  • What to Stream: ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ Tracy Morgan, Kim Kardashian and ‘Downton Abbey’

    [ad_1]

The earnest superhero team-up tale “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and Tracy Morgan returning to TV with a new comedy called “Crutch” are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time this week, as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: The upstairs-downstairs drama “Downton Abbey” bids farewell in a final movie, Kim Kardashian plays a divorce attorney in Hulu’s “All’s Fair” and Willie Nelson continues to demonstrate his prolific output with the release of yet another new album this year.

New movies to stream from Nov. 3-9

    — Guillermo del Toro realizes his long-held dream of a sumptuous Mary Shelley adaptation in “Frankenstein” (Friday Nov. 7 on Netflix). Del Toro’s film, starring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his monster, uses all the trappings of handmade movie craft to give Shelley’s classic an epic sweep. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr wrote: “Everything about ‘Frankenstein’ is larger than life, from the runtime to the emotions on display.”

    — Matt Shakman’s endearingly earnest superhero team-up tale “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (Wednesday on Disney+) helps alleviate a checkered-at-best history of big-screen adaptations of the classic Stan Lee-Jack Kirby comic. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn play Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Thing and the Human Torch, respectively. In 1964, they work to defend Earth from its imminent destruction by Galactus. In my review, I praised “First Steps” as “a spiffy ’60s-era romp, bathed in retrofuturism and bygone American optimism.”

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” (Friday, Nov. 7 on Peacock) bids goodbye to the Crawleys 15 years after Julian Fellowes first debuted his upstairs-downstairs drama. The cast of the third and final film, directed by Simon Curtis, includes Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Paul Giamatti. In her review, AP’s Jocelyn Noveck wrote that the film gives “loyal Downton fans what they want: a satisfying bit of closure and the sense that the future, though a bit scary, may look kindly on Downton Abbey.” Peacock is also streaming the two previous movies and all six seasons of “Downton Abbey.”

“The Materialists” (Friday, Nov. 7 on HBO Max), Celine Song’s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated 2023 breakthrough “Past Lives,” stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans in a romantic triangle. The New York-set film adds a dose of economic reality to a romantic comedy plot in what was, for A24, a modest summer hit. In her review, AP’s Jocelyn Noveck called it “a smart rom-com that tries to be honest about life and still leaves us smiling.”

    AP Film Writer Jake Coyle

New music to stream from Nov. 3-9

    — The legendary Willie Nelson continues to demonstrate his prolific output with the release of yet another new album this year. “Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle,” out Friday, Nov. 7, is exactly what it sounds like: Nelson offering new interpretations of 11 classic songs written by Merle Haggard. And we mean classics: Check out Nelson’s latest take on “Okie From Muskogee,” “Mama Tried,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here And Drink” and more.

    — Where’s the future of the global music industry? All over, surely, but it would be more than just a little wise to look to Brazil. Not too dissimilar to how Anitta brought her country’s funk genre to an international mainstream through diverse collaborations and genre meddling, so too is Ludmilla. On Thursday, she will release a new album, “Fragmentos,” fresh off the heels of her sultry, bilingual collaboration with Grammy winner Victoria Monét, “Cam Girl.” It’s a combination of R&B, funk and then some.

New series to stream from Nov. 3-9

    — Tracy Morgan returns to TV with a new comedy called “Crutch.” Morgan plays a widowed empty-nester whose world is turned around when his adult children move home with his grandkids in tow. The Paramount+ series debuts Monday.

Kim Kardashian says she will soon learn whether she passed the bar exam to become a lawyer, but she plays a sought-after divorce attorney in “All’s Fair,” her new TV series for Hulu. Kardashian stars alongside Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts, Naomi Watts and Teyana Taylor in the show about an all-female law firm. Ryan Murphy created the show with Kardashian in mind after she acted in “American Horror Story: Delicate.” It premieres Tuesday on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

    — The old saying about truth being stranger than fiction applies to Netflix’s new four-episode limited-series “Death by Lightning.” It’s a historical dramatization (with some comedy thrown in) about how James Garfield became the 20th president of the United States. He was shot four months later by a man named Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen), who was desperate for Garfield’s attention. Two months after that, Garfield died from complications of his injuries. It’s a wild story that also features Betty Gilpin, Nick Offerman, Bradley Whitford and Shea Whigham. The series premieres Thursday.

    — HBO offers up a new docuseries about the life of retired baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez. “Alex Vs. A-Rod” features intimate interviews with people who are related to and know Rodriguez, as well as the man himself. The three-part series premieres Thursday.

    — The next installment of “Wicked,” called “Wicked: For Good,” flies into theaters Nov. 21 and NBC has created a musical special to pump up the release. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande lead “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” a concert event that premieres Thursday on NBC and streams on Peacock Friday, Nov. 7. Additional film cast members like Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater appear as well.

