Ronnie O’Sullivan will be going for his eighth world title and first Seniors world title this spring
After a record-equalling seven world titles, Ronnie O’Sullivan will be making his debut on the senior world stage in May at the 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship.
However, the 50-year-old is still expected to play in the main World Championship, which finishes just two days before the seniors starts, with both events taking place at the Crucible.

He joins an impressive seniors line-up that includes 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham, 12-time women’s world champion Reanne Evans and former Masters and UK champion Matthew Stevens.
Chairman Jason Francis branded O’Sullivan the “most commercially valuable player the sport has ever seen” and that he expects The Rocket’s participation to drive ticket sales even higher.
The seniors tournament will take place May 6-10, being prefaced by World Championship from April 18-May 4.
O’Sullivan relocated to Dubai last year but will spend April and May in Sheffield as he also attempts to win an eighth world title when he appears in his 34th consecutive World Snooker Championship.

Changes to the seniors tournaments rules have meant players ranked in the world top 64 are eligible to take part with several having taken the opportunity.
With four title wins, the most successful player in the seniors is Jimmy White, with the 10-time ranking event winner also slated to take part.
This comes 25 years after O’Sullivan won his first World Snooker Championship which he won in his 10th year of being a professional at the age of 25, as he seeks to add yet another record to his CV.

Ahead of the Chinese New Year, China is warning its people that gambling while on holiday poses significant risks, including financial ruin and even suicide.

China bans casino gambling everywhere on the mainland. The only place under China’s control where casinos are allowed is in Macau, a semi-autonomous Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic.
By law, Chinese citizens and residents are barred from gambling in foreign countries, though, of course, that doesn’t keep many from doing so while in Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Las Vegas.
The 2026 Chinese New Year is tomorrow, Feb. 17. The Year of the Fire Horse, the Spring Festival holiday period, which began Sunday, runs through Monday, Feb. 23. During the celebration, most workers are afforded paid time off and take their families on vacations, with Singapore, Macau, and other parts of Southeast Asia popular destinations.
China: Don’t Gamble Overseas
Chinese President Xi Jinping links cross-border gambling to heightened national security risks. China has always prohibited casinos from marketing their operations to mainlanders.
In one high-profile case in 2017, China imprisoned 19 employees of Australia-based Crown Resorts for promoting gambling trips Down Under. Jason O’Connor, then the head of Crown’s international VIP program, spent 18 months in a Chinese prison, often described as among the world’s most brutal detention centers.
With the Chinese New Year in full swing, the CPC, through its embassies, is reminding Chinese people not to gamble internationally. Casino.org obtained and translated the gambling warning issued by the Chinese Embassy in Singapore.
The Chinese Embassy in Singapore once again solemnly reminds Chinese tourists visiting Singapore and Chinese citizens in Singapore to strengthen their legal awareness and stay away from gambling,” read the notice from the Singaporean Chinese Embassy.
Singapore is home to two casinos in Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa.
Suicide Story Fabricated?
The Chinese Embassy in Singapore said gambling comes with significant risks to Chinese people. The Embassy cited a recent incident involving a Chinese tourist at Marina Bay Sands who killed himself after gambling.
Recently, a Chinese citizen jumped to his death after gambling at the Marina Bay Sands. The Embassy is guiding his family through the funeral arrangements,” the notice said.
However, there have been no local media or police reports of such a recent suicide at Marina Bay Sands. No story has been made public about any suicide within or from the integrated resort in months.
“In recent years, our Embassy has handled several deaths related to gambling and has previously issued relevant warnings. Gambling is strictly prohibited under Chinese law, and the amendment to the Criminal Law has formally criminalized cross-border gambling. Even if overseas casinos are legally operating, Chinese citizens who gamble across borders are suspected of violating Chinese law, especially those involved in organizing gambling activities, and will be held legally responsible. The Embassy and consulates cannot provide consular protection for illegal activities,” the statement continued.
“Participating in gambling leads to financial ruin, family breakdown, and even death. Cross-border gambling may also bring risks such as fraud, money laundering, kidnapping, illegal detention, human trafficking, and human smuggling,” the Embassy notice concluded.

