In the three-decade history of the Mosconi Cup, there is arguably no one who has got under the skin of their opponents quite like Earl Strickland.

The American pool icon’s confrontations with opposing players and referees, and outbursts at the crowd, made him something of a pantomime villain for Team Europe supporters too. So, it would perhaps be wise not to try to provoke the master of the mind games.

That is, of course, unless you happen to be Jayson Shaw. Because, last year, the Scottish cueist showed no compunction about mimicking Strickland in putting his ear to the crowd when he beat the three-time nine-ball world champion on enemy turf in Las Vegas last year.

This year’s playing vice-captain for Europe embraces that side of the annual clash with the best nine-ball players the USA has to offer and is going to be doing his best to get the home fans creating a raucous atmosphere at Alexandra Palace.

“Vegas last year was a little bit rowdy with their fans and I think their fans have started picking up that they need to be more like the European fans,” Shaw told Sky Sports News ahead of the 2023 Mosconi Cup, which starts on Wednesday, December 6 live on Sky Sports.

“This year, I’m going to make sure the fans are really on it. I get a lot of stick, but I give a lot too.

“You’ve got to take the good with the bad and there’s always a lot of rivalry in the team, but now you’ve got a little bit more.”

Strickland will not be adding to his 15 appearances for Team USA at this year’s tournament, but Shaw already has his eye on winding up another member of the opposition in former Team Europe player Fedor Gorst.

The Russia-born 2019 world nine-ball champion represented Europe in the Covid-affected 2020 tournament behind closed doors in Coventry as the hosts triumphed 11-3. However, gaining permanent residency in the USA means Gorst has been able to switch allegiance.

That means the player who was at one point ranked No 2 in Europe’s Race to the Mosconi Cup standings will be lining up for Jeremy Jones’ team as they seek to regain the trophy they last held in 2019, and Shaw has already been engaging in some good-natured ribbing of Gorst.

“Terrible,” Shaw said jokingly of his reaction to Gorst switching sides, adding: “Obviously, it’s his decision, right?

“It’s up to him to do what he wants to do, but I don’t think I could ever do that, and I think there are a few other players who couldn’t do that.

“He’s going to pay the price for doing that and he’s going to get a lot of heat for that this week. I’ve already been giving him a lot of stick for that, but he takes it well and he’s a good person.

“He’s a great player and I’m sure he’s going to play well, but I’m going to try to make him play not so well.”

As for his form on the table, Shaw heads into the Mosconi Cup ranked fifth in the World Nineball Tour rankings and having claimed his first title on the tour with a thrilling 13-12 win over Europe team-mate Albin Ouschan in October’s Hanoi Open final.

It could hardly have been better preparation for the upcoming clash with the Americans either, with the two-time Mosconi Cup Most Valuable Player feeling the tournament in the Vietnamese capital city was as close as a singles tournament gets to those matches.

“When I saw the venue and the crowd it reminded me of the Mosconi Cup and when I went out there it felt like I was playing Mosconi Cup matches,” Shaw said. “It was great preparation for this week.

“At the start of the year, a lot of things weren’t really going for me, but I’ve just tried to stay positive, keep working on my game, working on myself, and I feel like I’m in a good position now.

“I’m playing well, I feel good in myself and I’m looking forward to it.”

Shaw has been playing a big part in Europe’s preparations for their defence of the Mosconi Cup too, setting up a pre-tournament camp at his sister’s pool hall in Scotland where they got plenty of match practice as well as some team bonding in.

That included playing a challenge match against a team of five local nine-ball players mimicking the Mosconi Cup format, in which Europe triumphed 11-4, and the 33-year-old could hardly be happier with how Ralph Eckert’s squad are shaping up ahead of the event.

“I really feel our team have that good bond,” Shaw said. “We don’t have to really take in a rookie and try to help them out, everybody has been there.

“We’ve all won big tournaments all year and been in that position of playing in big finals. I feel like we’re really there and ready to play.”

