An obstacle stood in the way of the Burroughs High girls’ basketball team on Saturday night but after a little more than an hour versus visiting Culver City in a CIF Southern Section Division V second-round game, a 51-23 decision emerged for the hosts, and it catapulted the Bears to a quarterfinal game versus Carter of Rialto.

The game Wednesday will be held at Carter and will begin at 7 p.m.

For now, the Bears (20-10) can bank on its two impressive playoff wins and prepare for what should be a very good game against a solid opponent that is 18-9 overall.

Vicky Oganyan is the longtime Burroughs head coach and as a defensive-minded mentor, was glad at how her team pressed throughout.

“We were locked in on our defensive assignments tonight,” she said. “We rebounded well and ran a good offense.”

The Bears, who have won seven of their last nine games, collected 43 rebounds, and the Centaurs grabbed 27 caroms and were outrebounded 24-17 in the opening half.

Burroughs never trailed and were led in scoring by sophomore guard Isabella Amayakyan, who delivered a game-best 20 points while junior guard Jessica Mena added 11 points and senior guard Elizabeth Amoroso chimed in with 10 points.

The Bears shot 38 percent on 19 of 50 from the field and also made eight of 15 for 53.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The Centaurs (13-13) were successful on 20 percent after making 10 of 50 from the field and converted two of two for 100 percent from the charity line.

Burroughs came out and led 12-6 after one quarter and forged a 28-13 advantage at halftime.

Amayakyan tallied eight points in the opening period and added seven in the second quarter and had 15 points while the team made 11 of 30 for 36.6 percent.

Amayakyan’s bucket with 1:24 left on the clock in the second frame made it 28-13.

Mena scored four points in the opening stanza but didn’t score in the second period while Amoroso had two points in the second period.

Amoroso tallied eight points in the third frame as the Bears led 42-21 and Mena tossed in seven points including a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Grace Barton finished with six points and made a trey in the second and third quarters.

Senior center Valentina Morales contributed two points in the second period and sophomore forward Rielle Waddell slipped in two points in the second quarter as the Bears led 17-6 with 6:40 left.

Culver City was paced by guard/forward Makenna Lohmann’s eight points and tallied six of her points in the second half.

Senior forward Lua Maghzi and guard/forward Beatrix Wada both accounted for four points for the Centaurs.

It was up-tempo from the start and it took three hours to compete but every minute was worth it as host Burbank High took on Lancaster which proved a worthy opponent in its CIF Southern Section Division VI opening-round playoff game at Memorial Field.

Each team scored during the four-quarter affair, and each played with energy and skill and when it concluded, the Bulldogs earned a 52-43 victory on Friday night.

Burbank will play on the road next Friday at Riverside Roosevelt in a second-round game which knocked off previously unbeaten Crespi 33-24.

Hector Valencia is Burbank’s head coach and appreciated what he saw during those tense four periods.

“They had one of the fastest offenses we’ve seen in a while,” he explained. “Their tempo got us off guard and it took us a bit to settle down and start playing at that tempo but once we did the defense held their own.”

Burbank had six interceptions and sophomore wide receiver/cornerback/safety Diego Plancarte had four and each were a crucial element to the win.

“The interceptions were key,” Valencia added. “We knew that if we got them out of their running game, things would balance out in our favor.”

The usual suspects were present in the spotlight for the Bulldogs (9-3) as junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte threw three touchdowns and all three went to junior wide receiver Tyler Hudson, who had 10 catches for 143 yards.

“We played well. We had ups and downs but we all got everything straight and came out with the win,” said Laporte, who completed 20 of 32 attempts for 321 yards and one interception.

Laporte’s first scoring toss was a 34-yarder and came with 8:52 left in the first quarter and gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead.

Laporte’s second touchdown throw was a 12-yard and occurred with 4:57 remaining in the same frame and made it 14-6.

Laporte then found Hudson with a 22-yard strike with just under a minute left in the third period for a 45-29 advantage.

Burbank wide receiver Elijah Pendleton, who had an interception, caught eight passes for 151 yards and also added a 46-yard scoring gallop at 9:00 before halftime as Burbank led 21-14.

Junior running back/linebacker Troy Wells tacked on a pair of scoring runs for the Bulldogs as the hosts charged ahead 27-21 on his 10-yard run burst with 4:05 on the clock in the second quarter.

Wells tossed in a one-yard run with 3:19 left on the clock in the third period for a 38-29 lead. Laporte also found senior wide receiver Exodus Freeman (10 yards on one catch) on a two-point conversion pass.

“Troy had an outstanding game for us at running back and it helped balance our offense so it was not just the pass they had to stop,” Valencia stated.

For good measure, senior Ryan Mendoza nailed a 30-yard field goal with 2:09 left before the intermission as Burbank marched ahead 30-21.

Burbank senior wide receiver Chase Miles had one reception for 17 yards and one interception.

“From the first, we loved running man blitzes against their offense because we believed their quarterback struggled under pressure,” Miles said. “We sent blitzes to neutralize their running game and force their quarterback to make uncomfortable throws.”

