    Wild business fact: can you believe Pepsi used to own a navy and once held military power in the Cold War?

    Most people know Pepsi and Coca-Cola as the titans of the soft-drink world, locked in an advertising and market rivalry for over a century. But can you believe Pepsi used to own a navy from one of the world’s largest military powers. Yes, for a short moment in history, Pepsi actually owned a one. Not a promotional rental, not a sponsorship deal—an actual naval fleet of warships and submarines.

    The story begins with Pepsi’s rise in the 20th century. Founded in 1893 and renamed Pepsi-Cola in 1898, the brand spent decades competing fiercely against Coca-Cola. Coke entered the international market first and dominated early advertising, food-service, and restaurant sales. Pepsi had to innovate just to survive, pioneering new bottle sizes, aggressive price competition, and lifestyle-driven marketing. By the 1960s and 70s, the “Cola Wars” were underway—celebrity endorsements, Super Bowl ads, and global brand campaigns turned soda into a cultural commodity.

    And this is where one of the strangest corporate-military stories ever recorded begins.

    In the 1950s and 60s, Pepsi was trying to break into new international markets. The United States and the Soviet Union were locked in global economic, political, and cultural competition. Coca-Cola, heavily associated with America, was unwelcome in the USSR—but Pepsi found a clever way around it: barter.

    The Soviet Union didn’t want to pay for cola in dollars, so they traded vodka instead. Tons of it.

    But the deal grew even stranger in 1989. When the USSR needed to renew Pepsi’s distribution agreement and vodka wasn’t enough as payment, another asset was offered—military ships scheduled for decommission. In exchange for Pepsi syrup, Pepsi temporarily took possession of:

    • Several warships
    • A small fleet of submarines
    • A cruiser

    For a brief moment, Pepsi owned what became the sixth-largest navy in the world. Pepsi quickly sold the vessels for scrap, but not before the company’s CEO reportedly joked to U.S. officials: “We’re disarming the Soviet Union faster than you are.”

    The naval fleet is long gone, but Pepsi’s global presence remains one of the most powerful in modern corporate history. Today Pepsi products are sold in more than 200 countries and territories. Billions of people worldwide consume their beverages and foods each year, from Pepsi and Mountain Dew to Doritos, Gatorade, and Lay’s.

    For a company who once bartered soda for warships, the growth of its global business shows just how far a brand can stretch. The Cola Wars may have calmed, but the legacy remains: clever marketing, ambitious expansion, and one of the wildest business deals ever made.

    Next time you crack open a can of cola, remember—there was a time when Pepsi wasn’t just battling Coke in grocery stores. It was once a player in Cold War naval strategy.

    The beverage behemoth has already made mass changes in culture…is cannabis next?

    It is almost a $100 billion company, in 200 countries (more than the 193 of the United Nations) and on average, 10,000+ Coca-Colas  are consumed every second. They are a world leader for beverage, change and growth. While they flirted with the cannabis industry in 2018, nothing has come over it. But with Constellation and Diageo being huge players in the industry, Coco-cola could change the cannabis industry dramatically.

    Most people forget, Coke was the leader in the bottled water movement. While other sodas and beverages mocked or feared the concept, they slipped in and premiered Dasani. The brand was dominate for years and only recently lost to Pepsi’s Aquafina. They have the political clout, distribution, and resources to reach mainstream audience in multiple companies. And they know how to talk to customers.

    The cannabis industry as grown some midsized companies, but it mostly filled with Mom & Pop businesses. While building a company they have to learn how to develop products for a mainstream audience which can be difficult. And they have to figure out running a business and distribution. Like the alcohol companies, Coke knows how to produce, market and move product, in a major way.

    With Gen Z moving away from alcohol toward cannabis, Coke is well positioned to guide this market into life-long habits. There is also an opportunity to play off the “healthy” side of the company (water) and market CBD drinks and microdosing opportunities.  Unlike rival Pepsi, who has had an on again/off again relationship with food, Coke has stuck strictly to beverages. WIth the slowly growing marijuana beverage market, Coke could make it a dominant player for consumers.

    From developing the six-pack carrier in 1923, commonly used today, to the Big Gulp, they know and understand consumers. While Tab failed to take off, Diet Coke is the number one seller today. They have the data to deliver what consumers want at a price which is attractive.

    The marijuana industry already has major mainstream players guiding the future of the legalization and popular use. Coke, with their trusted reputation by all generations, could take it to the next level.

    Coca-Cola is headed to the year 3000, and it’s using AI to get there.

