    CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — At least 14 people died in a mine collapse in El Callao, Venezuela after torrential rains hit the southeast region, authorities said on Monday.

    A command post was set up to “coordinate operations to recover the 14 deceased,” led by Brigadier General Gregory González Acevedo, head of the Operational Zones for Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (ZOEDAN) in Bolívar state.

    The deaths occurred in three different shafts of the “Cuatro Esquinas de Caratal” mine, located in town of El Callao, about 850 kilometers (528 miles) southeast of Caracas, the agency reported in a statement on its Instagram account.

    Search and rescue operations began with “the pumping out of all the shafts in the area to lower the water level, and then evaluating rescue efforts” for the people trapped inside the gold mine, the statement added, without providing further details.

    The death toll is based on other miners’ testimony, fire fighters in El Callao said on social media. Flooding caused the collapse of the vertical mines, known as ravines.

    El Callao is a town where life depends on gold mining. Most of its 30,000 inhabitants participate directly or indirectly in mining.

    Venezuela is full of copper, diamond and other precious metal mining, where unsafe working conditions are common in the poorly regulated industry.

    As seen in footage that has now made its rounds on social media, Young was performing some of her most beloved songs at the All Things Go festival in the Forest Hills Stadium in New York on Saturday, Sept. 27, when she began to sway, dropping her microphone, and collapsing backward.

    Crew members rushed on stage to attend to Young, 24, as fans in the crowd watched on. Young was eventually carried off the stage as fans cheered her on.

    Before the scary incident, Young told her audience that she had experienced a “tricky couple of days” but didn’t want to “wallow in my sadness” making the decision to perform at the festival anyway. After sharing the clichè “when life gives your lemons, make lemonade,” Young thanked her fans for being there.

    In the videos circulating online, Young can be seen mouthing to someone off stage that she “feels faint.” Moments later, Young collapses.

    Following the incident, Young took to Instagram hours later to share an update.

    Via a short statement shared on her Instagram stories, Young wrote, “Hi, For anyone who saw my set at all things go today, I am doing okay now. Thank you for all of your support. Lola xxx.”

    The following day, Sept. 28, Young returned to Instagram to announce that she would not be returning to the All Things Go stage.

    “I’m sorry to confirm that I won’t be playing all things go in DC today. I love this job and I never take my commitments and audience for granted so I’m sorry to those who will be disappointed by this. I hope you’ll all give me another chance in the future.     The singer didn’t go into details regarding why she collapsed on stage.

    Young burst on to the music scene last year with her viral 2024 hit “Messy.” Several months later, she released her third studio album in 2025.

    (FOX40.COM) — A massive fire that destroyed the historic Hotel Marysville in Northern California prompted a long-lasting road closure along Highway 70.

    “SR-70 (E Street) in downtown Marysville is closed for the foreseeable future,” said California Highway Patrol Yuba-Sutter. “Motorists, please be patient in traffic and leave much earlier for whatever you are driving to.”

    At around 9:30 p.m. on June 15, Hotel Marysville, located right off of Highway 70 in Yuba County, went up in flames. Officials worry the damage may cause the building to collapse so nearby roads were closed. Linda Fire Protection District and Marysville Fire Chief Kyle Heggstrom told FOX40.com that a structural engineer will make a determination on the building’s integrity.

    The California Department of Transportation recommends an alternate route to Highway 70/E Street in Marysville./Caltrans

    The century-old hotel that’s been vacant since the 1980s could be torn down altogether.

    “This could be an extended closure if the building, which opened in 1926, needs to be demolished,” Caltrans said on social media. “A detour is being developed for commercial trucks and will be shared when finalized. Use 99 as an alternate route.”

    A cargo ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, destroying the span in a matter of seconds and plunging it into the river in a terrifying collapse that could disrupt a vital shipping port for months. Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended until Wednesday morning.The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.As the vessel neared the bridge, puffs of black smoke could be seen as the lights flickered on and off. It struck one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to collapse like a toy, and a section of the span came to rest on the bow. With the ship barreling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” authorities had just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge, Maryland Gov.     A cargo ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, destroying the span in a matter of seconds and plunging it into the river in a terrifying collapse that could disrupt a vital shipping port for months. Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended until Wednesday morning.

    The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.

    As the vessel neared the bridge, puffs of black smoke could be seen as the lights flickered on and off. It struck one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to collapse like a toy, and a section of the span came to rest on the bow.

    With the ship barreling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” authorities had just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

    “These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives last night.”

    In the evening, Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent for Maryland State Police, announced that the search and rescue mission was transitioning to one of search and recovery. He also said the search was being put on pause and divers would return to the site at 6 a.m. Wednesday, when challenging overnight conditions were expected to improve. No bodies have been recovered, Butler said.

    The crash happened in the middle of the night, long before the busy morning commute on the bridge that stretches 1.6 miles and was used by 12 million vehicles last year.

