  • Chris Pratt Pitched Having an AI ‘Actor’ Star as the Villain in ‘Mercy’: ‘I Don’t Think That’s a Good Idea at All’

Chris Pratt recently told Entertainment Weekly that he suggested an AI “actor” play the tyrannical AI judge in his new sci-fi thriller “Mercy.” However, the idea was quickly shut down by the production, and Rebecca Ferguson was cast in the role.

“I remember talking about the various people who could play these characters, and early on, I was like, ‘Should we have it be an AI, where the judge is actually AI, and we create an AI?’ And everyone was like, ‘No, I don’t think so,’” Pratt said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s a good idea at all.’”

He added, “So it was actually never a possibility any more than anything is a possibility when you’re zeroing in on what the outcome is going to be and what the choices are that you’re going to make. It’s a collaborative effort.”

Pratt then recalled another off-the-wall pitch he had early in the planning stages of “Mercy.”

“But one of my pitches early on was like, ‘What if [my character] could pick the judge, and I could pick Oprah, or I could pick anyone I want. Because ultimately it’s just a face on a [screen].’ And I thought that would be funny to have Oprah do it.”

Amazon MGM’s “Mercy” follows Pratt as Chris Raven, a cop from the near future who is on trial for the murder of his wife (Annabelle Wallis). Ferguson’s AI judge gives him 90 minutes to prove his innocence or face immediate execution.

The themes surrounding the oppressive nature of AI made the emerging tech a focal point during the “Mercy” press tour. At the film’s New York premiere, Pratt told Variety that he’s confident he’ll never be replaced by AI. He called the panic surrounding synthetic AI performers like Tilly Norwood “all bullshit.”

“I don’t feel like someone’s gonna replace me that’s AI,” Pratt said. “I heard this Tilly Norwood thing, I think that’s all bullshit. I’ve never seen her in a movie. I don’t know who this bitch is. It’s all fake until it’s something.”

  • The First Trailer for ‘Mercy’ Teases Chris Pratt’s AI Showdown

A cop accused of murdering his wife must battle the highly advanced crime-solving tech of the future to prove his innocence. It could be Minority Report. Or it could be Mercy, which doesn’t quite look on the level of that Philip K. Dick-Steven Spielberg-Tom Cruise classic, but it does have some intriguing points, including Rebecca Ferguson as an AI-powered judge equipped to execute instantly in the event of a guilty verdict.

Chris Pratt is the star, though, so you’ve been warned; this will mostly be the Chris Pratt Show. According to NYCC’s panel description, Mercy is set in the near future, as “an LAPD detective (Pratt) wakes up strapped to an execution chair, on trial for murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to Judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson), an advanced AI system, or face immediate death.”

Check out the first trailer for Mercy, which also stars Kali Reis (True Detective), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), and Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), among others.

Director Timur Bekmanbetov is known for his high-stakes thrillers; his previous works include Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, as well as Night Watch and Day Watch, early-career Russian releases before he ventured to Hollywood.

Can Pratt’s character beat the system, having helped bring the system to life? Will he realize the dangers of giving AI too much control? Will Mercy join movies like Minority Report and Demolition Man in the pantheon of entertaining “future cop” movies, or will it be as doomed as a convicted killer in near-future LA?

Perhaps of even greater concern is how much of a “screen-life” movie it appears to be. Will it be next year’s War of the Worlds, with Chris Pratt doing all of his acting from chair jail?

We’ll find out January 23, 2026, when Mercy hits theaters, including in IMAX and 3D.

  • Chris Pratt on baby no. 5 — everything he’s said about expanding family with Katherine Schwarzenegger

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger are already proud parents of three, those being daughters Lyla, five, and Eloise, three, plus son Ford, who will turn a year old this November. Chris is also a doting father to Jack, who turned 13 just earlier this month, shared with his ex-wife Anna Faris. However, as a part of the famously large and very tight Schwarzenegger family, the couple have on occasion expressed their desire to expand their brood further.

Family patriarch Arnold Schwarzenegger himself is a father to five kids, sharing four of them with his ex-wife Maria Shriver (including Katherine) and one, his son Joseph, resulting from an affair with Mildred Baena. And having a set of loving grandparents on hand has definitely made it easier for the couple to open up about their desire for a large family.

Below, read on for more on what Chris, 46, and Katherine, 35, have said about wanting more kids (a fourth with Katherine, fifth overall) and their philosophy on a large and loving family…

    ‘A big family’

Back in 2022, just months after welcoming their second daughter Eloise, the couple spoke with Us Weekly about the idea of growing even more. “I come from a big family, so I love the idea of having a lot of kids around and a big family,” Katherine told the publication. “Whatever God has in his plan for us is what we’ll do.”

She especially found joy in taking parenting advice from her mom Maria, herself a mom-of-four. “I feel really lucky to be able to have obviously an amazing role model in my mom, and just being able to see how she balances it all. Just learning from her, being able to bounce things off of her and, at the end of the day, just knowing that family time is the most important time.”

