  • Tonight on ‘Abbott Elementary,’ Schwarber’s 4-home run game is enshrined in show’s ‘cinematic universe’

    The stars aligned in August when the cast of “Abbott Elementary” went to Citizens Bank Park to film scenes for the show during a Phillies game. Kyle Schwarber blasted four home runs that night – becoming just the 21st player to do so in MLB history – on the way to a 19-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.

    Fans of the Emmy-winning ABC sitcom, now in its fifth season, can see how Quinta Brunson and company incorporated the surreal experience into tonight’s episode, which airs at 8:30 p.m.

    The plan to film at Citizens Bank Park on Aug. 28 was set in motion by MLB Studios, which had reached out to Warner Brothers and the Phillies for permission to bring film crews to the ballpark. Schwarber had already been scheduled to make a cameo, but no one could have guessed that he was on the verge of a career night at the plate.

    “The baseball gods were smiling on us,” Nick Trotta, MLB’s vice president of global media programming and licensing, told MLB.com. “After the second homer, I joked with the writer, ‘This has to be part of the episode, because he’s gonna hit a third one.’ And then he hits a third one and a fourth one. So while the show is completely fictional, Kyle Schwarber’s historic four-homer game is now part of Abbott’s cinematic universe.”

    During the game, the main cast of “Abbott” was seated in Section 114 and shown on the Jumbotron. Signs posted outside that section notified fans that they might appear on camera during the filming.

    “During the game is where we caught some real extra bonus energy. Seeing our cast feed off what’s happening on the field, seeing Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs … oh my God, that was crazy,” Einhorn told MLB.com. “You can’t script that type of energy, and it really came across on the screen.”

    The premise of Wednesday’s episode is that the Abbott Elementary staff go to the Phillies game for Teacher Appreciation Night. The episode will include in-game footage of Schwarber’s home runs and Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker pumping up the crowd.

    Einhorn recalled encouraging Schwarber to be himself on camera and not worry about acting. He said the show was striving to capture an authentic ballpark experience that differs from many other film projects set at professional sporting events but often shot at alternate athletic facilities.

    When the game ended, the “Abbott” cast took the field to film an apparent scene with Schwarber and get some photos with the Phillie Phanatic.

    Brunson, the star and showrunner, gushed about the experience in an Instagram post after the game and called it “one of our most incredible shoots.”

    The Phillies season came to a disappointing end last week with an extra-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLDS. But for Phillies fans and Schwarber, who’s entering free agency this offseason, tonight’s episode of “Abbott” will always be a testament to the energy at Citizens Bank Park.

    “Quinta and the team definitely brought me some luck that night,” Schwarber told MLB.com.

  • Hundreds of people will sleep at the Phillies ballpark on Nov. 20. Here’s why.

    On a November night a few weeks after the baseball season ends, the outfield at Citizens Bank Park will be filled with people in sleeping bags.

    The Phillies are partnering with Covenant House, a nonprofit that provides services for young people experiencing homelessness, for a “sleep out” fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 20, when participants will stay at the ballpark from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

    “It’s not a slumber party. It’s not a camping trip. It’s not pretending to be homeless,” said Colleen Veldt, Covenant House’s vice president of peer-to-peer fundraising. “It’s really a very strong act of solidarity to call attention to this issue and to raise money.”

    Covenant House operates in 19 states and five countries providing shelter, housing support and other resources to people ages 16-21 who are on the street or have been victims of human trafficking. The organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Pennsylvania and wanted to revisit a yearslong partnership with the Phillies, who once had former managers Charlie Manuel and Larry Bowa spend a night on the street in Center City to raise money for the nonprofit.

    Covenant House, based in New York City, once had a sleep out at Yankee Stadium with about 250 people on the field overnight. The organization hopes to bring about 750 people to Citizens Bank Park this year, making it the largest sleep out event to date. Covenant House also will host events nationwide the same night, including smaller sleep outs at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

    “The premise of the event is that you’re giving up your bed for one night so that a young person facing homelessness can have a safe bed at Covenant House,” Veldt said.

