motivations to engage the community centered around personal values and passion.

    The bottom line is that community involvement is the right thing to do. Business owners and entrepreneurs should lead by example, demonstrating a passion and commitment to the well-being of the communities they serve. Amazing benefits will accrue from there.

    Two leading Bay Area nonprofit organizations have launched a partnership to strengthen each of their work. Pairing the expertise of Global Glimpse in education for diverse high school-aged students with CFHI’s expertise in ethical global health programs, their first joint project invites CFHI alumni to accompany Global Glimpse students as Medical Fellows to three Latin American countries.

    Global Glimpse was born out of a need for high-quality global education in the United States. The organization operates on the belief that exposure to different countries, cultures and people provides important perspective and drives young people to take action to better their world together. GG delivers leadership and global education for high-school-aged students through after-school workshops that culminate in a leadership and service learning trip to Nicaragua, Dominican Republic or Ecuador.

    I’m thrilled to join forces with an organization that we have admired for so many years, in particular, their commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse students.

    Child Family Health International is a nonprofit NGO in consultation with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, facilitating rich experiences for students from the U.S. to learn what health systems abroad are doing to provide basic health services and support difficult-to-reach patients. Through ethical, fair-trade partnerships in 10 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, CFHI helps interdisciplinary health students at all levels to develop professionally and engage thoughtfully with communities in the Global South through global health education. CFHI alumni develop unique skills during their programs including an understanding of the social determinants of health and barriers to health access in resource-limited settings; an understanding of the cultural and ethical issues of working and learning within under-served populations; an understanding and commitment to professional behavior while working collaboratively across cultures, and much more.  

    As such, CFHI alumni are perfectly positioned to accompany Global Glimpse programs and help coordinate student wellness during these trips as Medical Fellows, an undertaking that represents the first joint project between the two organizations.