Meanwhile, the week-long Squares in the City, focused on Clive and Memorial squares, is in full swing and the Napier Night Fiesta series starts its 2023-2024 season on December 8.

Eleanor Cardwell is convinced England’s ‘scary raw talent’ will be an exciting prospect when they face South Africa on Tuesday.

The Vitality Roses welcome South Africa in their first home series since winning a Netball World Cup silver medal with the three-match tournament starting in Manchester before heading to Nottingham for back-to-back weekend games.

Captain Natalie Metcalf and goal shooter Helen Housby announced in November they will be taking extended breaks from netball.

“I think these young guns have got something to prove,” said Cardwell.

“I’ve been impressed with them for years. I’ve been watching the Super League and I’ve played with Berri [Neil] with Manchester Thunder. I’ve been raving about them.

“They’ve all got such raw talent and to be put into this competitive environment they’re having to develop their game in that situation as well.

“It’s very exciting for the country and for netball. The more experience they get on the international stage then the more confident they’re going to feel in that space as well, so that’s going to make them grow and it’s quite scary actually.”

Cardwell was part of the Vitality Roses that finished runners-up at the Netball World Cup in South Africa earlier this year

England were beaten 59-52 by New Zealand in a series decider as the Silver Ferns retained the Taini Jamison Trophy in Hamilton in September.

However, the squad remains excited about facing South Africa and are heading into the clash with a blended team.

“We’ve got people who were involved in the World Cup, reserves, girls who have just come off the Test series in New Zealand,” said team-mate Fran Williams.

“There’s such a range of experience and also match readiness within the squad. We’re raring to go and it’s a new style of play.

“South Africa are always a challenge and I think if you look at the history of English and South African battles in netball, it’s very competitive. We’ve even had some draws against them in the past so they’re always up for the challenge and so will we be.”

Cardwell added: “We’ve built in some experience with some inexperience which is amazing because it’s like we’ve got fight and passion. We’ve got a mixture of everything.

“So, if you can get that balance right I think we’ll attack South Africa in an aggressive way and put it to them. The camp is full of excitement.”

The Vitality Roses did not come up against South Africa in the World Cup but Cardwell remains aware of the threat they pose and the squad will be using video analysis to plot out their tactics.

“They’re also full of experience and inexperience. They’ve got a lot of talent that they’ve had there for years but also a lot of talent that is new and I’ve not played against them before,” Cardwell said.

“They have now got a lot more players over in the Super League so that’s great for them and for international netball.

“It’s going to be a lot of video analysis and looking at what they can do and what their strengths and weaknesses are and how we can combat them. It’s going to be a challenge especially because they can throw anyone on.”

Cardwell added: “It’s going to be exciting to watch because there’s a lot to show on both sides and it’s not just going to be one-sided. Both teams will be battling it out and see where they are at that moment in time.”

Reflecting on the success of World Cup, Cardwell said it was a proud moment when she realised how much outreach and interaction there was.

“I was loving the amount of people jumping on to netball. It reached a lot more people and showed just how proud everyone was of us, especially after the previous year, I don’t think people were expecting us to get on to the podium,” Cardwell reflected.

“We got a lot of messages saying the hard work was worth it and a lot of fans were getting on board too. We were disappointed not winning the gold but getting a silver medal around the neck was very rewarding. It was a proud moment.”

Despite all the success Cardwell has accumulated since making her debut in a Home Nations clash against Northern Ireland in 2016, the mornings are still often filled with nerves.

“I definitely get nervous, it tends to be in the morning when I wake up. When we’re together in the changing room there’s a little bit of anticipation,” she said.

“The opposition doesn’t matter, we’ve got each other so the nerves settle and as soon as the whistle goes, you’re doing your job and playing a sport that you love. So, it’s no different to every other day in your life and I think the nerves just go.”