    ‘The future?’

Babies were on Chris’ mind quite early in their relationship. Back in 2019, soon after proposing to Katherine, he told Entertainment Tonight that he saw “lots of kids” in their life together. “The future? Oh. Lots of kids. Maybe less time spent working, more time spent enjoying life. I always want to be that guy that works to live, not lives to work.”

Their daughters Lyla and Eloise were born two years apart

After welcoming their daughter Lyla in 2021, he continued to express a desire for an even bigger family. “I would love to have more, as many as the man upstairs will provide,” he told E! News, quipping right after: “We’ll do it. I’ll probably have to talk to Katherine about that but my plan is, let’s go.”

    ‘Rush’ to kids

While neither Katherine nor Chris have spoken about the desire for more kids since welcoming Ford last year, the Jurassic World actor told Men’s Journal in 2023 that he’d rather have kids while he’s young and able to be with them. “People say all the time, ‘Don’t rush to have kids.’ I personally disagree,” he explained.

Ford, the star couple’s youngest, will turn one year old in November

“Rush. Have them. Of course, make sure you find a great partner, but don’t wait. I was talking to Adam Sandler a while back and he said, ‘Every day you wait is a day they don’t get to have you in their life.’ The younger you have kids, the more time they get to have with you. It’s wild. Having kids is incredible. The things you normally take for granted in life are new.”

  • Chris Pratt Says He’d Be “More Than Happy” To Join DCU After Visiting James Gunn On ‘Superman: Legacy’ Set

Chris Pratt Says He’d Be “More Than Happy” To Join DCU After Visiting James Gunn On ‘Superman: Legacy’ Set

After taking on the MCU multiverse, Chris Pratt isn’t ruling out a jaunt to the DCU.

Following his recent visit with director James Gunn on the set of Superman: Legacy, the actor said “there’s always a chance” he could make the franchise leap, but he played coy when it came to naming a character he’d like to play.

“I just have to leave that to the fans and people like James to decide,” Pratt told TMZ. “I’m not exactly sure. I’m truly not sure.

When asked flat-out if he’d join the competing franchise, Pratt didn’t hesitate in declaring, “Yes, of course”

“If it could fit into my schedule and it made sense, I would love it,” he continued. “Of course I love playing Star-Lord, and hopefully there’s a chance that can come back. I just feel so blessed to be able to do any of it, to be considered for any of it. If it’s right and the fans would love it, I’d be more than happy to do it.”

His comments come after Gunn shared a photo of Pratt on the set of Superman: Legacy earlier this month. “Always nice to have friends visiting set,” he captioned the post.

Pratt previously made his MCU debut as Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which was directed by Gunn. They reunited for the sequels in 2017 and 2023, as well as Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Since taking over DC Studios with Peter Safran in 2022, Gunn has been hard at work directing Superman: Legacy, which will kick off a new DC multiverse. The movie stars David Corenswet as the titular Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

After confirming he’s open to casting MCU actors in his upcoming DCU work, Gunn told Empire that a crossover between the two comic book worlds is “more likely now that I’m in charge,” adding: “That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

Gunn has since been in talks with Pratt’s Guardians co-star Pom Klementieff to play a “specific character” in the DCU, she recently confirmed.

“Didn’t Know What To Do”: Chris Pratt Reveals How He Blew His First Paycheck Of 75K USD

In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning, Chris Pratt disclosed that he had not made the best financial decisions with his first sizable salary in the business. Despite his modest origins, Pratt admitted that he had not been thrifty at first when questioned about his financial philosophy following his success. “I was under the impression that I would never run out of money,” he remembered with a laugh.

He clarified that years of living on a restricted budget had shaped his viewpoint. Pratt still remembered clearly how he felt when he received his first large salary of 75,000 USD from a TV movie. “Are you serious?” he said hilariously.

Chris Pratt’s journey to financial literacy

Pratt’s narrative exemplifies a frequent experience among persons who unexpectedly achieve success in the entertainment business, often having difficulties in managing their newfound money. His trip also emphasizes the value of financial literacy, which he learned later in life.

Chris Pratt recounted a humorous anecdote about his early experiences with money, sharing that he once humorously sang his version of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper,” jokingly declaring, “I was like, ‘I’m never gonna wait again. Fuck you, bitches, I am leaving.’” He then comically added, “And then about two months later, I was like, ‘Where’d that money go?!’”

Following his early successes, Pratt concluded that he needed to improve his money management. He spoke about how he thought his money would endure and how he traveled to locations like Hawaii and Australia. The idea of investing in and purchasing a yacht made him laugh.

However, he eventually had to confront the truth about his spending patterns. Pratt acknowledged that, after giving it some thought, he found it hard to believe how much money he was spending.

A closer at Chris’s financial growth and career highlights

Given his family’s financial difficulties, the Jurassic World star admitted to not having learned anything about financial literacy as a child. As his spending increased, Pratt saw the need to develop a financial plan. He said that he did not know how to manage money. It would arrive, and he would squander it. It took him a long time to understand he needed to improve his financial skills.