Ronnie O’Sullivan withdrew from the Northern Ireland Open ahead of his first round match
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan has withdrawn from the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open due to medical reasons, the World Snooker Tour (WST) has announced.
O’Sullivan was due to face Long Zehuang in the last 64 in Belfast on Monday afternoon, but announcement from WST on their website confirmed he had pulled out of the event.
China’s Long receives a bye to the last 32, with the tournament at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast running until October 27th.

O’Sullivan hasn’t featured since being knocked out of the first round of the English Open last month after a shock defeat to He Guoqiang, where he describing his performance as “awful” and “embarrassing”.
It is the third consecutive tournament that O’Sullivan has withdrawn from, having also skipped the British Open and Wuhan Open in recent weeks. He is next due to feature at the International Champions event in China from November 3-10.

World No 1 Judd Trump began his title defence with a 4-0 win over Ishpreet Singh Chadha needing just 49 minutes to whitewash his opponent with the aid of breaks of 72, 65 and 112.

If there’s one genre THP can never get tired of, it’s YA fantasy! So today, we’re reviewing Sher Lee’s newest novel, Legend of the White Snake.
Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee retells the Chinese legend of the same name, only it’s now an even more swoon-worthy, queer romance between two teenagers: a stubborn prince named Xian and a snake spirit named Zhen.
We literally finished reading Legend of the White Snake in one sitting, and it may just be one of our favorite fantasies this year. So here are three things we love about it!
Summary:When Prince Xian was a boy, a white snake bit his mother and condemned her to a slow, painful death. The only known cure is an elusive spirit pearl—or an antidote created from the rare white snake itself. Desperate and determined, Xian travels to the city of Changle, where an oracle predicted he would find and capture a white snake.
Seven years ago, Zhen, a white snake in the West Lake, consumed a coveted spirit pearl, which gave him special powers—including the ability to change into human form.
In Changle, Xian encounters an enigmatic but beautiful stable boy named Zhen. The two are immediately drawn to each other, but Zhen soon realizes that he is the white snake Xian is hunting. As their feelings grow deeper, will the truth about Zhen’s identity tear them apart?
Elements Of Chinese Culture
In case you didn’t know, the Legend of the White Snake, also known as Madame White Snake, is one of China’s Four Great Folktales. It has been adapted into several movies, TV shows, and other media. And this retelling by Sher Lee gender-bends the female snake spirit from the original into a young man. We love the nods to Chinese culture, beliefs, and traditions throughout this novel. Recurring themes include the concept of yin and yang, filial piety, divine prophecies, proper temple etiquette, and so many others!
The Pacing
We really loved the pacing of Sher Lee’s Legend of the White Snake because the story flows so smoothly. We were so glad that Xian’s identity as the prince did not become a misunderstanding at the beginning. Xian and Zhen also took their time developing their relationship rather than rushing into the instant attraction. We laughed then cried when their romance takes a turn once the truth became known. It was truly such a happy medium, and we couldn’t ask for more.
They Fight For Their Love
One of the main things from Legend of the White Snake that we’ll keep in our hearts is that we need to work harder than any fate or destiny. Xian tells Zhen that destiny is for people who don’t fight for what they really want in life. (And we took that personally!) Xian and Zhen’s distant past complicates their blissful present. They fall into incredibly difficult positions because of duty. But they both sacrifice everything to be together in the end, even if it took a little longer than expected.
Sher Lee’s Legend of the White Snake blesses us with a well-paced, queer retelling of a famous Chinese folktale, and we thoroughly enjoyed this tale from start to finish.

John Higgins became only the second snooker player to reach 1,000 career centuries despite crashing out of the English Open in Brentwood.
The 49-year-old Scot achieved the milestone with breaks of 108 and 105 in the third and fifth frames of his quarter-final clash against Mark Allen.
But it was not enough to seal a win that would have boosted his hopes of staying in the top 16 as Allen – who hit a century of his own in the opening frame – held firm in a gruelling decider to edge a 4-3 win.

Ronnie O’Sullivan is the only other player to have reached the four-figure century milestone, having done so in the final frame of his 2019 Players Championship final win over Neil Robertson.