    Covenant House estimates more than 4.2 million young people experience homelessness in the United States each year, including more than 10,000 children and youth in Philadelphia and over 46,000 statewide. Many young adults lose their safety nets when they age out of the foster care system. Others struggle with mental health and legal issues. Some lack basic documents needed to access housing and other necessities.

    “It’s a less visible population than the adults who are facing homelessness, and that’s really part of the issue,” Veldt said. “Young people are really good at flying under the radar. They have really been let down by the adults and institutions in their lives, so they’re hesitant and afraid to come forward to ask for help. They couch surf and try to make it on their own as long as they can.”

    People who want to participate in the sleep out at Citizens Bank Park must be at least 13 years old and will need to raise a minimum of $1,000 using Covenant House’s fundraising portal. Those who sign up for the event can customize their pages and share links on social media, in group texts and by email to raise money.

    “Our team gives weekly coaching tips to try to make it as easy as possible for them,” Veldt said.

    On the night of the sleep out, Covenant House will provide participants with a sleeping bag, a cardboard box and light refreshments. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event will go on rain or shine. Based on the weather or the amount of space occupied in the outfield, some people will sleep in covered areas of the ballpark concourse. There will be access to bathrooms and Covenant House staff will be available to offer emotional support.

    “It’s meant to be uncomfortable. It’s a challenge,” Veldt said. “It’s not homelessness by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not usually a comfortable night.”

    The morning after the sleep out, Covenant House leaders and alumni who once stayed at the organization’s shelters will hold a reflection period for people to talk about their experiences. Holding the sleep out on Thursday is an intentional way to help people understand the difficulty of going to work or school after a night without their usual comforts. 

    “You get a full, immersive experience in our work, our mission and our world when you come to our events,” Veldt said.

    Covenant House has a 24/7 youth crisis center and shelter in Germantown that serves about 300 people every year. The nonprofit also has additional beds at other locations in the city, a mobile outreach unit and a transitional housing facility serving youth in York.

    Veldt said the Covenant House’s goal is to bring in more than $1.5 million from the sleep out event at Citizens Bank Park. All proceeds from the event will support young people in Pennsylvania, and those who wish to participate in the sleep out virtually from another location also are invited to sign up. 

    “We want people to know that this is a really pressing issue and that there is something they can do to help,” she said.

    Philadelphia Phillies’ superstar first baseman Bryce Harper is making headlines once again in the 2025 MLB season, demonstrating why he remains one of baseball’s most dominant forces.     PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Philadelphia Phillies are just one win away from clinching their first NL East title since 2011.

    Aaron Nola is expected to be on the mound Monday night to start the three-game homestand vs. the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.

    “Hopefully we get it done because that’ll be exciting,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Sunday night after the team’s 2-1 loss to the Mets.

    Seeking their third World Series championship, the Phillies overtook Atlanta for the division lead on May 3 and haven’t trailed since.

    Philadelphia (92-64) is on track for a first-round bye in the playoffs. It’s the third time the Phillies have reached the postseason three years in a row (1976-78 and 2007-11).

    “Not everybody gets the chance to play for the World Series every year, so as much as maybe people in this room feel like this is where we should be, it’s still an accomplishment,” All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm said Friday night when the team officially clinched a playoff spot.

    Philadelphia won five straight NL East titles from 2007-11, then went 10 years without making the playoffs. A wild-card entry each of the past two postseasons, the Phillies put together consecutive October runs that ended in heartbreak.

    They reached the 2022 World Series, losing to Houston in six games, and dropped a seven-game NL Championship Series to Arizona last year after leading the underdog Diamondbacks 2-0 and 3-2.

    Philadelphia’s only World Series championships came in 1980 and 2008.

    City approves Phillies’ plan to expand New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park

    As one of MLB’s top-ranked teams for attendance, the Phillies want to do something about the cramped space inside the New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park. The shop has been so busy in recent years that the Phillies opened up a tented area outside to handle crowds of customers. 

