  • Zvada’s 31-yard field goal as time expires lifts No. 18 Michigan over Northwestern 24-22

    CHICAGO — CHICAGO (AP) — Dominic Zvada kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired, Jordan Marshall ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns before exiting with an injury and No. 18 Michigan stayed in the playoff chase by beating Northwestern 24-22 at Wrigley Field on Saturday.

    The Wolverines (8-2, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 18 CFP) overcame three late turnovers, including two interceptions by Bryce Underwood, and remained in the running for the College Football Playoff with their fourth straight win. Northwestern (5-5, 3-4) lost its third in a row.

    Zvada’s boot capped a 50-yard drive and set off a celebration on the field and in the stands, where a large part of the crowd wore maize and blue.

    Michigan was up 21-9 when the Wildcats’ Preston Stone plowed in from the 1 two minutes into the fourth quarter.

    Michigan then had a third down at its 26 when Braden Turner picked off a pass intended for Deakon Tonielli and returned it to the 6. Caleb Komolafe ran it in on the next play, giving Northwestern at 22-21 lead with 12:05 remaining in the game. The 2-point conversion pass failed.

    Michigan then drove to the 30 before Underwood got picked off again, this time by Robert Fitzgerald at the 20. The Wolverines had another opportunity after Northwestern punted, only to give it away again after opting not to go for the field goal. They had a fourth-and-1 at the Wildcats’ 24 when Bryson Kuzdzal fumbled the handoff and Northwestern recovered.

    Marshall had another big outing with Justice Haynes missing his second consecutive game because of a right foot injury. After setting career highs with 185 yards rushing and three touchdowns in a narrow win against Purdue two weeks ago, he scored from the 1 early in the second quarter to give Michigan a 7-0 lead.

    Underwood, coming off shaky performances in wins over Michigan State and Purdue, completed 21 of 32 passes for 280 yards against a defense that began the day ranked 22nd in the nation against the pass. He also ran for a touchdown.

    Freshman Andrew Marsh set career highs with 12 receptions for 189 yards, and the Wolverines beat Northwestern for the 14th time in the past 15 meetings.

    Stone was 13 of 27 for 184 yards.

    Hunter Welcing had 81 yards receiving, and the Wildcats dropped their 14th straight against Top 25 teams.

    Northwestern also fell to 0-7 all-time at Wrigley Field. Six of those losses have come since 2010, when college football returned to the famed ballpark after more than a seven-decade absence.

    Michigan: The Wildcats remained on course to make the College Football Playoff, no easy task with No. 1 Ohio State visiting on Nov. 29.

    Northwestern: The Wildcats have two more opportunities to become bowl-eligible for the second time in coach David Braun’s three seasons. They host Minnesota at Wrigley next week before visiting Illinois in the finale.

    Michigan: Visits Maryland on Nov. 22.

    Northwestern: Hosts Minnesota at Wrigley Field on Nov. 22.

Gio Lopez finished 18-of-25 for 203 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Jordan Shipp, who had five catches for 83 yards, and Davion Gause. The defense stepped up with nine sacks and forced two turnovers, with Melkart Abou Jaoude and Tyler Thompson each logging three sacks and Andrew Simpson getting two.

    Wake Forest got two scores late in the first half to take a 10-6 lead and held off then-No. 14 Virginia for a 16-9 road win last week. Carlos Hernandez had the game’s only touchdown on an 88-yard punt return with 1:33 left in the second quarter before the Demon Deacons recovered a fumble to set up Connor Calvert’s 39-yard field goal less than a minute later. Calvert later converted from 50 and 49 yards in the second half. Demond Claiborne ran for 75 tough yards on 25 carries, and Dylan Hazen forced a fumble and recovered two while logging seven tackles.

    The Tar Heels have won the last four meetings with Wake Forest, including a 31-24 win at home last season, and hold a 73-36-2 lead in an all-time series that dates to 1888.

  • LSU Makes Final Decision on QB Garrett Nussmeier Before Arkansas Game

    Hours before kickoff on Saturday, LSU announced a massive change under center: sophomore transfer Michael Van Buren Jr. will get his first start of the season against Arkansas, replacing senior Garrett Nussmeier, per On3’s Pete Nakos.

    Nussmeier was first listed as questionable after a string of restricted practice sessions due to an abdominal issue, before being downgraded on Friday night.

    Van Buren has appeared in three games this year, completing 66.7% of his passes for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, along with 24 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

    LSU has alternated looks in recent weeks, and with the season already off course, the staff appears willing to pivot.

    The move hands the Tigers’ offense to a young, dual-threat QB who has shown flashes in relief but not yet been tested as LSU’s full-time starter.

    Since arriving in 2021, Nussmeier has completed 64% of his passes for 7,699 yards and 52 touchdowns across his career, including a breakout 2024 campaign in which he threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns with a 142.7 passer rating.