Miles knew that Burbank would be able to move the ball and score points.

“Offensively as the game progressed, we liked running the ball more and more as it was hard for their defense to stop it,” he said.

Junior wide receiver/cornerback Ronald Gordon also chipped in with a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs.

Lancaster quarterback senior Michael Marsenich tossed three touchdown passes and added a scoring run but was picked off six times.

Marsenich had a 16-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jaheim Redmond as 10:36 remained in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead for the Eagles (8-3).

Marsenich then found senior wide receiver Jayson Wilson on a 21-yard rocket late in the first period that evened it as 14-14. Senior running back/safety Jacob Walker added a two-point run and also contributed an interception.

Marsenich unloaded a 45-yard pass to senior wide receiver Chace Beoranje with 1:28 left in the second frame and sophomore running back Joziah Davis added a two-point run that drew Lancaster within 30-29.

Marsenich scored on an eight-yard keeper with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter and senior running back Arthur Turner added a two-point run for the Eagles who came within 52-43.

Lancaster’s sophomore wide receiver Terrance Harper had a 65-yard kickoff return with just under nine minutes left in the second period that evened it at 21-21.

Turner struck again and this time it was a 55-yard sprint late in the third period that saw Lancaster get within 45-35.

There were several elements involved in Tuesday night’s clash between host Burbank High and Camarillo in a CIF Southern Section Division III opening-round boys’ water polo playoff match at the Burroughs pool.

It was well-played by each, and it was physical and there was scoring and defense. It had everything and it was close.

The No. 8 seeded Bulldogs led from start to finish and weathered a third quarter offensive lull but still defeated the No. 1 seeded Scorpions 13-10 behind a six-goal effort from junior Avvo Ilangesyan.

In the third match of the season, Camarillo defeated Burbank 20-17, and this could be seen as a revenge match.

David Arakelyan is Burbank’s head coach and wanted his club to give full effort.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my boys coming back and beating a team that beat us very early in the season,” he said. “It was to a point where we looked like we had no chance the first time around and this time we led the entire game so I couldn’t ask for more growth from my players. I’m just excited to see what the next couple of games hold for us.”

It was crucial that the Bulldogs get off to a strong start.

“I thought we came out really well in the first half which is exactly what we wanted to do,” he said. “We wanted to set the tone early and make sure that we weren’t playing catch-up throughout the entire game, but we slipped up in the third quarter and made some very fundamental rookie mistakes that cannot be made at this point in the season.”

Another key member was Burbank goaltender, Dion Keshishyan, who had 17 saves.

“Hats off to Dion for playing an outstanding game. We needed every single one of those saves in order to beat the No. 1 seed,” Arakelyan said. “So I’m proud of the boys and can’t wait for the next round.”

Senior Michael Bakrgyan added four tallies for Burbank (14-13), which led 4-2 after one quarter and 8-3 at halftime.

Camarillo (15-13) outscored the hosts 4-1 in the third period and tallied four goals in the fourth quarter while limiting the visitors to three goals.

Renny Owings was brilliant for the Scorpions as he scored a match-best seven goals including four goals in the third frame that trimmed the lead to 8-4 with 6:01 left, 8-5 with 5:21 on the clock, 8-6 with 3:40 showing and 8-7 with 1:32 remaining on the ticker.

Owings also added two tallies in the final quarter that cut the advantage to 10-8 with 5:40 left and 12-10 with thirty-three seconds on the clock. Owings had a tally that sliced the lead to 3-2 with 1:22 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs led 1-0 on a five-footer from Ilangesyan with 5:18 remaining and 2-0 on an eight-footer by senior Daniel Babelyan with 4:34 left.

Ilangesyan’s nine-footer with 2:16 remaining made it 3-1 and Bakryan’s 12-footer with ten seconds on the clock extended the lead to 4-2.

Burbank scored four straight goals and led 8-2 as senior Michael Bakrhyan nailed a seven-footer with 5:03 and senior Jack Babelyan canned a 12-footer with 3:30 on the clock to make it 6-2.

Ilangesyan added back-to-back goals and they came with 2:03 left to make it 7-2 and with 1:01 remaining for an 8-2 edge.

Ilangesyan’s five-footer with forty-six seconds in the third period handed the Bulldogs a 9-7 edge.

Senior Daniel Babelyan hit a 12-footer with 6:34 left in the fourth period for a 10-7 lead and Ilangesyan slipped in a 10-footer with 5:13 remaining for an 11-8 cushion.

Bakrgyan then tacked on two goals, and they were a 10-footer with 2:25 on the clock for a 12-7 lead and a 15-footer with seven seconds left for a three-goal cushion.

Mac Barlow had a goal with 4:19 left in the initial frame that cut the lead to 2-1 for the Scorpions and added a tally in the fourth period and 3:36 left that made it 11-9.

Camarillo’s Christian Minero scored with seven seconds left in the second period that made it 8-3.