    This week, the team received approval from the Philadelphia Art Commission to move forward with a plan that will expand the size of the team store. The shop is at the corner of Pattison Avenue and Citizens Bank Way, next to the third base gate. Review and approval by the art commission is required for such renovations because the land is city-owned and leased to the team.

    The Phillies’ plan calls for adding more than 3,500 square feet of floor space to the shop. The expansion project will include creating another 3,500 square feet for storage space in the main concourse and on the suite level above the shop. The team hopes to complete the work during the nest two offseasons. 

    At a meeting with the art commission on Wednesday, team officials said the expansion will utilize part of an existing landscaped area in front of the store. The team also will convert unused space inside the ballpark to make the shop larger. Project renderings show the renovated space would match the current facade of the team store using a similar canopy roof design and pink masonry.

    The team store renovation would require the removal trees outside the stadium, but the Phillies plan to include other landscaping as part of the redesigned entrance area at the third base gate.

    Another rendering shows the Phillies’ proposed expansion of the New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park.

    During the team’s presentation to the art commission, the Phillies said they’ll need to remove six trees from the plaza outside the shop and replace them with new landscaping. Team officials said the goal is to make the store more visible by using low-lying plants. Members of the art commission approved the project on condition that the Phillies look for ways to plant more trees and create shaded areas around the shop. 

    The Phillies told the art commission their philosophy for the ballpark has changed since it opened in 2004. Although Citizens Bank Park was designed to help fans get off the street and into their seats as soon as possible, there has been a growing emphasis on finding ways to engage fans in areas surrounding the ballpark. 

    On the other side of the third base gate, the Phillies said they created the Pass & Stow pub and installed a wooden pergola with shaded seating to give fans places to relax. Team officials told the art commission they will explore ways they can tweak the design to address the comments they received, although such adjustments are not required. 

    The Phillies did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the team store expansion. 

    Planning documents submitted to the city list Ewing Cole as the project architect and Pennoni Associates as the civil engineer. 

    The New Era team store stocks a mix of jerseys, hats, Phillies-branded souvenirs and other fan apparel. Plans to expand the space come as Citizens Bank Park prepares to host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, which is expected to bring in fans from around the United States and will have its own line of merchandise.

    Recent upgrades at Citizens Bank Park include last year’s installation of the PhanaVision video board, which replaced a much smaller screen that had been there since the ballpark opened. Before the start of this season, the team also installed a new outfield scoreboard.

    The Phillies rank third in home attendance this year, averaging 41,398 people per game. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers (48,403) and New York Yankees (41,816) average more fans in their ballparks. 

    Earlier this year, the Phillies announced they are joining Comcast Spectacor in a long-term development plan to add amenities to the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia. The $2.5 billion master plan calls for new restaurants, stores, fan plazas, a concert venue, a hotel and future residential development.

    I still remember my first Phillies game like it was yesterday. It makes me happy to remember it that way — because that’s how my grand pop wanted it. From the first frame of his earliest recollections of visiting the ballpark when he was ten years old, grand pop always had that first view of the perfectly quaffed field of grass embedded in his memory forever. Even at age 90, he still talked about it and looked back with fondness recalling that warm summer day in 1938. Now his attention turned to providing me with that same experience.

    Fifty years later, when he led me into the stadium — we didn’t stop for drinks or to use the restroom. We went right up that narrow causeway which opened up to the inside of the stadium. He paused for a moment before we made our way to the seats — allowing me to take in the sun-soaked diamond, the reflection of the scoreboard, and the Philly Phanatic wreaking unbridled havoc on the away teams’ dugout.

    For young Philly sports fans, the time has never been better for a first time at the ballpark. First Energy Stadium — the home of the Reading Phillies — has a pool for the kids during the game. For young Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park— who attend games each season for the chance at being swept up and hugged by the Philly Phanatic — don’t even need a ticket if under the age of two. Attractions include The Yard a 13,000 foot interactive experience as well as rock climbing. Fans under 14 get a first Phillies Game Certificate.