He highlighted the need for long-term preparation and financial stability for his family. Pratt added that he needed to contemplate how he would get to the point where if he quit working one day, he and his family would be OK. He regarded creating a financial literacy strategy later in life as one of the steps toward maturity.

Pratt listed several career accomplishments that made him feel successful in his work. These included getting his SAG card, securing representation, and appearing in a Carl’s Jr. commercial. He did, however, emphasize that purchasing a home for his mother after being cast in the television series Everwood was his most memorable experience.

  • Jurassic World 4 Adds Manuel Garcia-Rulfo to Its Enigamtic Cast

Jurassic World 4 Adds Manuel Garcia-Rulfo to Its Enigamtic Cast

    Image: David Livingston/WireImage

There’s a new human entering the Jurassic World franchise, and he’s gonna be fighting for his life in this new film.

Per Deadline, actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo—best known for The Magnificent Seven’s 2016 reboot and Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer—has signed on for a starring role. (Sadly, he probably won’t be a public defender for dinosaurs or a dinosaur cowboy, two things this franchise could use.) Details on his character are currently under wraps, but he joins Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in the Gareth Edwards-directed film. For Garcia-Rulfo, who’s also headlining Netflix’s Pedro Páramo, this marks his biggest film role to date.

Unlike the last Jurassic trilogy, this new flick doesn’t plan to bring back any returning actors from the previous runs like Chris Pratt or Laura Dern. At the moment, it’s not even fully clear what this’ll be about beyond the general premise of humans running away from dinosaurs that want to eat them. Written by Jurassic alum David Koepp, the movie’s been previously described as a “fresh take” on the material, whose last installment was Jurassic World: Dominion back in 2022. It’s expected to start filming in the UK in June, then in Malta from July all the way to September.

Jurassic World 4 is currently dated to come out on July 2, 2025. (A busy month that’ll be, between that, Superman, and The Fantastic Four.) We’ll have more news on the film as things develops.

  • Chris Pratt, Katherine Schwarzenegger could’ve given Craig Ellwood teardown ‘some honor,’ architect’s daughter says

Chris Pratt, Katherine Schwarzenegger could’ve given Craig Ellwood teardown ‘some honor,’ architect’s daughter says

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger demolished a famed midcentury home designed by late architect Craig Ellwood to make room for a new, modern mansion.

That’s not how Erin Ellwood, Craig Ellwood’s daughter, said she would have gone about it.

“I think it would have been really cool to keep it and do something … add to it in a really interesting, innovative way,” Ellwood told The Times on Monday. “But you know, maybe this just isn’t their style. I mean, it clearly isn’t if they’re building a farmhouse.”

Ellwood, an Ojai-based interior designer, spoke to The Times about her father’s late ‘40s Brentwood commission, known among locals as the Zimmerman House after original owners Martin and Eva Zimmerman. The property, which she described as a “time capsule” because of its Midcentury Modern aesthetic, was purchased last year and set for demolition seemingly without reason. In recent weeks, several reports revealed that the Marvel star and Schwarzenegger purchased the lot for $12.5 million and that their new mansion — to be designed by Ken Ungar — was the reason for the teardown.

On X (formerly Twitter), the celebrity couple quickly faced ire from architecture enthusiasts and other critics. “Wow,” wrote one user who shared an Architectural Digest article. “Wow as in, this is really bad.”

“Chris Pratt bought a BEAUTIFUL 1950s mid century modern house designed by THE Craig Ellwood and demolished it to build a s— McMansion,” one X user wrote on Friday. “My mid century modernist heart is shattered.”

“Imagine tearing this historic house down to build a ‘modern farmhouse’ McMansion,” a second user wrote on Saturday.

As more reports about the Ellwood razing surfaced, handfuls of social media users also revived “Worst Chris,” a dig that stemmed from a viral tweet about the Hollywood Chrises (Chris Hemsworth, Pratt, Chris Pine and Chris Evans).

Representatives for Pratt and Schwarzenegger did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment on Monday.

Like Pratt’s online critics, Erin Ellwood said she only learned about the reason for the demolition earlier this month. But she told The Times that she understands “it comes with the territory.”

Throughout his decades-long career, Craig Ellwood brought his indoor-outdoor living approach to several properties across Southern California, including his beachfront Hunt House in Malibu. The Zimmerman house, with its floor-to-ceiling glass windows and open floor plans, was designed early in her father’s career and wasn’t the best representation of his work, Ellwood said.

“It doesn’t break my heart,” she added of the raze.

Still, the home, sold to “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” creator Sam Rolfe and wife Hilda Rolfe in 1975— stands for a timeless architectural movement. Erin likens her father’s lasting Midcentury designs to “the Chanel of architecture.”

“There’s certain fashions that will never go away. They’ll always stay strong,” she said.

