  • Chilean Authorities Raid Homes of Former Codelco Executives in El Teniente Investigation

    SANTIAGO, Feb 19 (Reuters) – Chilean ⁠authorities ⁠on Thursday raided ⁠the homes of two recently ​dismissed executives of state copper miner Codelco ‌as they continue their ‌investigation into a deadly collapse ⁠at ⁠the El Teniente mine last year.

    Officials during the ​searches seized digital equipment from ex-Chief Operations Officer Mauricio Barraza and former mine manager ​Claudio Sougarret, Chile’s prosecutor’s office said in ⁠a ⁠statement.

    Codelco facilities were ⁠also ​searched, with some equipment voluntarily handed over by ​the company. ⁠Codelco declined to comment.

    Authorities added that items belonging to Rodrigo Andrades, former El Teniente projects manager, had been ⁠seized in October.

    The three executives were removed from their ⁠jobs last week after an internal audit found inconsistencies tied to a 2023 rock explosion at El Teniente, including in Codelco’s following reports to mining regulator Sernageomin.

    Sernageomin said earlier this week it would file formal ⁠complaints to authorities.

    Last year, the same mine was the site of a collapse that killed six people.

    Panama is sometimes seen as just the country of the Panama Canal and retired expats, but there are a whole lot of other reasons why Panama should be your next travel destination. This small, beautiful, friendly country boasts a fabulous climate, some amazing beaches and rainforests, and stunning colonial relics, and it is a wonderfully affordable place to visit as well.

    One of the emerging places in Panama that is set to be a standout destination for 2026 is the Chiriqui Province, on the Pacific Coast, about 300 miles southwest of the capital, Panama City. It is a fantastically diverse region, offering a combination of stunning natural beauty, fascinating history, and castaway-style vibes. It is one of Panama’s biggest coffee-producing regions, and the Feria de las Flores y Del Café in the picture-perfect town of Boquete is a wonderful way to experience the culture surrounding this industry.     Chiriqui’s natural environment is one of its biggest draws. La Amistad International Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site covering nearly 1 million acres and Central America’s largest nature reserve.     For many years, Colombia has had a reputation as one of the most dangerous South American destinations to visit, but the last few years have seen it shake off this image, and there are some excellent destinations set to be huge in 2026. The vibrant city of Medellin is emblematic of Colombia’s evolution, having gone from the narco capital of the country to one of the most exciting food cities in South America in just two decades. Famed for its buzzy nightlife and ingenious urban sprawl, the cluster of hillside communities that make up this vibey city is filled with incredible places to eat and drink, and the arrival of the $100-million Wake development is set to turbo-charge this foodie atmosphere.

    Brazil is hardly a hidden gem in South America. From the endless white-sand beaches and vibrant nightlife of Rio de Janeiro to the lush Amazonian rainforests, Brazil has been a bucket list destination for many travelers for years. But there are still plenty of undiscovered gems in this vast country ready to be discovered.

    One spot that is being heralded as a breakout star for 2026 is Minas Gerais. One of the largest states in Brazil, it has been overlooked by international tourists for years but is an astonishingly rich and diverse region with a wonderful gastronomic culture, beautiful colonial architecture, and vibrant boteco nightlife. Its capital, Belo Horizonte, is sophisticated and lively in equal measures, with an astonishingly hip and forward-thinking dining scene boasting a series of young, talented chefs like Caio Soter and Bruna Rezende. It is one of the best places in Brazil for contemporary art, with spots like Mercado Novo, Albuquerque Contemporânea, and the recently-opened Galeria Ficus in the city itself, and Inhotim, Latin America’s largest open-air art museum, just over 30 miles out of town.

    Another fantastic yet underappreciated gem in Brazil is the lush, stunning wetlands of the Pantanal. The world’s largest tropical wetland, this enormous region has a truly staggering variety and amount of wildlife, from jaguars, capybaras, and giant otters to caimans, tapirs, and the legendary hyacinth macaws. A seasonal floodplain of epic proportions, it is exceptionally remote and quite a challenge to visit, but this makes it all the more worthwhile.

    Chile is an extraordinary country. A long sliver of land sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Argentina, it runs around half the length of South America, bordering Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. Often overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors, it offers an astounding variety of landscapes, ecosystems, and cultures, from incredible wines and gaucho culture to the wide-open skies of the Atacama Desert and the soaring peaks of the Andes.

