There are tons of ways to wear a puffer jacket, but I’d say they look best with pants, leggings, and sweatpants. If you’re wearing a skirt or a dress, go for a more structured coat instead.

For an effortless everyday look, wear your puffer jacket with denim, boots or sneakers, and any top or sweater of your choosing.

By adding accessories like chunky gold jewelry and cool sunglasses, you’ll be able to elevate this ensemble even further.

Oversized Sweater Outfit

Nothing is quite as cozy—or as warm—as a chunky, oversized sweater.

I especially love the magic 8-ball graphic print on this knit sweater, which gives it an eye-catching element.

Winter is in full swing, and for many of us, that means that dressing for warmth is a top priority right now.

As fashion girlies, this may present a challenge, since bundling up can make it tricky to show off your sense of style. Layering for the cold is a must, but how can you do so without looking… well, lumpy?

We’ve got the answers! This guide will teach you how to layer like a pro so that you can stay warm on campus — in style.

With these practical tips and must-have winter layering pieces, you’ll learn to expertly layer your clothing without sacrificing your style (or looking lumpy).

Practical Tips for Staying Warm
- Opt for higher necklines and longer lengths. It should come as no surprise that a turtleneck is going to keep you warmer than a V-neck or that long pants are going to keep you warmer than a mini skirt, so dress accordingly.
- Consider fabric contents. While fabrics like linen or silk are fabulous for the spring and summer, in the wintertime, not so much. Go for knitwear (including wool, which doesn’t pull heat away from your body, helping you to retain heat), fleece, shearling, corduroy, and heavyweight cotton during the winter instead.
- Don’t forget the winter accessories. These will play a major role in helping you stay warm while outdoors but also add fashionable flair to your winter outfits. For the cutest and most practical winter accessories of the season, check out our guide here.
- Consider investing in warming gadgets like hand warmers or a heated jacket to beat extreme cold.
- Tights are your friends. Make dresses, shorts, and skirts fall and winter-appropriate by pairing them with a trusty pair of tights. Tights also can transform strappy stilettos or peep-toed pumps into chic winter shoes.
- Take it up a notch with leggings. Intense cold calls for thicker layers, which is why you may want to swap out your tights for leggings if it’s freezing outside. Leggings still have a slim fit, so you’ll be able to wear them under skirts, dresses, and even certain pants.
- Layer, layer, layer! Layers are the ultimate key to not only staying warm, but also comfortable when you’re going from the freezing outdoors into a heated classroom, for example. More on layering below!
The Art of Layering

As I mentioned before, layering is the ultimate hack to staying warm and comfortable during the wintertime.

It is especially crucial if you’ll be going from outdoors to indoors (and vice versa), e.g., walking across campus in the snow to sit in a heated classroom and then back outside into the cold again.

Base layers are the perfect place to start; these are items you wear under your main clothing pieces to help you retain heat. Think long-sleeve tops, leggings, and other body-hugging items that will provide added insulation without being detectable on the outside.

Because these pieces are slim-fitting, you don’t have to worry about looking lumpy, especially if the clothing you wear over top is a bit roomier.

After the base layers come your middle layers, which essentially consist of your main outfit, like a shirt and jeans or a sweater and a skirt, for example.

Lastly, your outer layer is your outerwear, be it a puffer jacket or a long coat. To combat the cold, you’ll want all three layers plus the right cold-weather accessories to stay as warm as possible.

Key Pieces for Winter Outfits

Now that we’ve covered the basics of layering and its importance during the wintertime, let’s talk about the key clothing, accessories, and shoes to invest in for a functional winter wardrobe.

These items are going to help you layer like a pro and stay warm throughout the cold season.

Thermal Base Layers

Thermal base layers are my #1 recommendation for beating the cold.

These refer to long-sleeve tops, long johns, and leggings that are thin enough to be worn under your other clothing items and made with heat-retaining fabric.

This soft, stretchy, thermal top is a great pick since it’s perfect for layering under a sweater or sweatshirt in the wintertime for added warmth, but it’s also moisture-wicking so that you’ll stay dry throughout your day.

