A Durham Academy alumna was one of nine people wounded during a mass shooting at Brown University this weekend.
“We were saddened to learn that Kendall Turner ‘25, a beloved Durham Academy alumna, was wounded in the mass shooting that occurred at Brown University yesterday,” said Michael Ulku-Steiner, who leads the Durham private school that serves children from preschool to 12th grade. “Her family has informed us that she is currently in critical but stable condition and is receiving care at a local hospital. Her parents are with her. We hope for her continued strength and recovery.”
The mass shooting occurred Saturday afternoon during final exams at Brown University, killing two students and wounding nine others, according to the Associated Press. A person of interest was in custody on Sunday.
Durham Academy is rallying around Turner, Ulku-Steiner said to The News & Observer on Sunday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Kendall, her family, and all members of the Brown University community during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. “Our school community is rallying around Kendall, her classmates, and her loved ones, and we will continue to offer our full support in the days ahead.”
Leslie Traba, Durham Academy’s director of marketing and communication, confirmed seven other alumni enrolled at Brown are safe and uninjured.