    Through Week 12 of this season, however, he has just 1,927 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 67.4% completion rate — efficient overall but inconsistent in key moments.

    Van Buren transferred to LSU after starting eight games as a true freshman at Mississippi State in the 2024 college football season, when he threw for 1,886 yards and 11 TDs and added five rushing TDs.

    A polished four-star high-school recruit from St. Frances Academy, Van Buren shows added explosiveness outside of the pocket. He has also already logged two 300-yard outings in his college career, including a 309-yard effort versus Arkansas on Oct. 26, 2024, with two scores, two picks, and a 71% completion rate.

    Arkansas arrives in Baton Rouge with a 2-7 record but an offense capable of bursts; dropped 35 points on Ole Miss on Sept. 13, 31 points versus Tennessee on Oct. 11, and 42 points against Texas A&M on Oct. 18.

    The Razorbacks also have undergone coaching upheaval this season, and their defense has shown soft spots that a quicker, more improvisational quarterback could exploit.

    If Van Buren can protect the football and sustain drives, the Tigers could stabilize offensively and claw back momentum in a season most fans would prefer to put behind them.

  • Lacy helps No. 6 Ole Miss rally past Florida for 34-24 win

    OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Kewan Lacy rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score on the first play of the fourth quarter, and No. 6 Mississippi rallied past Florida 34-24 on Saturday night.

    The Rebels (10-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference, No. 7 CFP) finally put the Gators away with 1:43 left on Lacy’s 31st and final carry, a 4-yard touchdown. Ole Miss took over on downs after Florida went for it on fourth-and-9 at its own 4, and Sage Ryan broke up D.J. Lagway’s desperation heave at midfield.

    As coach Lane Kiffin’s squad took a knee in the final minute, Ole Miss fans chanted “We want Lane!” in a bid to persuade their sought-after coach not to bolt for another school — possibly Florida. And Lacy celebrated with a postgame slam dunk on a portable basketball goal at midfield.

    The Rebels have won at least 10 games in four of the past five seasons, including three straight, and this victory solidified their chances to make the College Football Playoff.

    Florida (3-7, 2-5) has lost 20 consecutive games away from Gainesville against ranked opponents since beating Georgia in 2020 in Jacksonville, Florida. That streak will extend to 2026 since the Gators’ final two games are at home.

    The Gators certainly had their chances. They led 24-20 at halftime, and Ole Miss came up empty twice at the goal line in the second half, with Trinidad Chambliss throwing incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the 1 in the third quarter and on fourth-and-goal at the 3 in the fourth.

    Chambliss still had a productive night, going 26 of 35 for 301 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked five times, including twice by Jaden Robinson.

    Ole Miss finished with 538 yards of total offense, while the Rebels’ defense held the Gators scoreless with only 103 offensive yards in the second half.

    In the first half, Lagway ran for a 5-yard touchdown, Jadan Baugh scored on a 2-yard run following Jayden Woods’ interception, and Lagway connected with J. Michael Sturdivant for a 57-yard TD pass.

    Chambliss threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to De’Zhaun Stribing and Lacy ran for a 3-yard score, but Ole Miss failed to score touchdowns on two red-zone drives, with Lucas Carniero converting on field goals of 27 and 23 yards.

    Lagway was 16 of 31 for 218 yards but threw a fourth-quarter interception on a tipped ball to Wydett Willliams on Florida’s only series in Ole Miss territory.

    The takeaway

    Florida: The Gators’ tailspin continued as they were eliminated from contention for a bowl appearance. Florida was more engaged than during last week’s collapse at Kentucky, but interim coach Billy Gonzales’ squad couldn’t pull off the upset. The Gators’ pursuit of Kiffin gets more interesting each week.

    Ole Miss: The Rebels finished 8-0 at home and enhanced their hopes of hosting an opening-round game in the CFP. Kiffin will remain a high-profile candidate for vacancies in the Power Four and even in the NFL.

    Poll implications

    Avoiding an upset keeps Ole Miss in an elite group of five teams in the top 10 with one loss or fewer. The Rebels could move into the top five after No. 4 Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma.

  • Dante Moore throws for 2 touchdowns and No. 7 Oregon routs Minnesota 42-13

    EUGENE, Ore. — Dante Moore threw for two touchdowns and freshman Jordon Davison ran for another pair to lead No. 7 Oregon to a 42-13 victory over Minnesota on Friday night.

    Moore was 27 of 30 for 306 yards for the Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 8 CFP). Davison ran for 57 yards on seven carries. Kenyon Sadiq caught eight passes for 96 yards and another score.

    Minnesota (6-4, 4-3) remained winless on the road this season. The Golden Gophers managed just 62 yards rushing against the Ducks, who went into the game ranked third in the nation in total defense.

    Oregon scored on its first series of the game. Moore completed a 23-yard pass to Sadiq to get the Ducks close, then they capped the drive with Davison’s 1-yard touchdown run.

