    June 16, 2024 – CLEVELAND, Ohio – The City of Cleveland Department of Public Works has extended the hours of several recreation centers to serve as cooling centers for Cleveland residents that are seeking shelter over the next week of 90 degree plus temperatures, city officials and Mayor Justin M. Bibb announced in a press release Sunday.

    Cooling center operational hours will be from 11:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. Normally scheduled recreation programming will continue, and each site will have areas in the facility where people can relax and cool off.

    Dates of service are:

    Monday-Wednesday, June 17-19, 2024

    (outdoor pools will be OPEN on Juneteenth during

    regularly

    scheduled hours)

    Thursday and Friday, June 20=21, 2024 11:30 am=10pm

    The sites include:

     

    Zelma George Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 3155 Martin L. King Blvd.

    Collinwood Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 16300 Lakeshore Blvd.

    Gunning Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 16700 Puritas Ave.

    Kovacic Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 6250 St. Clair Ave.

    Michael Zone Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 6301 Lorain Ave.

    Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center: 15401 Miles Ave.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    All playground programs are suspended Monday through Friday this week including the playground meal program. Playground staff will be assigned to recreation centers.

    All recreation centers will serve lunch meals to youth 18 and under from noon to 1 p.m. daily.

    On Juneteenth (Wednesday, June 19, 2024) only the six sites serving as cooling centers will serve meals (see list above).

    City Spray Park and Spray Basins will be open Monday through Friday this week.

    CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Fox 8 I-Team has uncovered extra benefits for Cleveland city workers driving take-home cars. This comes on top of tax money paying for gas and maintenance.

    We took a closer look at the deal for Cleveland City employees driving “commuter” or take-home cars.

    Tax dollars pay for the gas. Tax dollars pay for maintenance. Now we’ve found, for years, the use of a take-home car hasn’t cost the workers anything.

    The Mayor’s Office tells us that the City of Cleveland has not been charging workers a commuting fee, a weekly fee outlined in an ordinance passed in 1990.

    And, the city has not been taking out taxes for using the cars, yet there’s a reference to that on approval forms.

    City of Cleveland take-home cars have been in the spotlight in recent months following I-Team investigations.

    We exposed a Hopkins Airport official driving a take-home car while living about 70 miles away and revealed a safety official crashing while driving with kids in a city car against policy.

    The I-Team also discovered that the former Safety Director had driven with a child in a city car. Now, we’ve found that the people at City Hall have not been enforcing the policies for making workers pay something for their use of take-home cars.

    The city said no taxes have been taken out, and no commuter fees have been collected since 2019.

    The city has not explained why it had not been collecting fees from employees or taking out taxes for take-home cars. But, the Mayor’s Office tells us that will start again this year.

    City Councilman Michael Polensek said, “You just have to enforce the protocol and the provision. Enforce it. It is a benefit to the City to have people to be able to respond in that vehicle, but it’s also a big plus for the employee who gets that vehicle. So, I see nothing wrong with that charge. And, enforce it.”

    Here is the Cleveland city ordinance referring to a ‘commuting fee” for take-home cars:

    “Each officer and employee authorized to drive a City vehicle to and from work shall be charged a commuting fee in an amount to be determined by the Director of Finance but not to exceed twenty-five dollars ($25.00) per week. The Commissioner of Accounts is hereby authorized to deduct such charge from the salary or wages due such officers and employees who have filed a written authorization of such deductions.” 

    While the city plans to resume collecting fees and making deductions for taxes, the Mayor’s Office announced in April that officials also are doing an overall review of take-home cars.

    CLEVELAND, Ohio- The City of Cleveland has unveiled its new Open Data Portal website, a one-stop shop for city data sets, dashboards, civic tech applications and more.

    The Cleveland Open Data Portal accessible at data.clevelandohio.gov is part of Mayor Justin Bibb administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and innovation, the young, Black mayor said in a press release.

    The website provides for access to city departments, council members information, job openings , city services and other data.

    “This initiative is a milestone for the city that’s aimed at building trust, fostering collaboration, and empowering the public with  instant access to a wide range of datasets related to city operations,” said Mayor Bibb, 37 and the city’s fourth Black mayor “Through the portal, users can explore, analyze and interact with city data in a variety of useful ways.”

    “The Cleveland Open Data Portal represents a significant step forward in Mayor Bibb’s work and commitment to a modern, open and responsive city government,” said Dr. Elizabeth Crowe, director of the mayor’s Office of Urban Analytics and Innovation. “The overarching goal is to empower Clevelanders to actively participate in shaping the future of our city.”

    Key features of the Cleveland Open Data Portal include:

    1. Data Accessibility: Users will have access to a diverse range of datasets covering various aspects of city operations, including  public safety, transportation, housing, and more. This data will empower residents to make informed decisions, drive civic engagement, and contribute to the betterment of their neighborhoods.