The couple’s modern farmhouse aesthetic may not be Erin’s preferred style, but she said she understands why Pratt and Schwarzenegger would want the Zimmerman House plot: proximity to Schwarzenegger’s mother, Maria Shriver. The former first lady of California reportedly lives across the street from the property.

“I don’t feel bitter. I understand the love of family, I understand wanting to be close to my mother or my mother in-law,” said Ellwood, whose late actor mother Gloria Henry also lived by Shriver. “I understand being a multimillionaire and wanting to build exactly what I want and keep my family close. I get all that. Unfortunately, it involved tearing something down.”

Razing the Zimmerman House is not just “so brutal,” but wasteful in a variety of ways, Ellwood added. She lamented that the home did not have some kind of ceremonious sendoff — final tours for architecture students, a celebratory cocktail hour, donation of materials for architectural studies — before it was torn down.

“Is there something more creative that could’ve been done in the process of taking it away that could’ve given it some honor?” Ellwood asks.

She was speaking to The Times on what would have been her father’s 102nd birthday. She says Craig Ellwood “stood for innovation and a new way of California living.”

“I think what people are responding to is [the home] is like this time capsule,” she said. “I think that’s what hurts people so much — is that there aren’t that many great ones.”

With the Zimmerman House now a pile of rubble and Pratt and Schwarzenegger’s new mansion reportedly still in early construction, Ellwood said she hopes the couple considers giving back to the architecture community amid the backlash.

“They’ve got money,” she said. “It would behoove them to do something kind to the world of architecture.”

  • AARP's Horrible AI-Powered Mario Hologram, Explained [Update]

AARP's Horrible AI-Powered Mario Hologram, Explained [Update]

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is happening this week in Las Vegas and buried inside the massive convention floor—filled with new computers, a car you can drive with a PlayStation 5 controller, monitors, and other tech—is a strange, horrible, holographic Mario powered by AI and sponsored by AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons).

Update 01/10/2024 at 10:10 p.m. EST: Proto and AARP confirmed with Kotaku that Nintendo was not involved with the hologram at CES and sent over this statement:

The AI hologram animation briefly seen today is an unfinished proof of concept tested for a client to demonstrate technological capabilities and innovation. It is not intended for commercial release. AARP and Nintendo were not involved in the inadvertent showing today. The fact that so many gamers of the world have taken notice shows that they are the best fans in the world and we salute them.

    Original story continues below.

As spotted and recorded by Twitter (or X, I don’t care) user Greggory on January 9, a hologram booth inside an AARP area at CES 2024 contained a short, 3D CG Mario. This familiar Nintendo character can answer questions and react to attendees. However, his stilted, robotic, monotone voice and delivery are very off putting and weird. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d rather have Chris Pratt’s Mario over this holographic mess.

At one point Greggory claimed an AARP rep at the booth told him to ask Mario how to buy a video game. Mario then proceeded to offer the helpful advice of going to Target to buy it.

On an unrelated note: This particular holographic booth seems to be co-sponsored by Target, as the store’s logo is plastered on the machine.

What is this thing and how is the AARP connected to it?

While a robotic-sounding AI-powered Mario hologram is strange enough, it’s made even weirder by its connection to AARP. Why is this organization, primarily dedicated to advocating for elderly and retired people, showing off a holo-Mario? Well, it’s part of AgeTech, a larger technology push from AARP focused on meeting the needs of “the world’s aging population.” Yes, people who are familiar with Mario are getting old, us included. AgeTech includes various start-ups, investors, creators, and businesses.

One of these members appears to be Proto Hologram, a company that designs and creates large holographic-like boxes that can be placed in stores or public areas and can be used to advertise stuff using life-like people or mascots. According to a blog from the AARP about its CES 2024 booth, Proto’s 3D holograms can also “help combat loneliness and improve telehealth.”

In the lead-up to CES 2024, Proto and AARP have been hyping up a big showcase event featuring comedian, actor, and voice of Gizmo in Gremlins, Howie Mandel.

    Screenshot: AARP / Kotaku

“3D Holograms allow you to beam there, when you can’t be there,” says the AARP on its CES 2024 website. “Come see how this next-generation Spatial Computing platform is transforming communication, combating loneliness and revolutionizing telehealth for older adults.”

From what I can tell, this Mario experience isn’t being advertised or promoted by AARP or Proto. But I don’t think that’s because this is being done without Nintendo’s approval. There is no way in hell these companies and groups would go rogue at CES 2024 and feature Mario at a large booth. Instead, this is likely a way to get people at CES 2024 to walk over to the AARP booth and pay attention to it. Or maybe AARP thinks your elderly grandma would get a kick out of chatting with Mario?

    Kotaku has contacted AARP.

In a recent post from Greggory on Twitter, the user says they are going back to see Mario again and asked folks for some questions. I have one: Ask Mario to sing “Peaches,” record it, and let’s all have a good time watching this bot butcher that song.