    Sadiq returned after missing last weekend’s 18-16 victory at Iowa, but Oregon was still without freshman receiver Dakorien Moore because of a knee injury. Oregon was also missing receiver Gary Bryant Jr., who injured his foot during the first quarter last weekend.

    The Ducks made it 14-0 on Davison’s 39-yard touchdown run before Brady Denaburg’s 46-yard field goal got Minnesota on the scoreboard early in the second quarter.

    Noah Whittington broke through a pile of of players then bobbled the ball in the end zone after a 40-yard dash, but it was ruled a touchdown after a review and Oregon went up 21-3.

    After Denaburg added a 26-yard field goal for the Gophers, Dante Moore hit Sadiq with a short 3-yard pass to put the Ducks up 28-6 at halftime.

    The Gophers scored on their first drive of the second half on Drake Lindsey’s 10-yard scoring pass to Javon Tracy. Lindsey finished with 138 yards passing.

    Moore threw a 13-yard pass to Jeremiah McClellan, who was ruled on review to have a toe inbounds for the touchdown, to make it 35-13. The Ducks added another score on Jay Harris’ 12-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

    Minnesota was coming off a bye. The Gophers’ last outing was a 23-20 overtime win at home over Michigan State that made them bowl eligible.

    After having to stage the comeback win at No. 20 Iowa in poor conditions last weekend, the Ducks had little trouble against the Gophers at home in mild temperatures. While it may not be enough to move the Ducks much in the CFP rankings, a bigger test lies ahead next weekend with USC, which is No. 17 in both the AP Top 25 and the CFP.

    Minnesota visits Northwestern next Saturday.

    The Ducks host Southern California next Saturday.

  • USF loses ground in AAC championship game bid in loss to Navy 41-38

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Eli Heidenreich caught five passes for 146 yards and became Navy’s all-time receiving yards leader, quarterback Braxton Woodson ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter in relief of Blake Horvath and the Midshipmen defeated South Florida 41-38 on Saturday.

    Alex Tecza carried 12 times for 126 yards, including an early 76-yard score, and caught Horvath’s lone touchdown pass as Navy (8-2, 6-1 American Athletic Conference) secured a half-game lead in the conference.

    Heidenreich has 1,794 career receiving yards and moved past Rob Thompson’s 1,736, compiled from 1965-67.

    Byrum Brown threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 136 yards and two more scores for South Florida (7-3, 4-2), which scored 22 points in the fourth quarter yet lost its second consecutive road game. The Bulls also lost ground in their bid to reach the conference championship game.

    After Heidenreich earlier career-long 82-yard catch from Horvath set up Brandon Chatman’s 4-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3 at the end of the first quarter, his 32-yard catch from Woodson was a crucial moment during an eight-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended with Woodson’s 20-yard scoring run to make it 34-24.

    On Navy’s next possession, Woodson ran 64 yards for the Midshipmen’s third play of 60 or more yards to make it 41-30.

    The takeaway

    After another big home win put the Bulls back in the Top 25 for the fifth time this season, South Florida may fall back.

    To quote Homer Simpson, woo-hoo! Our corporate overlords are finally getting along. Disney and YouTube TV have squashed their carriage beef, signing a deal to bring all your favorite ESPN, ABC, and Disney properties back to YouTube’s streamer. Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro praised the deal in a joint statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “We are pleased that our networks have been restored in time for fans to enjoy the many great programming options this weekend, including college football,” they wrote. “Subscribers should see channels including ABC, ESPN and FX returning to their service over the course of the day, as well as any recordings that were previously in their Library,” a spokesperson for YouTube said Friday night. “We apologize for the disruption and appreciate our subscribers’ patience as we negotiated on their behalf.”

    Disney’s channels — including ABC, ESPN, Freeform, and FX — went dark on YouTube TV October 30. It was the longest carriage dispute in recent memory, far exceeding the Charter Communications tiff in 2023. That only lasted 11 days. Reports found that this dispute was particularly bitter, with CEOs Bob Iger (Disney) and Sundar Pichai (Google) allegedly brought in to speed things along. It’s times like these one yearns for an old school antenna.

  • Feeney football family has star QBs at St. John’s University, Moorhead High School

    Fall is deepening in Minnesota. Football seasons are heating up.

    “It’s a fun time of year when playoff football is hitting and the leaves are changing and all that,” said Trey Feeney, the quarterback for St. John’s University.

    For Feeney, it’s a refreshing time. After three years as a reserve at North Dakota, he’s now the starting QB for the Johnnies.

    “It had been almost since high school I was in the routine of starting every week,” he said. “It’s a rhythm thing. It’s like in basketball if you’re shooting the ball well, you could say you’re on fire. It really feels like I’ve gotten into a rhythm, gotten into a good connection with some of the receivers, running backs, tight ends.”