    Right at the southern tip of the continent, Patagonia is a famous destination for adventure travelers, with Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park a favorite. But recently, the lesser-known delights of the north of the region have begun to gain popularity, thanks to its unspoiled natural beauty, incredible wildlife, and magnificent hot springs.

    Another relatively underexplored spot in Chile that is primed for a huge 2026 is the Colchagua Valley, Chilean wine country. Chilean wine is often slept on, overlooked in favor of its noisier Argentinian cousin, but the Colchagua Valley boasts some of the world’s most impressive wineries, as well as being the center of Chilean cowboy culture. With 2026 marking the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of Chile’s Wine Route, it is looking like it will be a big year for this area in particular.

    Bolivia

    Bolivia is one of South America’s true hidden gems. Known by international tourists and photography fans primarily for the bizarre and beautiful shimmering bone-white landscape of Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, the rest of the country is far less explored. But there’s a tremendous amount to discover, and 2026 might be the year it gets the recognition it deserves.

    Potosí is the region that surrounds the otherworldly expanse of Salar de Uyuni and has plenty of other attractions to recommend it to adventurous tourists. The capital city, Potosí, has an extraordinary history intertwined with the silver mines of the Cerro Rico, and popular legend has it that at least one street in the city was literally paved with silver! A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city boasts some truly gorgeous Mestizo-Baroque houses, churches, and theaters, as well as the Casa Real de la Moneda, the former mint now converted into a museum.

    The rest of the region is splendidly weird, from the looming summit of Cerro Rico (known as the mountain that eats men due to the vast number of people who died working in its mines) to the crimson waters of the Laguna Colorada. One of the main attractions is the bubbling thermal springs that pop up from the volcanic energy below the surface of the Earth, like the Termas de Polques and the mythical Ojo del Inca, usually known as Laguna Tarapaya.

    To curate this list, we looked at lists of travel destinations for 2026 from authoritative sources, searching for compelling arguments in favor of particular countries or destinations. We prioritized popular countries with regions or cities that have, up to now, been underexplored or overlooked, as well as places that have a particular anniversary or occasion that would suggest increased tourist interest in 2026. Other considerations were areas that offered specific experiences that were similar to those elsewhere in the country but with fewer visitors.

  • Chile Wildfires Leave 19 Dead Amid Extreme Heat as Scores Evacuated

    CONCEPCION, Chile, Jan 19 (Reuters) – Wildfires ‌in ​Chile have left at ‌least 19 people dead, authorities said on Monday, as ​the government carried out mass evacuations and fought nearly two dozen blazes ‍exacerbated by intense heat and ​high winds.

    While weather conditions overnight helped control some fires, the largest ​were still ⁠active, with adverse conditions expected throughout the day, security minister, Luis Cordero, said at a news briefing on Monday.

    “The projection we have today is of high temperatures,” Cordero said, and the main worry was that ‌new fires would be triggered throughout the region.

    Parts of central and southern ​Chile ‌were under extreme heat ‍warnings with ⁠temperatures expected to reach up to 37 Celsius (99 Fahrenheit).

    STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN NUBLE, BIO BIO

    As of late Sunday, Chile’s CONAF forestry agency said firefighters were combating 23 fires across the country, the largest of which were in regions of Ñuble and Bío Bío, where President Gabriel Boric declared a state ​of catastrophe.

    Over 20,000 hectares (77 square miles) have been razed so far, an area about the size of Seattle, with the largest fire surpassing 14,000 hectares on the outskirts of the coastal city Concepcion.

    The fast-moving blaze tore through the towns of Penco and Lirquen over the weekend, destroying hundreds of homes and killing several people, with authorities still assessing the damage.

    HEAT, BLAZES ALSO IMPACT ARGENTINA

    Authorities are currently battling the fire as it threatened Manzano prison on ​the edge of Concepcion and the town of Tome to the north.

    Both Chile and Argentina rang in the new year with heat waves which have continued into January. Earlier this month, wildfires ​broke out in Argentina’s Patagonia, burning around 15,000 hectares.

  • Cubans Rally Against US ‘Imperialists’ Before Havana Embassy

    HAVANA, Jan 16 (Reuters) – Thousands ‌of ​Cubans gathered before the ‌U.S. embassy in Havana at daybreak Friday to ​protest against what they denounced as U.S. aggression in the region ‍following the capture of ​Venezuelan leader Nicola Maduro, a Cuban ally.

    Tension between the two ​longtime ⁠rivals has spiked since the U.S. attack on Venezuela, which resulted in the deaths of 32 Cuban military and intelligence officers believed to be defending Maduro were killed, marking the first clashes ‌between U.S. and Cuban forces in decades.