    Alicia Rancilio

New video games to play from Nov. 3-9

    — It’s going to be a while until the next Legend of Zelda game, but if you’re craving some time with the princess, check out Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. In this spinoff, a prequel to 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda travels back in time to join forces with the Six Sages in a war against the invader Ganondorf. You can also drag another human into battle with split-screen or the GameShare feature on Nintendo’s new console. Like the previous collaborations between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo, it’s more hack-and-slash action than exploration and discovery. It arrives Thursday on Switch 2.

  • TMZ under fire (again) for Chris Evans & Alba Baptista reporting | The Mary Sue

    [ad_1]

The world of celebrity news is an interesting beast. Supermarket tabloids spouting weekly rumors have given way to a whole new culture online, with anonymous Instagram accounts and massive websites reporting on things as quickly as they possibly can.

Not only has that changed the way that a lot of us engage with our favorite famous people, but it has also led to a lot more overstepped boundaries… and once again, it appears that TMZ is at the scene of the crime.

This week, the outlet is under fire for their reporting on actors Chris Evans and Alba Baptista welcoming their first child. While TMZ reporting birth announcements before they are even remotely picked up by mainstream press isn’t anything new, the way they chose to broke the news is. Their article initially included a watermarked photo of the baby’s birth certificate, with only a handful of details redacted. This was quickly met with backlash from fans, and although the photo has since been removed from the article, copies of it are still circulating around on social media.

It’s unclear whether or not this could lead to a lawsuit over invasion of privacy, but either way, the damage has already been done. It was arguably already bad enough that Evans and Baptista, who have been notoriously private in their relationship since they began dating in 2022, did not have control of when and how their baby’s birth would be made public. But the “leak” of the birth certificate honestly goes beyond that, sharing personal information about the couple and their baby that very few in the public sphere (but especially people casually engaging on stan Twitter and fandom spaces) needed to know.

    Another controversy for TMZ…

In a way, this shouldn’t be shocking for TMZ. For the better part of the 21st century, the outlet has built a brand out of brash “journalism”, whether in the articles on their website or on their syndicated television show. I will admit, I did spend a stretch of the 2000s watching episodes of TMZ, because it seemed like the most high-speed and “edgy” way to catch up on Hollywood gossip prior to all of us using social media.

But in recent years, the tide has shifted towards criticizing the outlet, for its attitude towards certain subject matters, and for its methods of going to practically any means necessary to get information or photos for a story. Sometimes, this has just meant paparazzi accosting subjects in public in an attempt to get the next viral clip. But other times, this has led to clear boundaries being crossed.

The way TMZ has reported on, or was otherwise involved with, the legal case between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, as well as the deaths of Kobe Bryant and Liam Payne have all drawn massive amounts of backlash in recent years. There have also been the instances of the outlet reporting incorrect news before it could be verified, whether about celebrity deaths or about Beyonce maybe appearing at last year’s Democratic National Convention.

Again, with all of this in mind, TMZ’s “leak” of Evans and Baptista’s baby’s birth certificate shouldn’t be surprising… but it’s still disappointing.

  • ‘Sacrifice’ Review: Romain Gavras’ Entertaining Eco-Satire Has A Surprisingly Emotional Impact – Toronto Film Festival

    [ad_1]

For a book that not many people know about or have read, James George Frazer’s The Golden Bough (1890) has had quite an impact on cult cinema, particularly in the ’70s. For reasons that would take too long to go into here — and thanks to its influence on Joseph Campbell’s 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces — it turns out that Frazer’s non-fiction investigation of religion, mythology, folk tales and the subsequent journey to science has since shaped films as seemingly far afield as The Wicker Man, the very first Star Wars, and Apocalypse Now. Well, you wouldn’t necessarily ever put those three films on a triple bill, but, once you see it, there is a certain overlap, mostly in the concept of the unwitting hero, a man chosen by fate, and not necessarily for the better.

With that in mind, Greek-French director Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, his English-language debut, comes at a very interesting time in the world’s history. Though outwardly a blunt comedy (of sorts), it’s a film that, through its central character, asks questions about seeking out actual heroism within the fog of tokenism.

That character is Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), a Hollywood star recovering from a recent nervous breakdown and attending a garish eco-friendly charity party for the super-super-rich that’s being held in a fantastically austere Greek mine. Tyler, conflicted even about his own attendance, is sceptical about everyone else’s motives and says so, calling out the event’s star guest, environmental billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel), on a live video stream for his hypocritical politics, condemning the mining of fossil fuels yet happy to exploit the sea for energy.

To backtrack, Gavras’ film is an odd fish in that respect, because, despite the comedic veneer, its agenda is actually very real, and that’s how it starts. Before we meet Tyler, we see Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) overseeing the fiery funeral of her own mother (who, worryingly, might not actually be dead yet). Joan is the leader of what looks like a teenage militia from The Village of the Damned (1960 or 1995, take your pick), and she’s on a mission. “The old way must burn to ash,” she says, under orders from a nearby volcano. Which is what guides her, and her two siblings, to storm the event and take its guests hostage — while Tyler is in the bathroom, licking his wounds after his mic drop moment goes horribly viral.

