    It’s A Brat Green Summer: What’s The Appeal Of The Hue?

    It’s very nearly lime green, though it has less blue and a little more yellow than a traditional lime, which leans closer to emerald (Brat skips up to apple). It’s a slightly updated chartreuse, almost the color of the famous liquor, but with a heavy saturation that marks it as far more modern than the version that blew up in the late 1800s (and again in the 1920s, 1960s, and 1990s). It’s not quite an absinthe green or a pickle green, but it is close. It lacks the depth of those vintage greens, which gain dimension from a touch of ochre, but that’s exactly why we like Brat Green. It is not a complex color, nor is it intended to be. Like the slime green made famous by Nickelodeon, Brat Green is pushy and straightforward. It’s supposed to be brilliant, intense, and rich without being mistaken for tasteful. There’s a flatness to brat green that makes it well suited to black light dance parties, color field paintings, and online life (see the various social media memes the color spawned even before Harris’ “Brat-ification”). In particular, the digital nature of brat green shows when you open up a messaging app and text your friends — it’s right there, in Apple’s lime green chat icon with its little white bubble. It’s also just a whisper away from Spotify green, something I doubt is accidental.

    Whether you’re a Formula One fan or somehow only realized today that you follow a lot of drivers on social media, then you’ve probably already seen some of the thousands of graphics and memes about Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave his team of 11 years in Mercedes at the end of 2024 and join Scuderia Ferrari, F1’s most successful team and the one with the scarlet-red car.

    Suffice it to say, there have been tears—both happy ones and not-so-happy ones—on all sides of the move, which was announced on Thursday. Hamilton’s fans are nothing if not loyal and aplenty—the driver, fashion designer, musician, and more has amassed over 35 million Instagram followers. Come 2025, Ferrari should expect a massive influx of fans, all of whom will be expected to wear the team’s iconic color. With that in mind, I thought I’d use some of my pent-up energy to, instead of refreshing F1 Twitter every five seconds, do what I do best: shop.     Despite the “quiet luxury” movement of 2023, the major color trends of our time are quite bold—think kelly green, Barbie pink, and the most recent: red.     Ask any fashion person what the color of the S/S 24 season is and they’ll likely give you a quick answer: burgundy (or oxblood, wine, claret, dark red—whatever you want to call it). It’s the color that everyone has been talking about after new Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno made it the star of his first collection. We already pointed out that burgundy shoes are coming for your closet when Jennifer Lopez recently wore a pair, and now Kendall Jenner has proven that burgundy bags are following in their footsteps (no pun intended).

    While running errands last week in L.A., Jenner paired a burgundy The Row tote with an oversized bomber jacket, white T-shirt, jeans, and Onitsuka Tiger sneakers.     The spring 2024 runway collections were stocked full of trends, from sophisticated takes on sheer to dramatically overstuffed handbags, but out of all of them, none made quite as impactful of a splash as oxblood (otherwise known as black cherry, merlot, or burgundy), the shade of red on every fashion person’s lips (and in their closets) right now.     “Sad beige” is the quietest and least exciting fashion revolution we’ve experienced to date. I have a theory that it not only affects aesthetics but also the way we feel as a society. I totally get the allure, however, since it’s so easy to reliably create simple and chic looks when your closet is made of whites, tans, and neutrals that all go together so seamlessly. But where’s the inspiration?! The emotion, the gall, the passion, the attitude? Can you really access all the emotions when you’re in beige every day? I think not. This is why I’ve officially taken a stand against the sad beige revolution and am on strike by dressing colorfully as much as possible. 

    Some things I’ve learned so far: Stick to fairly simple silhouettes to not overwhelm the outfit with too many standout elements, try to think of yourself as a canvas and the clothing the paint (color theory is everything), and play with all color tones. Don’t let anyone tell you that you must wear bright colors or it doesn’t count. There are plenty of muted colors that work together beautifully.

    As someone who works in fashion, I love trends—especially color trends. They’re just so easy to incorporate into your wardrobe and they can be in the form of something as minor as a pair of socks or as major as a coat. You can wear color trends head-to-toe or just a splash. The possibilities are endless. 