  • Final Fantasy XVI Star Shares His Mario Voice And It’s Perfect

Final Fantasy XVI Star Shares His Mario Voice And It’s Perfect

Image: Square Enix / Nintendo / Kotaku

Ever since Nintendo announced Charles Martinet will be stepping back from his long-time role as the in-game voice of Mario, fans have been wondering who might be taking over the reigns in the future. Enter Ben Starr, the man behind Final Fantasy XVI’s superb performance for hero Clive Rosfield…and a glutton for internet gags.

The British television actor recently tweeted an unsolicited audition video for the mustachioed plumber. It’s as bone-chillingly epic as you’d expect. Imagine a battle-hardened Clive walking through modern-day Brooklyn committing verbal hate crimes against Italians and you’ve got the gist.

    Take a look:

Starr takes on Mario’s most iconic phrase, “It’s a-mia, Mario,” and repeats it like he’s about to break your kneecaps, with plenty of F-bombs sprinkled in for good measure. Chris Pratt could never. Just for this Clive deserves to make it into the next Super Smash Bros.

In reality, Nintendo’s already tapped someone else to start doing the voice of Mario. The Switch maker confirmed this new, mysterious performer will be in the credits for Super Mario Bros. Wonder when that new platformer launches in October, but won’t confirm the person’s identity ahead of time. And who knows if they will continue in the role for future sequels and party game spin-offs, or if Wario et al will be voiced by the same person—as Martinet did for decades—or get dedicated voice actors.

In the meantime, Martinet has been receiving online tributes for his years of “Wahoos” and “Yippies,” though it’s still not entirely clear if he voluntarily retired or ran into contract negotiation or similar troubles with Nintendo. While Martinet wasn’t the main voice of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie either, he did have an excellent cameo. Hopefully he’ll get to come back for the next one.

  • Adam Brody Recalls Failed Audition For Chris Pratt’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Role

Adam Brody Recalls Failed Audition For Chris Pratt’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Role

    By Zach Seemayer‍, ETOnline.com.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” could have looked a lot different if things had gone another direction when it came to casting.

Recently, Adam Brody sat down for a chat with the “Just for Variety” podcast, and opened up about the time he read for the role of Peter Quill — a.k.a. Star-Lord — in James Gunn’s cosmic adventure installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I wanted that one,” Brody said of the role, which eventually went to Chris Pratt, whom the “O.C.” alum admitted was a “better fit” for the part, ultimately.

“He is bigger, stronger, but tonally, I really dug it,” Brody lamented.

Pratt starred as the space-faring smuggler and thief who stole fans’ hearts when the first film hit theaters in 2014.

He went on to reprise the role in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Avengers: End Game”, “Thor: Love and Thunder”, “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”, and finally “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, which came out earlier this year.

Before Pratt was cast in the role — which he was offered a chance to read for but initially declined — several other actors, apart from Brody, were considered for the smart-talking, handsome, affable space pirate with a heart of gold.

Joel Edgerton, Jack Houston, Eddie Redmayne, Michael Rosenbaum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zachary Levi, Glenn Howerton, Jim Sturgess, John Gallagher Jr. and even Lee Pace — who was later cast as the film’s primary antagonist, Ronan the Accuser — all read for the role.

However, once Gunn and Pratt met face to face, the future was sealed.

Chris Pratt’s Mother’s Day post gets attention for not mentioning ex-wife Anna Faris

Chris Pratt wished his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, a happy Mother’s Day – but came under fire for leaving someone out of his message. Pratt did not mention his ex-wife, Anna Faris, with whom he has a 10-year-old son, Jack. This is not the first time one of Pratt’s Instagram posts has come under scrutiny.

In his post on Sunday, Pratt wished a Happy Mother’s Day “to all of the mothers out there,” saying he was “especially grateful today for Katherine.”

He called Schwarzenegger, the daughter of actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, “a wonderful partner.”

“You’ve provided me such a blessed life. Our two daughters are so lucky to have you and you’re the best step mama to Jack,” he continued, also mentioning his mom, Kathy, and mother-in-law, Maria Shriver. The photo showed Pratt with all three women.

“And to all of the other moms in my life, I’m so grateful for all you do- thank you so much. Hope you feel celebrated today,” he wrote.

The post received more than 2,000 comments – some from people who criticized him for not mentioning Faris, while others shared their own experiences with exes. “My ex husband sent me a very nice message wishing me a happy Mother’s Day. Marriage didn’t work out, but at least he knows I’m a good mom to our child. It’s just appreciation,” one person wrote.

Others defended Pratt, with many saying there was nothing wrong or unusual with the post. “All of those people making comments about Chris’s ex wife, she never made a father’s day post about him after they broke up either,” one person commented. “Double standards and making him a villain over nothing. If it’s your ex partner you shouldn’t have to include them in anything unless you see fit. I’d do the same.”

Pratt, 43, and Faris, 46, divorced in 2018 after eight years of marriage. He married Schwarzenegger, 33, in 2019.

Pratt didn’t mention Faris in his Mother’s Day post last year – only Schwarzenegger – which received similar comments about leaving his ex-wife out.