The gala itself is a cringeworthy as you might expect, the imminent climate catastrophe spelled out to the private jet-ferried audience through — what else? — the medium of an interpretative dance battle and a neon sign saying “MAKE EARTH COOL AGAIN”. In fact, it’s so cheesy that it takes a while for the guests to realize that Joan and her army aren’t part of the entertainment too; it’s only when the blood starts to flow that they realize she’s serious. At which point Tyler re-enters the room and is given up by the terrified crowd (and, more importantly, anointed by Joan) as one of three people — including Bracken and one of the show’s dancers — who must make the film’s titular sacrifice to save the world from an imminent catastrophe.

As a hostage, Tyler gets Stockholm Syndrome early on, taking all this to be student hijinks (“No justice, no peace,” he roars to the media), much to the annoyance of Bracken, who accuses him of promoting what he calls “Green Isis”. The ratio of laughs to drama changes quite sharply, however, as Joan takes her hostages off on their journey, leading to a bond with Tyler and a lot of unexpected revelations about Joan’s background.

You might think you know where all this is going, and the script does cover a lot of those bases, most of them involving movie stars’ egos and their power and privilege in the real world. But Sacrifice is interesting, not just because it takes risks even within its own sui generis genre (note to self: is sci-fi folk horror a thing yet?) but because it’s actually quite clear in its thinking: What constitutes is a sacrifice in today’s world?

As Tyler, Evans holds the film surprisingly well, given the twists and turns (in story as well as tone) that await him, and the poker-faced Taylor-Joy, never more serious (and quite convincingly playing way younger than she actually is), is a great foil to that. To make things even more entertaining, John Malkovich pops up as what seems, briefly, to be the voice of reason.

In short, it’s nuts, and not for everyone. But Sacrifice does have a message, and it’s about the ouroboros — the perpetual self-eating snake — that is the world’s performative reaction to climate change. It goes further than where you might not think it will, and the emotional payoff from that may well outlast the jokes.

  • Reviews For The Easily Distracted: Honey Don’t!

    [ad_1]

    Title: Honey Don’t!

Describe This Movie Using One Simpsons Quote:

HOMER: This lesbian bar doesn’t have a fire exit! Enjoy your death trap, ladies.
    WOMAN: What was her problem?

Brief Plot Synopsis: Bakersfield has a surprisingly high murder rate.

Rating Using Random Objects Relevant To The Film: 3 rosary beads out of 5.

Tagline: “She only has two desires, and one of them is justice.”

Better Tagline: “The other? Proper adult toy hygiene.”

Not So Brief Plot Synopsis: Bakersfield, CA private detective Honey O’Donahue (Margaret Qualley) has no reason to suspect foul play when a potential client dies in a seemingly innocuous traffic accident, but the more she digs, the more reasons for suspicion she finds. What was the deceased’s relationship to the charismatic Reverend Devlin (Chris Evans)? Will her nosing around threaten her budding relationship with BPD officer MG Falcone (Aubrey Plaza)? And does anyone in town know what’s up with that French chick on the moped?
“Critical” Analysis: Honey Don’t! is the second solo directorial feature for Ethan Coen, following Drive Away Dolls (also starring Qualley), and the middle entry in what he and co-writer Tricia Cooke envision as a trilogy of “lesbian B-movies.” Their first entry had more of an absurdist caper sensibility to it, but both movies aren’t kidding around with the lesbian part.

Honey, it must be said, is a much cooler customer than Dolls’ Jamie, and Coen and Qualley continue to demonstrate quite the rapport. She glides through HD!’s occasionally uneven storyline with an aplomb at odds with the, frankly, Coen-esque supporting characters around her and the washed out environs of Bakersfield.

Ethan Coen and brother Joel, after all, are no stranger to noir (Blood Simple, Miller’s Crossing, The Man Who Wasn’t There). They just refuse to set them in the expected Gotham surroundings. Honey Don’t! is no different, with the blinding sun and exaggerated(?) grime of California’s Central Valley serving as backdrop for the unsavory shenanigans.

And it has an unreal and almost anachronistic quality to it. Yes, people carry smartphones, and yes, the niece’s asshole boyfriend has a MAGA sticker on his truck, but Qualley — despite her character being from Bakersfield — is like an alien walking about humans in stilettos and high-waisted slacks. Honey is what you’d get if Raymond Chandler wrote Philip Marlow as a “dame.” And hornier.

What’s most interesting (and probably irritating to some) is how seemingly major plotlines are teased but ultimately dumped as unceremoniously as I usually was in high school. We know Devlin is mixed up with some French heavies, for example, but just when you think you see where it’s going, Coen and Cooke pull le tapis right out from under you.

Speaking of that, it’s hard to believe Qualley and Plaza have never been in a movie together before. The latter tends to get shoehorned into roles that focus on her inscrutable expression and natural sarcasm. Falcone lets Plaza expand that palette a bit, and she provides an intriguing complement to Qualley’s deadpan demeanor.

And as much as you may not want to hand it to a guy who looks like Chris Evans, he’s shown a great knack for playing scumbags (Knives Out, Red One, Pain Hustlers). Reverend Devlin continues that trend, further proving Evans’ ability to pivot from America’s Ass to simply an American ass.