    Feeney has been putting up big numbers for the Johnnies of late, since taking over the full-time quarterback job.

    Growing up, the Feeney household was a football fortress. Trey’s dad Kevin was a star quarterback at NDSU, then became Trey’s coach and is still the head football coach at Moorhead High School.

    “Picking his brain on experiences,” remembered Trey Feeney. “Like, ‘Hey dad, what was your coolest game or coolest atmosphere you got to play in?’ Just the little things, honestly.”

    “Thankfully, I’m a few inches taller than him. Thank the good lord for that one,” laughed Trey Feeney. “We still do sometimes, over holidays, pull out the old tapes. But we have to get out the DVD players. It’s old school.”

    Trey Feeney’s little brother Jett probably has never heard of the iPod. He’s a high school junior and already one of the top passers in the state.

    “He would ask me questions like, ‘Hey, on this one, my footwork was kinda off,’ or, ‘What should I do here?”’So yeah, he was a very curious kid and it’s paying off for him,” said Trey Feeney.

    Jett Feeney was injured in week two and missed five games. But now he’s back and has led Moorhead to this week’s state tournament semifinals.

    “That’s where I know it was tough for my dad and my brother when he got hurt,” said Trey Feeney. “Because my brother’s in my dad’s ear every day like, ‘Dad, I’m good, I’m good. I can play.’ And my dad knows that he’s got a lot of football left ahead of him.”

    The Johnnies are gearing up for their annual playoff push. The Spuds are taking aim at a Prep Bowl. Trey Feeney will watch his dad and brother at state on Friday night, then play his regular season finale up in Collegeville on Saturday afternoon.

    “It is super special. St. John’s, the location has obviously been another great thing about this place because I’m kind of in the middle of the Cities and Moorhead. I’ve been able to make some of my dad and brother’s high school games,” said Trey Feeney. “It’s a really special area and I know, I’m just trying to take it day by day because I know it goes fast.”

  • Treatment center says FSU’s Pritchard has completed ‘intensive rehabilitation’

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida State freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard is ready to move “onto the next stage of his recovery” after completing 34 days of intensive rehabilitation, Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville posted on Facebook Thursday.

    Pritchard was shot in the back of the head on Aug. 31 in what investigators say was a case of mistaken identity.

    Four people were arrested in connection with the shooting. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass said at the time of the shooting that Pritchard was “not doing anything wrong” when he was ambushed outside an apartment complex. He added that Pritchard was dropping off an aunt and a child at the time of the shooting.

    Pritchard was moved from the hospital to Brooks Rehabilitation on Oct. 9, where he had been undergoing treatment before Thursday’s announcement. 

    While Brooks Rehabilitation said in its post Thursday that Pritchard was moving onto the next phase of his recovery, no information was immediately released on what that might entail.

    A video attached to the announcement shows Pritchard being applauded by flanking rows of staff members as he uses an electric wheelchair to exit the facility.

  • Ohio State stays on top of playoff bracket, while Miami makes a big move

    Not surprisingly, Ohio State stayed at the top of the rankings, and there was a healthy debate about whether last weekend’s action warranted keeping Indiana at No. 2, one spot ahead of Texas A&M.

    But while those top three remained the same in the Week 2 rankings released Tuesday, it was a game back in August that led the College Football Playoff selection committee to its biggest shakeup.

    The committee vaulted Miami to No. 15, one spot ahead of Georgia Tech, to hand the ‘Canes the Atlantic Coast Conference’s only spot in this week’s projected bracket.

    That decision came not so much on the strength of last weekend’s action, — when Miami easily handled Syracuse and Georgia Tech was idle — but rather, thanks to Miami’s season-opening win against Notre Dame.

    “Certainly, the win versus Notre Dame was a key factor for placing Miami ahead of Georgia Tech,” committee chair Mack Rhoades explained. “In general, with the ACC, I think their lack of nonconference signature wins other than Miami over Notre Dame” hurts the conference.

    Following the trio of undefeateds — Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M — were Alabama and Georgia, who rounded out the same top five as in last week’s season-opening rankings.

    Texas Tech jumped two spots to No. 6 on the strength of its win over BYU, moving one notch ahead of Mississippi, which dropped to 7 despite a romp over Citadel in a nonconference game.

    At No. 8 was Oregon, followed by Notre Dame and Texas.

    No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 12 BYU would be the first two teams out in this week’s bracket due to the automatic spots handed to the ACC (Miami) and the highest-ranked league leader out of the Group of 5 conferences, which is now an honor that belongs to South Florida, ranked at No. 24.

    “They’ve always been part of (the conversation),” Rhoades said of the Bulls. “South Florida is the most consistent of the Group of 5, to date.”

    The final bracket comes out Dec. 7, with the 12-team playoff beginning Dec. 19 and closing a month later with the title game.