    Young Sixers fans ages 4–14 who sign up for the Jr. Sixers Club get a welcome kit, as well as discounts to the Sixers store. Kids ages 5–12 can join the Eagles Kids Club — allowing them access both Eagles merchandise and content as well as invites to meet the players as well as special events. Currently, Campus Philly has discounted tickets for Philadelphia Union games as well as for the upcoming Flyers season for local college students.

    Perhaps the most important youth athletic event is happening this week in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. On Saturday, another generation of Phillies fans — Council Rock Newtown — staved off elimination by beating Salem New Hampshire 5–0. On Sunday — the kids from the Philly area won again — beating Puyallup Washington by a final score of 12–2.

    It’s strange — thinking back to my first Phillies game thirty-five years ago — I don’t even remember who won. All I remember is the excitement of that great view of Veterans Stadium.

    Just the way that Grandpop wanted it.

    The Philadelphia Phillies started the 2024 season at an incredible pace. It seemed like Rob Thomson’s team couldn’t lose.

    Phillies fans are wondering what happened to that team because lately, it seems like all Thomson’s team can do is lose.

    The Phillies had a 61-32 record through July 11, including two seven-game win streaks, one six-game win streak, and only seven series losses. They held the title of the best team in baseball for quite some time and had a large lead in the NL East. All was good in Philadelphia.

    Teams are Catching Up to the Phillies

    Then, just before the All-Star break, the Phillies lost a three-game series to the Oakland Athletics at Citizens Bank Park. Not only did they lose the series, but they lost it badly. The Phillies were outscored 29-16 in their home ballpark against one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball. Little did the team and the fans know what would come after that.

    The Phillies came out of the All-Star break playing sloppy baseball. They lost five straight series to start the second half of the season, including a six-game losing streak during that stretch. They were able to win the series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and the first game in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. It looked like the Phillies were getting back on track and playing winning baseball again. They fooled us.

    After taking the series opener against the Diamondbacks, the Phillies lost three straight games to lose yet another series. Two of those three games were complete blowouts. The Phillies were looking to start fresh against the last-place Miami Marlins back at home after a long 10-game road trip out west.

    Taijuan Walker took the mound in the series opener against the Marlins after returning from the IL. This was his first major league start since June 21. He let up two runs in the first inning and only made it through four innings, allowing three total runs. The Phillies’ offense couldn’t get anything going, and they lost their fourth straight game.

    The Importance of a First-Round Bye for the Phillies

    The Phillies have 42 more games left in the regular season. Their schedule is favorable from here on out. They have two big series against the Atlanta Braves and an important series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves are just six games back in the NL East and are creeping up on the struggling Phillies for the top spot.

    The Brewers are just two games back of the Phillies in the National League standings. The Phillies are 3-0 against the Brewers this season, with three games left to play. If they finish with identical records at the end of the season, the Phillies need to win at least one more game against them to guarantee potential home-field advantage and the better seed in the playoffs.

    As of today, the Dodgers hold the top spot in the NL. The Phillies are 5-1 against them, so the Phillies will have home-field advantage and the better seed if both teams finish with identical records. This is also true with the San Diego Padres, who are two games back of the Phillies in the NL.

    One team to worry about is the Diamondbacks. The Phillies are 3-4 against them this year and don’t have any more games against them. The Diamondbacks are two games back of the Phillies in the NL.

    The top two division winners at the end of the regular season get a first-round bye in the playoffs. If the season ended today, the Phillies would be the No. 2 seed and have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs unless they would end up facing the Dodgers in the NLCS.

    It’s also important to have the best record in the majors come playoff time. Home-field advantage in the World Series is determined by the team with the best regular season record. If both teams finished with identical records, the tiebreaker would go to the head-to-head record. The Phillies are the fifth-best team in the major leagues and are 1 ½ games back from having the best record as of today.