I did like Honey Don’t!, just not as much as I wanted to. Qualley is a force, but the end result of Honey and MG’s relationship comes out of nowhere, and Devlin makes for an unworthy adversary. Charlie Day’s doofus homicide detective is a bright spot, and Coen and Cooke don’t shy away from sex or gore. I just wish it stuck the landing better.

Honey Don’t! is in theaters today.

  • Chris Evans on Why He Declined Ryan Reynolds’ Cue Cards for His Surprise Monologue in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Chris Evans on Why He Declined Ryan Reynolds’ Cue Cards for His Surprise Monologue in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

    [ad_1]

[This story contained spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.]

When Ryan Reynolds offered Chris Evans the opportunity to make a surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, he jumped at the chance.

The actor recently opened up to People magazine about getting to reprise his Fantastic Four character Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the record-making Marvel movie, currently playing in theaters.

“It was a couple years ago and I got a text from Ryan, we’re buddies,” Evans recalled. “He just said, ‘Listen, if you don’t like this idea, no worries whatsoever. But I have something that could really bring the house down and would let you play a character from your past.’”

The Ghosted star continued, “I mean, honestly, I would do anything Ryan asked. He gave me a great cameo in Free Guy already, and I just trust him completely. So the chance to be Johnny again, I couldn’t pass up. I loved it. It was fun to shoot, fun to watch, all of it.”

Though Evans is more recognized for his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his latest appearance as Johnny Storm came nearly two decades after he first debuted the superhero in 2005’s Fantastic Four. He also starred in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

The Avengers actor also scored a second appearance in the Shawn Levy-directed movie after the credits, which saw Evans giving an expletive-filled monologue. Ahead of filming the Deadpool & Wolverine scene, he said Reynolds actually offered him some additional help, but he declined.

“Ryan was like, ‘Listen, if we need cue cards…’ and I was like, ‘Cue cards? I’m showing up off-book,’” Evans recounted. “I don’t get to say dialogue like this. Trust me. I’m going to enjoy every second of this. Memorized.”

Earlier this week, Evans took to his Instagram Story to show his appreciation for Levy, Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for “letting me be a part of such an incredible movie.” He added in the post, “Playing Johnny again was a dream come true and he’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

  • Joseph Quinn’s Ready to Blaze His Own Trail as the Newest Human Torch

Joseph Quinn’s Ready to Blaze His Own Trail as the Newest Human Torch

    [ad_1]

Even before its casting was officially unveiled, Marvel Studios’ upcoming Fantastic Four movie was always poised to be a big deal. The First Family of Marvel Comics hasn’t had a movie since Fant4stic nearly a decade ago (despite Fox’s best attempts), and we’re also coming up on 20 years since the studios’ previous go with the 2000s movies. Those two films have an interesting place in the superhero movie canon, particularly since their Johnny Storm was Chris Evans, who went on to become Captain America for nearly a decade.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Joseph Quinn was asked about if any previous version of Johnny colored his approach to the character. While he was a fan of Evans’ portrayal back in the day, he’s chiefly concerned with “making it your own [version].” There’s “big boots to fill,” certainly, but he says discussions with director Matt Shakman made clear that this movie won’t be in conversation with earlier versions like the MCU Spider-Man movies are with their cinematic past. “There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing. […] I’m really looking forward to establishing this familial dynamic with [my costars] and with Matt Shakman’s guidance.”

From the stars to Shakman and writers Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer, and Eric Pearson, everyone involved wants to “get [Fantastic Four] right,” continued Quinn. According to him, this new movie will feel different from earlier Marvel movies in ways he clearly can’t explain. But he was hopeful that the end result will be a movie that both does right by the Four and also converts anyone who’s had understandable burnout on superhero movies in the last few years.

In regards to fatigue, Quinn noted that superhero movies have to put the people before the punches and bombast, nothing it’s why people see these in the first place. That’s something Fantastic Four is aiming to deliver on, and something that sounds like the core ethos of the entire film: “We’re not just in a penny, “ he said, “we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”

The Fantastic Four comes to theaters on July 25, 2025, but Quinn can be seen next in A Quiet Place: Day One on June 7.

  • Little Shop of Horrors’ Reboot May Finally Sprout to Life

Little Shop of Horrors’ Reboot May Finally Sprout to Life

    [ad_1]

    Image: Warner Bros.

Hollywood’s been trying for years now to revive Little Shop of Horrors for a new cinematic audience. Last we heard, Arrowverse head Greg Berlanti was going to try his hand at it with Billy Porter and maybe Chris Evans. That version ultimately got scrapped in 2022, but Hollywood’s angling to try and grow a new version of the beloved film yet again.

As reported by Deadline, the horror-comedy film is being rebooted, with Gremlins director Joe Dante at the helm and Roger Corman (who directed the original 1960 film) on hand as a co-producer. The twist? It’s a reimagining dubbed Little Shop of Halloween Horrors that’s also being intended as the kickstart to a new movie franchise. Dante will be working off a script written by Charles S. Haas (Gremlins 2).

