    Inside Coachella 2024’s biggest moments

    [ad_1]

Coachella 2024 has officially wrapped after two back-to-back weekends of partying in the desert. No Doubt performed on both weekends, bringing out a surprise guest during their first show. Other celebrities also made headlines, including Kid Cudi and Doja Cat. Here are the top five moments from Coachella.

    1. No Doubt brings out surprise guest

No Doubt played on both Saturdays of the music festival. The band, led by Gwen Stefani, hadn’t performed together in nearly 10 years and sang their greatest hits like “Just A Girl,” and “Don’t Speak.” During their first performance, on April 13, they brought out Olivia Rodrigo for their song “Bathwater.”

Rodrigo, 21, posted about the momentous occasion on social media, saying it was “the coolest honor” to perform with the band. “I remember hearing bathwater for the first time when I had just started writing songs. it totally turned my world on its head and inspires me to this day,” she wrote.

During the second weekend, which kicked off on April 19, the band didn’t bring out any special guests – but Stefani had some waiting for her back stage. She was seen on the Coachella live stream embracing husband Blake Shelton and her 10-year-old son, Apollo, after the show.

    2. Doja Cat makes history

Doja Cat, 28, headlined both Sunday shows, becoming the first Black female rapper to do so in the festival’s 25-year history. In 2018 Beyonce became the first Black female artist to headline Coachella.

Doja Cat, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, sang her hits like “Paint The Town Red” and her new single “MASC” and brought out South African a cappella group The Joy to sing her song “Shutcho.”

She also brought out A$AP Rocky and 21 Savage. Sticking with her signature avante garde style, she wore long flowing hair and had hairy backup dancers for one of her performances.

    3. Kid Cudi breaks his foot

Kid Cudi performed during the festival on April 21, but his energetic performance ended abruptly. The rapper, 40, needed to be carried away by security after jumping off the stage. His performance was cut short, according to Entertainment Tonight, and he later confirmed his injury on social media.

“Hey guys, so I broke my foot today at the show. just leavin the hospital,” he wrote. “Never broken a bone before so this is all a bit crazy. nI wanna thank u all for ur concerns and well wishes!!  I love yall man.  I heard yall still ragin when I was offstage.  Made me smile big.”

    4. Lana Del Rey enters on a motorcycle

Lana Del Rey headlined the Friday shows, entering the venue on a motorcycle – and clips of the epic entrance went viral on social media. The singer performed hits like “Summertime Sadness” and “Young and Beautiful.” She also brought out Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste and Jack Antonoff, a frequent collaborator.

Her set, however, may have been too long. The City of Indio, where Coachella takes place, will fine the music festival $28,000 for breaking the city’s curfew after Del Rey’s set went 13 minutes over last week, TMZ first reported. CBS News has reached out to the City of Indio for more information and is awaiting response.

    5. Tyler the Creator’s special guests and Odd Future reunion

Tyler the Creator, who headlined the Saturday shows, brought out Donald Glover – aka Childish Gambino – and A$AP Rocky to perform with him during the first weekend. He also invited Earl Sweatshirt out on weekend two. The pair were part of the music collective Odd Future, a group of rappers and hip hop artists who collaborated together from 2007 to 2016.

Other performers also brought out special guests, including Renee Rapp, who brought out Kesha to sing her 2010 song “Tik Tok.”

Some famous faces were seen in the crowd at the festival – including Taylor Swift and Rihanna.

  • What’s behind the lack of enthusiasm for this year’s music festivals? – National | Globalnews.ca

What’s behind the lack of enthusiasm for this year’s music festivals? – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

The early signs were there. Several Australian music festivals scheduled for the Down Under summer months were cancelled. Then word started to come out of Britain about more festivals that wouldn’t happen because of various financial and logistical issues.

But the biggest wake-up call came when Coachella 2024 failed to sell out instantly like in years before. It took months to sell all the tickets for the first weekend; even as late as this past Thursday, tickets were still available for the second weekend, something that would have never happened in the past.

And it’s not just Coachella. There seems to be an overwhelming lack of enthusiasm for almost every major festival this summer. Lollapalooza has gone all hip-hop and pop. Except for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bonnaroo’s lineup doesn’t feel very exciting. Osheaga has Green Day, Noah Kahan, and SZA, but lacks the superstar punch of previous years. Same thing with Festival d’Été de Québec.

    Story continues below advertisement

There have even been moans about Glastonbury, a festival that sells out in hours, months before anyone knows who will be performing. “These are the best headliners you can get?” seems to be the dominant complaint. Oh, it’ll still be the mud-and-booze-and-drugs riot it always is, but I doubt that Glastonbury 2024 will make anyone’s top 10.

So what’s the problem? Why are so many major music events suffering from a “meh” problem? Several reasons.

    It’s the end of funflation

Going to a festival costs a lot. Between the price of a day or weekend pass, you need to get to the site (often a real hassle), find accommodation (if you’re not the camping sort or if that’s not available), and then reserve cash for food, drink, and merch.

TikTok is full of messages about food and drink prices (US$64 for two burritos and a juice and US$28 for a double vodka). That might have been doable in the era of funflation, that post-COVID time when many of us decided to make up for the lockdown years by spending whatever was necessary to travel and have fun. We may have reached our limits on that — at least as far as music festivals go.

    Story continues below advertisement

    Gen Z isn’t playing along

Boomers, Gen X and Millennials were all avid festival-goers. Gen Z? Maybe not so much. “Generation Sensible,” as they’ve been called, isn’t into the party lifestyle as much as their predecessors — at least they don’t see this as a priority. Even those who do go to a festival, a study says that just five per cent of Gen Z is excited about drinking alcohol or doing drugs.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world
sent to your email, as it happens.

This tracks with other things I’ve observed about this generation. They’re all about living healthy and engaging in social issues.

And although members of this cohort like hanging with their friends, they like to stay within their small circle, a comfortable network of like-minded friends. And this circle doesn’t have to be IRL; they can be virtual friends, people with whom they only interact online. It’s possible mixing in with large groups of strangers makes them feel uncomfortable.

    Story continues below advertisement

Meanwhile, Boomers, Gen X, and even many older Millennials are done with standing in a field for a weekend.

    There’s an interest rate problem

Festivals thrived throughout the 2010s when interest rates were low, making it easy for promoters to borrow the start-up capital to stage a festival. Those days are gone. Unless you have really deep pockets (or have access to Saudi Arabian money), you’re either being driven out of business or won’t even bother trying to start a festival.

We have a big music problem

I’ll say it for the one-thousandth time: The music industry has done an absolutely lousy job of creating new superstars for the 21st century when compared with decades past. The ones that do exist — Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, et al — don’t need the hassle and restriction of appearing at festivals. They can make oodles more money and have more control by launching their own headlining tours. For example, Bey was paid US$4 million for her 2018 Coachella gig in 2018. She can gross several times that for each show she plays when she tours alone.

    Story continues below advertisement

Heritage acts from the 1990s and earlier — think Madonna, Green Day, blink-182, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Tool, Pearl Jam — know this, too. They would rather go out on the road by themselves than be burdened with scaling down a show for a festival appearance. At the same time, the super-heritage acts like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and The Eagles are getting into their 80s. Think they want to spend a weekend at a festival? There are other older acts to choose from, but they’re (a) not going to get Boomers out of their houses; (b) not appealing to young festival fans; and (c) dying off.

So who’s left? Artists who in the past would be considered large cult acts. Lana Del Rey a Coachella headliner? I mean, she’s good, but this is Coachella slot once filled by the likes of Eminem, Guns N’ Roses, Lady Gaga, AC/DC, Radiohead, and Muse. Tyler, The Creator, one of the top names at Lollapalooza? Fred Again.. in the big font on the Bonarroo poster? Festival promoters need to figure out how to get these A-level performers on their side again.

