The Cleveland Animal Protective League hopes to open space to animals affected by this week’s devastating hurricane in Florida. But they need the community’s help to do so.

Due to the minimal space, the Cleveland APL hasn’t been able to take in animals from other shelters in nearly two years as it deals with its own capacity issues. But given the unprecedented events caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida, the APL is doing as much as possible to lend a helping hand to Florida shelters.

“During this critical time, we are committed to supporting our friends working in Florida animal shelters by providing a safe haven for their adoptable animals,” said Sharon Harvey, President & CEO of the APL.

This weekend, on Friday Oct. 11 and Saturday Oct. 12, the Cleveland APL will hold a fee-waived adoption event for all adult cats and dogs, in addition to a special $50 adoption promotion for kittens. The hope is to open more cage space for adoptable animals living in impacted areas of Florida. This will lead to more cage space in Florida shelters for displaced animals in impacted areas. The Bissell Pet Foundation, an animal welfare organization, will coordinate the transportation of these animals from Florida to Ohio.

The APL is urgently seeking volunteer foster families who can temporarily house and care for current animals who are not ready for adoption.

“It’s difficult to imagine the tragedy unleashed on the communities in the path of these devastating storms. Both humans and animals are suffering,” said Harvey. “We urge our animal loving Cleveland community to help by adopting or fostering animals who are in our care now, so we can create enough space to bring shelter animals from Florida to the APL which, in turn, will allow them to help animals who have been displaced from their families by these storms.”

After years of news that local shelters are at or beyond capacity, now is the time to act to do your part and bring a new furry friend into your household — and at a bargain.

It’s ‘Clear the Shelters’ time, the 10th annual nationwide event in collaboration with NBC that offers discount adoption rates across the country, including at the Cleveland APL.

The project launched in 2015 and since then has been the catalyst for more than one million pet adoptions, raising more than $4.5 million in the process. Last year, more than 158,000 adoptions occurred during Clear the Shelters.

“If you’ve been considering adoption, now is the perfect time.” Sharon Harvey, President & CEO of the Cleveland APL, said in a press release. “We have many loving and deserving cats, dogs, and other animals, including birds, who are eagerly waiting for new homes. We are so grateful to every adopter who helps us ‘clear the shelter’ by welcoming a new pet into their home, as there will always be another animal in need of help.”

Through Sunday Aug. 18, the Cleveland APL will waive adoption fees for all adult animals, while adoption fees will be reduced to $50 for kittens. Puppies will not be included in this special. Looking for an even better deal? Every Wednesday from now until Sept. 4, adoption fees for all adult animals will be just $10. Adoption fees for kittens will be reduced to $50 during these dates as well. Puppies, again, will not be included in this special.

  • Cleveland APL’s longest resident finally has a ‘loving’ home after 10 months at shelter

Cleveland APL’s longest resident finally has a ‘loving’ home after 10 months at shelter

    *Titan finally gets adopted*

CLEVELAND (WJW) – The Cleveland Animal Protective League‘s longest most current resident, finally has a forever home after spending more than 10 months at the shelter.

“Congratulations! The APL posted to their social media page, writing that Titan has found found a “loving home.” “Titan. as you can see, he couldn’t be happier for his photo!” they added.

*Titan after the news he’s been adopted*

According to the Cleveland APL website, Titan is an 8-year-old American Pit Bull mix. A description says Titan is “a bulky 70 pounds of pure affection and cuddles.”

He has been at the shelter since April 7, 2023.

The nonprofit had shared a video featuring Titan on its Facebook page, saying he has been passed up far too long and urgently needs to find someone to adopt him.

“He’s a goofy, fun-loving, and all-around good boy who hasn’t let being in the shelter this amount of time dull his sparkle,” the Facebook post read. “Please help him find the caring home and family he so much deserves.”

The video says Titan has been to foster homes and “they always tell me I’m a good boy. They even let me share the bed. Somehow still, no one has picked me.”

Titan’s description on the website also says that he’s an energetic dog, meaning he needs someone willing to take him on multiple walks a day.