The original Little Shop of Horrors, and its more popular 1986 musical, centered on a florist named Seymour who discovers a Venus flytrap-looking plant he eventually names Audrey Jr. (or Audrey II in the musical). The plant manages to convince Seymour to keep feeding it people, and things quickly spiral out of control from there. At time of writing, it sounds like that’ll still be the general premise of this new movie, give or take some Halloween-specific plot elements. What’s not clear is if it’ll play as a straight horror-comedy like the original or do like the 1986 movie and take the musical route.

Until the new version comes out, you can watch the previous Little Shop of Horrors movies on services like Prime Video. And if you’ve got Max, you can watch the “Little Rock of Horrors” episode of Billy & Mandy. It’s short, but it’s still pretty great!

  • Chris Evans’s Tattoos Are Hidden but Meaningful – POPSUGAR Australia

Chris Evans’s Tattoos Are Hidden but Meaningful – POPSUGAR Australia

    [ad_1]

Think Captain America is as tattoo-free in real life as he appears in the movies? Think again. In October 2020, fans were shocked when “Avengers” star Chris Evans posted an Instagram Story of himself backflipping into a pool, exposing his tattoo-covered torso, but the actor has secretly been hiding away several pieces of ink since the beginning of his career.

Chris Evans’s tattoos have been a hot topic since, but the actor has often spoken about his pieces of body art in interviews. During a June 2014 interview with Hot Hits Live From LA, Evans said: “I’m all for tattoos, but just somewhere they can be hidden.” While most of his ink is covered up by the iconic Captain America suit in all of his Marvel films, some of Evans’s real tattoos have made cinematic debuts in other movies such as “Puncture” and “Cellular.”

After the Instagram Story frenzy, the news of Chris Evans’s tattoos slowly faded but later reignited in March of 2021 when Evans and his brother did a virtual interview with Ace Universe. Fans noticed that Evans had multiple designs peeking out from under his white tank top. Afterward, many people tweeted that the interview was a perfect reminder that not only does the actor have tattoos, but specifically multiple chest tattoos.

Though they’re often covered by makeup or hidden beneath clothes, here’s everything we know about the actor’s not-so-secret collection of body art. (Yes, details about Chris Evans’s chest tattoo lie ahead).

  • 10 Reasons to watch Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off today

10 Reasons to watch Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off today

    [ad_1]

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the animated adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s iconic graphic novel series, has taken fans on a surprising and refreshing journey. While some viewers may find the departure from the original storyline disconcerting, there are several aspects of the anime that make it a standout and enjoyable experience. Here are 10 highlights that set Scott Pilgrim Takes Off apart.

    Episode 1 Twist

The anime’s first episode presents a faithful adaptation of the early comic and movie plotline, only to deliver a shocking twist. Scott’s defeat by Matthew Patel becomes a turning point, revealing that the series isn’t just a retelling but a sequel, offering a fresh take on the familiar narrative beats.

    The Original Voice actors

The return of the original movie cast, including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, and more, adds a nostalgic touch to the series. Despite initial reservations about Hollywood stars in voiceover roles, the cast seamlessly slips back into their characters, delivering solid performances with a blend of anime-inspired enthusiasm and naturalism.

    Ramona’s Character Arc

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off takes a bold approach by shifting the focus to Ramona Flowers. The series explores her character more deeply, delving into her past and relationships with both Scott and the League of Evil Exes. This perspective adds layers to her character, making her more than just the object of affection.

League of Evil Exes takes center stage

The decision to give more screen time to the League of Evil Exes is a welcome addition. Viewers get a chance to explore their individual histories and relationships, especially with characters like Matthew, Gideon, Lucas, and Todd. This expansion enhances the depth and complexity of the series.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off [Image Credit- Netflix]

    Queer Representation

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off embraces a queer narrative, providing more nuanced and fleshed-out portrayals of characters like Roxie and Wallace. The expanded exploration of Wallace’s character and his Hollywood fling with Todd on the set of Young Neil’s Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life adds a delightful and inclusive layer to the story.

    Stays true to the Comics

The anime successfully captures Bryan Lee O’Malley’s distinctive artwork, creating a visually stunning show. Science Saru’s animation studio brings the characters to life with bold lines, expressive eyes, and clever camera touches that pay homage to both the original comics and the live-action movie.

    A Different Trajectory

Rather than a straightforward adaptation, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off takes a different trajectory, becoming more of a remix than a reboot. This shift turns the series into a rollicking ensemble piece, allowing secondary characters like Wallace to shine and adding a fresh dynamic to the narrative.

    Meaningful Fight Scenes

While fight scenes are a staple of the Scott Pilgrim universe, they serve a deeper purpose in the anime. The battles become manifestations of unresolved issues and personal accounts that need to be settled, adding a cathartic element to the action.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off [Image Credit- Netflix]

    Blending original storyline

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off manages to coexist cleverly with both the original graphic novels and Edgar Wright’s movie. The series includes ingenious breadcrumbs that guide first-time viewers back to the source material, creating a unique viewing experience for both newcomers and longtime fans.