And he came under fire for a similar post in November 2021, when he shared a shot of him and Schwarzenegger on Instagram and praised his wife in the caption. The line that stood out to critics: “She’s given me an amazing life, a gorgeous healthy daughter.” Many read the line as a dig to Faris and his son, Jack, who was born prematurely.

In June 2022, Pratt addressed the backlash he received for that post, saying in an interview with Men’s Health that he didn’t know at first why people were coming after him, but he later cried about it.

Pratt explained the post and aftermath, saying: “And then a bunch of articles came out and said, ‘That’s so cringeworthy. I can’t believe Chris Pratt would thank her for a healthy daughter when his first child was born premature. That’s such a dig at his ex-wife.’ And I’m like, That is f**ked up,” he said. “My son’s gonna read that one day. He’s nine. And it’s etched in digital stone. It really f**king bothered me, dude. I cried about it. I was like, I hate that these blessings in my life are—to the people close to me—a real burden.”

Last month, Pratt opened up about his love for Schwarzenegger on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” sharing that they met at church and saying it was a time in his life when he was “struggling and felt really broken.”

He said he was “sneaking glances” at Schwarzenegger while he was in the front row at church. “You kind of don’t want to be like, ‘Whoa, who is that?’ at church, you know what I mean,” he said. “But I was kind of sneaking some glances and I was like, ‘Who is that? Any way, what am I doing? Come on, I’m broken, help me.’” He said they didn’t start dating right after they met.

“God has a fast-forward button,” he said. “When it’s right, boom. You fall in love, you get married. Now we have two beautiful daughters to add to my family.”

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Jack Black Made An Incredible Love Letter To Gaming

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Jack Black Made An Incredible Love Letter To Gaming

You probably know Jack Black from his long career as the enthusiastic star of films like School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda, and most recently as the actor who was the perfect amount of excited to voice Bowser for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Chris Pratt convinced me that he’s never touched a controller in his life, Black wants you to know that he is a hardcore gamer like the rest of you, something he’s made many delightful YouTube videos about in the past on his channel JablinskiGames. Now he and Kyle Gass, who together are better known as the rock duo Tenacious D, have created a musical tribute to games in their signature style, complete with a video in which a cartoon version of Black cameos in games such as God of War, Fallout 4, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, Sonic, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Tenacious D – Video Games (Official Video)

This is good, actually. Black starts off singing that “I don’t play video games no more, I never play video games.” As the video goes on, it becomes clear that his cartoon persona is as plugged in as the rest of us. He makes exceptions for AAA and Nintendo games that he considers to be “experiences,” all while reiterating over and over that he doesn’t have time for gaming. At one point, he appears naked while riding the most fucked-up-looking horse I’ve ever seen. True to the experience of gaming, the animations are filled with gratuitous violence, but with a comedic tone.

Over and over, he stresses: “That’s not a game. That’s an adult thang.” His song addresses how gaming is stigmatized by people who didn’t grow up with a console, but it’s not woe-is-me about it. Black is so excited to share what he loves about his favorite games, and you should be too.

The music was produced by Tenacious D, which, if you’re unaware, is a comedy rock duo formed by Black and Kyle Gass, another actor who also appears in the video (only to die incredibly frequently). Tenacious D has a sizable cult following, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie has reminded mainstream audiences that Black can really sing. His performance of the love ballad “Peaches” blew up the internet, and is eligible for an Oscar nomination.

Of course, the other reason that Black is enjoying so much popularity right now is because he doesn’t act like engaging with video game media is beneath him. Or that he’s paid for his time. When he has to put in a public appearance for the Mario Bros. movie, he goes above and beyond to dress like he voices Bowser. Even his “Video Games” video stands as a work of art on its own rather than a cynical marketing ploy to capture the gaming fan base. I hope Nintendo brings him back for whatever the next Nintendo movie is going to be. They’d be making a huge mistake if they didn’t—Black’s charisma and goodwill extends beyond the movie screen.

  • Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’s Final Needle Drop Had Its Songwriter In Tears, Too

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’s Final Needle Drop Had Its Songwriter In Tears, Too

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 punctuated the ending to arguably one of Marvel’s best trilogy films (don’t @ me) with an emotionally gratifying final needle drop that had its titular characters, the fans, and even the musician behind the song ugly-crying with happiness. Minor spoilers ahead.

On Monday, Florence Welch, the lead singer of the popular indie rock band Florence and the Machine, uploaded a TikTok video of herself reacting to her song “Dog Days Are Over”, which served as the final song in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If you’ve already seen the film, which came out over the weekend, listening to the song likely had you grinning with glee through tear-filled eyes just like Welch, because it served as a spectacular send-off to the comic book heroes’ nine-year cinematic journey.

“So I cried all the way through this movie but when The Guardians of the Galaxy started dancing to ‘Dog Days’ I really lost it,” Welch wrote in her TikTok caption. “Thank you so much for all the love for this moment. The superhero-obsessed little girl in me can’t believe it happened.”

