Supermom In Training: Instilling gratitude in children for #givingtuesday

    [ad_1]

I am grateful. I am soooo grateful. I have a warm and wonderful home, and a partner to share my life with, and I have a beautiful and healthy little boy who literally makes my heart sing every single day. I was thinking about a church homily I heard once about planning for the future but also finding a balance living in the present as well, and taking stock in what you do have in your life. I try to do that every day, numerous times a day. And I want to teach my son gratitude.

That entails being observant. When we’re surrounded by his toys and books and things, we often stop to look around us and pause to see how lucky we are that we have so many toys. I want my son to realize how much we have (and it’s too much, really).

We also look at what’s going on around us, and we talk about how can we help these people in any way possible (we recently gathered loads of clothes and toys for donation). We reflect on our own blessings and, again, how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads, food on the table, etc.

We acknowledge when we receive gifts by writing thank-you cards or even making artwork for the person. My son is quite popular with the church-goers of my parish, and they would frequently pick up little cars and trucks for him. And we would always go home and make them something for the following Sunday to thank them. We’d talk about how nice it was for that person to stop and take time to think about our bean. And I think he genuinely feels lucky to receive these little gifts.

We buy for others, together. If we know it’s someone’s birthday, the bean always helps me choose the gift. Yes, I may encounter the requests to buy him something too, but I’m adamant about not doing so, because he has to learn that we do for others. And he’s usually very good about it.

We stop and thank people. Food vendors and store employees. We hold doors for people. We wave “thank you” when cars let us cross the street. If there’s one way to raise a conscientious, thoughtful child, it’s by teaching gratitude. Every day.

How do you teach your child gratitude?

  • Melany Of MList: Start your holiday shopping now – you won’t regret it

Melany Of MList: Start your holiday shopping now – you won’t regret it

    [ad_1]

The holidays are undoubtedly going to be different this year, and that means holiday shopping will change too. One thing I’m trying to take from this pandemic is figuring out what’s truly important. As we slowly move into the holiday season, let’s remember that these times are not only about materialism and things but also about being grateful for what you have and spending time with those we love, whether it be within our household bubble or virtually.

So, leave the retail stress behind this year and get a headstart on your holiday shopping now! Without the usual holiday rush, you’ll be able to slow down and really enjoy the laid-back attitude of this year’s celebrations. Start your holiday shopping now – you won’t regret it. If you do, you can:

    – Save money. There may be a lot of advertised sales in the weeks leading up to the holidays, but you can still find deals right now. Be sure to keep an eye out for sales and specials around American Thanksgiving too.

    – Find more selection. Stock is going to run low pretty quickly this year, and by buying sooner than later, you’ll be able to get your hands on all those most-requested must-have gifts.

    – Find something from the heart. It’s hard to find a useful, thoughtful present when you leave your shopping till the last-minute. If you begin your hunt for the perfect gifts now, you’ll allow yourself some extra time to really put consideration into your choices.

    – It can lead to getting other to-do’s out of the way. Once you have your shopping done, you can get a headstart on other projects, like wrapping, writing out cards, baking, and more.

    – You’ll have your sanity. Do you find you’re always frazzled in the month of December (like I am)? With present-buying out of the way, you can focus on more important things: you.

Married with three kids, MList’s Melany is a jack-of-all-trades. Not only is she a hardworking mom but she’s a serial saver (she loves her MList Card!), she loves to cook, she is very spiritual, and she is very organized. She is also chronically busy. Get her take on what to see, do and buy in Montreal and beyond.

  • Parenting 101: Here are 3 great ways to give back as a family this holiday season

Parenting 101: Here are 3 great ways to give back as a family this holiday season

    [ad_1]

The holidays are the perfect time to wrangle up your family and friends, and give back. After all, we have all been blessed with so much – it’s important to give back at this time of the year. And with so many local charities and organizations looking for some helping hands, it couldn’t be easier to play Santa’s little helper this season.

Every year, A Canadians Cooking (who does some of our amazing recipes) prints one piece of merch and donates 100% of all the profits to charities. This year they are printing bandanas and donating all the profits to animal rescues. The profits will be divided between Humane Canada, Rosies Animal Adoption, and sauvetage lapins errants. The bandanas are selling for $12 each with the option to round up to $15. The bandanas are printed by a local small business, so the purchasing and work was also given to a local business. If you would like to order, send A Canadians Cooking a direct message on either Facebook or Instagram, or you can email your order to acanadianscooking@gmail.com. Sales will be taking place until January 8th. Also, prizes may be won with each purchase at the end of the initiative.

Elves Filling Shelves is a local West Island initiative started by a family who wanted to help a few other less-fortunate families in their community. “A few” has grown into a lot, and they will be helping more than 50 families this holiday season with food donations, gifts, clothing, and more. They match donor families with families in need and provide a shopping list of things that they need. They also accept donations. It’s a great way to get your own family involved in choosing the items, plus kids really identify with the fact that they are helping someone their own age. We did it last year and it was a tremendous experience.