After 38 years in business, Jing Jing Gourmet, Palo Alto’s much-loved Szechuan and Hunan restaurant, is set to close its doors this Sunday, May 19.
“The expenses are too much for us,” said restaurant manager Betty Tsai, daughter of restaurant owner Susan Tsai.
In recent years, the cost of rent, labor and materials increased while customers’ dining habits shifted, as fewer people commuted to work nearby, she says.
The restaurant’s lease ends at the end of May. The plan is for the business to find a new location nearby — potentially in Mountain View, Sunnyvale or Santa Clara — and focus on takeout, delivery and catering services, Tsai says.
“We want to express our deepest thanks for your patronage over the years,” the Tsai family announced on the restaurant’s website. “It has been an honor serving this community for 38 years, and we are so grateful for your support and friendship.”
You have just a few days left to enjoy the restaurant’s signature dishes, from tea-smoked duck ($24.50) to kung pao chicken ($17.95), won tons ($12.50), barbecue pork buns ($3) and yuzu citrus cheesecake ($3.50 per slice). Other specialties are the restaurant’s dan dan sauce and candied pecans, according to Tsai.

Mark Williams lost 10-9 to Si Jiahui in the first round of the World Snooker Championship
Mark Williams’ quest for a fourth World Snooker Championship title ended in the first round as he lost a last-frame thriller to 2023 semi-finalist Si Jiahui.
Sixth seed Williams – world champion in 2000, 2003 and 2018 – led 5-4 after Monday’s opening session but then found himself 8-5 down as Si reeled off four frames in a row on Tuesday afternoon.
The 49-year-old then recovered from 9-7 down to force a decider but his Chinese opponent, 21, knocked in a nerveless break of 77 in the 19th frame to secure a second-round meeting with fellow qualifier Jak Jones.

Williams’ exit takes the number of seeds eliminated in the first round to six, with defending champion Luca Brecel, four-time winner Mark Selby, Ali Carter, Gary Wilson and Zhang Anda also dispatched.

Williams was hoping to become the oldest champion in the tournament’s history, a record held by Ronnie O’Sullivan, who was 46 years and 148 days when he won the most recent of his seven Crucible trophies in 2022.
O’Sullivan begins his bid for an outright record eighth world title against Jackson Page at 2.30pm on Wednesday, with that match then concluding from 1pm the following day.

Sandwiches around the world excite Jeff Mauro, the Chicago native Food Network personality. Nowadays, the once and future Sandwich King isn’t globetrotting as much, and in 2024 he’s plotting a series of collaborations to showcase his gourmet food brand, Mauro Provisions.
One of those collaborations starts on Friday, February 16 with another Chicago native, Henry Cai of 3 Little Pigs. Cai, who recently opened in the South Loop — inside the Molly’s Cupcakes space, 1150 S. Wabash — will top his signature Chinese American fried chicken sandwiches with Mauro’s Honey G Pepper Relish, which is a finely chopped version of his giardiniera. Cai says it’s a perfect match, saying when you’re eating giardiniera, you sometimes don’t get all the ingredients in a bite. A finely chopped relish is easily spreadable with the spicy oil, carrots, and celery evenly distributed.
They mix the relish with honey for a savory, sweet, and crunch condiment. Mauro says the relish gives eaters “a natural high.” The sandwich comes with the relish and a thinly sliced cucumber salad. There’s also 3 Little Pigs’ hot mustard, mayo, and iceberg lettuce. It’s called “the Hot Mauro.” The sandwich is available for a limited time.
“It’s like a Chinese-Italian symphony,” Mauro says.
Cai says he wasn’t sure if he was being pranked when Mauro sent him a message via Instagram asking if he was interested in teaming up. Mauro says folks from around the world have an affinity for Chinese food in its different varieties. China may not have a huge history with sandwich culture — baos seem to fill that niche. But Cai fuses the food his father cooked for him growing up with his own ideas. Mauro says Cai has “a gift for frying chicken.”
“His is what this is like what I crave in a fried chicken sandwich, right?” Mauro says. “it’s balanced — it’s marinated chicken thigh and the coating is so good.”