    As I’m sure you’re aware, 2023 has been all about red. That’s still very much the case, but now there’s another color trend threatening to steal some of its thunder, and it even looks more expensive than red. That color is chocolate brown. The hue that in the past might’ve been considered “ugly” or “boring” is now one of the most sought-after colors of the season. As evidence, I’ve noticed lately that 90% of the time when an item comes in multiple colors, and chocolate brown is one of them, it’s sold out. Celebrities and fashion people have been wearing it as much as they wear camel and black all of a sudden.

    All signs are pointing to chocolate brown being the most lavish-looking color trend of the season. And I have no problem investing in it, as it’s timeless and versatile to boot.     One of the most highly anticipated films of the season, Poor Things, opened this week with Emma Stone at its helm. We actually don’t get to see Emma Stone‘s outfits on a regular basis, so it’s always a treat when she’s promoting something. Stone has been out and about in NYC as of late, wearing a plethora of cool, trend-forward looks. One of those looks provided a styling tip that I recommend taking with you this season.

    For a screening of Poor Things earlier this week, Stone wore a camel-colored Kenzo jacket and miniskirt with suede knee boots in a similar hue and a tan Louis Vuitton bag. Camel has long held the distinction of being the most expensive-looking color, but there’s another expensive-looking color trend in town: chocolate brown. Because two expensive-looking colors are better than one, Stone topped her camel outfit off with a toggle-button chocolate-brown coat.     In the last few years, I’ve had to rewire the entire part of my brain that’s dealt with colors, specifically, the art of combining them. Growing up, there were so many pairings that fashion made out to be undesirable if only because they clashed. Wearing them together was as much a sartorial sin as wearing white after Labor Day (another rule I’ve since thrown out). But nowadays, those once-forbidden combinations are the exact ones I’m drawn to most, from neutrals like brown and gray to bolder duets like purple and green. 

    Now that I’ve given up every last morsel of trained disdain for unexpected or clashing color pairings, I’m much more open to them, so when I see them on the runways or in my Instagram feed, I don’t look away but rather save them for later inspiration. I want to wear red with gold, brown, and gray, but I’m also not scared to style the trending color with even louder shades like pink.     As you know, red is the color of the season—maybe even the year. And I’d be remiss not to point out some commonalities with how people are wearing the It color. And the fact of the matter is, it may seem like stating the obvious, but somebody’s gotta do it.

    My Instagram feed is currently filled with crimson outfits. Some are head-to-toe but most contain just splashes of red—whether in the form of a sweater, a pair of shoes, a bag, and so on. And more often than not, those red splashes are paired with one of two “boring” colors: gray or black. Groundbreaking, right? The thing that is interesting is that wearing gray or black ultimately allows red to shine. Nothing is competing with it for attention.     Living in New York City, I have a front-row seat to some of the world’s best dressers.     As much as I like to indulge in at least one pumpkin-spice beverage per year—not when fall “officially” starts (aka September 23rd) but when you can actually feel it in your bones—I don’t particularly enjoy wearing the color. Some people can pull off burnt orange. I’m not one of them. Fortunately, Dani Michelle, the stylist behind Kendall Jenner, Bruna Marquezine, and Hailey Bieber’s lusted-over street style looks, has a new color on her mind for fall that’s both delicious visually as well as in taste.

    “Espresso fall” was all that Michelle captioned on a street-style photo of Bieber heading into Kim Kardashian’s 43rd birthday party at Funke in Los Angeles. In the image, the model and Rhode founder can be seen wearing various shades of espresso, from a light-roast, suede Prada blazer from the F/W ’23 collection to a medium-roast, leather Zeynep Arçay miniskirt. On her feet are a pair of burgundy Gucci slingback kitten heels from the brand’s first collection with its new creative director Sabato de Sarno, while a matching Saint Laurent 5 À 7 bag rests on her shoulder. And to top it all off, gold Khaite studs were added, as well as her new signature Alex Moss diamond “B” bubble necklace.