The Montreal Toy Tea collects toys for children and teens who are staying in battered women’s shelters across the city during the holidays. While in the past this was an in-person event, the last several years it has been virtual. For the 31st edition, they’re back to hosting, and this year it takes place on December 7th at the Royal Montreal Regiment. Children from various schools will perform, snacks and tea will be served, and volunteers will be on-hand to collect the new toys attendees are invited to bring.

Supermom In Training: I’ve reached a new level of exhaustion

    [ad_1]

I’m tired. But not yawn-and-stretch tired. Like numb.

I dunno why. Maybe it’s the change of seasons. Although we’ve had incredibly warm fall weather, I’m feeling blah.

We’ve had a lot of visitors lately, and hockey season keeps us going 3-4 times a week at arenas all around our area. It was Halloween and I (as always) overdo it with the themed food, decorations, etc. I really want to get ahead on my Christmas shopping because I like December to be a month where I can instead focus on all the fun get-togethers and activities rather than frantically shopping. I’m working out my son starting sacrament classes with church. I’m helping take care of my 91-year-old grandfather. I volunteer at my son’s school one morning a week and have been helping with book repairs at home. I’ve got an energetic pup who needs his exercise and attention. My husband works different shifts at all hours of the day and night, so I’m the one keeping everything organized and going at home. There’s a lot of meal prep and lunch-making. Oh, and I have this thing where I work full-time too.

And I feel burnt. I’m sick of grocery shopping and making the same boring meals for lunch and dinner, but I don’t have the “oomph” to come up with anything “different” at the moment. I have passion projects like book writing and podcasting on the back burner because I don’t have the creative juice for them by the end of the day. I’ll realize I haven’t chatted with a close friend in weeks because the days are rushing by in monotony.

I know I’m not the only one. In fact, I’d venture a guess that almost every parent reading this could also write a paragraph-long rant about all the balls they’re juggling simultaneously like me. But it feels good to let it out. Cathartic.

How are you doing? Need to rant for a minute? Rant away in the comments… I’m listening.

  • Dairy farmers petition for more visa workers through the Farm Workforce Modernization Act; opponents call Act extreme amnesty bill

Dairy farmers petition for more visa workers through the Farm Workforce Modernization Act; opponents call Act extreme amnesty bill

    [ad_1]

MONROE (WKOW) — Wisconsin’s dairy farmers are calling on the U.S. Senate to pass the Farm Workforce Modernization Act; it was already approved by the House of Representatives in 2021.

Proponents say this bill would streamline citizenship for migrant visa workers and lower food prices, but opponents say this is an extreme amnesty bill.

Wisconsin’s agricultural industry generates over 104 billion dollars a year. Nearly half of that, 45 billion, comes from the dairy industry and a worker shortage is threatening America’s Dairyland.

“Farmers are being forced to go out of business because they don’t have the help they need on the farm,” said Mykel Bickham, Associate Director of Government Affairs with Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative.

So dairy farmers are calling on the Senate to pass the Farm Workforce Modernization Act allowing them to hire H-2a visa workers. Proponents like Bickham said would keep dairy production consistent and lessen the pressure on consumer wallets.

“It has a huge impact on your grocery store shelves. It also has an impact on inflation,” said Bickham.

The problem is the dairy industry is excluded from the H-2a visa program and dairy farmers say this is hurting their business.

“Getting people to fill different positions, whether we’re talking milking cows or feeding animals. I think is a huge issue,” said Dan Wegmueller with Wegmueller Dairy Farm & “The Dairy” Farm Stay.”

“As input costs continue to go up and it’s tougher for farmers to get their products out onto the market and harvested. Those prices do go up on the grocery store shelves,” Bickham said.

A Texas A&M study links more H-2A workers with lower inflation and consumer prices.

Some key findings of that report:

    1. More migrant and H-2A workers are associated with lower inflation
    2. More denied naturalization petitions are associated with larger consumer prices and higher inflation

Opponents like Daren Bakst, an expert with the Heritage Foundation, described the Farm Workforce Modernization Act as an amnesty bill for illegal workers with short-term benefits for farmers. He said workers who get this H-2A visa will almost certainly move off the farm. In his full statement, Bakst said:

“This is an amnesty bill for agricultural workers who are illegally in the country. And the bill makes no pretense otherwise. The legislation gives a special pathway to citizenship for illegal workers, with some workers being able to get a green card in as little as four years. To stress, it isn’t giving these illegal workers a way to become a part of the H-2A guest worker program, but instead, it goes way beyond that and creates a pathway to citizenship. It allows illegal aliens to stay in the country while they are provided an easy pathway to citizenship, rewarding lawbreakers and punishing legal aliens who abide by the rules to become citizens.

For those saying it will help farmers, at best it would provide a short-term benefit to farmers who have employed illegal workers. Many of the illegal agricultural workers who get this new pathway will almost certainly move off the farm. That movement away from the farm is precisely what happened when the United States granted amnesty to more than 1 million agricultural workers in 1986.