Mauro was then left with figuring out how to add giardiniera to a fried chicken sandwich with Chinese spices and toppings: “When I started formulating the Honey G pepper relish, I just knew the flavors, the fermented quality, the oily quality, you know — the crunch — the color, the sweetness would lend itself well.”
Speaking with Mauro about combining Chinese and Italian food brought up memories of a Lincoln Park restaurant that opened in the ‘90s called Luigi’s of Hong Kong. The restaurant teased customers with a revolution with a menu that included pasta and pot stickers. There was also a location in suburban Lake Zurich.
Giardiniera is like a mystic art to Chicagoans, with companies closely guarding their recipes. Recently, Cai has been studying the sacred alchemy while preparing his own tribute to Chicago street food, combining Chinese hot pot with Italian beef. Think of it as a Chinese counterpart to Kasama’s Adobo beef sandwich with Filipino flavors. Cai knows he’ll need to include giardiniera in some form. Perhaps he has a new collaborator with Mauro.

LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -The Chinese Community Center (CCC) is preparing for its Annual Lunar New Year Gala Show with an art exhibition. A portion of the paintings sold will benefit the CCC and the artists who live in Tianjin, a Chinese city.
“They are the chubby, lovely, red-cheeked babies that carry symbols such as the Dragon. It has this historical part, the children in these historical costumes,” described President of the CCC, Wei Qin.
President Qin was born in the Year of the Dragon. She says these years have a greater meaning than the other eleven represented by common animals.
“We as Asians have such a deep, deep love for dragons. It’s not a day-to-day animal like a rat or a rooster, those weird things, but a mysterious, powerful figure.”
This will be the first Chinese Lunar New Year recognized as a New York school holiday. The day falls on Saturday, February 10 this year, but next year…
“…2025, it falls on a Wednesday. The kids will be snuggled up at home not going to school. Parents, be ready for that!” exclaimed Qin.
CCC’s 50th Lunar New Year Gala will welcome everyone to the Empire State Plaza on Sunday, February 11. Qin herself is preparing to be in the festivities.
“Everybody likes to be recognized. I think it’s really important for everybody to know that there are other types of celebrations rather than Christmas and Thanksgiving that are fun to everybody.”
The Yan Liu Qing Art Exhibition will be hosted at the Chinese Community Center from Friday, February 2 at 5:30 p.m. to Sunday, February 4 at 6:00 p.m. in Latham. More information on the event and tickets can be found on the Center’s website.

One of my first EVER TikTok follows was the author of this recipe I’m about to rave over: Chef Jon Kung. He’s a Chinese American chef who appeared on my FYP making different condiments like chili oil, explaining spices, trying different cooking techniques, and talking about food and its place in society and culture.
He also introduced me to third-culture cooking, where people blend their unique makeup of food traditions, ingredients, and flavors into their food. As someone who’s learning about their heritage culture (I was adopted from China) and continuing to embrace their adopted culture of Jewish American cuisine, TikTok really said for you (IYKYK).
All that to say, when I heard he was releasing his debut cookbook, Kung Food: Chinese American Recipes from a Third Culture Kitchen, and was offered the opportunity to get an early look, the answer was an immediate yes! I went straight to the noodle section and immediately found his ginger scallion noodles. The hardest part, I thought, was going to be making the ginger scallion oil. Spoiler: It was not hard.
Ginger Scallion Oil Is Liquid Gold (or Something Green)
Before reading his recipe, I really didn’t know much about this condiment. I tend to stray towards heartier umami flavors like chili crisp as a go-to topping. To me, this recipe is giving light umami. It is an oil, but it’s light, bright, a little salty, and a little savory.
I decided to make the cooked oil, not the raw version, because it’s less pungent and also because it has a longer shelf life and I will not be rushed.
Most importantly, it’s easy to make! Any effort is well worth it. You thinly slice scallions (a good reminder to read the recipe first), mince some ginger, mix them with salt, heat up oil, then pour it over the ginger scallion mixture. Wait for it to cool and ta-da!
Now for the moment I was so excited about! I love finding new ways to eat noodles. Much like spreadsheets, it really brings me joy. For this recipe, you can choose any noodle you want. Our Culinary Producer James introduced me to these knife-sliced noodles and I immediately wanted to use them for this. They’re long, bouncy, and have rippled edges that hold sauce well.
All you do is cook the noodles according to package directions, drain, and mix with ginger scallion oil. The point of this recipe is to emphasize the oil, so the suggested toppings keep it minimal. And so I did.
After I scraped my bowl clean, I immediately wanted more. They had a deliciously subtle flavor that’s neutral enough to go with anything. The ginger and scallions balance each other out perfectly. The ginger makes it feel a little zesty and light, but it’s not at all overpowering.