    The soda giant unveiled its new Y3000 Coke on Tuesday as the latest concoction to come out of its Creations limited-edition flavor drops, a program that uses non-traditional flavors and branding targeted to engage a younger audience. This time, however, Coca-Cola turned to artificial intelligence to cook up a futuristic beverage.

    The brand used human insights to gauge what people would imagine a drink from the future would taste like, before recruiting AI to help with additional flavor notes and the product’s packaging design, a spokesperson explained to CNN.

    AI also created a mood board to inspire the can’s aesthetic, which features pixilated graphics of vibrant blue and pink bubbles. The bottom of the can reads “Co-Created with AI.”

    “We hope that Coca‑Cola will still be as relevant and refreshing in the year 3000 as it is today, so we challenged ourselves to explore the concept of what a Coke from the future might taste like—and what kind of experiences would a Coke from the future unlock?” Coca‑Cola’s Senior Director of Global Strategy, Oana Vlad, said in a press release.

    Y3000 comes in a zero-sugar option as well, and both options will be available for a limited time beginning on Tuesday.

    The new drop also comes with an interactive experience where customers can scan a QR code on the can that takes them to a portal that allows them to add photo filters that transform their pictures to the year 3000 with digitized effects.

    Snakehips

    You’ve made many hit singles like “All My Friends” (feat. Tinashe and Chance The Rapper) and “Cruel” (feat. ZAYN) and now “Show Me The Money” with Tkay. What’s the writing process like for your collaborations, especially for this new single?

    Yeah, we’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing artists over the years. When it comes to collaborations, we always start by getting in the studio with the artist and just having a chat. We like to get to know them, their style, and what they’re feeling at the moment. From there, we’ll usually start jamming and coming up with some ideas. For “Show Me The Money” with Tkay, it was a really fun and organic process. We just bounced ideas back and forth and landed on something we all loved.

    Speaking of collabs, your debut album, never worry, comes out in April and features names like BIA, Bryce Vine, and Duckwrth. What’s it like working with so many different genres of artists?

    It’s been an incredible experience working with all these different artists from different genres. We’re always looking for new sounds and new ways to push ourselves creatively, and working with artists from different genres really helps with that. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking at first because you never know how it’s going to turn out, but we’ve been really happy with the results so far.

    What can fans expect from this new album?

    We’re really excited for fans to hear this album. We’ve been working on it for a while and we’re really proud of how it’s turned out. There are a lot of different styles and sounds on the album, but it’s all very much Snakehips. We’ve got some upbeat tracks that we think people are going to love, but we’ve also got some more laid-back tracks that we think will surprise people. Overall, it’s a really fun and energetic album that we can’t wait for people to hear.

    How does “Show Me The Money” represent the rest of your album?

    “Show Me The Money” is definitely a good representation of the album as a whole. It’s upbeat, it’s fun, and it’s got that classic Snakehips sound.

    You’re looking forward to touring your new album – what’s your favorite part about going on tour?

    There are so many things we love about touring. Obviously, getting to perform in front of fans and seeing their reactions is amazing. But we also love getting to travel and see new places. We’ve been fortunate enough to tour all over the world, and it’s always an adventure. And of course, we love meeting new people and seeing new places. It’s really cool to see how our music has touched people’s lives, and we’re grateful for every opportunity we have to connect with our fans.

    Tkay Maidza:

    What was it like working with Snakehips for this song?

    It was great! I had the vocals already done and we were trying to figure out how we could collaborate and what ideas we both had for each other and they loved it! We went in together to tighten up the vocals and it was wrapped up so quickly. They’re so lovely so it felt like friends hanging.

    What was your favorite memory of making the track?

    I think my fave moments in sessions are when you know everyone in the room is happy and thinking “this bangs.” I’m usually dancing and being silly at that point.

    You’ve toured with some of the biggest names in the pop world like Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish, as well as sold-out headline tours. What’s your favorite part about performing live?

    Being able to experience the real energy of the song and how it hits other people the adrenaline is like no other!

    You’re one of the faces of YSL and collabed with brands like Nike and Stella McCartney. What’s your favorite way to incorporate fashion into your music career?

    I think what matters most to me is if it feels authentic to me – it’s really cool that I’m able to transform into so many different versions of myself. It’s been really cool to do high fashion and move into sports and activewear – they’re both equally important to me. Super grateful!

    What can your fans expect for the rest of 2023 from you?

    Album time! So many collaborations and a lot of new music – I’m really excited. The Snakehips track was just the beginning.