Complicating matter is that Gen Z, which grew up with instant access to tens of millions of songs on Spotify, are hugely fickle when it comes to music. Are they into rock? Maybe today, but then tomorrow, it’ll be all about hip-hop. Or pop. Or EDM.

Big festivals are booked using the “green bananas” principle. The goal is to sign young, emerging acts that will hopefully be exploding just as the festival weekend rolls around. They may be in a small font on the poster when tickets go on sale but could move up a few points by the time the gates open. What results are festival lineups that are largely made up of second-, third-, and fourth-tier acts. Promoters need better crystal balls if they’re going to book acts that will appeal to a large number of Gen Zers.

    Story continues below advertisement

Music continues to get narrower and narrower when it comes to appeal. Today’s biggest acts are nowhere near as big as acts used to be back in the day (Taylor Swift and Beyoncé excepted). In the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, record labels prepped and promoted a few acts for the masses. Today, technology has lowered the entry barrier so low that anyone can release and distribute their music globally. The problem is that over 100,000 new songs get uploaded to the streaming music services every day.

There’s no centre to music anymore, no consensus, no act that everyone knows and can sing at least a few song lyrics. Ask any random dozen people to name songs by SZA.

So are festivals going extinct? Not the big ones. They’re well-funded and have enough history to keep the momentum going for a while. There are also many smaller specialized events that draw modest by diehard crowds.

Personally, I’d consider going to Cruel World in Pasadena, Calif., on May 11 to get my fix of classic alternative bands like Duran Duran, Blondie, Simple Minds, and Soft Cell. Sonic Temple in Columbus sounds perfect for metal and hard rock fans (Disturbed, Pantera, Slipknot, Judas Priest, Sum 41, Royal Blood, and a couple dozen more.) Las Vegas has Sick New World (System of a Down, Alice in Chains, Primus, Killing Joke, Lamb of God, and many more). Napa Valley’s Bottlerock has booked Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran, Stevie Nicks, and Queens of the Stone Age, among others. And if you’re an old emo kid at heart, When We Were Young will be back in Las Vegas this fall with My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan, and an army of others.

    Story continues below advertisement

Or you might like to take a music-themed cruise (Monsters of Rock, The 80s Cruise, Emo’s Not Dead, Rock the Bells, Headbangers Boat, Soul Train, The Outlaw Country Cruise, The Ultimate Disco Cruise, and the 700,000 Tons of Metal Cruise.

Festivals will be with us for a while. It’s just that they aren’t what they used to be, you know? Now get off my lawn.

  • Camila Cabello and Lana Del Rey Sing ‘I Luv It’ During Coachella Weekend 2

Camila Cabello and Lana Del Rey Sing ‘I Luv It’ During Coachella Weekend 2

    [ad_1]

Camila Cabello was the surprise guest artist for Lana Del Rey‘s headlining Coachella set on Friday night.

Del Rey temporarily left the stage after singing her song “Bartender” as Cabello launched into a surprise performance of her new single “I Luv It” from her forthcoming fourth studio album. Lana joined Cabello through some verses but mostly watched and danced from the balcony of her palace-like stage.

Cabello was backed by a crew of dancers who recreated the robotic choreography seen in the single’s matching music video which also features collaborator, Playboi Carti (Carti was not present on stage). Del Rey joined Cabello on the floor of the stage during Carti’s verse and placed her hands around Cabello’s waist as the two shared a playful spin.

“I luv it, I luv it, I luv it, I luv it,” Del Rey sang back to Cabello as the pop singer closed the song. She continued, “[Camila] is my girl, I have so much fun with her. I love this song and thank you so much angel, for coming and singing with me.”

Cabello responded, “This is an honor for me, you’re one of my favorite artists of all time. I love you so much.”

Del Rey’s week one Coachella performance welcomed recent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Jon Batiste, who again joined Del Rey again on Friday night. Both Antonoff and Batiste are also performing their own sets (Antonoff as the lead singer of the band Bleachers) at the festival. Billie Eilish also joined Del Rey who turned up for a surprise pair of duets of Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes,” and Del Rey’s “Video Games.”

    • Justin Bieber was trolled for appearing unimpressed by Taylor Swift’s “Karma” at Coachella.
    • The incident led to a variety of reactions on social media, with some users criticizing Bieber’s perceived lack of interest in Swift’s music.
    • Some speculated that Bieber’s reaction was due to his knowledge that “Karma” was about shading his friend/manager Scooter Brown and himself.
    • Despite the controversy, Bieber made a notable appearance at Coachella, performing a remix of “Essence” with Tems and Wizkid, marking his return to the music scene after a period of health struggles and a break from performing.

The incident was captured in a viral video where Bieber, accompanied by his wife Hailey Bieber, appeared uninterested when “Karma” was played. His expressionless face and lack of participation in the surrounding vibes drew attention and criticism from the internet community.

Some users speculated that Bieber’s apparent lack of enthusiasm was due to his knowledge that “Karma” contains lyrics that could be interpreted as shading his friend and manager, Scooter Brown, and possibly himself. This theory was based on the assumption that the song’s content could be seen as a critique of those who have wronged Swift, including individuals close to her.

  • Coachella Is So Back: 5 Performances I Wish I Saw Weekend One

Coachella Is So Back: 5 Performances I Wish I Saw Weekend One

    [ad_1]

I hate to say it, but all good people admit when they’re wrong. After attending
Coachella in 2022, I saw a dying franchise desperately trying to retain its grasp on relevancy. With lackluster Californian crowds who only go for the festival name and not the names headlining, outsiders often wonder why artists treat this as a Mecca for music.

Long gone are the days when girls’ outfits were chosen with Tumblr shots in mind. The bohemian chic style that Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus, and other attendees made famous began as “Coachella style.”

And when I got a taste of the coveted festival, I was beyond underwhelmed. Sure, the rich and famous were within reach…but I couldn’t have felt further away from them. I ended up with dust in my lungs and a week’s worth of exhaustion.

    Celebs stopped attending
en masse, the non-festival influencer events like Revolve Festival rose in popularity, and it became abundantly clear that no one cared about the music…it was all about their Instagram posts.

But what I’ve learned from live-streaming Coachella 2024 — and pouring over my social media and consuming every single piece of Coachella content there is — is that Coachella is back in a major way.

Sure, the festival is designed to give you an intense bout of FOMO…but all I kept hearing was how bad everyone thought the lineup was. How no one of note would be in attendance this year. How Coachella was surely done for…until it wasn’t.

It’s been every bit as star-studded and shocking as earlier years. We’ve had earth-shattering performances, surprises left and right, and even reunions…not to mention the iconic
    American Royal Couple sighting.

We had 5-star performances from headliners like Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat. Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo via their supergroup, Anti Up, confirmed rumors of a joint album.

After spending the weekend across the country on the wrong coast sobbing to my friends that I opted not to go this year, I put together my must-see lineup.

Here are the five performances I would’ve attended at 2024 Coachella Weekend One.

    Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan’s sheer star power has truly been surprising me. With a devout fanbase (just watch her set), you’ll immediately realize that we’re dealing with someone who is about to break through to a different level of stardom.

During her set, you’ll hear essential songs like “Good Luck, Babe!”, “HOT TO GO!”, and “My Kink is Karma.” But what’s more impressive is her stage presence, the way she commands the crowd in avant-garde makeup, big hair, and a bigger personality.

Songs like “Good Hurt” saw a 160% increase on Spotify…Don’t sleep on Chappell Roan. Before you know it, she’ll be performing at a much bigger stage.

Everything Always – John Summit & Dom Dolla

Not enough is said about a house music set at a festival. Sure, the headliners are great and deliver us our fix of rock, pop, or soul. But it’s always been the DJ’s who have my heart at the end of the night. They know how to get you dancing, to feel the beat down to your soul, and forget for a while.

