International Day of Friendship is based in part on “the recognition of the relevance and importance of friendship as a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world.”

This special day was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly because “friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.”

“Over the last several years we have distributed well over 10,000 copies of The Way to Happiness to uplift neighborhoods in Washington State,” said the group’s coordinator. “Nonreligious in nature, this booklet is used by people of virtually every culture and creed and empowers individuals to help others and make a difference in their neighborhoods and beyond.”

Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Seattle were recognized for their work with Food Lifeline and their continuing efforts to address hunger in western Washington.

    Press Release

    updated: May 16, 2019

International Volunteer Recognition Day was celebrated at an open house at the Church of Scientology in Seattle acknowledging its Volunteer Ministers Corps and their 15 years of service with Food Lifeline, a member of the national hunger relief group Feeding America.

Guest speaker Kirsten Riley, volunteer coordinator with Food Lifeline’s Hunger Solution Center in Seattle, acknowledged the Volunteer Ministers for their longstanding partnership with the group and their monthly work at the center sorting and repacking food for those in need.

In her presentation, Ms. Riley highlighted the plight of those going without food in Washington State. Statistics show that one in eight people face hunger in Washington—one in five of them children.

Volunteer Ministers join over 13,000 volunteers annually at Food Lifeline to repack food that is then distributed to over 300 food banks, shelters and meal programs throughout western Washington, providing the equivalent of 116,000 meals every day for children, adults and seniors.

“It’s our privilege to help Food Lifeline with its mission to end hunger in our state,” said Danar Hoverson who supervises the Volunteer Minister Corps in Washington. “We routinely work with groups such as Food Lifeline, the Queen Anne Food Bank, WAVOAD—Washington Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster—to help address real needs in our area.”

In creating the Volunteer Ministers program in the mid 1970s, Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard wrote: “A Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

The Church of Scientology provides free online training on various subjects including dealing with stress, creating a good marriage, communication skills, parenting and disaster relief services. These courses are available on the Volunteer Ministers website. Anyone who desires to help others may increase their skills and opportunities for volunteer service through this training.

Raising Awareness on the Danger of Escalating Opioid Abuse

With more Americans now dying of drug overdose than traffic accidents, the Church of Scientology Seattle and the Foundation for a Drug-Free World join forces to combat the deadly opioid epidemic.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 26, 2017

The Church of Scientology Seattle is sponsoring local events this summer to highlight the dangers of opioid abuse and solutions to this deadly epidemic.

At an open forum at the Church, organized by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Terrie Johnston, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Seattle Police Department, briefed community leaders on the link between drug use and crime.

I could hold this Church up as a model for what we want every neighborhood to do.

Terrie Johnston, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Seattle Police Department

As in many parts of the country, Ms. Johnston said, opioid use has been escalating in Seattle. The Washington State Department of Health reports 995 opioid-related overdose deaths from 2012 to 2016 in Seattle and the rest of King County. In that same time period, more than 1,700 died in counties across the state. And nationwide, overdoses have surpassed traffic accidents as the No. 1 cause of accidental deaths.

Ms. Johnston indicated that the cost to the community is no less dramatic: As much as 75 percent of crimes committed in Seattle involve drugs—directly or indirectly. She also noted an increase in accident rates with a higher proportion of DUIs attributed to marijuana use.

Ms. Johnston acknowledged the Drug-Free World volunteers for reaching out in the community with the truth about drugs. “You never know the ripple effects of what you do,” she said. “It’s been a great partnership. I could hold this Church up as a model for what we want every neighborhood to do.”

The Church of Scientology and its members support the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, whose Truth About Drugs campaign is one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention initiatives. Thanks to this support, the Foundation provides—free of charge—drug education booklets, videos and educator guides to teachers, mentors and civic and community leaders.

According to the United Nations Office on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, “Every dollar spent on prevention can save governments up to ten dollars in later costs.”

Although one of the most affluent communities in the United States, Seattle still suffers from homelessness and poverty.

One of the organizations dealing with poverty in the city is the Queen Anne Food Bank (QAFB), which serves 2,500 sack lunches each month. And their Food Bank program also provides 350 families with the groceries they need.

Church of Scientology Seattle Volunteer Ministers partners with the organization, sorting and packing food for QAFB customers.