    Indiana-A&M and Texas Tech-Ole Miss are two toughest calls

    Rhoades said the decision to keep Indiana at No. 2 over Texas A&M provoked the committee’s second-longest conversation.

    The Hoosiers needed last-second heroics to win at Penn State, while the Aggies got a romp on the road at Missouri.

    “Certainly, discussion about those two games, but also discussion about body of work,” Rhoades said. “There was conversation about Missouri. Missouri is a really good team but not the team they’ve been,” due to injuries at quarterback.

    The longest conversation involved moving Texas Tech a spot past Ole Miss.

    “Texas Tech’s win this last weekend — really convincing,” Rhoades said.

    Conference watch

    ACC: Of the five teams in the conference ranked 15-22, maybe No. 22 Pitt is the team to watch. The Panthers have a 7-2 record with games against Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Miami the next three weeks. Winning any two of those might give them a chance at somehow getting into the bracket.

    Big Ten: Outside of the top three, there are no sure things. No. 18 Michigan would work its way into the conversation with a win over you-know-who at the end of the month, and No. 17 USC has a season-making game at Oregon on Nov. 22.

    Big 12: There’s Texas Tech. And then there’s BYU (8-1). And then there’s No. 13 Utah (7-2), the team the Cougars beat last month and seem destined to stay ahead of if they finish with one loss and the Utes finish with two. Only two — and perhaps only one — will make it.

    SEC: No wonder the conference wants to do away with automatic qualifiers. A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi feel like locks. Texas, Oklahoma and No. 14 Vanderbilt all control their own destiny. (Especially OU, which is at Alabama this week.)

    Group of 5: With early wins over Boise State and Florida, South Florida looked like a good bet to earn that fifth conference-champion slot earlier in the season, and reclaimed the position after Memphis lost to Tulane last week.

    The projected first-round matchups

    No. 12 South Florida at No. 5 Georgia: How many teams have won at the Swamp and between the hedges in the same year … or ever?

  • USF makes its debut on college playoff bracket

    TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida’s latest football milestone made its debut Tuesday night when the Bulls were included in the College Football Playoff bracket.

    USF, at 7-2, came in at No. 12 in the bracket, representing the American Athletic Conference and the highest regarded Group of 5 team.

    The final bracket will be released Dec. 7. Playoff games start Dec. 19 at campus locations.

    That gives the Bulls (7-2, 4-1) a few weeks to solidify their position, starting with Saturday’s game at Navy (7-2, 5-1). USF also has contests remaining with AAC bottom dwellers Alabama-Birmingham and Rice before a potential AAC championship game.

    There are five one-loss teams in the American, and the jockeying has already started for spots in the conference title game and possibly that automatic CFP bid that USF is holding right now highest-ranked Group of Five champion.

    But with plenty of football remaining to be played, anything could happen and everything could change.

    The No. 25 USF-Navy matchup is a battle of one-loss conference teams.  

    Meanwhile this weekend, two-loss Memphis goes to one-loss East Carolina. Tulane is coming off its big win at Memphis and will need to be on point when Florida Atlantic visits. North Texas, the fifth one-loss team, goes on the road to play a UAB team that upset Memphis four weeks ago.

    After USF (39%), the best odds among G5 teams to reach the playoffs is James Madison (35.8%). But USF has better key wins this year with victories against Boise State and at Florida and at North Texas.

    As the playoff brackets are currently listed, No. 12 USF would play at No. 5 Georgia in the opening round.

    Other currently bracketed matchups include: No. 11 Miami at No. 6 Texas Tech; No. 10 Texas at No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Oregon.

    The four top squads currently with byes are No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 Alabama.

  • Texas returns to top 10, ACC has five teams ranked in the Top 25 and there is Group of Five intrigue

    Texas returned to the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, the Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams ranked for the first time this season and two Group of Five conferences are now represented in the Top 25 a month before the playoff bracekt is set. The top five was unchanged.

    The Longhorns, the preseason No. 1 team, are ranked No. 10 in advance of its visit to No. 5 Georgia this week. They had been in the top 10 for the first six polls before their loss at Florida knocked them out of the Top 25 for a week.

    Four straight wins elevated them to No. 13 last week, and they jumped three spots ahead of BYU and Virginia and an idle Oklahoma, which they beat 23-6 on Oct. 11. Texas did not play over the weekend.

    Ohio State was No. 1 for the 11th week in a row with 55 first-place votes. Indiana remained No. 2 after its narrow escape at Penn State, but the Hoosiers’ six first-place votes were five fewer than last week.

    No. 3 Texas A&M got four first-place votes, three more than a week ago, and was 31 points behind Indiana. Alabama and Georgia rounded out the top five. Mississippi, Oregon, Texas Tech, Notre Dame and Texas rounded out the top 10.

    In all, 19 spots in the Top 25 have new teams.