Los Angeles police searching for assailant in three fatal shootings of homeless people

Los Angeles police have launched a search for a killer suspected of fatally shooting three homeless people in separate incidents around the city, police officials announced Friday.

All three killings occurred in the early morning hours over a three-day span in November, Police Chief Michel Moore said at an afternoon news conference at police headquarters downtown, where he was joined by Dist. Atty. George Gascón and Mayor Karen Bass.

“This is a killer preying on the unhoused,” Bass said.

The first victim was shot about 3:10 am. on Nov. 26 in an alley near the intersection of 110th Street and Vermont Avenue in South L.A., police said. The man, identified by police as Jose Bolanos, 37, was found dead with a gunshot wound.

The following day, Mark Diggs, 62, was shot and killed about 4:45 a.m. in the 600 block of Mateo Street. Moore said Diggs was pushing a shopping cart and had stopped to plug in his phone and was about to go to sleep when the assailant approached him and shot him.

The third shooting occurred on Nov. 29 about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Avenue 18 and Pasadena Avenue in the Lincoln Heights area, where the body of a 52-year-old adult Latino man was discovered.

Los Angeles police are seeking help to find a suspect and a vehicle possibly involved in the death of three people.

Police did not identify the victim pending notification of his family.

Moore said in all three instances the victims were alone and out in the open.

“Each one was shot and killed as they slept” or were preparing to turn in for the night, Moore said.

Moore said the department has set up a task force of investigators that is working 24/7 to apprehend the killer.

Bass urged the city’s homeless residents not to sleep alone and to seek available services. She said homeless outreach workers have been informing those living on the street about the killings and the search for the killer.

“To the person responsible for this, I say this: We will find you, we will catch you and you will be held accountable.”

“An assault on one of us is an assault on all of us,” Gascón said.

Opinion: Who gets to live in L.A? A bold plan to create affordable housing has a serious flaw

Last December, Mayor Karen Bass moved to speed up the production of affordable housing in Los Angeles by issuing Executive Directive 1. This measure streamlines the approval of new multi-unit residences by exempting them from the usual slate of hearings, appeals and environmental reviews. The city Planning Commission voted this month to continue ED1, bringing the directive one step closer to becoming permanent.

On its face, this is the sort of bold housing policy Los Angeles needs. The city is not building nearly enough units to meet demand. In fact, an LAist analysis found that from 2010 to 2019, the city lost eight times more homes that were affordable for low-income residents than it gained.

This has partly been due to developers being deterred by lengthy, expensive and risky approval processes for new construction. On its face, ED1 is helping to chip away at that problem: The Department of City Planning reported that, as of the end of October, it had approved more than 50 new developments under the directive and had 55 other applications pending, projecting the addition of 12,383 new affordable homes.

But absent from this success story is the way this directive is reshaping the character and makeup of Los Angeles’ working-class neighborhoods and displacing longtime residents. In her effort to permanently streamline the construction of affordable housing, Mayor Bass is asking the city to weigh in on a bigger question: Who gets to live in Los Angeles?

According to our analysis of city data, in ED1’s first 10 months, more than a third of new developments filed under the directive have been in South Los Angeles, an area with one of the highest concentrations of Angelenos living in poverty. We also found that one-third of those South L.A. developments require the demolition of existing affordable housing, eliminating at least 62 rent-stabilized units in the area and displacing hundreds of residents, many of whom cannot afford to move elsewhere in their neighborhood or the city. Under the streamlined process, tenants have mere months to find new homes. We’ve talked to many such residents who fear they will become homeless.

It’s also worth noting where ED1 developments aren’t happening. In June 2023, Mayor Bass revised the directive to exclude parcels zoned for single-family homes — which initially made up more than half of approved projects, according to an analysis by Abundant Housing.

This change came after the city planning department heard “feedback” from residents it surveyed as well as members of the City Council concerned about apartment buildings “plunked down in the middle of single family neighborhoods.” This exemption prevents the city from streamlining the construction of affordable housing in these “higher-resource areas” with the least density. It also makes multifamily residential zones more of a target for developers.