    The Soundtrack

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off continues the tradition of a killer soundtrack, featuring a fantastic collaboration between composer Joseph Trapanese and chiptune group Anamanaguchi. The music, a mix of original compositions, and Anamanaguchi’s signature video game-inspired vibes complement the series’ energetic and stylized atmosphere.

  • Chris Evans says he’s ‘enjoying life’ as a newlywed after marrying Alba Baptista | CNN

Chris Evans says he’s ‘enjoying life’ as a newlywed after marrying Alba Baptista | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Chris Evans has traded in his Captain America shield for a more sentimental accessory.

The Marvel actor was sporting a wedding band on Saturday during an appearance at New York Comic-Con (NYCC), where he publicly confirmed for the first time that he recently wed actress Alba Baptista.

“I got married,” the Marvel star told the audience, adding that his recent nuptials were “really, really great.”

He shared that he and Baptista had two ceremonies – one in Portugal, where Baptista is from, and another ceremony on the East Coast, which reportedly took place last month in Cape Cod.

“They were wonderful and beautiful,” he said of the dual ceremonies, later adding that since then, he and Baptista have “been relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting” as newlyweds.

Evan admitted that he felt the weight of planning a wedding, joking, “It’s a lot.”

“For those of you who are married, it takes a lot out of you but now that we’re through that, we’ve kind of just been enjoying life,” he said.

Evans and Baptista have been romantically linked since 2021.

The actor’s appearance at NYCC comes just days after contract negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the major studios and streamers were suspended amid the ongoing strike. The union supporting actors and performers has been on strike since July.

Hollywood writers in the Writers Guild of America, who had been on strike since May, agreed upon a new contract with the studios and streamers in September. The new contract was ratified last week, putting thousands of people back to work.

  • Chris Evans Finally Admits He’s Off The Market

Chris Evans Finally Admits He’s Off The Market

    [ad_1]

In news that shouldn’t actually surprise anyone, Marvel-famous actor Chris Evans announced that he married Alba Baptista in September, over a month after multiple outlets — citing anonymous sources — reported on the nuptials

The 42-year-old Massachusetts resident, who was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2022, reportedly met the 26-year-old Portuguese Warrior Nun star in 2021, and the pair appeared to start dating soon after

Evans would occasionally share photos of the couple on his now-deactivated Instagram account. Still, the pair were pretty private about their relationship—but in early September, when his Marvel co-stars were spotted dining together in Boston, the nuptial jig appeared to be up. The stars had assembled to attend their private Cape Cod wedding, People reported at the time, with Evans and Baptista requiring NDAs and confiscating cell phones, a Page Six source said.

The newly-married duo jetted off to Portugal, where they reportedly ran into Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as one does. But neither Baptista nor Evans have officially said, “Oh, yeah, we’re married” until Saturday.

Evans has been working hard to separate himself from his Captain America alter ego, but it appears he still has some funny papers obligations. A so-called guest of honor at this weekend’s New York Comic Con, the “biggest comic and pop culture event on the East Coast,” his schedule was notably grueling, with five scheduled photo ops, two autograph sessions, and “A Spotlight on Chris Evans,” a 30-minute, one-man “panel” where Evans talked about his life, aspirations, and—at long last—his wedding. In fact, his weddings, plural.

“We kinda had two ceremonies,” Evans said, per ET. “We had one on the East Coast. We did one in Portugal. My wife’s Portuguese.”

“It’s a lot, planning a wedding. For those of you who are married, you know it takes a lot out of you,” People quotes him as saying. “Now that we’re through that, we’ve just kinda been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn, my favorite season. It’s, like, the best time of year right now. Now we’re just relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting,” Evans said.

But once the leaves fall and Evans loses interest in hayrides or orchards or whatever else it is people in Massachusetts do to really get into the fall spirit (corn mazes are just a Midwestern thing, right?), the Snowpiercer star plans on turning his eye not to a snowblower—but to the theater.

“I’m looking (for a play),” Deadline quotes Evans as saying. “I’d love to actually try and find something next year, but it’s tough because you find something that you are kind of into that could be cool but like I said, once you’re in it, you are in it.”

A play, Evans said, “usually runs three, four or five months. So, it’s got to be something that you don’t just love, but it’s got to be something that you’re ready to explore from different angles every single night for a very long time.” Well, Chris, that sounds an awful lot like marriage, so given the leap you just took (and the commitment you just got out of), it might make sense to wait.

‘Pain Hustlers’ Trailer: A Real-Life Crime Is Now a Netflix Movie

    [ad_1]

Netflix recently released a trailer for a new crime drama on its way out, called Pain Hustlers, based on a true story from the shady world of pharmaceuticals.

The movie stars the likes of Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, Chloe Coleman, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James, Amit Shah, Aubrey Dollar, Willie Raysor and Andy Garcia. David Yates is in the director’s chair, while Wells Tower penned the screenplay. The story itself is also based on a book by Evan Hughes.