    The Phillies need to figure things out collectively as a team and get back to playing winning baseball. This slump has lasted too long.

    They’ll look to build on their 9-5 victory over the Marlins last night.

    It’s important to have a home-field advantage in the playoffs, especially with the atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park.

    One year ago today the city of Philadelphia embraced their struggling superstar.

    After a horrendous start to the 2023 season, Trea Turner hit rock bottom in a game against the Miami Marlins where he went 0-5 and made an error that cost the Phillies the game. Turner walking off the field as Marlins players ran around and jumped for joy is burned in memory.

    Turner even admitted after the game “Obviously I’m the reason we lost the game.”

    Turner came to Philadelphia with a ton of hype. He had just signed a $300M contract and went berserk at the World Baseball Classic but through the Phillies first 107 games he had only hit .235 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI.

    That’s when it changed. A sold-out crowd came to their feet to show support for an underperforming player on a huge contract.

    Since the ovation, Turner has been one of the best players in baseball hitting .324 with 29 home runs and 99 RBI. He even went on a 10 game hit streak after the ovation. What happened on August 3 against the Royals was truly something special.

    The thing with Turner was that his failures through the first 107 games were not due to a lack of effort. It has been reported Turner was the first one in the cage and on the field and the last one off, the results just weren’t showing.

    Philadelphia has a reputation for being one of the toughest fan bases to play in front of, which is likely why things kept spiraling for Turner. The old adage that Philadelphia fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus is no more, Philadelphia is a city where we have our players back. If you give your all regardless of results the city will have your back and that makes Philadelphia a special place to be.

    Police investigate video of man getting knocked out by Yankees fan outside Xfinity Live!

    Police are investigating a viral video that shows a man getting smacked to the ground by another man wearing a Yankees jersey outside Xfinity Live! in South Philadelphia. 

    Police provided few details about the altercation when contacted Wednesday afternoon. The video began circulating on X, formerly Twitter, on the World Star Hip Hop account just before 1 a.m. Wednesday. The Yankees have been in town the last three days and completed a series sweep of the Phillies this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Police didn’t say whether the incident happened Monday night or after Tuesday night’s game that went into extra innings.

    In the video, a man wearing an Aaron Judge Yankees jersey is seen shouting at a man in a black shirt outside Xfinity Live! near the corner of 11th Street and Pattison Avenue. It’s unclear from the video what led to the argument. The man in the Yankees jersey goads the other man to “swing” at him and start a fight as fans are seen walking away from the ballpark in the background. Then the Yankees fan gets in the man’s face and shouts insults at him before clubbing him on the side of the head and knocking him to the ground. (NOTE: The video below contains explicit language). 

    Police didn’t say whether the man who was knocked out was injured or taken to a hospital. Police also didn’t say whether a suspect had been taken into custody. Authorities said anyone with information about the incident can call the Philadelphia police tip line at (215) 686-TIPS.

    What Should the Phillies Do with Whit Merrifield? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    Whit Merrifield signed a one year $8M deal with the Phillies late this off-season despite reportedly looking for a two year deal. Bryce Harper was a key recruiter in bringing him to sign in Philadelphia. It’s clear Harper’s word held a lot of water in both Philadelphia and Merrifield’s camp. Merrifield was signed to play the super utility role while providing some much needed contact from the right side of the plate. Merrifield can play all three outfield positions, second base, third base, and even has appeared at first base three times all while boasting a career .281 batting average.

    The only issue has been that Merrifield’s bat has been abysmal through the team’s first 84 games. In 138 at-bats this year for the Phillies the veteran has only 26 hits for an average of .188. “Two-Hit Whit” has now become No-Hit Whit.

    The 35 year old has been relatively consistent throughout his career batting over .300 twice and the All-Star team three times but just has not been able to adjust to a new role of limited playing time.

    The team is now over halfway through the season and it’s very likely that Merrifield would not make the post-season roster at this moment in time. The question now becomes, what should the Phillies do with Whit Merrifield?