If L.A.’s wealthy neighborhoods are preserved at the expense of low-income ones, we will all feel the consequences: rising rents as the number of rent-stabilized units continues to shrink; an increase in homelessness, especially for seniors and renters on fixed incomes who have no other housing options available; less diversity in Los Angeles as residents in the affected neighborhoods, which are predominantly Black and brown, scatter outside the city to afford rent; and more traffic as families have to relocate farther from their schools and jobs.

Los Angeles urgently needs more affordable housing, and streamlining the development process is a necessary step. But city leaders need to be mindful of what may be destroyed if the approach is not equitable. Before making ED1 permanent, the city should exempt rent-stabilized units from the streamlining process so that a more thorough assessment can take place and tenants have more time to consider their options. The city should further ensure that developers — even those pursuing 100% affordable housing projects, some of which may technically be exempt — comply with the obligations for relocation, right of return and right to remain under California’s Housing Crisis Act of 2019.

Displaced tenants also should receive more robust relocation services, including help securing comparable replacement housing in the same area. Under the current process, the city provides a list of potential housing providers and tenants are burdened with the search for affordable units.

Finally, single-family homes should not be exempt from streamlining. Such an exemption reflects the sort of NIMBY position that got us into this affordable housing crisis in the first place. It will only reinforce the inequity that has shaped housing policy in Los Angeles as affluent neighborhoods remain relatively sheltered from change while low-income neighborhoods are dismantled for the sake of growth.

Los Angeles’ leaders must consider the unintended consequences ED1 could have. Our city has to balance the need to build affordable housing with the need to keep our most vulnerable residents and communities housed and intact. Not doing so risks undermining the efficacy of this directive, which aims to ensure more Angelenos have access to affordable housing, not fewer.

In the South Bay, e-bikes are restricted along the beach. Yet they’re still everywhere

Glenn Kumro was sitting astride his bike on the Strand in Hermosa Beach after stopping to talk to some friends when something slammed into him from behind.

He tumbled over his handlebars, breaking his shoulder, fracturing his hip and losing two teeth.

A speeding e-biker had hit him, Kumro said recently. The e-biker apologized and admitted to being distracted before riding off.

“Just imagine if it was a kid who got hit,” said Kumro, a 58-year-old disabled veteran, who lived in Hermosa Beach at the time of the accident two years ago and has since moved to Northern California. “Those bikes go way too fast.”

A careless rider on a regular bike could also cause trouble on the beachfront sidewalk that on some stretches is teeming with cyclists and pedestrians as well as skateboarders, rollerbladers and dog walkers.

But e-bikes can go up to 28 mph — well above the Strand’s 8 mph speed limit — and are usually heavier and bulkier than regular bikes. They have become increasingly popular in recent years, and some coastal cities have restricted their use.

On the Strand, Hermosa Beach prohibits the use of electric power while permitting e-bikes as long as they’re pedaled manually. Since September, Manhattan Beach has completely banned e-bikes on the Strand, allowing them on city streets and the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which also hugs the coastline.

Redondo Beach, which has a beachfront path separate from the Strand, doesn’t have its own e-bike regulations, but e-bikers must abide by state laws requiring them to follow the same rules as regular cyclists.

E-bikers and e-bike shop owners say the bikes are safe when ridden responsibly. But the number of unsafe riders in the South Bay has left city officials and police grappling with how to keep everyone safe. In Orange County, an abundance of e-bikes on the boardwalk has resulted in collisions with pedestrians and dogs and prompted residents to call for stricter regulations.

Some South Bay residents say the rules aren’t enforced and the bikes are disruptive. They say they often see e-bikers weaving around other cyclists and exceeding the speed limit.

Police officials say e-bike laws are hard to enforce on the Strand, where motorcycles and radar guns aren’t practical. There also aren’t enough officers to routinely station someone there.