    The ACC has five teams with one loss in conference play and two others with two losses. That’s reflected in the closely bunched group of ACC teams in the poll — No. 14 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Miami, No. 19 Louisville, No. 20 Virginia and No. 23 Pittsburgh. The last time the ACC had as many ranked teams was Nov. 3, 2024.

    The race for the Group of Five’s automatic bid in the College Football Playoff got more interesting with Memphis’ loss to Tulane on Friday. The CFP committee did not have a G5 team in its top 25 but said Memphis was first in line. That will almost certainly change when the committee’s next rankings come out Tuesday.

    No. 24 James Madison of the Sun Belt Conference made its first AP poll appearance since 2023. The Dukes are 8-1, their only loss to Louisville, and are the highest-ranked G5 team. No. 25 South Florida of the American Conference is right behind, and Tulane of the American received the most votes among the unranked.

    In and out

    — No. 23 Pittsburgh, No. 24 in the initial CFP rankings, is in the AP poll for the first time since last November.

    — No. 24 James Madison’s previous Top 25 appearance was in 2023, when Curt Cignetti’s last Dukes team was in the final seven regular-season polls.

    — No. 25 South Florida’s 32-point win over USTA helped Bulls to return after a two-week absence.

    Missouri (19), Memphis (22) and Washington (24) dropped out.

    Poll points

    — The last time there teams from two G5 conferences ranked at the same time was last year, when Boise State and UNLV of the Mountain West and Army and Memphis of the American were in the final two polls of the season.

    — BYU, which was unbeaten before its 29-7 loss at Texas Tech, dropped four spots to No. 12 to end its two-week stay in the top 10.

    — Virginia and James Madison give the commonwealth two ranked teams for the first time since the final 2023 regular-season poll (Liberty, James Madison).

    SEC (8): Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 13, 21.

    ACC (5): Nos. 14, 16, 19, 20, 23.

    No. 9 Notre Dame (6-2, No. 10 CFP) at No. 23 Pittsburgh (7-2, No. 24 CFP): Huge playoff implications for both. Irish and Panthers both ranked at time of their meeting for first time since 1991.

    No. 11 Oklahoma (7-2, 3-2, No. 12 CFP) at No. 4 Alabama (8-1, 6-0, No. 4 CFP): Last year’s embarrassing loss in Norman killed Crimson Tide’s playoff hopes.

    A month before the playoff matchups are set and things are unsettled: The latest AP Top 25 college football poll has 19 teams in new spots, including Texas at No. 10.

    The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, jumped three spots to return to the top 10 just in time for an SEC showdown at No. 5 Georgia.

    The top five — No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Georgia — were unchanged. No. 11 Oklahoma was the only other team that stayed put.

    No. 6 Ole Miss swapped spots with No. 7 Oregon, while No. 8 Texas Tech and No. 9 Notre Dame both moved up.

    Games to watch next week:

This once shaped up as a matchup of Heisman-contending QBs, but now Alabama’s Ty Simpson has pulled ahead of John Mateer.
    • No. 9 Notre Dame (No. 10 CFP) at No. 23 Pittsburgh (No. 24 CFP): Notre Dame can’t afford a third loss and hopes to remain in the CFP mix. Pitt would like to get into the discussion, but it lacks a marquee win. This game is that chance.

  • No. 10 Florida holds off rival Florida State 78-76

    GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Thomas Haugh had 20 points and 13 rebounds, Boogie Fland added 18 points and No. 10 Florida handed rival Florida State its first loss under new coach Luke Loucks, 78-76 on Tuesday night.

    The defending national champions nearly squandered a nine-point lead in the final six-plus minutes before making enough plays down the stretch to extend their winning streak in the series to five.

    Fland hit two free throws with 15.8 seconds remaining to put Florida (2-1) up 76-73, and Robert McCray V missed 3-point attempt on the other end. Alex Condon, who committed three turnovers that allowed the Seminoles (2-1) to rally late, seemingly closed it out by hitting two free throws with five seconds left.

    But it wasn’t over until Chauncey Wiggins’ 80-foot shot came up short. Wiggins got a chance because Haugh missed two free throws.

    McCray scored nine consecutive points for Florida State down the stretch, but he missed the second of two free throws with 17 seconds to go. He finished with 29 points. Wiggins added 11, and Kobe MaGee chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.

    Florida dominated the boards, finishing with a 58-36 rebounding advantage.

    Rueben Chinyelu had 10 points and 16 rebounds for the Gators. Condon added 11 points, six rebounds and six turnovers.

    The Gators trailed 40-35 early in the second half and looked to be in trouble as they couldn’t get any long-range shots to fall. They missed 18 of 21 from 3-point range before Fland got hot.

    Fland hit two 3s in a two-minute span, the first being his first of the season and the second bouncing off the side of the rim and the backboard before dropping through the net.

  • Florida turnovers spark Kentucky victory

    LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky took advantage of four Florida turnovers and Cutter Boley threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats handled the Gators 38-7.