    The least likely scenario would be that the Phillies would DFA Merrifield to open a roster spot. While this is very unlikely, we have seen the team move on from veterans who were owed money if it makes sense, Didi Gregorious and Jeurys Familia to be exact. Although he has not lived up to the $8M contract, eating the money just doesn’t seem likely given the back of the baseball card.

    The Phillies could try to trade Merrifield somewhere looking for a utility man to play every day. There is no question about it, he has not been good at the plate but the Phillies don’t really have a spot for Merrifield to get the reps that he needs to be the hitter he has been. Merrifield and the Phillies both took a risk and it just has not paid off, if Merrifield can find consistent playing time with another team, he might be a good fit for a team on the bubble.

    The most likely option is that the Phillies just continue being patient with him. While this certainly will not be perceived well by the fans, Merrfieild was an All-Star just last year with the Blue Jays. While it’s hard to imagine after watching his at-bats with the Phillies so far, he has a strong track record of hitting major league pitching. We have seen plenty of players get off to slow starts and figure it out after the All-Star break, maybe the time off will help. The truth of the matter is that the Phillies are 26 games above .500 heading into July with this version of Merrifield, it makes sense to bank him to figure things out before the playoffs.

    Whatever the Phillies decide to do, the trade deadline is just one month away now. It’s very likely Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies front office are exploring all options of upgrading one of the best teams in Phillies history.

    The Phillies have a Taijuan Walker problem.

    The veteran right hander signed a 4-year $77M contract in the 2022 offseason and has been a problem ever since. Despite leading the team with wins a season ago, Walker pitched to a 4.38 ERA and was left off the postseason roster all together due to some really bad outings down the stretch. This prompted Walker to like a few tweets that criticized Rob Thomson for a couple different decisions against the Diamondbacks in the NLCS. This isn’t something that is normal for this particularly close group.

    Walker came into the season this year with a pretty big dip in velocity consistently sitting at 89-90 mph before he was placed on the IL with a shoulder injury to start the season. This let Spencer Turnbull take the reigns and he was phenomenal. At the time of Walker’s return Turnbull led the league in ERA but was still taken out of the rotation. Since returning from the IL Walker has pitched 32.2 innings and has an ERA of 5.51 and a 5.29 FIP all while sporting the same velocity dip we saw in the spring.

    After allowing four earned runs in five innings pitched on Sunday night against the Cardinals, the questions regarding the team’s decision to move Turnbull out of the rotation in favor of Walker are not going away. It’s very possible that Walker is just not good anymore. He’s been through a ton of injuries, especially early in his career. For a team that has excelled at developing pitchers in recent years, the fact that they can’t fix Walker is very concerning.

    It’s no secret that Turnbull should’ve never left the rotation, it’s strictly because of salary. It sets a bad precedent for a team that is in win-now mode and tells Turnbull that no matter how well he plays he has no chance at keeping a spot in the rotation.

    The Phillies need to find a way to get out from under the Taijuan Walker contract soon, preferably at the trade deadline. It’s time to get Turnbull back in the rotation.

    Despite missing the bulk of spring training with unexpected arthroscopic surgery on his knee, Brandon Marsh has been the Phillies’ best and most consistent hitter through the team’s first 16 games.

    Marsh is batting over .300, leads the team in home runs, and is touting an OPS of just under 1 to start the year. Although Marsh was viewed as a platoon piece in left field, set to split time with the newly added Whit Merrifield, he has seemingly taken over the job for the time being. Marsh has proved thus far that he can indeed hit lefties while Merrifield has struggled to find his footing yet offensively. 

    There was a ton of skepticism when the Phillies traded their top prospect, catcher Logan O’Hoppe, to the Angels for Marsh at the 2022 trade deadline. O’Hoppe was highly regarded by the Phillies but the team lacked leverage because O’Hoppe’s path to the majors was blocked by JT Realmuto who was already considered by many as the best catcher in baseball and already signed to a big contract. 