We saw a lot of technical difficulties and underwhelming sets from various artists this weekend…but John Summit and Dom Dolla delivered a borderline flawless collaboration that perfectly exhibited both their greatest hits and EDM essentials.

There’s nothing better than watching an artist truly having fun on stage…so when two friends, Dolla and Summit, come together to display some of the best techno house out there, they do not disappoint.

Soon to be the pregame track for many, Dom Dolla and John Summit are two of the biggest names in house for a reason.

    No Doubt

Two words: jaw dropped. Coachella’s Main Stage has reunited long lost bands and supergroups like Blink-182 and Swedish House Mafia…but few have No Doubt’s impact.

After a year of music domination on TikTok, Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, and Adrian Young took the stage to bring punk rock back in all its glory. In their first performance since 2015, this band has the exact same 1995 energy when they released “Just a Girl.”

Bringing out Gen Z’s very own punk pop princess, Olivia Rodrigo, was a passing of the torch in many ways. Stefani and Rodrigo belted “Bathwater” side by side as Rodrigo sported low rise cargos and an “I <3 ND” tank. “Bathwater” saw a 430% increase in streams on Spotify following the performance.

Perhaps the most impressive performance comes from Stefani, who at 54 years of age pranced and throttled around the stage full force. Stefani embodied a whirlwind tornado that gave more stage presence and energy than a 19-year-old. She went full punk rocker mode, and it was gorgeous.

    Sabrina Carpenter

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n-SDAxb_tQ

I keep reminding my readers that Sabrina Carpenter is the one to watch this year. She’s got all the ingredients of your classic popstar: proven vocal talent (even a stint on Broadway with Renee Rapp in Mean Girls), the opener for Taylor Swift’s legendary Era’s Tour, a past love triangle scandal with aforementioned Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, and the latest It Boy, Barry Keoghan, falling over his feet for her.

Her Coachella performance only solidified that I’m right. Carpenter understands her audience, and knows how to bring in more fans. She’s candidly witty, overtly sexual in her euphemisms, and yet exudes an innocence and honesty in her music.

For the first time on a Coachella stage, Carpenter was able to belt out her emails i can’t send album. This tell-all set of songs details her relationship with Bassett, her perspective on the backlash, and shares refreshing insights into her life.

She had the cinema, the vocal ability, the wow-factor. No notes.

    Lana Del Rey

And while many prominent publications and, most notably, the Recording Academy will continue to turn their noses towards the genius of Lana Del Rey, the world watched anyway. Del Rey’s music has inspired the careers of thousands of budding artists, and it’s rare that she gets such a massive platform to perform it.

Arriving via motorcade, Lana Del Rey took the stage to perform hits like “Summertime Sadness”, “Ride”, and “West Coast” while dancers twirled from poles and swirled around Del Rey.

With guests like Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, and the one-and-only Billie Eilish, Del Rey flawlessly integrated tracks like “Ocean Eyes” and her own “Video Games” into her set.

Many will criticize the microphone issues or the lack of energy from the crowd (all factors that were out of the headliner’s control)…but it’s overwhelmingly clear from Lana Del Rey’s performance that her star far outshines any technical difficulties.

INDIO, CA—In a viral video clip that left fans fawning over the celebrity couple, Travis Kelce reportedly tossed Taylor Swift 50 feet across the festival grounds at Coachella Saturday night. “He picked her up and hurled her like it was nothing,” said 25-year-old Brooke Renny, just one of dozens of festivalgoers who captured cell phone footage of the Kansas City Chiefs tight end as he held the pop star over his head, spun 360 degrees, and then sent her hurtling over the crowd. “You could tell she was saying ‘Throw me! Throw me!’ into his ear, and then he did. He whipped her across the grounds so easily—it was so cute. She just went soaring over the heads of everyone in the crowd.” At press time, Renny was gushing over another viral video that showed Kelce spiking Swift into the ground.

  • Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Trade Sushi for Songs

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Trade Sushi for Songs

    [ad_1]

After singer Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, were spotted grabbing dinner at hyped LA restaurant Sushi Park, the chattering class was abuzz. Why is the star couple seen mainly at sushi spots? What did they order? And did this date mean that rumors that the duo was headed to Coachella were false? At last, we know the answers to these questions. First, sushi is delicious, so why not? Sushi Park is an omakase-only restaurant so they ate what they were given. And no, the rumors were correct, as the couple was seen at at least two of the music fest’s shows last night.

That last concern was a fair worry, though. Coachella 2024 kicked off in Indio, California on Friday afternoon, with a first-night headliner of Swift pal and collaborator Lana Del Rey. But around the time the once-mesh-masked singer was hitting the main festival stage, Kelce and Swift were in a West Hollywood strip mall, grabbing dinner at the beloved-by-celebs restaurant that proudly fails to serve standbys such as California rolls or salads. They were “Skippin’ Out On Coachella,” as TMZ put it, though the venerable online tabloid surely knows that the drive from WeHo to the Coachella Valley is two hours with reasonable traffic.

The couple made that trip on Saturday, though one of them likely knew the way better than the other. Kelce told Vanity Fair in 2023 that he has attended the festival every year since 2018, joined by a regular group of pals. Swift, on the other hand, hadn’t been to Coachella since 2016, when she arrived in a sharply retro platinum blonde do.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce watch Bleachers perform at Coachella on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

    Christina House/Getty Images

The pair rolled into the festival towards the end of day two, as documented by slews of social media-using fans. The couple were first spotted dancing just offstage during the 6:50 p.m. set by Bleachers, the band fronted by Swift producing partner and friend Jack Antonoff

The pair were later spotted in the crowd at Ice Spice‘s 8:30 p.m. set,  dancing to her performance of Swift/Ice Spice collab “Karma (Remix).”

Swift was content to remain on the sidelines on Saturday night, but who knows what the rest of the festival might hold. In addition to Sunday’s acts, there’s a whole second weekend of shows from April 19-21. With The Tortured Poets Department set for release on Friday (a word search Easter egg hunt is already afoot) and Swift’s Eras Tour on break until May, the possibilities seem endless.

Lana Del Rey Brought Disciple Billie Eilish to Her Coachella Resurrection

    [ad_1]

Lana Del Rey promised a resurrection for her headlining spot at Coachella this weekend— on her billboard posted on the way to the festival referenced her “death” after being crucified for her Saturday Night Live performance in 2012. However, she said nothing about bringing out her disciple Billie Eilish to sing “ocean eyes” and “Video Games.” And how could she? By the time they finished harmonizing their whispers, they were stunned by each other’s presence. “Get the fuck out of my face,” joked Eilish after the performance. The two continued to gush over each other, with Del Rey raising up her protege. She praised, “Yep, that’s the voice of your generation, the voice of our generation. I”m so fucking grateful she’s standing next to me right now singing my favorite song of hers.” Eilish replied by giving the flower (crowns) back to the woman who influenced her, “This is the reason for half you bitches existence, including mine.” She’s not wrong; thou shalt be saved listening to Lana Del Rey.

Lana Del Rey Welcomes Billie Eilish as Her Coachella Duet Guest, as Eilish Gushes Del Rey Is ‘the Reason for Half You Bitches’ Existence, Including Mine!’

    [ad_1]

Lana Del Rey had a couple of heavily favored cameos during her Coachella performance, welcoming recent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Jon Batiste, both of whom will be fronting their own sets later in the weekend — but also one far less easily guessed guest, in the form of Billie Eilish, who turned up for a surprise pair of duets.

Taking to a terrace overlooking the massive stage, the duo first joined forces on Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes,” then turned their voices to “Video Games.” Both songs represent the first real breakout hits in these artists’ respective careers.