Just remember, opt for a size that is going to give you a slim fit (rather than a loose fit) in order to best retain your body heat.

Warm-Lined Leggings

Who doesn’t love black leggings?! Basic black leggings are obviously a wardrobe staple, especially for college girls.

But in the wintertime, thin cotton leggings aren’t going to cut it. Swap those out for some warm-lined leggings, like this fleece-lined pair, instead.

These leggings feature a full fleece-lined interior, which is going to help keep you warm, yet they still look sleek, making them totally layer-able!

On extremely cold days, wear these under looser pants like jeans, cargo pants, and sweatpants for an added layer of warmth. They will hardly be detectable, so you won’t have to worry about looking lumpy!

Camisoles

My secret weapon during the winter? Camisoles.

These are a base layer that is often overlooked, probably because they look like tank tops, so you’d assume that they are only for the summertime. But that isn’t the case!

All winter long, I wear camisoles under my tops and sweaters and have found that they are an incredible way to retain heat without adding bulk to my outfits. The key is to wear a camisole with a body-hugging fit, as this is what will help your body stay warm. (If it’s loose, it gives cold air a chance to get underneath and chill your skin).

Neutral-colored camisoles are going to be your best bet for having them appear undetectable under your clothing, but it depends on what you’ll be wearing over top. On very cold days, I will layer a camisole under a long-sleeve base layer top under a sweater or sweatshirt for maximum warmth, and it works like a charm.

Best of all, camisoles tend to be extremely affordable — these are under $5 each!

Thermal Socks

Yes, you’re probably already wearing socks during the wintertime… but are you wearing thermal socks?

Heavier socks made with fabrics like wool are going to keep your feet way warmer in the cold, even if you’re already wearing winter boots.

Though these socks are thick and cozy, they are also breathable, which is a must!

Warm Tights

If you want to wear a skirt or a dress during the wintertime, tights are going to be a game-changer. Not just any tights, though; thermal tights.

These tights have an internal brushed lining to keep you extra warm.

They come in a bunch of colors, including classic black, but I love this red hue, which is very on-trend this season.

Bodysuits

When you think of bodysuits, you probably think of the cute kind you wear on a Saturday night out.

But have you considered wearing a bodysuit layered under your clothing for added warmth?

This fleece-lined bodysuit is going to help you retain heat while also looking sleek, whether you wear it on its own or layered under heavier pieces like a knit sweater.

Vests

Sometimes, on the coldest days, even heavy winter coats alone don’t cut it. So, on super chilly days, try layering a slim-fitting vest under your coat for added heat retention.

A vest that does not have a bulky construction, like this cropped sherpa vest, should fit under your coat just fine and will help you retain body heat.

This one also has a mock neck design, so if you forget a scarf, you’ll still be covered.

Winter Boots

Take on the cold, snow, sleet, rain, and slush with ease in some waterproof winter boots.

With their seam-sealed construction, these boots will keep wet elements out for a dry, warm interior, along with their cute, cozy faux fur lining. They are ideal for walking around campus all winter long.

Now it’s time to put all the layers we’ve been talking about together — into some stylish, non-lumpy, layered looks.

Layering Without Looking Lumpy

Baggy jeans are a big denim trend this season, but their roomy fit can let cold air circulate through your legs. By layering some leggings or thermal tights underneath the jeans though, you’ll be able to retain your body heat, and no one will be the wiser!

The same goes on top: layer a thermal base layer underneath your sweater, like this black turtleneck. Though it’s lined with fleece, it has a sleek, body-hugging design with a lightweight feel that will fit under a sweater.

Go for a contrasting look by opting for a light-colored sweater, such as this waffle-knit quarter-zip pullover sweater, worn under a shearling-lined jacket.

Don’t forget crucial cold weather accessories like a knit beanie hat (this cuffed one is made with a warm wool and cashmere blend), some thick wool socks, and durable winter boots, like this faux shearling pair.

This layered look is ideal for a chilly winter day — if it’s extra cold, opt for an even heavier coat, like a puffer jacket.