    Marsh was still a great prospect though. Before reaching the majors in 2021, Marsh was ranked as the 53rd best prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America. His success in the minors had not translated to the majors however as he struggled to put the bat on the ball during his time with the Angels. 

    The trade made sense from a fit perspective as the Phillies had no real options in centerfield. Odubel Herrera’s career had fallen off a cliff at the time and Marsh was under team control until his age 30 season in 2028. 

    Although Marsh isn’t necessarily considered the centerfielder of the future just yet for the Phillies, the conversation is not dead. Johan Rojas’ bat has shown signs of life over the last week, but if Rojas can’t get it together offensively Marsh could very well work his way back into centerfield, and given his start to the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if he never gives it back. 

    Looking back almost two years later, this trade seems like a win-win for both clubs as Marsh has come into his own in Philadelphia after a very good 2023 season and a great start to 2024 while O’Hoppe seems to have a very bright future as the franchise catcher in Anaheim.

    PHILADELPHIA — Country music star Tim McGraw, son of the late Philadelphia Phillies reliever Tug McGraw, received a huge ovation during Game 3 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park Tuesday night.

    The “I Like It, I Love It” singer wore his father’s No. 45 McGraw Phillies jersey.

    Tug McGraw closed the 1980 World Series with a strikeout, jumping up into that famous pose to celebrate the Phillies’ first championship. He’s also synonymous in Philly with the phrase “Ya gotta believe!”

    Before the start of the World Series, Tim McGraw tweeted “Let’s go Phillies!” and a video of his father clinching the championship more than 40 years ago.

    Game 3 brought out other big names to The Bank.

    Philly sports champions Mike Schmidt, Julius Erving, Brandon Graham and Bernie Parent threw first pitches to 2008 World Series champions Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino.

    “Top Gun: Maverick” star Miles Teller who has been a mainstay at the stadium this postseason continued cheering on his hometown Phillies.

    New Jersey native and 2-time FIFA World Cup Champion Carli Lloyd, 2020 MLB Hall of Fame inductee Derek Jeter, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney, Eagles’ Fletcher Cox and supermodel Kate Upton, the wife of Houston Astros’ Justin Verlander, were all on hand to see the Phillies’ 7-0 win.

    First lady Jill Biden is set to attend Game 4 Wednesday night.

    South Jersey family returns Rhys Hoskins’ Game 5 home run ball: ‘Most amazing day of my life’

    Kevin Hartwell, of Mullica Township, was at the game with his 10-year-old daughter, Lia, and his 9-year-old son Kevin.

    PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Bryce Harper’s two-run home run helped get the Phillies to the World Series, but it was Rhys Hoskins who got things going earlier in the game.

    Game 5 was scoreless until Hoskins belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

    But what you didn’t see on TV is what happened in the stands.

    Kevin Hartwell, of Mullica Township, was at the game with his 10-year-old daughter, Lia, and his 9-year-old son Kevin.

    Somehow the home run ball came right to them.

    “Yea that ball must have bounced off somebody to my side, then off someone behind me. It was coming down rows. I jumped on it and picked it up,” recalled Hartwell.

    “Everybody was so happy that they were pushing everyone and I was trying to hold onto my dad so I wouldn’t fall!” recalled Lia.

    “I didn’t know who caught it and I was like, ‘Who caught it?’ And then he raised his hand with the ball in it!” added 9-year-old Kevin.

    On Tuesday, Hartwell says they returned the ball to Hoskins — and what they received in return was even better.

    “We got a signed bat, two signed balls by Rhys Hoskins. And we got pictures with him! It’s probably the most amazing day of my life,” said an excited Lia.

    “He said he’s thankful for us because he wanted that ball. He said he was giving us the stuff because we were being generous by giving him the ball back,” added Kevin.

    Now, this family has two memories to last a lifetime.

    “It just feels good. He deserved that ball,” said Hartwell.