    Seth McGowan ran for two touchdowns, and Dante Dowdell scored on a 65-yard run in the first home SEC win for Kentucky (4-5, 2-5) since a 33-14 win over Florida on Sept. 30, 2023.

    Gator quarterback DJ Lagway was picked off three times in the first half before being replaced by freshman Tramell Jones Jr. after halftime. Kentucky scored 10 points off the Florida (3-6, 2-4) miscues.

    Boley completed passes to 10 different receivers, including scoring passes of 29 yards to J.J. Hester and 15 yards to Jason Patterson.

    “This whole week, we came with juice, and everybody was excited, and everybody was ready to play,” Boley said. “We had a heartbeat tonight, and it was just really good to see these guys play hard.

    Kentucky led 24-7 at the half and put the game away to start the third quarter with a 13-play drive that took 7:26 off the clock. McGowan ended the drive with his second score of the night, a 5-yard run.

    “That was an enormous drive to start the second half. We mixed it up and had balance,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. “Having a long drive and getting seven points out of it is pretty important.”

    The Takeaway

    Florida: The Gator defense came into the game 32nd in the nation in points allowed per game at 20.5. But the turnovers put them in a tough position, and they gave up 401 total yards. It was Florida’s second straight loss after Coach Billy Napier was fired on Oct. 19.

    Kentucky: After consecutive wins, there is a path, albeit a tough one, to the postseason. Kentucky hosts Tennessee Tech, No. 5 in the FCS coaches poll, next Saturday. With a win next week, a victory on the road over No. 15 Vanderbilt or No. 14 Louisville would make the Wildcats bowl eligible.

     

    Calzada makes wrong headlines

    Former Kentucky starting quarterback Zach Calzada has apologized for a social media video he posted showing him flashing $100 dollar bills in response to being criticized. The transfer quarterback hurt his shoulder and then lost his starting job to Boley after two games. After the video went viral Thursday and made national headlines, Calzada posted an apology. The Kentucky athletic department stated, “Zach has taken responsibility for his actions. He has done the right thing and apologized. Now, it’s time to move forward.”

    Comedy of errors

    The two teams combined for four turnovers in the final 35 seconds of the first half.

    The antics started when Wildcat Quay’sheed Scott picked off a Lagway pass at the Kentucky 26 and returned it 55 yards. Boley then fumbled and Aaron Chiles recovered at the Florida 22. Three plays later, Daveren Rayner picked off another Lagway pass. On Kentucky’s first play, Bryce Thornton intercepted a Boley pass.

  • Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman sends clear message about Jeremiyah Love

    The Notre Dame Fighting Irish picked up a statement win, defeating Navy in a blowout 49-10. That kept the Irish within the College Football Playoff discussion, after a reveal earlier this week included them in the early bracket.

    The win included an impressive game from several individuals, including quarterback CJ Carr with 218 passing yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Malachi Fields caught four passes for 94 yards, while Carr threw touchdowns to KK Smith and Jordan Faison.

    In addition, Notre Dame’s ground game was significant, with Jeremiyah Love achieving 94 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Following the game, he received a strong statement from his head coach, Marcus Freeman.

    A reporter asked about Love’s contributions and being in the Heisman Trophy conversation, prompting Freeman to offer a strong endorsement of his receiver.

    “In my mind, yes, he is. There’s no question about it,” Freeman said when asked if Love is a Heisman candidate.

    “You know, you talk about one of the best players in the country, if he’s not one of them, then you know, it’s hard to believe how many other players are that special,” he told the media.

    “He’s a special player, and he had a great week of prep. He continues to do things that you haven’t seen, but things you know, you’re just not surprised with Jeremiyah Love,” Freeman said.

    Love is currently in his third season with the Irish and has compiled 894 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He’s also got 227 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Many mock drafts consider him a first-round pick, potentially going in the top 15 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

    He’s currently listed amongst the Heisman Trophy candidates, but is also considered a long shot to win. The current favorite is Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, followed by Ohio State’s Julian Sayin and Alabama’s Ty Simpson.

    The latest win by the Fighting Irish improved their overall record to 7-2 and their home record to 5-1. They remain ranked at No. 10 in the nation.

    Based on a theoretical CFP bracket released earlier this week at NCAA.com, Notre Dame’s first round would begin with a game against the BYU Cougars. However, BYU lost to Texas Tech on Saturday.

  • Oregon Beats Iowa With Last-Second Field Goal – KXL

    IOWA CITY, IA – The No. 6 Oregon Ducks pulled out an 18-16 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.

    After Dante Moore led a 10-play, 54-yard drive, Ducks kicker Atticus Sappington booted the go-ahead 39-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game.

    Iowa (6-3 overall, 4-2 in Big Ten play, No. 20 CFP) took a late lead, as quarterback Mark Gronowski ran the ball in from three-yards for a touchdown with 1:51 to play.  The run coming at the end of a 12-play, 93-yard drive.  The Hawkeyes attempted a two-point conversion, but Gronowski’s pass was incomplete.