You can watch the full trailer for the film below:

READ MORE: Everything New on Netflix in October

The official synopsis is as follows:

Liza Drake (Emily Blunt) is a blue-collar single mom who has just lost her job and is at the end of her rope. A chance meeting with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner (Chris Evans) puts her on an upwards trajectory economically but dubious path ethically as she becomes entangled in a dangerous racketeering scheme. Dealing with her increasingly unhinged boss (Andy Garcia), the worsening medical condition of her daughter (Chloe Coleman), and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices. Pain Hustlers is a sharp and revealing look at what some people do out of desperation and others do out of greed.

The film premiered last month, and will begin playing in select theaters on October 20. If you want to check it out and it’s not playing anywhere near you, it premieres on Netflix on October 27.

  • Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Met In Portugal

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Met In Portugal

    [ad_1]

Even when you’re a big star, the world can be weirdly small.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly ran into none other than Captain America himself, Chris Evans, as well as his new bride Alba Baptista while the Sussexes took a low-key jaunt to Portugal in late September.

According to Page Six, the couples didn’t know each other before the chance meeting at an eatery abroad, and the unnamed source called the power meeting of the power couples completely coincidental.

Vanity Fair has reached out to representatives for the Sussexes for comment.

While no details are known about the run-in, including if it was a “hey, I know that guy” type nod and wave or a full-on conversation or what, it’s nice for the sake of international relations to think about a budding friendship between Harry and Evans. They’re both sons who have taken a step back from their kingdoms (Harry’s literal, Evans’ with the whole done-ish with the Marvel Cinematic Universe thing). Maybe Markle and Baptista compared notes on the unfairness of being largely referred to as “the wife” by their spouses’ fans, despite having storied careers in their own right.

They certainly could have all traded pointers on keeping things low-key: At Alba and Evans’ wedding last month, guests handed over phones and were required to sign NDAs, and Meghan and Harry’s Portugal trip was so under the radar that their reps haven’t even confirmed that the getaway after the Invictus Games happened at all. Just call them the International (Wo)Men of Mystery. There’s a movie we’d watch.

What We Know About Alba Baptista, Chris Evans’s Reported Wife

    [ad_1]

In a July 2022 Glamour feature, Baptista revealed some of her hobbies in her description of her ideal day. “Any sort of outdoor activity like hiking, bike riding, or rollerblading, and going to the beach with someone I love,” she said. “That’s the best day I can have. Oh, and with a lot of food.” She also has a penchant for philosophy, according to the outlet, and was reading Nietzsche at the time of the interview.

Additionally, in Aug. 2022, she told W Magazine that she makes sure to prioritize enjoying her life outside of work. “I need to recenter and reprioritize my passions outside of acting — hiking, doing yoga, going to the beach,” she said. “It’s not just a preference. It’s a necessity to practice presence and be able to take on another role.”

  • Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Wed in a Ceremony in Cape Cod

Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Wed in a Ceremony in Cape Cod

    [ad_1]

Chris Evans and Alba Baptista are reportedly married! On Sept. 10, People confirmed via a source that the couple wed during a ceremony at a private estate in Cape Cod, MA, on Sept. 9. Representatives for Evans and Baptista did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s requests for comment.

According to People, many of the couple’s famous friends were spotted in Boston for the wedding, including Evans’s Marvel costars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and John Krasinski.

In November 2022, a source confirmed to People that Evans, 42, and Baptista, 26, had been dating for “for over a year” at that point, but speculation about their romance began months before as fans noticed subtle cues that the two were romantically involved.

For instance: some hawk-eyed Instagram users noticed that Baptista followed Evans and several members of his family back in 2021, per Cosmopolitan. However, an innocent Halloween Instagram post from Evans on Oct. 31, 2022, which pictured a pair of carved pumpkins, sent rumors into overdrive when fans realized the set was identical to a photo Baptista used for her Instagram profile picture.

It wasn’t long before the two openly embraced their romance, which Evans seemingly confirmed himself a few months later by sharing a playful video of him and his girlfriend jokingly scaring each other on his Instagram Stories at the top of the new year. “A look back at 2022,” he captioned it. He doubled down on the social media PDA on Feb. 14 when he posted a sweet photo montage of him and Baptista on Instagram in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Previously, Evans has dated a number of famous stars, including Minka Kelly, whom he had a years-long on-and-off relationship with, Jessica Biel, and Jenny Slate. Baptista’s dating history is unknown, but she has starred in a handful of Portuguese films as well as Netflix’s “Warrior Nun,” which marked her English-language debut in 2020.

Chris Evans Marries Alba Baptista In Intimate Cape Cod Wedding

Captain America is a married man.

Guests included the bride and groom’s family, as well as Evans’ “The Avengers” co-stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner, as well as John Krasinski and wife Emily Blunt.

Insiders who spoke to Page Six said the affair was “locked down tight,” with guests signing NDAs and handing over the phones before the nuptials.

Evans and Baptista’s relationship first came to light around November 2022, after People reported the pair had been dating for “over a year.”