The two traded fangirl notes as their joint appearance came to a close. Enthused Del Rey about her singing partner: “That’s the voice of our generation, the voice of your generation, and i’m so fucking grateful she’s standing next to me right now singing my favorite song.”

Eilish retorted, “Get the fuck out of my face,” as they both fell into laughter.

“This is the reason for half you bitches’ existence — including mine!” Eilish further told the crowd. “Lana Del Rey, you guys, come on!”

The emergence of Eilish onto the stage followed a lengthy turn by Batiste as he and Del Rey recreated “Candy Necklace,” a song they worked up together for Del Rey’s most recent album, 2023’s “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.” The song was nominated for best pop duo’group performance at the 2024 Grammys. For most of the tune, Batiste played piano while she kneeled atop the instrument, but after she stepped down toward the end, they began spontaneously trading vocal lines.

“Sometimes you need somebody else’s spirit to move with you, and that’s always going to be Jon Batiste,” said the headliner.

Following Eilish’s appearance, Del Rey was joined by her co-producer and co-writer of late, Antonoff, for a reading of “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me — but I Have It.” Or at least some version of her was joined by Antonoff: He was playing piano very definitely in the flesh, but she appeared as an oversized hologram, just for that one number. The track dates back to her “Normal Fucking Rockwell” album from 2019.

Her setlist included some live rarities, including opening with “Without You,” which fans say she has not performed since 2014, and her cover of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time,” which she hasn’t done since 2019 — possibly a nod to the fact that a contemporary iteration of Sublime is also booked for Coachella.

Del Rey didn’t need any of her guests to make an impression, most viewers on-site or watching via the YouTube livestream would agree. She had certainly one of the more memorable entrances and exits in Coachella history, riding in and out through the audience, via walled off sections splitting up the crowd, on the back of a motorcycle, sometimes standing and/or blowing kisses as she passed by. Her six dancers trailed her, also holding onto motorcycle drivers, in motorcades that lasted minutes.

The hour-and-a-half set was well received by the massive crowd, either in spite of or because of offering such different moods and musical fare than what had preceded it during the day. The live singing and instrumentation was just one obvious point of demarcation from some other Coachella artists seen throughout the day. Low on the highly aggro qualities emphasized by some other performers, the Del Rey show was all about gentle, if determined, feminine energy, with Del Rey and her female dancers and backup singers wearing dresses and singing softly or beauteously, while, of course, putting this low-key energy to use on the bold themes she’s famous for.

From the very first drone (or Steadicam) shots of her motorcades, on through to what almost counted as delicate pole dancing, to a succession of piano ballads in the second half of the set, her show was characterized by what might have been described a late-night vibe, even if it hadn’t started (on schedule) at 11:20 p.m. and lasted nearly till 1. That easygoing sense of summertime sadness is no easy thing to pull off in a climactic slot: Perhaps only Del Rey could turn in a headlining festival set this laid-back, or even sweet, and still utterly reassert herself as an alpha in the process.

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

    [ad_1]

Breaking news: it’s Friday. So that means we have a whole week’s worth of new music. After Billie Eilish basically broke the internet by announcing a new album this week, everyone’s wondering who else is gearing up to release some future Grammy nominees. My guess? Harry Styles. (Or is that just a wish?)

Either way, we have to focus on the present. While I’m overly ecstatic for it to be the weekend, I’m also equally excited to be listening to all these songs on Spotify. Plus, Coachella starts today, and I know a lot of you are going to need to add some songs to your pregame playlists.

As always, I’ve combed through every New Music Friday playlist, I’ve read all the press releases, and I’ve done my own research. Here are some of the best new songs to listen to that were released today. Let’s get listening!

    Sabrina Carpenter- “Espresso”

Sabrina Carpenter is having herself a year. Ahead of her first Coachella performance this weekend, she releases “Espresso”, a fun-loving hit single that makes you want to lose all your worries and just move. Carpenter is having fun with her life, and it reflects her music. Written in Paris, she was in her traveler mindset just appreciating what the world had to offer. One of my favorite releases today, “Espresso” is a certified banger.

    Sabrina told Zane Lowe,

“I don’t think I’ve ever gone into writing an upbeat, confident record being like, “I really want to write an upbeat, confident record.” I have to be in that headspace and I have to be in that mood. And this was one of those times in my life where it was just like, I just thought I was the shit in the moment.”

    Perrie- “Forget About Us”

Perrie Edwards may not be a familiar name by any means…formerly a leading member of Little Mix, Edwards’ vocal power set her apart from the crowd early on. “Forget About Us” is Perrie’s debut single as a solo artist, a pivotal song that’s both upbeat in melody and melancholic in lyricism.

Written alongside Ed Sheeran, she reminds us in the same track that although relationships don’t always last, they’re still dynamic moments in our lives that shape who we are. Edwards says,

“I look back on past relationships and do think happily about those times. Do I want to be there now? No. It didn’t work out that way and if it was supposed to be it would have happened. Relationships have been a huge part of my life and they’ve made me who I am now. I think it’s a nice sentiment to be honest about and it’s super relatable.”

Peter McPoland- “Speed of the Sound (of you)”

Peter McPoland is a one-of-a-kind talent in the music industry. A special force who can write, produce, and record a record by himself and have it sound flawless, McPoland has an ear for a hit track. As his prowess grows, the songs get better…which is exactly the case with “Speed of the Sound (of you).”

McPoland’s first song of 2024 doesn’t disappoint by any means. It’s a bop that’s worthy of playing over and over. Unique in its own way, Peter McPoland delivers yet another earworm-y song.

    Dua Lipa- “Illusion”

I’m getting a bit upset with Dua Lipa for not releasing any sort of ballad and declaring that her album would sound different than the rest…however, I can’t deny that her disco-pop style is great for partying. Although she hasn’t strayed far from her usual style, Lipa shows us she knows what it takes for a chart-topping record…and she’s sticking with what works.

“Illusion” is every bit the 80’s workout sound you know and love.

Future, Metro Boomin- “We Still Don’t Trust You”

Metro Boomin is the Jack Antonoff of rap, if that makes sense. A highly regarded producer and creator who can work with the best-of-the best and create a Grammy-nominated album every single time. Every time you hear that iconic “Metro Boomin want some more” intro, you know you’re getting a banger.

“We Still Don’t Trust You” is an absolute vibe. A song I could see myself driving on the highway to at midnight, it’s more beat-heavy than about lyricism. Plus, a few melodies from The Weeknd make this even more of a brooding, moody tune that just works.

    Maggie Rogers- “The Kill”

Maggie Rogers has gone for the kill with her new album, Don’t Forget Me. A songwriter to her core, Maggie Rogers is highly regarded as one of the best indie alt stars of our generation. This album deserves its own separate article, but “The Kill” is one of her best submissions.

About a relationship that has gone sour, Maggie Rogers reflects on how things used to be good…but now they’re just going for the kill.

    Chlöe- “Boy Bye”

Chlöe delivers an electric breakup anthem with “Boy Bye.” I immediately added this to my playlist because the song encapsulates being so done with a partner, needing to leave them because they don’t treat you right. She bids her boy bye with this upbeat R&B track, telling him to go back to his mother because she won’t even cry.

It makes me even more excited for her debut album, In Pieces. The world is in desperate need of an R&B diva who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is…and I think we’ve found her.

    Suki Waterhouse- “Fun”

New mother, Suki Waterhouse, is wasting no time getting back to her music. In “My Fun”, she yearns for a partner who loves her like she loves having her fun. A folksy rock track that is reminiscent of classic greats like The Beatles, “My Fun” is the perfect ending to this playlist.

Fun loving, scream worthy, “My Fun” is an easy listen. Suki Waterhouse makes no mistakes with her music.