    Moore was connected with his receivers five times for 47 yards passing during the winning drive. He finished with with a total 112 yards passing and one interception on a day when the offense struggled somewhat.

    Noah Whittington had 118 rushing yards for Oregon.

    The Ducks (8-1 overall, 5-1 in Big Ten play, No. 9 CFP) extended their road winning streak to 11 games, the longest in the FBS.

    Chapel Hill, N.C. — The North Carolina defense had three sacks on Stanford’s first two possessions, including one that led to a fumble recovery deep in Stanford territory.

    UNC led Stanford 3-0 in the second quarter.

    The Tar Heels entered the game with 18 sacks on the season, including 10 in the last two games. The defensive line, in particular, has been a bright spot for the team in recent weeks. Linebacker Andrew Simpson had hit Stanford quarterback Elijah Brown, making his first start, and lineman Smith Vilbert recovered.

    UNC’s offense couldn’t move the ball, and the Tar Heels settled for a 27-yard field goal.

    The Tar Heels (3-5 overall, 1-3 in the ACC) is seeking its second consecutive win under head coach Bill Belichick. The game airs on The CW.

    On Tuesday, Belichick said he’s seen a consistent effort from the UNC players in recent weeks.

    “That’s really been the biggest thing … [as to] why our team has continued to improve because they work hard every week,” Belichick said. “They improve every week.

    “They literally improve every day, and when you stack those on top of each other consistently over a period of time, then you just perform better.”

    Stanford (3-6, 2-4 ACC) has lost two straight games, including a 35-20 loss to Pittsburgh on Nov. 1. Stanford coach Frank Reich, like Belichick a former NFL coach, switched quarterbacks this week.

    Saturday’s game is Military Appreciation Day and homecoming. Several events are planned to honor Tar Heel veterans. The pop group Fitz and The Tantrums performed afree pregame concert in Polk Place as part of the Chapel Thrill Concert Series.

  • Keeler: CU Buffs QB Julian Lewis brought Shedeur Sanders’ juice, deep ball back to Coach Prime’s attack

    MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — If Saturday in Morgantown was an audition, Julian Lewis passed.

    And passed.

    And passed.

    Ju Ju looked past open receivers. He looked ready to turtle whenever West Virginia sent the house. But he also looked like Shedeur Sanders out there at times, didn’t he?

    Especially when dropping ball after ball in the bucket for CU wide receiver Omarion Miller.

    The Buffs dropped their third game in a row at Milan Puskar Stadium, falling 29-22 against the Mountaineers and slipping to 3-7 on a lost season.

    Yet it was the most fun the Buffs have been in what, a month? For the first time in what feels like forever, we saw snippets of last fall’s passing game. We saw the deep ball and the vertical passing game that scared the Big 12 half to death.

    2024: Shedeur to Travis Hunter.

    2025: Ju Ju to Omarion.

    Sanders said earlier this week that his decision to start Lewis, a true freshman, at quarterback was guided by “common sense.”

    Hindsight is 20/20, especially when a year goes off the rails. But what took so long?

    Coach Prime should’ve listened to his common sense sooner.

    While senior Kaidon Salter offered zero juice and minimal downfield threat at QB1, Lewis walked into coal country and looked the part. The Mountaineers blitzed from the left. They blitzed from the right. At one point, they even pulled out a piece of Ju Ju’s hair. Kid hung tough: 22 completions on 35 attempts for 299 yards and two touchdowns.

    Lewis to Miler was the combo CU has been waiting for all year. The chemistry was undeniable. The combo was almost unguardable: Miller finished with six catches for 131 receiving yards and a score.

    Ju Ju was at his strongest rolling and throwing to his left, hitting Miller for a 43-yard rainbow early, then Sincere Brown (19 yards) and Joseph Williams (13 yards) on CU’s second drive of the second quarter.

    And yes, some context applies here, too. West Virginia’s defense going into the weekend ranked last in the Big 12 in opponent passer rating (160.25) and 14th in the league in passing yards allowed per game (270.8). It was not unlike debuting a rookie hitter against the 2025 Rockies at Coors Field — a soft landing, a chance to build numbers and confidence.

    Still, you could see that confidence growing in real time. On the CU drive that ended the third quarter and opened the fourth, the freshman faced second-and-7 from the West Virginia 20. He scanned quickly, feeling the pocket constricting to his left and his right. It was the kind of bang-bang play that would’ve been a sure-fire sack earlier in the game, never mind earlier in the season. Lewis stepped up in the pocket and took off for a 3-yard gain, giving CU a third-and-4 at the home 17. CU eventually got a 35-yard field goal from Alejandro Mata to pull the Buffs to within 22-19 with 14:51 left to play in the tilt.