Every Guardians movie has its perfect song

Each of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films packs an emotional gut-punch with its poignant plotlines and an undeniably feel-good bop in its Awesome Mixes. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, we saw how Star-Lord’s relationship with his late mother affected his devil-may-care outlook on the universe and his place in it. In Vol. 2, we got to see how Star-Lord’s estranged relationship with his all-powerful father Ego didn’t define the man he could become. The first two movies accentuated key emotional beats with The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son,” respectively.

In Guardians 3, the camera took its focus off of Star-Lord and instead sheds some much-needed light on the trash-talking Rocket Raccoon, revealing how he came to be the standoffish anti-hero he is today. We’ll spare you any spoilers, but be warned, the two-hour and 30-minute movie does depict gruesome scenes of violence against animals while revealing Rocket’s harrowing backstory. But if you can get past that, the happiness emanating from Guardians 3’s finale will hit you like a train on a track, as Welch’s song puts it.

Guardians 3 outsold the Mario movie in its opening weekend

In non-crying-related news, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has rocketed past Nintendo and Illumination Studios’ Super Mario Bros. Movie’s opening weekend haul with a total of $282 million at the box office. For those keeping track, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, also starring actor Chris Pratt, made a total of $137 million during its three-day domestic opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

The dog days are over for Pratt as well, because after securing the Nintendo and Marvel bag, he’s coming for the Sony bag next year when he offers his voice to the sardonic orange cat, Garfield.

  • ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Conquers Box Office, Negative Raccoon Sentiment

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Conquers Box Office, Negative Raccoon Sentiment

In a twist, a big-budget superhero sequel full of major stars absolutely dominated the box office this weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the final installment of the James Gunn-directed Marvel trilogy starring Chris Pratt, is on track for a $116 million box office return in the US for its opening weekend, and $266 million worldwide.

Guardians unseated the movie that has topped the box office for the past five weeks, The Super Mario Bros movie, which has pulled in roughly $500 million domestically to date. The star of that movie must be mad, right? Oh, wait.

It would appear that Chris Pratt has, to use scientific terminology, played himself.

Yes, Pratt also voices the titular super plumber in Mario in addition to leading Guardians as Peter Quill, the self-styled Starlord, meaning he has the top two slots in the box office all to his sweet, sweet self this week. Stick that in your physics-defying, comically large sewer pipe and smoke it, right? (We don’t talk enough about the fact that everyone in Super Mario travels via sewage pipe. You know what else travels via sewage pipe? Sewage. It makes you want to shower just thinking about it.)

Fans have embraced the film with a 95 percent positive fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics had a few notes. Judging by fan reactions, however, the movie has had one very surprising effect: A dramatic rise in pro-raccoon sentiment.

Fear not, we won’t be dropping any spoilers here, but it would seem that people are having some real feelings about Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), the gun-slinging cybernetic talking raccoon who has seemed to be in an ongoing identity crisis since his first appearance in the Marvel universe. He’s always mad, but he also loves his tree friend Groot. He’s a complicated little dude, and fan reaction tweets like this one are signaling something big for the lil guy.

And then we’ve got Cooper himself telling ABC that ”Rocket went through a lot.” For the first time, we’re feeling a little worried about the welfare of a raccoon.

Given raccoons’ famously poor PR personas, could this mark not only a massive box office, but a sea change for trash pandas? Only time will tell.

  • ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Jumps Into the Billion Dollar Club

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Jumps Into the Billion Dollar Club

They always said that plumbing was a reliable trade.

A new movie character is crossing the threshold and joining the billion dollar club, and he says, “It’s a-me, Mario!” Universal Pictures’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, produced in conjunction with animation studio Illumination and video game stalwarts Nintendo, will officially raise the flag (or rescue the princess, or gain mushroom power, or whichever Mario-related metaphor you like) sometime this weekend, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Who knows, if you get in the car right now and drive to the local multiplex and buy a ticket, it could be you that puts the mustachioed computer-generated li’l adventurer over the top!

If the line is crossed on Sunday, as anticipated, it will be after just 26 days in release. It will be the 10th animated movie to have accrued this much coin, and the 52nd film to enter this exclusive group.

The most recent title to hit the billion-dollar mark was Avatar: The Way of Water, which is still out there scooping up cash in its net. It grossed over $800,000 domestically last week, its 19th week of release. That’s almost twice as much as Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up made in total over its first three weeks, and Showing Up is a masterpiece. Yes, yes, apples and oranges, but sometimes the differentials are extraordinary.

Since we’re snooping around the billionaires club, let’s see what else we can learn. According to Rotten Tomatoes’ binary metric, the most popular film with critics in this elite circle is actually a tie between Toy Story 3 and Zootopia, which both have a 98 percent approval rating. Toy Story 4 is right on its heels for the bronze medal at 97 percent. Tom Cruise, Daniel Radcliffe, and Chadwick Boseman represent the highest-rated non-animated entries, with Top Gun: Maverick, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two, and Black Panther all tied at 96 percent.