  • Meet The World’s Hottest Boyband: August Moon

Meet The World’s Hottest Boyband: August Moon

    [ad_1]

Growing up a One Direction fan, I am brimming with unnecessary knowledge of four British (and one Irish) men. I have continued to follow
Harry Styles throughout his illustrious solo career, and I still watch their This Is Us documentary once a year. And in the world of boybands and sick obsession comes fan fiction.

Yes, I’m no stranger to the classic fanfic lore: your mother sold you to One Direction because she couldn’t pay her bills, or Harry is the emotionally unavailable soccer star at your school and you, dear Y/N, are the nerd assigned to tutor him. And some fanfics were so addictive that they were turned into films —
see: the After series by Anna Todd.

But now, we’ve been introduced to a new band in a new film that totally doesn’t ring any familiar bells: August Moon.

    Who Is August Moon?

August Moon is the fictional band in the new Amazon Prime movie,
The Idea Of You, directed by Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. Based on the novel by Robinne Lee, “The Idea Of You” was fashioned after Harry Styles and his rumored love for older women. The internet has already been abuzz comparing Galitzine’s Hayes Campbell to Styles- the patchwork tattoos, the One Direction-inspired photoshoots and mannerisms, and of course the British accent.

24-year-old lead singer Hayes meets 40-year-old Solene (Hathaway) at
Coachella (where else?) and sparks fly. If you want to read more about what happens in the trailer, check out our recap here!

    Just like
Daisy Jones & The Six,August Moon will be releasing their music on streaming platforms across the world. Their first song, “Dance Before We Walk”, was featured in the trailer today.

The song itself isn’t as bad as I anticipated, it’s reminiscent of British synth indie pop made popular by bands like The 1975. Singing alongside
Galitzine, there’s Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham, Vik White, and Dakota Andan. And it looks like that won’t be the last of August Moon!

The band has also just activated an Instagram account (and it already has over 5k followers), so it truly looks like they’re taking the Daisy Jones approach. The hype surrounding any band mirroring One Direction is huge, and it only amplifies when the lead singer is played by a current Hollywood heartthrob who’s seemingly in
    everything.

You can listen to “Dance Before We Walk” here:

MORE ABOUT THE IDEA OF YOU

Starring Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Rubin, Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld, Jordan Aaron Hall, Mathilda Gianopoulos, Raymond Cham Jr., Jaiden Anthony, Viktor White, Dakota Adan

    Genre Romantic Drama

Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

  • Mark Your Calendar: 6 Music Festivals Set to Rock 2024

Mark Your Calendar: 6 Music Festivals Set to Rock 2024

    [ad_1]

Look, concerts are great. I would love to see my entire Spotify Wrapped lineup live. And I’ve spent thousands of dollars on Harry Styles alone — judge me if you want, I don’t plan on stopping. But my wallet isn’t as enthusiastic.

That’s where the beloved music festival comes in. It’s the best opportunity to see a bunch of artists in the span of a few days. You either love them or you’re not built for them…and I fall somewhere in between.

A music festival is the equivalent of an appetizer sampler; you get to see some artists you normally wouldn’t spend money on, and you also get some of your classic favorite artists all on the same lineup. For example, I went to Firefly Music Festival to see Billie Eilish…and left loving The Killers.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and we are increasingly more open to the idea of leaving our homes, festival season is quickly approaching. Coachella, one of the world’s most famous (and potentially overrated) festivals, occurs every year in April and kicks off a slew of fun music festivals to attend.

The only issue is: how do you choose the best music festival for you? With over 50 festivals listed already this Spring and Summer 2024, it can be hard to choose. I like to check out the lineups and see which festivals have the most new artists for me to discover. Then, I take a look at where they’re happening and make my decision from there.

I’ve rounded up a few festivals happening in the US in 2024 that are both newsworthy and will get you to see the most relevant artists in the industry. Enjoy the food, the shopping, the arts, and the acts!

    M3F Fest

    Where? Phoenix, Arizona

    When? March 1-2, 2024

Who? Dominic Fike, Duke Dumont, Hippo Campus, Gorgon City, SG Lewis, Dayglow, DRAMA, and more.

What? A music festival thrown by non-profit, The M3F Fund, where 100% of proceeds go to charities like Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Arizona Helping Hands, and more. It’s a great way to give back while having fun with your friends and family, and their lineup is always good.

    Coachella

    Coachella

    Where? Indio, California

    When? April 12-14 + 19-21, 2024

Who? Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat, Lil Uzi Vert, John Summit, Dom Dolla, Jon Batiste, Bleachers, No Doubt, J Balvin, and more.

What? The festival where spotting an influencer or two will be the highlight of your trip. You probably won’t make out with Timothee Chalamet, but you definitely will eat some overpriced food. However, you have to go to Coachella once in your life. This year marks the reunion of No Doubt — and perfect timing, since TikTok has revived their music for Gen Z.

    Shaky Knees Music Festival

    Shaky Knees 2024

    Where? Atlanta, Georgia

    When? May 3-5, 2024

Who? Noah Kahan, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Young the Giant, Girl in Red, and more.

What? A great mix of indie and rock acts spread throughout the weekend. I would travel far and wide to see Noah Kahan ahead of his summer arena tour, and this is a great excuse to do so.

    Hangout Music Festival

    Hangout Fest

    Where? Gulf Shore, Alabama

    When? May 17-19, 2024

Who? Zach Bryan, Lana Del Rey, Odesza, The Chainsmokers, Cage The Elephant, Renee Rapp, Dominic Fike, Dom Dolla, and more.

What? One of the most diverse music festivals in terms of genre…Hangout Music Festival has everything- from popular EDM acts to country to pop. It’s also one of the few tour dates Lana Del Rey has right now, so go see her while you can.

    Governor’s Ball Music Festival

    Gov Ball 2024

Where? Randall’s Island, New York City

    When? June 9-11, 2024

Who? Post Malone, The Killers, 21 Savage, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, Peso Pluma, Sexxy Red, Renee Rapp, Labrinth, Goth Babe, and more.

What? Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Gov Ball is an iconic festival to start the summer. This year’s lineup is worth your time with festival favorites like The Killers and Post Malone, and exciting additions like Goth Babe and Sabrina Carpenter.

    Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

    Bonnaroo 2024

    Where? Manchester, Tennessee

    When? June 13-16, 2024

Who? FISHER, Post Malone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fred Again…, Maggie Rogers, Cage The Elephant, Cigarettes After Sex, Diplo, Two Friends, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lizzy McAlpine, and more.

What? Bonnaroo hosts some of the hottest musical acts in the industry year after year. This year’s lineup includes Megan Thee Stallion, Renee Rapp, T-Pain, Sean Paul, and more. I couldn’t think of anything better.

  • Sea.Hear.Now 2023 Proves Rock Is Here To Stay

Sea.Hear.Now 2023 Proves Rock Is Here To Stay

    [ad_1]

Asbury Park, New Jersey is not just a popular shore destination, but a Mecca of music history. Home of iconic venues like The Stone Pony- where Bruce Springsteen got his start in performing- thousands of people flock just for The Pony alone…but every September, the seaside city gathers to celebrate rock and roll for Sea.Hear.Now.

Sea.Hear.Now is the perfect ending to your summer for multiple reasons. It gives you an excuse to enjoy the sun and the sand one more weekend post Labor Day, even better that you throw all of your favorite artists together. I’ve always said that festivals are the best bang for your buck as a music fan- you spend a few hundred dollars to see at least 10 artists over multiple days with general admission seating, as opposed to that $2,000 Taylor Swift ticket.