    Cubans bundled in hats and ​jackets ‌gathered on the capital`s ‍Malecon ⁠waterfront boulevard waving Cuban and Venezuelan flags under gray skies as blustery winds and waves buffeted the coast.

    Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, dressed in olive-green military garb and with his back to the U.S. embassy, called on Cubans to remain united in the face of U.S. ​pressure.

    “No, imperialists, we have absolutely no fear of you…and we don`t like to be threatened,” he said, turning to wave his finger at the embassy building. “You will not intimidate us.”

    Both sides have ratcheted up political rhetoric in recent days, marking a new low in long frosty relations between the U.S. and communist-run Cuba, which lies 90 miles (145 km)from the shores of Florida. 

    U.S. President Donald Trump said on ​Sunday that no more Venezuelan oil or money would go to Cuba, warning Havana to make a deal before it’s “too late.”

    Diaz-Canel said after Trump’s comments that Cuba would defend ​its homeland “to the last drop of blood.”

  • The Right Wing Rises in Latin America

    The referendum failed, and, two years later, Chile returned to democracy. Kast, despite his preference for autocracy, took advantage of the restored political freedoms. He won a parliamentary seat in 2001 and eventually began running for President. In 2017, he finished fourth. Four years later, after founding his own right-wing party, he came in second, to Boric. Kast conceded defeat without complaint. He stands out from some of his right-wing colleagues for his relatively understated demeanor; he is neither as flamboyant as Javier Milei, in Argentina, nor as gleefully vicious as Nayib Bukele, in El Salvador. A pro-life Catholic with nine children, he opposes gay marriage and trans rights, objects to taxes and big government, and dislikes environmental regulations—but he presents his views in a lawyerly, reasonable-sounding way.

    After losing to Boric, Kast built his following by amplifying concerns around uncontrolled immigration and increasing public insecurity. Chile has a higher standard of living than most of its neighbors and is an attractive destination for migrants. In the past decade, some two million migrants have entered the country, which has a population of only nineteen million. As in the U.S., the new arrivals have been blamed for an uptick in violent crime. Kast promised a hardline response: he vowed to deport more than three hundred thousand undocumented migrants, many of them from Venezuela, and to build several maximum-security detention centers to accommodate others. To stem the influx, he would erect fences and dig ditches along the borders with Bolivia and Peru.

    Chile has spent a decade oscillating between the center left and the center right, and Kast’s election is a departure—as well as an echo of a regional trend toward authoritarianism. After his victory, he travelled to Argentina, where he met with Milei, a self-described “anarcho-capitalist” who delights followers with performative attacks on the opposition. (In a WhatsApp exchange with me after Kast’s victory, Milei credited the ascent of the Latin American right to voters’ impatience with “suffocating taxation” and “the inefficiency, obscene privileges, and hypocrisy of left-wing politicians.”) The two posed for photos next to a chainsaw, the talisman for Milei’s efforts to slash government. Since assuming office, in 2023, Milei has eliminated half of Argentina’s ministries. He has also espoused unswerving loyalty to Trump, echoing many of his positions. In exchange, the U.S. has supplied billions of dollars of bailout money to ease Argentina’s enormous debts. Standing beside Milei, Kast theatrically exclaimed, “Freedom advances throughout Latin America!” But, when reporters asked if he planned to bring the chainsaw ideology to Chile, he hedged, saying only that his team had been “consulting” with friendly governments—including the right-wing administrations in Argentina, Hungary, Italy, and the U.S.

    Kast also said that he’d spoken with two conservative candidates whom he’d defeated in the Chilean election, suggesting that he might bring them into his government. They are the former labor minister Evelyn Matthei, whose father was a general in Pinochet’s regime, and a bombastic hard-right politician with the extravagant name of Johannes Maximilian Kaiser Barents-von Hohenhagen. Kaiser, also of German descent, shares many of Kast’s views, but presents them less decorously; he describes himself as a “paleolibertarian” and “reactionary,” and endorses building detention camps for undocumented migrants and entirely closing the border with Bolivia. He calls for Pinochet-era torturers and murderers to be released from prison. Kast does, too, but he says it more elliptically. Earlier this month, as Chile’s parliament was discussing a bill to release aging or infirm repressors from prison, Kast said, “I don’t believe in plea bargaining. I believe in justice. And this means treating people with terminal illnesses, or those who are [no longer conscious], with respect.”