While it can seem easier to layer with casual clothing, the same can be done with dressier pieces, too.

Pleated mini skirts and skorts are another major fashion trend this season, and you can make this trend winter-appropriate by wearing your skorts with some thermal tights and a thermal bodysuit.

On top of the fleece-lined bodysuit base layer, wear a knit cardigan sweater for added warmth (plus, you can easily take the cardi off if you get too warm while indoors).

If you don’t have to worry about snow or other extreme weather, try a cute pair of chunky loafers with shearling lining that will keep your feet nice and toasty.

By layering some knit leg warmers over your tights, you’ll be that much warmer (but your feet won’t feel too bulky in the fuzzy loafers).

Another fun beanie hat option? One with a pom pom! These can either be knit poms (like the one above) or poms made with faux fur. Both are equally cute and wintery! I also adore this hat’s cable knit design.

They also come in a TON of different colors and patterns, giving you plenty of options to pick from.

Mittens

If you aren’t concerned about using a touchscreen while out in the cold, go for some plush, fleece-lined mittens. Your hands will stay warm and toasty in mittens, especially these, which have a soft fleece lining and feature a hint of cashmere in their knit material.

Ear Muffs

What’s cuter than some faux fur earmuffs?! This adorable cold-weather accessory is a perfect way to keep your ears warm while also showing off your sense of style.

Another bonus? Earmuffs are less likely to mess up your hairstyle the way beanie hats can, so consider wearing these (rather than a hat) on days that you have a hairstyle you want to preserve.

Knit Headband

Similar to earmuffs but with a slightly sportier vibe, a knit headband is another great way to keep your ears warm in the cold.

Whether you wear it to class or on a winter Hot Girl Walk, it will help keep your hair out of your face and it also gives you the ability to wear your hair up (which you can’t do with a hat!).

Warm-Lined Leggings

Every college girl needs some basic black leggings in her wardrobe, but if you go to college anywhere that experiences cold winters, you *also* need some warm-lined leggings. Trust me, these are a game-changer!

These thermal leggings are lined with fleece to keep you extra warm and can be worn on their own with an oversized sweater or sweatshirt or layered underneath looser pants for added warmth when it’s very cold outside. Base layers are crucial if you are heading out in winter weather, and fleece-lined leggings are a great place to start.

Tights

If you don’t want to give up skirts and dresses during the winter, tights are going to be a must-have for you. Take it a step further with some thermal tights, which are made specifically for cold weather.

These solid color knitted Heattech tights offer heat retention and heat absorption, and even have deodorizing and odor control features. Best of all, they won’t make you look bulky thanks to their thinly knit design, and feature a high-rise design that will keep your midsection warm, too.

Sherpa Bucket Hat

One of my favorite cold weather trends this season is sherpa bucket hats. These have such a fashion-forward vibe and will transform any outfit — even a laid-back sweat set — into a cool, street-style look.

This faux leather and sherpa bucket hat is an especially great find, as it is reversible, giving you two different looks with one hat.

Faux Fur Hat

Calling all faux fur lovers! Faux fur hats are another major trend for the season, and there’s no denying that these make you look luxe.

This faux fur large bucket hat is made with ultra-plush faux fur for a standout look. The fluffy material will also keep you extra warm and snug.

Detached Hood

A hood can make a huge difference in staying warm while outside in the cold, but of course, not every jacket has one. With a detachable hood, this is no longer an issue!

Turn any coat or jacket into a hooded one with this detachable nylon hood that is lightweight but will keep you that much warmer. This will also come in clutch if it starts raining or snowing while you’re out and about on campus.

Snood

A scarf and a hood combined? Sign us up!

A snood is the best of both worlds and a great option you can throw in your school bag and pull out whenever you need it (e.g. when walking to your next class across campus).

The chunky knit material of this snood will help you keep warm and also looks adorable.

Hoodie Balaclava

If you’re not into nylon or knits, try this hoodie balaclava instead. This detached hood will give you the feeling of your favorite cozy hoodie minus the bulk.