I’ve been to a few festivals spanning from Firefly in Dover, Delaware to the infamous Coachella in Indio, California. I’ve seen bands I may not have purchased single show tickets to, and I’ve become fans of artists just by happening upon their performances at these events. Festivals are great ways to try out new music without throwing all your money away- and there’s no better way to get a feel of an artist than seeing them live.

This was my first year at Sea.Hear.Now, and it didn’t disappoint. For fans of older music and new music alike, there’s truly something for everyone here. Located on the actual beach (so bring sand-appropriate shoes), Sea.Hear.Now features clothing pop-up shops, local food and drink vendors, and much, much more. Here are the highlights:

The Best Performances of Sea.Hear.Now 2023

    The Killers at Sea.Hear.Now 2023

    Chris Phelps

I’d be crazy if I didn’t start with what we all came for: the music. I hadn’t seen most of these acts live before, but I have admittedly seen (and worshipped) The Killers at Firefly a few years ago. But my reviews are as follows:

    • Sheryl Crow- if I can look half as good as her, I will consider myself successful. My first headline thought was: Breaking News: Sheryl Crow Has Still Got It. She has a powerful voice, knows how to rock the guitar, and “Soak Up The Sun” will always be famous.
    • Greta Van Fleet- one word: wow. Everyone compares them to Led Zeppelin, and I was so shocked by the vocal range and witty banter they provided. I became an instant fan.
    • Royal Blood- not only did I get the chance to interview the lovely British duo this weekend, but also see these two rockstars. Kicking off their tour, Royal Blood did not disappoint.
    • The Killers- I can’t say enough about this band and how amazing they are live. They opened with my favorite song of all time, “Mr. Brightside,” and I astral projected to the moon. Ask anyone there, The Killers are a must-see whenever they’re in town, bringing up a fan every time to play drums with them. Always electric, never a let down.

Greta Van Fleet at Sea.Hear.Now 2023

    Pooneh Ghana

    • Stephen Sanchez- Sanchez creates story lines with his music, and to hear it seaside felt ethereal. Hits like “Until I Found You” sound better at the beach.
    • The Beach Boys- First of all, they brought out John Stamos as their drummer (instant win). But Mike Love and Bruce Johnston brought the house down, with Love’s son also helping them out. I loved every second of it.
    • Mt. Joy- Philly’s finest, Mt. Joy sounds just as good live as they do on your phone. Something about Mt. Joy at Sea.Hear.Now just makes sense.
    • Weezer- Weezer was another highlight of the festival- playing all of their hits and sounding identical to their soundtracks. “Beverly Hills” and “My Name is Jonas” were some of my faves.
    • The Foo Fighters- The Foo Fighter fans were plentiful, belting out every word. They didn’t miss a beat, and were the perfect ending to a rock-filled weekend.

    The Food at Sea.Hear.Now

At any given festival, the food looks better than it tastes. It’s just a fact, no matter what they try and tell you. However, I did have my first Korean-style corn dog, which was essentially a giant mozzarella stick with a hot dog in the center and sauce on top…and it was delicious despite the fact that it would have sent a Pilgrim into cardiac arrest.

The drinks were moderately priced compared to other festivals I’ve been to, there were plenty of free water stations (as opposed to Coachella), and I need to give a special shoutout to the Hendricks Boat Bar. They had the best triage of Hendricks drinks (I don’t even like gin and these were delicious) curated by Erik Andersson, who also gave us a great tour.

    The Experience at Sea.Hear.Now

    Cam Richards

    Fiona Mullen

Sea.Hear.Now has a lot to offer: picture opportunities, specific drink tents like Tito’s, Twisted Tea, etc., and even shopping opportunities. And for once, I want to emphasize the perks that VIP tickets could get you: your own viewing area close to the stage so it’s never a bad view, access to festival merchandise (not bands, however), your own bathroom area and food/bars, TV’s and a lounge. It’s truly worth the upgrade.

There’s even a surfing competition, which honestly worried me a bit since there was a hurricane but I’m not the professional. But what I loved about this festival is it stayed true to Asbury Park’s roots, featuring everything the small city had to offer.

No matter what, it’s a more relaxed vibe compared to the intense marathon that Coachella is. You have a wider age range of people, all dressed however they want (from festival chic to football jerseys on Sunday). But that’s the beauty of Sea.Hear.Now: come as you are, all will be welcomed.

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music Releases Today

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music Releases Today

    [ad_1]

I write this fresh out of the Barben-heimer challenge, where I spent 5 hours in a movie theater. It must be a world record sitting through that 3 hour Oppenheimer, and the first thing I do when I get home is rush to my computer. I exited the theater on Friday morning just after midnight, so I had a whole world of new music waiting for me.

We have former One Direction member turned R&B crooner ZAYN making his return to music for the first time since his Icarus Falls album in 2018. Five years later, he’s here with his first single, “Love Like This”, an R&B/pop fusion song that is perfect for summer. This big chapter was opened with an interview on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, where fans welcomed back a normally reserved ZAYN who was ready to open up.

Not only do we have ZAYN, but the Barbie soundtrack is officially released to our ears…and after seeing the movie, it’s lived up to the hype. This summer has been filled with great music from artists we know and love, and some new ones as well. Here are my favorite new songs released Friday, July 21!

Various Artists – Barbie The Album

If it’s produced by Mark Ronson, then it’s a guaranteed smash hit. Which is why we knew the Barbie soundtrack was going to be chart-topping in its own right…and with a lineup that makes Coachella salivate, it’s a no skip album. Dua Lipa, who is also Mermaid Barbie, has the main single with “Dance The Night”, as well as tracks from industry titans like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, The Kid LAROI, Dominic Like, Ava Max, Khalid, and Tame Impala.

It has everything – music ranging from disco, to squeaky clean pop, and inspiration drawn from all of Barbie’s iconic eras. It’ll make you want to laugh, cry, jump, and sing, just like the movie.

    ZAYN – “Love Like This”

ZAYN found his sound early on with the release of his debut solo album, Mind of Mine. It was everything that he couldn’t do in his One Direction days. After a few years of in-between, including a quietly released Icarus Falls, he’s back. “Love Like This” is perfect for this time of year – punchy in the right places, smooth enough to put us at ease in this sticky heat, and a good beat to get you out your chair.

It’s a delicious taste of what’s to come from the soulful singer who has a vocal range that even the best singer’s envy, and I personally can’t wait for more.

    Tanner Adell – BUCKLE BUNNY

Tanner Adell is rapidly rising in the country music scene because she’s unique, she’s edgy, and she can make a killer track. Taking the world by storm with previous hit singles like “Buckle Bunny” and “Trailer Park Bunny”, Tanner Adell has fans buzzing with her recent mixtape, BUCKLE BUNNY.

In the midst of a country music festival circuit including venues like CMA Fest, Adell is on the brink of combining rap and country in a refreshing way that makes people replay her songs over and over.

    Grace VanderWaal – “Boyfriends”

Grace VanderWaal can do it all – a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist – she’s one of the most impressive young talents we have. Her newest single, “Boyfriends”, is about lacking those intimate friendships you see projected in movies or in books. It’s about feeling like you’re more of a boyfriend to anyone than a close friend, the frustrating in-between feeling in friendships where you aren’t sure of their loyalties.

VanderWaal, known for her ukulele talents, is the queen of raw honesty embedded within her lyrics. Her unique melodies, catchy bridges, and emotional choruses can make anyone a fan. “Boyfriends” is the perfect example of Grace’s magic.

    Big Boss Vette – RESILIENCE

Fans have been waiting years for Big Boss Vette’s debut album. The St. Louis rapper has been making hits forever, but this is her first larger body of work and it does not disappoint. There was a lot of pressure for Vette, who had fans with big expectations, but RESILIENCE is one of those albums you’ll want to have on loop this summer.