“Without a heavy police presence, people are going to do what they want to do,” said Erik Mar, 70, a Manhattan Beach resident who cycles along the coast every day. “It’s kind of lawless.”

Redondo Beach resident Carlos Hernandez, 48, rides his electric bike along the coast nearly every weekend. He starts in the Hollywood Riviera in Redondo Beach and heads north to Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach.

“I use electricity when I need to,” he said — even when he’s on the Strand, where electric power is prohibited. It’s not an issue as long as he’s not riding recklessly, he said.

Hernandez’s friends Sam Valencia and Michael Pacheco, who also live in Redondo Beach, often join him for rides by the beach. Valencia, 48, has a regular bike and is considering buying an e-bike for his 12-mile round-trip commute to El Segundo, where he works for toy company Mattel.

“They go too fast,” he said of e-bikes on the Strand. “They just need to follow the flow down here. It’s not a race. … If you want to ride fast, get on the road.”

Pacheco, 50, rides an e-bike and says it’s not a big deal to occasionally use electric power on the Strand. He’s seen e-bikes explode in popularity, he said, and knows they can be dangerous when not handled carefully.

All three friends said the reckless riders they see are usually teenagers who speed, race each other and disregard road signs.

Recently, Redondo Beach City Councilman Zein Obagi was walking with his fiancée on his city’s beachfront bike path when a young person on an e-bike sped past them, weaving around pedestrians and other cyclists.

“If he hits somebody, that’s going to be a very tragic accident,” Obagi said. “It is a serious concern of the residents here, and people want something done about it.”

Obagi said the number of e-bikes in the South Bay has “blown up” over the last year. He described their increasing popularity as a double-edged sword.

“It’s a dream to have environmentally friendly micro-transit,” he said, “but it’s a nightmare to have a kid driving 25 miles per hour on an electric bike.”

Obagi said he and his fellow council members support stricter statewide regulations on e-bikes but don’t plan to implement municipal rules in Redondo Beach. The city doesn’t have the resources to set up its own licensing program, he said, and a speed limit would be difficult to enforce. He referenced a speed limit recently implemented in Manhattan Beach, which has not yet resulted in any citations.

He doesn’t blame police for a lack of enforcement — they need to work with parents and schools to make e-bikes as safe as possible, he said.

Hermosa Beach Mayor Justin Massey raised the issue of e-bikes at a City Council meeting Oct. 10, asking Police Chief Paul LeBaron about enforcement.

“We’ve dedicated so much of our time, attention and resources to the Strand in particular,” LeBaron responded. “We know that there’s threats to public safety down there … it’s the one place in the city that actually brings pedestrians and vehicles together, ” he said, referring to e-bikes, regular bikes and skateboards.

In addition to the difficulties of patrolling a narrow, crowded path, it can be hard to tell if e-bikers are using their motors or just pedaling, LeBaron said in an interview.

And pursuing a speeding biker can be dangerous.

“In order for officers to catch that person, they essentially have to break the same rules they’re trying to enforce, endangering everyone on the Strand,” LeBaron said.

Still, there have been no reported collisions on the Strand this year or last, which LeBaron attributed to effective policing.

“We’d be talking about tragedies right now if we weren’t doing what we could,” he said.

In early September, the Manhattan Beach City Council adopted e-bike regulations, including a ban on riding on the Strand, a 15-mph speed limit on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail and prohibitions on racing, stunts and riding on sidewalks.

“While e-bikes have become popular and are a great way to reduce our reliance on cars, pollution, and traffic, they aren’t toys and can be dangerous when not operated properly,” Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery said in a statement.

The new ordinance has not led to any citations on the Strand or the Marvin Braude trail so far this year, according to the city clerk’s office.

In February, state Assemblymember Tasha Boerner Horvath (D-Encinitas) introduced a bill that would eventually create a licensing program with a written test for riders without a driver’s license, as well as state-mandated e-bike training. It would also prohibit children under 12 from riding e-bikes.