    The six missing people were part of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge, said Paul Wiedefeld, the state’s transportation secretary.

    Guatemala’s consulate in Maryland said in a statement that two of the missing were citizens of the Central American nation. It did not provide their names but said consular officials were in contact with authorities and assisting the families.

    Honduras’ Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio García told The Associated Press that a Honduran citizen, Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, was missing. He said he had been in contact with Suazo’s family.

    And the Washington Consulate of Mexico said via the social media platform X that citizens of that nation were also among the missing. It did not say how many.

    When Pastor Frank Wulf thinks about his congregation being unable to worship in their home of 100 years, he is reminded of the Old Testament scripture of the Israelites in exile.

    Wulf’s church, Echo Park United Methodist Church on North Alvarado Street and Reservoir Street in northeast Los Angeles, is not currently safe for occupation. The century-old dome over the church’s bell tower was damaged by the recent atmospheric rivers that pounded California, and structural engineers say it could topple into the church and lead to a snowball effect of collapses that could injure people inside the structure.

    But just as the Israelites did when the Persians let them back into the land of Israel, Wulf says they will rebuild.

    “The church is really not a building but a community of people, a community that’s cared for each other over a long period of time,” Wulf said.

    Wulf’s congregation has been out of its historic home since Feb. 1, the pastor said.

    That came after the first pounding storm of the season led to the partial collapse of the tower, exposing the wood that holds up the golden dome.

    The wood had badly deteriorated: There was dry rot, termites and water damage.

    The first structural engineer who inspected the building told Wulf and his team that the church was not a safe place for groups to congregate.

    The evacuation of the building affects not just the 40 or 45 people who attend Sunday services, but also the others in the community whom the church serves.

    Wulf said services for homeless Angelenos, such as showers outside the building and free food, have had to be paused.

    He also had to inform the 12-step groups for people struggling with alcoholism or other substance use disorders that they could not meet at the church, at least for now.

    The church had been building temporary shelter for migrants bused to Los Angeles from Texas. It was supposed to welcome four families to live in the space in mid-February, but it had to halt that program as well.

    “Our primary commitment is to keep everyone safe,” the church team said in a statement on a GoFundMe page they posted to raise money for the work needed to reopen.

    Wulf has not decided yet if they will repair the century-old building.

    “Would this be the appropriate time to perhaps take the whole building down and start from scratch?” he asked.

    At least 10 families were forced from their homes when their New Jersey apartment complex partially collapsed into the basement where the boilers are, compromising utilities.

    Hawthorne fire officials say they were dispatched to the Rock Road complex around 9 a.m. Sunday for a report of a floor collapse. They confirmed a wall, and part of the first floor, fell into the basement. Nine boilers were destroyed, leaving affected families without heat and hot water.

    That building, along with neighboring apartments, was evacuated. An engineer shored the building up, and firefighters spent almost 12 hours at the scene securing it.

    Officials say it appears the ground moisture pushed against the wall for years, and the wall gave in.

    Some tenants say they’ve complained in the past about boiler and structural concerns, and now fear they’ll never get back into their homes at all.

    “You can’t sleep at night, it’s that bad, where the banging of the pipes, it feels like the boiler is going to explode,” said resident Michael Barchetto.

    No injuries were reported.

    The Red Cross says it’s helping 12 people from seven families with immediate needs; it’s also helping three other families.

    Hunter Biden charged with tax crimes in Los Angeles

    Hunter Biden, the president’s son, was indicted Thursday in Los Angeles on several federal tax charges, marking the start of a second criminal case that will proceed during his father’s reelection campaign.

    Biden, who resides in Malibu, was accused of failing to pay his taxes on time from 2016 to 2019, filing false and fraudulent tax returns in 2018, and tax evasion, according to the 56-page indictment.

    The charges in the nine-count indictment span a period when Biden was addicted to alcohol and crack cocaine, which he documented in graphic detail in a memoir that dwells on the death of his brother, Beau, along with the grief and depression that consumed him and his family.

    Biden has since become sober, paid his taxes, along with penalties and interest, and his lawyers are expected to point to his well-publicized addiction to explain his chaotic financial affairs.

    But prosecutors contend that he “willfully” failed to file and pay his taxes on time, and that rather than pay the IRS, he plunked down cash for a bacchanalia across L.A. featuring “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature.”

    Further, prosecutors allege that when preparing tax returns in 2020, in the early months of his sobriety, Biden misclassified a litany of personal expenses from 2018 as business expenses to reduce his tax burden. Those expenses include tuition for his daughter and a Venmo payment to an exotic dancer, according to the indictment.

    If convicted of all charges — six misdemeanors and three felonies — Biden would face a maximum penalty of 17 years in prison, although federal guidelines would call for a far lower sentence.

    The case was unsealed on the eve of President Biden’s arrival in Southern California for his first in-person fundraising trip here since Hollywood strikes put a pause on campaign events.