The lowest-rated five titles? Yeah, let’s do that—with all this dough, they can take the heat. Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, a controversial picture, to say the least, has a 51 percent approval rating. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (a movie I kinda liked, actually) has 47 percent, Transformers: Dark of the Moon has 35 percent, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has 33 percent, and Jurassic World: Dominion has 29 percent. The cellar dweller, and deservedly so, is Transformers: Age of Extinction, with an abysmal 17 percent. It is also the only film in history to make a billion dollars and also includes a factually inaccurate statutory rape joke

All the movies in the billionaires club are what we’d call “Hollywood productions” (through some, like Skyfall, are not American) but this cultural hegemony will not last forever. Chinese productions, which have only minimal releases in the United States, are getting very close to the magic number. The Battle of Lake Changjin, an intense war epic boasting three directors, topped out at $909 million. It also would have been the number one movie worldwide in 2021 had it not been for Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film that, coincidentally or maybe not coincidentally, was denied exhibition in China.

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie Achieves Legendary High Score

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Achieves Legendary High Score

This weekend was all about two working-class men: a Jewish carpenter named Jesus, and an Italian plumber named Mario.

In the days that included Good Friday and Easter Sunday, audiences across the globe raced to theaters to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie as if the redemption of their very souls depended upon it. The estimated domestic gross was a staggering $206.4 million over the extended weekend frame, and $377 million globally, as per The Hollywood Reporter. This is a new record for the launch of an animated film, and it seems certain that the final tally will surpass Warcraft‘s $439 million, therefore making it the highest-grossing film based on a video game. Put those initials on the high score!

The movie, based on video games in the Nintendo universe, was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, whose best known prior work is Teen Titans Go!, a comedic kid-friendly property based on DC Comics characters. The screenplay is credited to Matthew Fogel, who wrote Minions: Rise of Gru, has a shared story by credit on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, and wrote the 2011 Martin Lawrence vehicle Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.

The voice cast in the animated adventure includes Chris Pratt as the plucky plumber/adventurer Mario, Charlie Day as his brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as the villainous Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. (No one apparently voices you sighing, “oh, come on!!!” as you once again fail to pass the gauntlet of swinging fireball propellors, necessitating a return to the beginning of the board.)

As Deadline noted, the film’s tremendous take now places it as the number one domestic earner for a Wednesday through Sunday (beating Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) For just the three-day Easter weekend, it now ranks third domestically with $146 million, behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $181 million and Furious 7’s $161 million. All told, it’s a lotta coins for Universal, animation shingle Illumination, Nintendo, and 70-year-old Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who is credited as one of the film’s producers.

Enthusiasm at the multiplex spread around this weekend, with a good showing for the Ben Affleck and Matt Damon project Air. While the movie is also centered on a beloved 1980s product, the Nike Air Jordan sneaker, this defiantly “for grown-ups” movie scored nicely with $20 million, a win for Amazon Studios and their first project to get an exclusive theatrical release. This is also the first movie out of the gate from the Bostonian pals’s new company Artists Equity. Warner Bros. is handling its international release, which brought in an additional $10.5 million, totaling $30.7, as per THR. Though these numbers are not Michael Jordan-sized, Deadline calls it “a great start” that also “provides a lot of hope for other distributors with similar fare.”

While Air was something of a swish with critics (a 92 percent at the up-or-down Rotten Tomatoes, and a score of 75 at the more nuanced Metacritic), one can not say the same for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with its 56 percent and 47. Cinemascore, which polls exiting ticket buyers after the movie lets out, awarded an A to both pictures.

  • 14 Of The Best And Most Obscure Secrets We Spotted In The Super Mario Bros. Movie

14 Of The Best And Most Obscure Secrets We Spotted In The Super Mario Bros. Movie

    Photo: Illumination

I watched The Super Mario Bros Movie during its opening week with the intent of writing this Easter eggs and references article, only to realize that the movie is nothing but Easter Eggs and references. A thorough roundup would be indistinguishable from a wholesale rundown of the entire movie.

The plot for The Super Mario Bros Movie is paper-thin. Narratively, the characters are static bordering on inert; there’s no arc or growth to any of them. It’s just one action set piece to the next; your enjoyment is intimately tied to your pre-existing knowledge of these characters and your ability to recognize a parade of homages to Nintendo history.

It is, in other words, narratively identical to a Mario 2D platformer. Critics are complaining about the lack of characterization and depth in the Mario movie. But to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, there is no “there” there. We needn’t be so harsh.

Unlike HBO’s The Last of Us, which took its game’s cinematic aspirations to their logical conclusion, the Mario franchise’s brilliance has never been the Plot; it’s been the gameplay. It’s been that perfect blend of inventive, instructive level design and hairpin controls.

Take that away, and we’re left with a reel of Easter eggs, which is exactly how this movie was intended. Here are 20 of the best ones that we spotted. Which one was your favorite?