The Redondo Beach City Council is drafting a letter in support of the bill, Obagi said.

More statewide e-bike laws are desperately needed, said Redondo Beach Police Chief Joe Hoffman.

“Unfortunately, the technology for e-bikes has outpaced the legislation in the state of California,” he said. “It has put police departments at a disadvantage.”

World champion Michael Smith crashed out of the Players Championship in the first round after suffering a shock defeat to Richard Veenstra, while Michael van Gerwen kicked off his title defence with victory over Callan Rydz.

Smith, who missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish in the fourth leg, averaged just 85.35 and had a highest checkout of 36 in a worryingly off-colour performance just weeks ahead of the defence of his world title.

World No 83 Veenstra missed five match darts before eventually taking out double 20 to seal a fully-deserved 6-3 victory in Minehead.

Grand Slam of Darts winner Luke Humphries avoided another upset as he recovered from 4-2 down to beat Martin Lukeman 6-4, while Gerwyn Price thrashed Ricky Evans 6-0 and Michael Van Gerwen beat Callan Rydz 6-3.

Reigning champion Van Gerwen avoided a similar fate, averaging 97 to open his bid for a record-extending eighth Players Championship Finals title with a 6-3 win over an out-of-sorts Rydz.

LAPD investigates protest at Brentwood home of AIPAC president as possible hate crime

Los Angeles police have launched an investigation into a protest Thursday at the Brentwood home of the president of a pro-Israeli lobbying group, with footage on social media showing them igniting smoke devices in the street and spattering fake blood on the property.

The incident, which police are investigating as a possible hate crime, is the latest in Los Angeles after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, prompting Israel to bombard and invade Gaza, the Palestinian enclave that Hamas controls.

The crisis has roiled Los Angeles, home to large populations of both Jews and Palestinians. On Nov. 1, Canter’s Deli, an iconic Jewish restaurant in the Fairfax District, was defaced with antisemitic messages spray-painted below a mural depicting the history of Jews in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded Thursday morning to the 11900 block of Foxboro Drive, where a group of protesters were causing a “disturbance,” according to a statement posted on X. Police made no arrests at the scene, but were investigating the incident as suspected vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon and a hate crime.

The statement did not name the owner of the home that was targeted. Officer Melissa Ohana, an LAPD spokeswoman, said the department doesn’t identify victims of crimes.

But in a post on X, Mayor Karen Bass appeared to identify the victim as Michael Tuchin, a Los Angeles attorney and president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC.

“I’ve spoken with Michael Tuchin and Chief [Michel] Moore about yesterday’s disturbing incident,” Bass wrote. “Hate and violence will not be tolerated in our City. LAPD will continue to work with city and business leaders to keep Angelenos safe.”

Bass later removed Tuchin’s name from the post, saying it was “for the safety of those involved.”

Tuchin didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

A video posted by the People’s City Council – Los Angeles showed a group of people standing outside a home that the organization identified as Tuchin’s, holding a banner that read, “F— your holiday baby killer.” A red liquid had been poured on the driveway. Small white bundles were scattered on the driveway and front lawn.

Footage posted by Sam Yebri, a former City Council candidate, showed smoke billowing in the street as people yelled and a siren droned.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said a person contacted the department at 10:37 a.m. about an unspecified incident in the 11900 block of Foxboro Drive. During the call, it was determined that the police and not the Fire Department should respond, Humphrey said. No fire units were dispatched to the scene.

Man accused of killing the brother of ex-Laker Michael Cooper is charged in two more violent crimes

The man suspected of gunning down the brother of former Lakers star Michael Cooper at a park in Pasadena on Saturday also has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm in two other recent incidents in the city, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said Wednesday.