It is fleece-lined, has an adjustable drawstring opening, and comes in six different shades, so you’re sure to find a favorite.

Layering Sweater Vest

Designed especially for layering, this cropped layering sweater vest is a stylish way to add warmth to your winter outfits.

With a cropped, loose-fitting design, boxy fit, and distressed look, this soft knit vest is easy to wear over long-sleeve tops, turtlenecks, and even other sweaters (so long as they aren’t super chunky).

Hand Warmers

Hand warmers are one of the most forgotten-about winter accessories, which is why I am here to remind you what a huge difference these can make when you’re out in the cold!

While you can also get rechargeable hand warmers, I tend to forget to recharge them, so I recommend the classic, good ol’ air-activated kind. Stick a pack in your pocket and simply shake them when you are ready to activate the heat.

Do note that they take 15 – 30 minutes to heat up, so you may want to start the activation process before your class ends and you head out into the cold. If you do this in the morning, they may last you the rest of the school day since they stay warm for up to 10 hours!

Warm Socks

Another winter accessory that is often underestimated? Socks. You’d be surprised at how much heat can be lost from your feet, which is why investing in some ultra-warm socks for wintertime is a necessity.

Look for socks that are thermal, wool-blend, and/or insulated — this six-pack of socks is all of the above! They are super thick and designed for the winter; wear them with your boots all season long for maximum warmth.

Knee-High Socks

For an even warmer sock option, try over-the-knee or knee-high socks. Whether you wear them under your jeans or over your leggings, these Merino wool knee-high socks are made for winter days and feature stretch, tension, and arch support; plus, they are naturally moisture-wicking.

If you’re going to be wearing knee-high boots, tall socks are especially a must!

For a streetwear look, try some faux leather cargo pants with a loose fit paired with a knit top, chunky boots or sneakers, and a puffer jacket. These pants also work with heeled booties and a going-out top for a nighttime look.

Faux leather jackets, especially ones with faux fur lining, are another favorite for the season. An oversized faux leather aviator jacket is an ultra-stylish way to warm up this winter and will make any outfit look instantly cooler.

Knitwear

Knitwear in the wintertime? *Groundbreaking.* But seriously, knitwear is a key element of winter style, including streetwear style — you just have to look out for pieces that have a more relaxed vibe, whether with an oversized fit or funky print.

Oversized sweaters are a must-have that you can wear with jeans, cargo pants, faux leather pants, and more. And while just about anything goes, consider sweaters in bright colors and/or with an interesting pattern, like swirls, geometric shapes, or a graphic print for extra flair.

An even more unique way to incorporate knitwear into your winter streetwear outfits is with pieces that aren’t sweaters. For example, these knit cargo pants and matching knit hoodie are items that usually aren’t made from a sweater-like fabric, so it makes them that much cooler (and warmer).

Ready to build your winter streetwear wardrobe? These are the essential pieces to look for — they will keep you warm while looking cool. Try these winter streetwear outfit combinations for a stylish take on winter dressing.

Puffer Jackets

IDK about you, but I practically live in puffer jackets during the wintertime. They are one of the warmest options when it comes to outerwear, and with so many fashionable options, there’s a puffer for any style or outfit.

You can’t go wrong with a short or cropped puffer jacket, especially with jeans and sneakers as a daily look. Another alternative? A long puffer jacket. It’s the ultimate way to beat the cold, and it looks ultra cool with sweatpants and chunky boots.

Long Coats

There’s something about long coats that just make you look chic. Whether you wear a trench coat or a dad coat, long coats that have a structured design give you an instantly polished appearance that is sure to elevate your winter streetwear looks — even laid-back outfits with sneakers.

Long coats are also a perfect pick for layered looks; wear one with a sweater layered over a longer shirt, along with cargo pants or wide-leg pants for a fashion-forward effect.

Fleece Jacket

There can often be an overlap between streetwear and athleisure, so it’s no surprise that fleece jackets with an athletic vibe are staples for both aesthetics.