When the Chinese Exclusion Act came into effect in 1923, it didn’t just effectively halt Chinese immigration to Canada — it extinguished the family lines of thousands of labourers already here.
Many were condemned to bachelorhood or cut off from loved ones in China, said Catherine Clement, curator of the inaugural exhibition for the Chinese Canadian Museum that opens to the public on Saturday in Vancouver’s Chinatown, on the 100th anniversary of the controversial law’s enactment.
“They just withered here,” Clement said. “They had no descendants left to tell their stories. Nobody even remember they existed … they broke while they were here.”

Some ended up in mental health institutions, including Coquitlam’s Essondale Hospital, said Clement, calling them “the face of exclusion.”

Now their stories are being told at the exhibition, “The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act.”
Executives at the Chinese Canadian Museum said they chose its opening date as a poignant reminder of a part of Canada’s history that has often been overlooked.
“I think many people felt that through their history lessons or through schooling, people never understood the full history,” said Grace Wong, the museum’s board chair.

The museum opens its permanent location in Chinatown’s historic Wing Sang Building after more than six years of planning, starting with then-premier John Horgan mandating the province’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to establish the institution.

The society behind the museum was launched in 2020 after community consultations, and the physical location was found in 2022 after the province provided $27.5 million in funding.
An opening ceremony on Friday was attended by B.C. Premier David Eby and other officials. Eby praised Horgan for championing the museum as anti-Asian racism spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eby, who also highlighted the recent election of Olivia Chow as mayor of Toronto, called the Chinese Exclusion Act “the most racist piece of legislation ever passed in our parliament.”
Chinese Canadians reveal their experiences with racism
Museum CEO Melissa Karmen Lee described the institution as a startup, saying that the facility’s ultimate success will depend on how many visitors it can draw.
Lee said she hopes the museum can contribute to the revitalization of Chinatown and draw more foot traffic to the community.
“We hope to have partners and shops and cultural institutions also supporting us in moving and coming to Chinatown,” she said. “We hope all that becomes a part of what it is to visit the Chinese Canadian Museum.”
Clement said the subject of the exclusion act, also known as the 1923 Canadian Immigration Act, first caught her interest when she spoke to Chinese Canadian war veterans for another exhibit.
“I would say, where were you born?” Clement said. “They would say Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary. And yet, they would pull out an immigration card, and almost all of them were dated 1924.

“Many years later, I realized they were evidence of the exclusion act,” she said. “These are the guys who served in the war for Canada, and they were Canadian-born, and yet they have an immigration card. They were the only community in Canada where children were given an immigration card, who were Canadian born.”

Clement compiled the documents in the Paper Trail exhibit mainly through private collections and official records from institutions such as psychiatric hospitals.
Lee said the museum is also featuring a second exhibit for its opening, focused on Chinese migration to Canada from as early as 1788.
The key, she said, is to present a diversity of voices within Chinese Canadian history.
“We have Chinese people immigrating to Canada not only from China, but also from Vietnam, from Cambodia, from South Africa, from Mauritius,” Lee said. “So, we want to tell all of these stories when we talk about our exhibitions at the Chinese Canadian Museum.”
Ultimately, Wong said the museum belongs to all Canadians regardless of ethnic or cultural background. She said she hopes people from all parts of the community will take advantage of the new facility to learn more about the challenges people faced in striving for a multicultural Canada.
“It is for all of us because the Chinese Canadian history is fundamentally part of the full B.C. history,” she said. “It’s fundamentally part of the full Canadian history, and it’s a very key moment for all of us.”