“They are in love and Chris has never been happier. His family and friends all adore her,” a source close to the “Gifted” actor told the magazine.

HuffPost has reached out for Evans and Baptista’s reps for comment.

Baptista, who hails from Portugal, starred in the Netflix series “Warrior Nun” from 2020 to 2022.

She earned a Shooting Star Award at the 2021 Berlinale and appeared in the chic, historical comedy “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” last year.

In an interview for his 2022 “Sexiest Man of the Year” honors, Evans told People he was excited to have a family sometime down the line.

“That’s absolutely something I want: wife, kids, building a family,” he said. “When you read about most of the best artists, whether it’s actors, painters, writers, most of them [admit] it wasn’t the work they made [that they are most proud of], it was about the relationships; the families they created, the love they found, the love they shared.”

  • Here’s Our First Look At The Scott Pilgrim Anime

Here’s Our First Look At The Scott Pilgrim Anime

    [ad_1]

On Wednesday, Netflix released a teaser trailer for its upcoming anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, as well as announcing a release date for the hotly anticipated series.

We first caught wind of the anime project last January when it was reported that Bryan Lee O’Malley, writer and creator of the Scott Pilgrim comics, would write and executive produce the series with Are You Afraid of the Dark? showrunner BenDavid Grabinski. But the party didn’t stop there because we also learned that the stars of the 2010 live-action film, like Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Chris Evans, would be reprising their roles in the anime, with Edgar Wright, director of the film, on board as executive producer.

Titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the series (once again) follows the story of its titular character as he battles the seven deadly exes of a delivery girl named Ramona Flowers. Animation studio Science Saru (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Devilman Crybaby) is handling animation duties. You can check out the trailer below.

Read More: Netflix Scott Pilgrim Anime Will Reunite Entire Movie Cast

What else can I say about the trailer other than it looks rad as hell? We’ve got Sex Bob-Omb singing what appears to be a brand new song, breathtaking shots of Ramona Flowers minding her own business while Scott looks on slack-jawed, and—most importantly—video game bleep-bloops and sound effects playing across the screen as Scott battles Flowers’ exes. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off seems poised to hit every exciting cinematic note that the 2010 film did. But what’s most exciting is that it looks like the anime will do something the film didn’t, adapting story arcs and battles Wright’s film omitted.

Based on the trailer, it would appear that Scott’s ex-girlfriend Envy Adams (Brie Larson) will play a more prominent role in the series. We also see snippets of a battle between Scott and Ramona’s ex-girlfriend Roxie Richter in a video store. I wager it’s the same store Kim Pine works at in the comics. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we’ll get to see Lisa Miller (who appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs. The Animation on Adult Swim in 2010) and Knives Chau’s awesome samurai dad, Mr. Chau, pop up in the Netflix anime as well.

Fans aren’t the only ones excited enough to punch a second hole in the moon over Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. In a recent interview with Decider, Cera shared his excitement about reprising his role as Scott while praising O’Malley’s script, saying “Every time I’ve recorded it, I have to send Brian an email saying, ‘I love this so much. I’m so excited about it.’”

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is slated to premiere on the streamer on November 17.

Iron Man’s influence: The Scarlet Witch’s journey to villainy

    [ad_1]

The Scarlet Witch’s transformation into a villain in the MCU’s Phase 4 holds deeper origins than meets the eye, intricately woven by none other than Tony Stark’s Iron Man. As we delve into key moments from the MCU’s past, a captivating narrative unfolds, shedding light on the unforeseen influence that set Wanda Maximoff on her path towards becoming the enigmatic Scarlet Witch.

Stark’s unintended Role: Avengers: Age of Ultron

Back in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda Maximoff, alongside her brother Pietro, introduced a simmering resentment towards the Avengers. Unveiled in “Previously On,” a poignant episode of WandaVision, the Maximoffs’ tragic backstory emerges. Stark’s Stark-branded missile held them captive for days during a war, pushing them into the arms of HYDRA. This choice ultimately unlocked their superhuman abilities through the Mind Stone, with Stark inadvertently triggering the creation of the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda’s imprisonment: From Civil War to WandaVision

Stark’s impact on Wanda continued to unfold in Captain America: Civil War, as he confined her to the Avengers Compound after a tragic incident in Lagos. This seemingly well-intentioned move, meant to control her potentially-dangerous powers, bore striking similarities to events in WandaVision. The series depicted Wanda’s inadvertent control over the town of Westview, mirroring her own confinement by Stark. The parallel between Iron Man’s decisions and Wanda’s actions adds layers to her character’s complex evolution.

    Iron Man’s Dual Role

Tony Stark’s decisions inadvertently laid the groundwork for Wanda Maximoff’s dual transformation into the Scarlet Witch. His past actions, born out of good intentions yet morally questionable, mirrored in her own choices. Stark’s inadvertent role in creating and confining Wanda casts a new light on her journey, underscoring the intricate tapestry that connects these two characters.

As audiences explore the symbiotic relationship between Iron Man and the Scarlet Witch, fans uncover a narrative that adds depth to both characters, enriching the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s intricate storytelling.