Whether you style them with leggings for a true athletic look or opt for a street-style vibe by styling them with parachute or cargo pants, these jackets are as cozy as they are cool.

It doesn’t get much comfier or cozier than some fleece sweats. Whether you opt for a sweatsuit with a matching sweatshirt and sweatpants or wear the pieces separately, you are sure to feel super snug. Luckily, sweats are a mainstay in streetwear, so you won’t have to sacrifice comfort for style this season.

Be sure to opt for sweatshirts and sweatpants with oversized fits, which have more of a streetwear feel (plus, they’re extra comfortable).

Loose-Fitting Jeans

Baggy and loose-fitting jeans are the ultimate bottoms for streetwear outfits, especially in the wintertime; these jeans pair especially well with sneakers, which are a streetwear staple.

You can even layer tights or leggings underneath your jeans to stay extra warm during the winter. Be sure to consider heavy denim for added warmth, too.

Coated jeans are another great option: these have a similar look to faux leather pants but are a bit more casual. A pair with a baggy fit will look ultra-cool styled with sneakers and a cropped puffer jacket, as shown above.

The other style of pants that rivals baggy jeans when it comes to streetwear? Cargo pants, of course!

These feature a similar baggy fit but with added pockets — and who doesn’t love pockets?! These casual pants are ideal for everyday wear, whether with sneakers, boots, clogs, and more.

Like with baggy jeans, you can consider layering tights or leggings under your cargos for extra warmth.

Trendy Winter Accessories

To put together the perfect winter streetwear look, you can’t forget about winter accessories that are going to elevate your ensemble — and keep you extra warm.

A knit beanie hat is an absolute must-have, and IMO, you can never have enough of these! From solid-color beanies to beanies with graphic prints or bold logos, these are going to help you retain heat while also giving you a laid-back vibe.

An oversized scarf is another winter streetwear staple, especially one with a colorful plaid print. These warm, fuzzy accessories are a great way to add a pop of color and print to your winter outfits.

Sneakers

Streetwear and sneakers go hand-in-hand. And what’s not to like about shoes that are actually comfortable to wear?!

There are so many trendy sneaker styles to choose from this season, all of which will add major flair to your looks. Some of my favorite streetwear-style sneakers to consider are Adidas Samba and Gazelle sneakers, New Balance 530 (above) and 9060 sneakers, and Nike Jordan and Dunks.

In the wintertime, don’t forget to pair your sneakers with thicker socks for added warmth.

Chunky Boots

While I love sneakers, boots are bound to keep your feet that much warmer in the wintertime. For a streetwear vibe, go for boots that have chunky lug soles, which give boots a more rugged, laid-back feel. Any color works, but you can never go wrong with some classic black boots that tend to be the most versatile, especially with a short heel that you can wear day or night.

I suggest wearing a base layer like this under your sweater or sweatshirt for added warmth during the year’s coldest months.

Winter accessories that you can easily take on and off, like beanie hats, scarves, and gloves, are also must-haves for campus. These will help you stay warm outside, but once you get to class, you can quickly stash them in your backpack or coat pockets. A convenient winter accessory set that includes all three items is a solid investment for the semester and beyond.

Investing in the right type of footwear during the winter is crucial, especially if you’ll be walking outside across campus often. And unless you go to school somewhere that is warm and sunny year-round, you’ll want to be prepared for snow and rain come wintertime.

You’ll want a pair of winter-friendly leggings that are sleek on the outside yet have a warm, fleece-lined interior. The best part? This pair is also sweat-wicking, so they will keep you comfortable during any physical activity.

Wear a fleece pullover over your athletic top of choice; I’m into the color-blocked design on this one, which has a comfy fit that is easy to pull on after your workout. If you’re going to be outside, opt for an ultra-warm jacket like this mid-length goose-down puffer jacket with a hood that is both water-repellent and wind-resistant.

Don’t forget cold weather accessories like a knit beanie hat with a slouchy design that can be pulled down low to protect your ears from blasts of cold wind and some Merino wool-blend socks that are sweat-wicking (and cushioned!).