    In 2023, on the fiftieth anniversary of Pinochet’s coup, Boric reminded Chileans of the terrible price their country had paid, and announced a national search plan to ascertain the destinies of as many as three thousand citizens who remain missing. There are tens of thousands of people in Chile who survived being attacked by their own government, or who lost loved ones. This means that Kast will likely have to move carefully on issues of “historical memory.” But, half a century after the Pinochet coup, there is a disquieting trend in the hemisphere. That coup, which overthrew a Socialist government allied with Fidel Castro’s Cuba, was abetted by the Nixon Administration and its regional allies—right-wing military regimes that proceeded to wage a series of dirty wars against leftist citizens of their own countries. In Trump’s current standoff with Maduro, whom he has branded a “narcoterrorist,” right-wingers such as Kast and Milei have endorsed pushing him out of office by force.

  • Peru’s President to Declare Border State of Emergency to Prevent Entry of Undocumented Migrants

    LIMA (Reuters) -Peru will declare a state of emergency along its border with Chile, President José Jerí said on Friday, as migrants seek to cross into the country following a Chilean presidential frontrunner’s vow to expel undocumented migrants.

    The state of emergency “will generate tranquility before the risk of migrants entering without authorization,” said Jerí on X.

    At least 100 foreigners, mostly Venezuelans, are at the border seeking to cross into Peru, Peruvian police General Arturo Valverde told local television station Canal N on Friday. He said surveillance at the border has increased in anticipation of the declaration.

    On November 20, far-right Chilean presidential candidate José Antonio Kast, the favorite to win the runoff election next month against leftist Jeannette Jara, warned that illegal migrants must leave in the coming months or they will be detained and expelled when he comes to power.

    “If you don’t leave voluntarily, we will detain you, retain you, expel you, and you’ll leave with what you have on,” he said in a video message at the border.

  • Cosmic butterfly seen in stunning new image captured by telescope in Chile

    A telescope in Chile has captured a stunning new picture of a grand and graceful cosmic butterfly.

    The National Science Foundation’s NoirLab released the picture on Wednesday. The glowing “wings” appear to be bursting in the image. While the bipolar nebula goes by the monikers Butterfly Nebula, Bug Nebula or Caldwell 69, its official name is NGC 6302.

    Snapped last month by the Gemini South telescope — half of the International Gemini Observatory on Cerro Pachón, a mountain in Central Chile — the aptly named Butterfly Nebula is 2,500 to 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. A single light-year is 6 trillion miles.

    At the heart of this bipolar nebula is a white dwarf star that cast aside its outer layers of gas long ago. The discarded gas forms the butterfly-like wings billowing from the aging star, whose heat causes the gas to glow.

    Students in Chile chose this astronomical target to celebrate 25 years of operation by the International Gemini Observatory.

    “This picturesque object was chosen as a target for the 8.1-meter [26.5-foot] telescope by students in Chile as part of the Gemini First Light Anniversary Image Contest,” NoirLab wrote on its website. “The contest engaged students in the host locations of the Gemini telescopes to celebrate the legacy that the International Gemini Observatory has built since its completion, marked by Gemini South’s First Light in November 2000.”

    It’s not known exactly when NGC 6302 was discovered, NoirLab says, but a 1907 study by American astronomer Edward E. Barnard is often credited. Scottish astronomer James Dunlop could also have discovered it in 1826.

  • Giant Sinkhole in Chilean Mining Town Haunts Residents, Three Years On

    TIERRA AMARILLA (Reuters) -Residents in the mining town of Tierra Amarilla in the Chilean desert are hopeful that a new court ruling will allay their fears about a giant sinkhole that opened near their homes more than three years ago and remains unfilled.

    A Chilean environmental court this month ordered Minera Ojos del Salado, owned by Canada’s Lundin Mining, to repair environmental damage related to activity at its Alcaparrosa copper mine, which is thought to have triggered the sinkhole that appeared in 2022.

    The ruling calls on the company to protect the region’s water supply and refill the sinkhole. The cylindrical crater originally measured 64 meters (210 ft) deep and 32 meters (105 ft) wide at the surface.

    That has provided a small measure of relief to those in arid Tierra Amarilla in Chile’s central Atacama region, who fear that without remediation the gaping hole could swallow up more land.

    “Ever since the sinkhole occurred … we’ve lived in fear,” said Rudy Alfaro, whose home is 800 meters from the site. A health center and preschool are nearby too, she said.