President Joe Biden said on Saturday that he ordered U.S. officials to shoot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon earlier this week and that national-security leaders decided the best time for the operation was when the the object was over water.
“They successfully took it down, and I want to compliment our aviators who did it,” Biden said after getting off Air Force One en route to Camp David.
Fighter jets shot down the giant white balloon off the Carolina coast after it apparently traversed sensitive military sites across North America, prompting the postponement of a high-level U.S. diplomatic trip to China and becoming the latest flashpoint in the prevailing tense tone between Washington and Beijing.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that Biden approved the shoot-down on Wednesday, saying it should be done “as soon as the mission could be accomplished without undue risk to American lives under the balloon’s path.”
Austin said that, due to the size and altitude of the balloon, which was floating at an altitude of about 60,000 feet, the military had determined that taking it down over land would pose an undue risk to people on the ground.
The balloon was observed Saturday morning over the Carolinas as it approached the Atlantic coast.
In preparation for the operation, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed airspace over the Carolina coastline, including the Charleston and Myrtle Beach airports in South Carolina and the Wilmington airport in North Carolina. The FAA rerouted air traffic from the area and warned of delays as a result of the flight restrictions.
An operation was underway in U.S. territorial waters in the Atlantic Ocean to recover debris from the balloon, which had been estimated to be about the size of three school buses. CNN reported that, according to a senior military source, Navy divers and unmanned vessels were among the assets deployed for the recovery effort, primarily, according to the source, in 47-foot-deep water.
The balloon was downed by Air Force fighter aircraft, according to two officials who were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. CNN reported having been informed that a single missile fired by one of the U.S. jets had brought the balloon down.
Television footage showed a small explosion, followed by the balloon descending toward the water. U.S. military jets were seen flying in the vicinity and ships were deployed in the water to mount the recovery operation.
A South Carolina man posted video that appeared to capture the event as it unfolded. He told CNN he was a social-studies teacher and that his fiancée had recommended he point his camera at the object in advance of its downing.
Officials were aiming to time the operation so they could recover as much of the debris as possible before it sinks into the ocean. The Pentagon had previously estimated that any debris field would be substantial.
The balloon was first spotted over Montana, which is home to one of America’s three nuclear-missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Biden had explored ordering the downing of the balloon over land when he was first briefed on it Tuesday, but Pentagon officials advised against that course of action, warning that the potential risk to people on the ground outweighed an assessment of potential Chinese intelligence gains.
The public disclosure of the balloon’s travels this week prompted the cancellation of a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Beijing that had been scheduled for Sunday for talks aimed at reducing U.S.-China tensions.
The Chinese government on Saturday sought to play down that cancellation. “In actuality, the U.S. and China have never announced any visit, the U.S. making any such announcement is their own business, and we respect that,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Saturday morning.
The Pentagon also acknowledged reports of a second balloon flying over Latin America. “We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon,” Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a question about the second balloon.
Blinken, who had been due to depart Washington for Beijing late Friday, said he had told senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in a phone call that sending the balloon over the U.S. was “an irresponsible act and that [China’s] decision to take this action on the eve of my visit is detrimental to the substantive discussions that we were prepared to have.”
Uncensored reactions on the Chinese internet mirrored the official government stance that the U.S. was overhyping the situation. Some used it as a chance to poke fun at U.S. defenses, saying it couldn’t even defend against a balloon, and nationalist influencers leapt to use the news to mock the U.S.
Republican politicians in the U.S. sought to characterize Biden’s and the Pentagon’s decision to monitor the balloon until it reached a location where it could be safely targeted militarily as kowtowing to the Chinese.
China has denied any claims of spying and said it was a civilian-use balloon intended for meteorology research. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the balloon’s journey was out of its control and urged the U.S. not to “smear” it based on an isolated balloon incident.