It’s high-energy, with a fitting feature from Gloss Up on “Fly Shhh”. These seven brand new songs have star-quality melodies and hooks that will be stuck in your head forever. It’s the perfect debut album for Big Boss Vette.

  • John Newman Talks New Single “Hold On To My Love”

John Newman Talks New Single “Hold On To My Love”

    [ad_1]

John Newman can do it all: he’s a singer, songwriter, DJ, and producer whose helped create club hits like “Blame” with Calvin Harris and “If You Really Love Me (How Will I Know)” with David Guetta…plus a plethora of his own repeat-worthy tracks like “Love Me Again” and, most recently, “Hold On To My Love.”

Newman found instant success with his Calvin Harris collaboration, which broke the world record for the most-streamed song in one day and the first track ever to hit 10 million streams on Spotify in less than a week. From that point on, we knew that John Newman could provide hit after hit song that would make us want to get up and dance.

And while he’s worked on collabs with big names in the dance industry like Guetta, Harris, Kygo, Sigala, and Galantis…his debut album, Tribute, was proof that he could do this all on his own. His live performances are equally enrapturing, where he takes everyone in the audience on a borderline spiritual journey through sound and lights.

After performing at huge festivals over the world like Coachella and Glastonbury, and a looming Tomorrowland MainStage performance this summer, John Newman is proving why he’s one of the most promising DJ’s in the game. Now, with his new single “Hold On To My Love,” fans can dance and sing along to the talented producer’s track. You can listen here:

John Newman sat down with Popdust to catch up on everything- from his successful collabs that won him BRIT awards and major accolades. Check it out below!

PD: You’ve entered a new era for you as a DJ, producer and singer/songwriter…what are you most excited about?

JN: I’m really excited about my live show, I feel like I’m breaking boundaries within myself. Also being signed to Tomorrowland Music and working with the guys there. I feel like it’s totally different to anything they’ve done before so it’s a good collaboration between the two of us trying to create something that’s completely new and energetic and makes people feel euphoric. It’s taking time butI finally feel like it’s starting to get there now and it’s really exciting.

PD: How would you describe your sound today? Are there any musical genres you’ve not yet explored that interest you?

JN: From the age of about six I’ve studied and listened to almost every genre, and I think that was so important to me. I’m not bothered exactly what genre, for me it’s got to have that emotional connection, that thing that moves me. I’ve explored almost every genre, whether I’ve put them into all productivity probably not, but I try not to think in genre brackets. To be honest that’s how I made ‘Love Me Again’ and I think the soul reference came from what other people’s brains accepted but really, I had multiple genres influences whilst creating that song.

PD: Your single “Hold On To My Love” started as a voice note recording backstage in Ibiza…can you talk a little more about how this turned into your song we hear today? And this inspiration behind it.

JN: I’m probably the worst person to write in the studio with. I find writing in the studio so difficult. I have to be out and doing things and then I get so many ideas whilst driving in my car, shopping, or out walking, or all the time in the shower. I think they’re always the best ideas and in that situationthat was just one of those ideas that happened there and then. It’s so easy once you have a melodyand a lyrical idea to then start making music to it. I continued the writing of ‘Hold On To My Love’ and worked with some amazing guys along the way, I worked with one of the guys from Major Lazer on it. It was a long one but when I listen to it now and play it live, I think it was definitely worth it. In the end it really moves me and that’s why I do this job.

PD: You’ve had big collaborations with artists like Calvin Harris for “Blame” and David Guetta for “If You Really Love Me (How Will I Know)”…what’s the ‘behind the scenes’ process of working with these huge artists on such collaborations?

JN: I think we’re all here for one reason, to feel something emotive and to succeed. Music is easy when you all have that mindset but mainly when you have something that makes you feel that emotive way. With the David Guetta collab, I was playing with a Whitney Houston backing vocal recordingtrying to get something cool out of it. Again, in the shower I came up with the idea of the topliner and melody and put it down as a ballad. Then, I sat in the studio with MistaJam and Ollie Green and we sent it to David Guetta and he was all over it, jumped on it, and produced it up.

With Calvin it was a lot different, we met, I was standing outside his studio and had bird sh*t all overhis car and he was laughing about that, and he caught me laughing. After my session I then reached out to him after via Twitter DM and said we should work together and that’s kind of how it started. I then wrote the rough idea for ‘Blame’ in the house at Christmas on my laptop, recorded the vocal into my laptop microphone which at that time was really wasn’t very good but it actually stayed on the record for like six months as the vocal recording because it gave it an edge.

These collaborations can all happen in different ways. It normally starts with me having an idea andsending it through to whoever. It’s easier to start with the organic idea that then becomes the dance song, but the most important thing is creating something that people want to sing-along to in a crowd.

PD: What are your three tracks on repeat for summer?

JN: I’ve got some good ones…First up, ‘Hypnagogic’ by Love Regenerator, Calvin Harris. The next one is‘So Much In Love’ by D.O.D and finally, ‘Drifting’ by Tiësto.

PD: You’ve performed at major festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury. What’s your next bucket-list festival and/or event? And what makes it so special?

JN: To set the scene, we’d be completely renovating our house and, in all honesty, I pretty much had a mental breakdown during lockdown. I stopped music completely, I don’t think I opened my laptopfor a year. Then, I felt inspired again and felt better mentally, so I opened my laptop and started thisdance project which I felt super excited about and throughout that whole period of time I was like I’m going to play the Tomorrowland Mainstage with this and now I’m about to do that in a few weeks so that’s number one and that’s crazy exciting. The other ones that I have on there are Ultra Miami and Ultra Europe. Creamfields is another big one I have in my head. Ushuaïa, Ibiza was another one that I’ve ticked off. I think it really does work picturing in your head what you want andfinding a way to achieve that

PD: What’s your favourite song to perform live right now? and why?

JN: I’d actually say my current single ‘Hold On To My Love.’ I took part of a song called ‘Origin’ by Arminvan Buuren and made my own version of the drop and then used that together with my new singleall as one and I can’t explain what it’s like. It’s like big explosive progressive house with interstellarand at the same time a ballad song. The emotions are quite overwhelming every time I play it and Ithink it’s such an amazing and special way to end my show. Talking of manifestation, I said that I was going to close my Tomorrowland Mainstage show with this track and that was before the show was even booked and that’s what I intend to do.

PD: What’s next for you in 2023? Any new music coming out?

JN: I’ve got a really exciting big collab coming up. I’m constantly working on new music and it’s something I’m working hard to get right. It is a struggle at the moment working out who I am in this climate and what I’m doing. I want to try experimental things; I was actually playing around with theidea of releasing just an instrumental track the other day. So that’s where I’m at, I’m constantlyworking at it because I want a really big year.

  • The Iconic Hardwell Returns To Music

The Iconic Hardwell Returns To Music

    [ad_1]

What can you say about a 2x World No. 1 DJ, who has been leading the electronic dance world for over a decade since he was only 14, who has officially remixed tracks for huge names in the music industry like Rihanna and Calvin Harris, that hasn’t already been said? That’s the case with the legendary Hardwell, who at 25, is just getting started.

As both a producer and DJ, Hardwell made his mark early on as a highly sought-after Dutch phenomenon who quickly won World’s No. 1 DJ in 2013, early on in his career. After remixing hit singles and sharing his own smash collabs with artists like Austin Mahone, Jay Sean, and Jason Derulo…you’d be surprised to learn what Hardwell has accomplished, accolades that take most artists multiple decades to be handed. But Hardwell is different.

He’s collaborated with fellow DJ’s like Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, and AfroJack. He’s performed at the biggest EDM festivals in the world like Ultra, Tomorrowland, Coachella, and EDC Las Vegas. And while he took a 3 and a half year hiatus from releasing music and hitting the stage, 2022 Ultra proved to be his comeback.