QAFB recently began a new service, the Pack Program, an extension to their Monday-to-Thursday meal program that provides bags of food for the weekend. Scientology Volunteer Ministers donated 1,450 food items to the program to help get it off the ground.

Those willing to volunteer their time and resources should contact Queen Anne Food Bank at info@qafb.org or call (206) 216-4102.

Residents in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood enjoyed the annual National Night Out block party at the Church of Scientology.

    Press Release

    Aug 12, 2016

The Church of Scientology Seattle and the Seattle chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation celebrated this year’s National Night Out Against Crime with a block party featuring live entertainment and barbecue.

Seattle has had a long history of supporting National Night Out, an annual campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, bringing neighbors together in the name of safer and better places to live. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite communities.

“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents. It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”

Ann Pearce, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology Seattle

In keeping with the purpose of the evening and to help spread the message of the rewards of living an honest life, volunteers handed out copies of The Way to Happiness, a nonreligious moral code written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard and based entirely upon common sense.

The theme of the evening was a precept from this booklet that undercuts crime: “Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you.”

The Church sponsors The Way to Happiness campaign to uplift neighborhoods in the Seattle community. The booklet provides a guideline to living a life based on self-respect and personal integrity—traditional values that go a long way to reducing crime.

The block party featured a live band, a unique 1924 Model T Ford truck where the barbecue was staged, a balloon artist and visits from city personnel and the Seattle Police Department.

And the highlight of the evening, at least for the under 12 crowd, was the arrival of a fire engine from Seattle’s Fire Department Station 8. Youngsters received badges from the firefighters and it wasn’t only the kids who clambered up onto the seats of the bright red fire truck.

To complement the message of The Way to Happiness, volunteers from another humanitarian campaign supported by the Church of Scientology were also on hand—the Seattle chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.

Drugs and crime are inextricably interrelated in today’s society. And the Drug-Free World materials present the unvarnished facts about commonly abused drugs in a youth-friendly format to help young people make the self-determined decision not to abuse drugs.

“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents,” said Ann Pearce, public affairs director of the Church. “It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”

The Church of Scientology and its members proudly share the tools for happier living contained inThe Way to Happiness. Over 4 million copies have been distributed in the last year alone.

The Seattle Chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation celebrated Friendship Day by reaching out to their community with the common-sense moral code that helps create lasting friendships by instilling decency and respect.

    Press Release

    Aug 3, 2016

In the spirit of friendship, volunteers from the Seattle chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation passed out copies of The Way to Happiness at the world-famous Pike Place Market and in downtown Seattle on Friendship Day 2016.

Written by author and humanitarian L. Ron HubbardThe Way to Happiness is a common-sense moral code containing 21 basic principles for a better quality of life.

“On this International Day of Friendship, let us resolve to cherish and cultivate as many warm relationships as possible, enriching our own lives and enhancing the future.”

    Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

The Way to Happiness is part of our campaign to uplift neighborhoods in Washington State and forms a guideline that anyone can use to take charge of their lives,” said the group’s coordinator. Nonreligious in nature, this booklet is used by people of virtually every culture and creed and empowers individuals to help others and make a difference in their neighborhoods and beyond.

In each booklet they handed out, Seattle volunteers placed a flier that explained the purpose of this U.N. day. International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the U.N. General Assembly because “friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.”

In his Friendship Day statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “When greed supersedes concerns about the health of our planet or its inhabitants, when fanatic attachment to ideology is pursued at all costs, and when people suffer human rights violations because they are considered somehow less than equal, the heritage of humanity is betrayed and our future wellbeing is placed in peril…. On this International Day of Friendship, let us resolve to cherish and cultivate as many warm relationships as possible, enriching our own lives and enhancing the future.”

Over the past year, Washington State volunteers have distributed 10,000 copies of The Way to Happiness, placing them in the hands of individuals and giving booklets to hundreds of businesses for the use and benefit of their customers.

The Way to Happiness was written in 1981. Immensely popular since its first publication, the campaign has been embraced by more than 250,000 groups and individuals, with some 115 million copies distributed in 115 languages in 186 nations.

The Church of Scientology and its members are proud to share the tools for happier living contained in The Way to Happiness.