It’s one thing for Congress to reform legal pathways, but it’s quite another to reward illegal agricultural workers and agricultural employers who have ignored the law altogether.

When considering immigration in agriculture, it isn’t a binary choice between doing nothing and creating this extreme amnesty bill. There should be a thoughtful dialogue regarding how to improve the legal immigration system without simultaneously undermining its legitimacy.”

The Farm Workforce Modernization Act is still pending in the U.S. Senate; whether or not the Senate will vote on this act remains uncertain.

This act would cap worker visas at 20,000 and dairy farmers want that cap lifted, which is one reason this act is stalled.

  • Parenting 101: Back to school organizing tools

Parenting 101: Back to school organizing tools

    [ad_1]

Whether “back to school” is in your family’s vocabulary or not, September often rhymes with back to regularly scheduled programming for most families. It also tends to be a time when customers and friends like to pick my brain about my best tips on how to get organized for as smooth a return to routine as possible. So, I thought I would share three of my favourite things that keep our family of five organized!

1 – Homework station: Whether it be ensuring homework gets done or keeping your toddler busy while you (try to) prepare dinner, it’s a great idea to have a dedicated area to house the supplies you need to keep your little people occupied!

After using the corner of a kitchen counter for a couple of years it became obvious that clutter always resulted, no matter what system I tried. No magazine rack, mason jar or binder could keep clutter at bay!  Then (insert angels singing) the IKEA RASKOG cart came into my life! Three levels. Nice design. This cart is awesome. We put our family binder, school workbooks used at home, one mason jar filled with homework supplies per child (sharpened pencils, erasers, red markers, rulers, etc), music books for the family’s resident violinist, etc. When homework comes around, each child takes his mason jar and sits down to do their homeowork. We always know where to find our stuff now, and it even looks stylish!

We also keep busy bags and other activities for the youngest member of our family. Our 4-year-old has special needs, so kinetic sands and other activities are a great way to keep him busy and help him develop better motor skills.  The cart is the perfect spot to hold all of this and any other activities to give me a few minutes of uninterrupted time to cut those vegetables. It also makes him feel like he’s doing his homework just like the big kids!

2 – Label maker: I used to think label makers were limited to office use only, but now I couldn’t live without them at home!

At the beginning of the school year I always order personnalized labels for each of my children, but there are always particular items that need their own special label. For example, for lunch containers, at our kids’ school, each container needs to be labeled with the child’s grade level, on top of which child it belongs to. Enter the label-maker. Surprisingly, they withstand quite a few washes before having to print a new one! It’s also great to label bins of outgrown clothes for the next child who uses them, or to label the files of memorabilia you’ll want to keep from each school year. I’m a big fan of the P-Touch, and always recommend that my friends buy their tape refills from Amazon. They are amazingly cheaper than in stores!

3 – Lunch containers with compartments: Did anyone prepare you for the daunting task of school lunches?  I mean seriously. If preparing lunches wasn’t enough, you also have to factor in washing all those containers into your agenda… So, the magic of lunch containers with compartments is significant. You can transform six parts to be washed into just two. Think about it! Say you save two minutes washing, drying and putting away these containers. That’s six hours per year… or roughly six episodes of Game of Thrones. Priorities…

So, game on! It’s a busy time of year, but integrating organizing solutions is so worth it! You’ll gain so much time in the long run!

While we’re on this topic, what are your favourite organizing tools related to back-to-school?

Mylène Houle Morency is a Professional Organizer, speaker, and owner of FLO Organisation, which specializes in organizing families with children ranging from newborn to the teenage years. She has the firm conviction that organized homes help parents become the parents they want to be, by freeing up time and diminishing stress. She has the privilege to lovingly test all her theories and organization inspirations on her husband and three children!

Parenting 101: 4 Great back-to-school products to start your school year off right

    [ad_1]

It’s hard to get back into the swing of things when school is back in session. Here are 5 great back-to-school products to start your school year off right.

IKEA Canada has some great products to help your whole family stay organized. Their solid oak hooks paired with a great pegboard, a few storage stools, and some mismatches storage baskets can turn an entryway into a functional place to keep school essentials.

If your child will be riding their way to school, make sure they’re protected and safe. The Raskullz Child Bolt LED Multisport Helmet has two light modes as well as an auto shut-off.

Streamline morning routines and post-school handwashing with Moen’s MotionSense Wave touchless technology. This unique fixture features a single sensor on the faucet base that provides hands-free control, so you can turn water on and off with just the wave of a hand.

Kids always need a second set of running shoes to leave at school, and Skechers are a reliable brand for kicks that will withstand all the wear and tear of a school year. For boys, check out their Game Kicks: Gametron runners – they come in two colours and are made from lightweight mesh with an air-cooled memory foam insole. For the little ladies, I love their Unicorn Dreams shoe, which are laceless, lightweight, cushioned, and they even light up!