The China markets tumbled Monday morning after President Xi Jinping consolidated his grip on power even further by stacking the party’s most powerful decision-making body with his key allies and getting a third term in office.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index plunged 6% to 15,220 points in afternoon trading, the second-lowest level since the 2008 global financial crisis. Chinese tech giants Tencent and Meituan had tumbled as much as 10.2% and 13.8%, respectively. The billionaire moguls behind the companies—Tencent’s Ma Huateng and Meituan’s Wang Xing—each lost more than $1 billion of their wealth within the span of a couple hours, making them among the worst performers on the World’s Real-Time Billionaire list on Monday.
On Sunday, Xi revealed the lineup of the Politburo Standing Committee, China’s top governing body. The other six men on the committee are all seen as loyalists with close ties to Xi.
Analysts say investors are growing increasingly anxious over the new leadership’s continued regulatory pressure on private enterprises, as well as the country’s strict Covid-Zero policy which has shown no signs of letting up. In Xi’s opening speech delivered during the week-long congress, he praised China’s Covid prevention measures as a “people’s war” to fight the coronavirus and protect lives.
Those measures, coupled with an ongoing emphasis on areas such as security, regulating the housing market and promoting common prosperity, has disappointed investors who had been looking for signs of regulatory easing.
“The concern is that President Xi now has unfettered power to pass policies that are not friendly to the market,” says Justin Tang, Singapore-based head of Asian research at advisory group United First Partners.
Dickie Wong, executive director of Hong Kong-based Kingston Securities, also says the party congress has given investors little reason to cheer. He adds that there are also rising concerns about escalating tensions between China and the U.S.
In a thinly veiled criticism directed at Washington, Xi said in his opening remarks that China has stood up against unilateralism, protectionism and “bullying.” He also vowed to strengthen China’s self-reliance on critical technologies, just as the Biden Administration was issuing a sweeping set of measures aimed at curbing its access to advanced chip-making equipment.
The Chinese economy, in the meantime, has shown signs of recovery but its long-term growth outlook remains clouded. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose at a better-than-expected 3.9% in the third quarter from the same period a year ago, according to data released today, which had originally been scheduled to be published on October 18 but was delayed due to the party congress.
But with few signs pointing to a relaxing of the country’s strict Covid measures that Fitch Ratings says have “stifled consumption and exacerbated business uncertainty,” the country’s economic growth would likely slow to 2.8% this year, well below the leadership’s initial target of around 5.5%, according to the rating agency.
Xi has said that China would continue to place development as a top priority, and he says he wants the country to embark on a trajectory of high-quality growth as part of its national rejuvenation, a term that refers to achieving higher standards of living and possessing advanced technologies comparable with those in Western countries.
China’s ambassador to the United States has thanked billionaire Elon Musk for proposing a special administration zone for Taiwan but stressed Beijing’s call for “peaceful reunification and ‘one country, two systems’” for the island.
Days after floating a possible deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine that drew condemnation in Ukraine, Musk suggested that tensions between China and Taiwan could be resolved by handing over some control of Taiwan to Beijing.
“My recommendation . . . would be to figure out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is reasonably palatable, probably won’t make everyone happy,” Musk told the Financial Times in an interview published on Friday.
Musk was responding to a question about China, where his Tesla TSLA.O electric car company operates a large factory.
Beijing, which claims Taiwan as one of its provinces, has long vowed to bring Taiwan under its control and has not ruled out the use of force to do so. Democratically ruled Taiwan’s government strongly objects to China’s sovereignty claims and says only the island’s 23 million people can decide its future.
In tweets posted on Saturday, Chinese ambassador to the United States Qin Gang wrote: “I would like to thank @elonmusk for his call for peace across the Taiwan Strait and his idea about establishing a special administrative zone for Taiwan.”
“Actually, Peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question … and the best approach to realizing national reunification,” he added.
“Provided that China’s sovereignty, security and development interests are guaranteed, after reunification Taiwan will enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region, and a vast space for development,” the ambassador wrote.
China has offered Taiwan a “one country, two systems” model of autonomy similar to what Hong Kong has, but that has been rejected by all mainstream political parties in Taiwan and has no public support, especially after Beijing imposed a tough National Security Law in the city in 2020.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment on Musk’s comments on Saturday.