    The charges come months after Hunter Biden was set to enter a plea deal for tax and firearms violations. The deal would have avoided time behind bars and included immunity from additional federal charges, but it collapsed under questioning by a federal judge in Delaware. Shortly after, Atty. Gen. Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, as special counsel.

    Weiss has since brought a fresh indictment in Delaware against Biden for the firearms violations, accusing him of lying about his drug use in 2018 when purchasing a gun that he briefly owned. Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are rarely filed as a standalone case.

    The special counsel also brought the tax charges against Biden in California, asserting in a statement that the president’s son “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.”

    Biden’s defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, emphasized that his client had long ago paid his tax debts and accused Weiss of bowing to Republican pressure by filing “unprecedented and unconstitutional gun charges.”

    “Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter’s last name was anything other than Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now California, would not have been brought,” Lowell said, an apparent nod to millions of people who annually fail to pay their taxes on time.

    “Now, after five years of investigating with no new evidence — and two years after Hunter paid his taxes in full — the U.S. attorney has piled on nine new charges when he had agreed just months ago to resolve this matter with a pair of misdemeanors.”

    Lowell noted that he had written to the special counsel’s office this week, seeking a “customary meeting” to discuss the tax inquiry. “The response was media leaks today that these charges were being filed,” Lowell said.

    The indictment offers the most detailed window into the Department of Justice’s long-running inquiry into Biden.

    In his memoir and in several interviews, Biden has been open about the depths of his addiction and unsavory lifestyle in L.A., when he lived out of the Chateau Marmont, Hollywood Roosevelt and other luxury hotels in a haze of sex and crack-induced euphoria. “I never slept. There was no clock. Day bled into night and night into day,” Biden wrote in “Beautiful Things,” in which he recounts his journey to sobriety.

    Still, the grand jury indictment outlines how such sordid travails were fiscally carried out — with $7 million in income from 2016 to 2020 from various business dealings — and uses Biden’s own words to claim discrepancies in his tax returns.

    The most serious charges stem from 2018, the height of Biden’s addiction. Prosecutors allege the filing of that year’s tax returns for both Biden and his business, Owasco PC, was fraudulent and evasive.

    Those returns were prepared in early 2020 by an accounting team in L.A. Prosecutors describe a three-hour meeting that Biden had with the accountants that year where he reviewed records to confirm their accuracy and used a yellow highlighter to indicate outlays that should not be deducted as business expenses.

    According to the indictment, Biden failed to identify several personal expenses, including the Venmo payment to an exotic dancer; $2,312.50 to a test prep service for one of his daughters; and a $30,000 law school tuition payment for his daughter.

    The indictment makes no mention of Biden’s father, nor does it specify the amount that Biden allegedly under-reported his taxes or how that would ultimately impact his tax bill.

    Although prosecutors claim that Biden in 2020 “never told” his accountants about his extensive drug and alcohol use, “which might have prompted greater scrutiny of his claims of hundreds of thousands of dollars in business expenses,” he had already begun discussing his alcohol and drug addiction in public.

    Wednesday marks three years since a tragedy unfolded along Canal Street in New Orleans. The Hard Rock Hotel collapsed three years ago. The building was under construction when three workers were killed. The site has since been cleaned up, but there are many questions about what will happen with the space and what is next for the victims’ families, who are still waiting for answers. Jose Arreola, Quinnyon Wimberly, and Anthony Magrette were killed, and several others were injured. Nearby property was also damaged, and a portion of Canal Street was closed for more than a year. Last month, a judge brought in a mediator to work out a settlement with hundreds of people who claimed damages from the collapse. Civil District Judge Kern Reese appointed John Perry Jr. as a special master to work out a settlement. He is negotiating with a committee of 13 plaintiffs’ attorneys and with the hotel’s developers and contractors. The developers of the site, 1031 Canal, issued the following statement: “Today, the owner of the 1031 Canal project joins many others in remembering those who were victims of the tragedy which occurred three years ago, as well as remaining mindful of their families.     Wednesday marks three years since a tragedy unfolded along Canal Street in New Orleans.

    The Hard Rock Hotel collapsed three years ago.

    The building was under construction when three workers were killed.

    The site has since been cleaned up, but there are many questions about what will happen with the space and what is next for the victims’ families, who are still waiting for answers.

    Jose Arreola, Quinnyon Wimberly, and Anthony Magrette were killed, and several others were injured. Nearby property was also damaged, and a portion of Canal Street was closed for more than a year.

    Last month, a judge brought in a mediator to work out a settlement with hundreds of people who claimed damages from the collapse.

    Civil District Judge Kern Reese appointed John Perry Jr. as a special master to work out a settlement.

    He is negotiating with a committee of 13 plaintiffs’ attorneys and with the hotel’s developers and contractors.

    The developers of the site, 1031 Canal, issued the following statement:

    “Today, the owner of the 1031 Canal project joins many others in remembering those who were victims of the tragedy which occurred three years ago, as well as remaining mindful of their families.