Aaron Miguel Conell, 24, was charged Monday in the fatal shooting of Mickey Cooper, 64, at Washington Park, the same site where he allegedly shot another man in the neck. Authorities have charged Conell with one count of attempted murder in the earlier incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Oct. 29. Officers responded to gunshots and found a man with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Seven days later, around 9:30 p.m., Conell is accused of walking up to a car at a Pasadena gas station and pointing a gun at a man in the driver’s seat. He is charged with one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm in that incident.

Conell was arrested Saturday, the same day he’s accused of killing Cooper at the park that is “10 houses away” from where Michael Cooper, 67, said he and his younger brother grew up.

“The reason my brother was there is that it was a safe haven for him, a place where he felt comfortable and safe,” Michael Cooper said. “And it had been until that tragic night.”

Conell faces 50 years to life in state prison if convicted on each count of murder, attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. His bail has been set at $4.25 million.

Pasadena Police Department detectives said at a news conference Wednesday that Conell also is a suspect in two additional shootings.

Police said that none of the incidents are connected and that Conell — who has never been convicted of a felony and no gang affiliation — seemed to commit the alleged violent acts without a motive.

“Aaron Conell is diabolically evil, that’s the only motive we’ve come up with so far,” said Pasadena police Lt. Keith Gomez, who’s in charge of the robbery-homicide unit.

Michael Cooper expressed his appreciation to the Pasadena Police Department for the swift identification and arrest of Conell. He said he’d been part of the Pasadena community his entire life.

“This was the park where my brother and I would play basketball in the late ’60s and through the ’70s and ’80s,” said Cooper, who won five NBA championships during his 12-year career with the Lakers that ended in 1990.

He said Mickey was a gentle, loving person who was addicted to drugs. Mickey would sleep at Washington Park because it was so familiar to him.

Cooper said his brother was welcome to stay with him or at their grandmother’s home but that he often preferred the park.

“We are going to miss Mickey, but I like to feel he’s in a better place,” Cooper said. “My brother had an addiction he just couldn’t shake. Over the last year, we tried to get him a lot of help. He may have appeared homeless, but he wasn’t. He had a home up in Altadena at my grandmother’s house.

“I tried to bring my brother to my house several times. But that’s still not a reason for him not to go to that park, go to sleep and wake up and find himself in this situation.”

Michael and Mickey were raised in Pasadena primarily by their grandmother, Ardessie Butler, after their parents, Marshall and Jean, divorced when the boys were young. Jean, who had 10 siblings, worked as a registered nurse, and the boys grew up in a hectic household.

They attended Pasadena High School and Michael was drafted by the Lakers out of the University of New Mexico. He was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1986-87 and later became an assistant coach with the Lakers, the head coach of the WNBA Sparks, the head coach of the USC women’s basketball team and head coach of the Culver City High boys’ basketball team.

“I want to express deep condolences to the family of the individual who died and unwavering support for the wounded victim,” L.A. County Dist. Atty. George Gascón said. “These violent senseless acts have no place in our communities, especially at a public park where families could be present.

“We continue in our commitment to combating gun violence and will vigorously pursue justice for the victims and their families, while ensuring the safety and security of all of our residents.”

Gomez said that a 9-millimeter semiautomatic firearm was recovered from Conell’s vehicle, and that evidence indicated it was the gun used in both Washington Park shootings. City officials said the park is relatively safe during daylight hours but that it has become increasingly dangerous at night.

Justin Jones, the Pasadena City Council member who represents the Washington Park area, said he grew up a block from the park and that “recently residents have expressed concern about activities occurring in the park.”

City and law enforcement officials have scheduled a town hall meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to discuss ways to improve safety at the park. Michael Cooper said that, as a native of the city, he deeply appreciated the efforts of law enforcement and that Mickey’s being killed for seemingly no reason was difficult to process.

“I remember back in the ’80s when we won, we had a championship parade here,” Cooper said. “And today I stand here [grieving]. … Mickey didn’t bother anybody. He loved everybody.”