Since then, fans have anxiously awaited Hardwell’s next move. Which has included his REBELS NEVER DIE era, remixing tracks by David Guetta and Benny Benassi, plus releasing original tracks of his own. You can check out REBELS NEVER DIE here:

It’s been a crazy year for Hardwell, but it’s safe to say he’s back. Hardwell sat down with Popdust to talk about what we can expect next, and what we’ve missed since we last saw him!

PD: You took a 3.5-year hiatus from music before returning to the stage for a surprise performance at Ultra last year…has your process of making music changed since then?

H: Yes, but not so much in a technical approach but more, what’s the right word, holistic. So, the big change has been about time and ensuring I give myself enoughof it focus on being creative. Without the pressure to be at the next airport, meeting,or wherever needed. I know, it sounds so simple but when you’re flying between multiple cities each week it can be difficult to properly get your head into a space that inspires creativity. So, for me, since the time away from touring, my priority now is to maintain the right balance between being on the road and at home in my studio.

PD: What have been your favorite songs to remix so far?

H: I’ve always loved remixes. It’s a part of the dance scene which since the verybeginning I’ve been hooked on so when it comes to being a remixer on some else’smusic, it always excites me to see what new direction I can take the song in. I’vehad the honour to be invited to remix some incredible acts, who I respect, likeColdplay, Moby, The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris and US. But honestly, the one that really stands out is my remix of ‘Ocarina of Time’s Gerudo Valley’ for The Legend of Zelda. I can still feel the young gamer inside me grinning so hard at that one, like “Yes, we did it!”

PD: Are there any artists that inspire you or one’s you’d like to collaborate with in the future?

H: Of course, acts like Dr Dre, The Prodigy, Pharrell Williams, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem, and many others would be some others, are on my producer bucket list, but away from established acts, I’m actually really inspired by the artists coming through on my label Revealed Recordings. Seeing new artists like VINNE, Tim Hox developing in the studio, making music, and having that crazy hunger to succeed.Reminds me a lot of when I first got into it and it’s inspiring.

PD: You’ve teased you have a new single collaboration coming up. Can you share any more details, whose it with and what’s the name of the song?

H: Yeah, so the track is called ‘ANYBODY OUT THERE’ and it’s a vocal-driven anthem with Azteck and Alex Hepburn. I wanted to create a kind of hybrid song thatconnected with my current harder-edged style, but also leans into the vocal stuff Ilove in music. I needed something big that fits a Hardwell set and needed to find atrack that would have all the right emotions, the right chords, and the perfectbalance in arrangement to fit what I was after. So, this collaboration was focused on doing that and I’m so, so happy with the final outcome. I think the three of us crushed it.

PD: You recently completed an exciting North American tour with a stop at The Brooklyn Mirage, and have performed at some of the world’s biggest events like Ultra Music Festival, Coachella, EDC, and sold-out Madison Square Garden…what’s your favorite part about performing your music live?

H: It’s almost an indescribable feeling to be on stage. The connection with the crowd, playing music you love and sharing new/old tracks you’ve poured lots of time into creating to then have the crowd dance or sing them back to you. It’s such a surreal experience and such an amazing buzz to share it with the fans.

PD: You closed your 2022 REBELS NEVER DIE era with a deluxe edition followed by several new singles in 2023 like remixing David Guetta’s version of Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction”, and a run of original singles like‘Take Me Away’, ‘Balança’, ‘Twisted’, and ‘Sloopkogel’. What is it like dropping all these projects over varying genres? Do you have a favorite right now?

H: It’s exciting because its exactly what I wanted, which is to be completely free ofany pressure to make a certain type of sound. I want to just explore whatever stylefits me at the time, whether it’s techno, electro, trance, big room, or whatever. Ican’t say I have an out-and-out favourite, because every song is special in its ownway. But I’m super proud of my recent song ‘ACID’ with Maddix and Luciana, simplybecause I had the idea of making an acid song for so long, but I wanted to make itan acid crossover song. There’s a lot of acid underground songs but I needed an acid song that had the right balance of a techno song and an EDM song to work in a Hardwell show, and I wanted it to have a vocal, so it had more of a crossover appeal

PD: What’s next for you this year? Any upcoming music or perhaps an album?

H: There’s no new album planned. I said to myself right after REBELS NEVER DIE was completed, that I wanted to go and have some fun collaborating with otherartists I’d admire. The album was a big solo project, so it felt like a nice change todo a bunch of collaborations and originals. I’ve got a ton of new music coming up,like the next track ‘ANYBODY OUT THERE’ which I mentioned. So it’s definitely goingto be a busy year both in the studio and on the road with a summer full of festivalsplanned..

  • Summer Fashion Trends 2023: The Hottest Clothes For The Hottest Months

Summer Fashion Trends 2023: The Hottest Clothes For The Hottest Months

    [ad_1]

Today, writing this article, I feel hopeful. Why, you ask? Because I’ve finally cycled through enough of these Seasonal Fashion Trends articles to get to summer! Fall, winter, spring — we’ve made it through the year. Though some trends, have not (sorry, apres-ski chic).

That’s right, I sit outside writing this basking in balmy, 80 degree weather. The sun is indeed shining, the birds are indeed chirping. I suddenly have a sense of purpose again – even if that purpose is to write about Summer 2023 fashion trends.

This summer, prepare to stick with what you know: light fabrics like linen, knitwear with a special emphasis on crochet pieces, and lots of sheer moments. Fashion houses are loving rich, royal colors like red and purple as your pop from the coastal neutral vibes we love in the summer.

Big trends to look out for this summer 2023?

    Asymmetrical hemming

Okay, I’ll admit. This was a trend that sent me straight back to the Tumblr era of 2013, and not exactly in a good way. But don’t fret!

They’re all trends we’ve known and loved in the past…but think more elevated. Asymmetrical hems no longer indicate high-low skirts (what I like to call the mullet skirt, business in the front…party in the back). Think diagonal hemlines that feel more like a sexy slit in the leg than the previous asymmetric hemline trend.

    Underwear as the staple

This is one of those circumstances where it’s what’s underneath that counts. Now, it’s no longer embarrassing if your thong is showing through your dress, it’s trendy! Some of these summer fashion trends go hand-in-hand, dresses are popular with your shapewear showing underneath. The more bold go braless.

    Full crochet

I preached this trend in my 2023 spring fashion trends article, but it’s never more prevalent. We are going full 70’s vibes with crochet outfits, which arguably is the most expensive trend in this list. Crochet pieces are hard to make and often unique, so they are going to cost more.

Nothing makes you feel more barefoot Coachella frequenter than crochet. Pants, dresses, jumpsuits, sets, bags, headbands, head scarfs, you name it. Everyone will be wearing crochet.

    Purples and reds

While whites and tans are the dominant colors of the summer to contrast and complement your sun kissed skin, everyone loves to wear bright colors too. Muted pastels like seafoam green and bubblegum pink are a thing of the spring, so make room for royal reds and purples.

Maybe, deep down, it’s the Taylor Swift effect, with everyone honoring her Red and Speak Now albums…who knows?

    Cut-outs

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen cutouts in our clothing. Since the weather is warm, we can get creative with the amount of skin we show…and where we show it. The peek-a-boo cutouts can be featured in dresses, skirts, pants, and shirts.

What Should I Wear This Summer?

After watching White Lotus and manifesting my island getaways…I’ve also seen a focus on resort-wear and espadrilles. It’s about ditching your cardigans and sweaters for kimonos of all lengths, whether it be floor-length lace or knee-length satin.

Ultimately, wear what’s going to make you feel comfortable. For me, it’s about staying cool during the day but with enough coverage to get me through the wind at night. But don’t say I didn’t warn you on what was trendy!