    “We were afraid it would get bigger, that it would expand, move toward the houses.” 

    The sinkhole expelled clouds of dust in a recent earthquake, provoking more anxiety, she said.     

    The court upheld a shutdown of the small Alcaparrosa mine ordered by Chile’s environmental regulator in January, and confirmed “irreversible” damage to an aquifer, which drained water into the mine and weakened the surrounding rock.

    “This is detrimental to an area that is already hydrologically stressed,” said Rodrigo Saez, regional water director. 

    Lundin said it will work with authorities to implement remediation measures.

  • Brazil’s Sambaqui Cultural Boards Chilean Camilo Becerra’s ‘The Sky That We Paint,’ as Chile Punches Above Its Weight at San Sebastián (EXCLUSIVE)

    Brazil-based Sambaqui Cultural has boarded the “The Sky That We Paint” (“El cielo que pintamos”), the latest from Chile’s Camilo Becerra. It joins Storyboard Media, which also collaborated with Becerra on his last film, “Maybe It’s True What They Say About Us.”

    “Maybe It’s True…” world premiered at the San Sebastian Festival last year, and is now streaming on Prime Video after a festival run that included Göteborg, Chicago and Havana.  

    “The Sky That We Paint” follows three troubled teen siblings Ana (15), Matías (16) and Iggy (16) – as they deal with the challenges of youth, trauma and taboo. Bound by shared grief and a longing to escape their realities, Ana and Iggy form a powerful connection that spirals into a passionate but ultimately damaging relationship—one that leaves deep, lasting wounds. Years later, they reunite in search of Matías and a chance to recapture the innocence they once shared, only to discover that time has reshaped everything beyond recognition. The lead roles will be played by upcoming Chilean stars Clemente Rodríguez (“El Conde”) and Octavio Bernasconi (“La Jauria”).

    “I really appreciated the conceptual perspective of Camilo Becerra in his previous film ‘Maybe What They Say About Us Is True’ and I was very interested in the idea of joining forces to produce his new project,” said Sambaqui Cultural’s Joana Nin.

    “We’re experiencing a great moment for cinema in Brazil. Sambaqui Cultural has grown significantly in recent years. It’s a good time for international collaborations, so I’m very happy to be finalizing this co-production agreement with Storyboard Media here at the San Sebastián Festival,” she added.

    Aside from producing, Nin has directed a string of documentaries and feature films, led by Rio Film Festival winner “Captive Hearts.” Her Sambaqui Cultural partner Ade Muri’s credits include A Fabrica-produced “Não vamos pagar nada” and Pai em Dobro.”

    “At Storyboard Media, we have consolidated in recent years a production model aimed at connecting Latin American talent with global audiences. This is a remarkable moment to drive international co-productions and expand our strategic partnerships,” said Carlos Nuñez, co-founder of Storyboard Media alongside Gabriela Sandoval.

    He added: “We are thrilled to seal this co-production agreement with Sambaqui Cultural, bringing on board a key partner from such an important territory as Brazil. In this sense, the San Sebastián Film Festival is a vital platform to build bridges between Latin America and Europe and to showcase stories with both artistic depth and commercial potential beyond our borders.”

    They joined Becerra’s La Jauría Comunicaciones as co-producers last May.

    Set in late-1990s Santiago, the film weaves an intimate coming-of-age story with a sharp reflection on Chile’s authoritarian and neoliberal legacy. Becerra, known for exploring themes of social and familial rupture—draws on his own teenage experiences to craft a raw, contemplative portrait of youth on the edge.

    The latest news comes as Chile continues to punch above its weight in festivals and markets worldwide. Its presence in San Sebastian is led by Cannes Un Certain Regard winner “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo”, and Dominga Sotomayor’s “Swim to Me” (“Limpia”), both competing in the festival’s Horizontes Latinos sidebar, “Swim” opening the major sidebar. Two other pics also compete in the sidebar: “Cuerpo Celeste” by Nayra Ilic Garcia and Venice Best Screenplay winner “The Ivy,” co-produced by Chile’s Clara Larraín of Clara Films.

    Storyboard Media is among the various delegates from Chile that include award-winning producer Giancarlo Nasi whose Quijote Films produced “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,” Chile’s submission to the Oscars, and who also participates in San Sebastian’s Lau Haizetara documentary co-production forum with “Mariana X BHP.”

    Other Chilean participants in the co-production forum are Araucaria Cine, which brings “Sublime Pact” by Ignacio Juricic, at San Sebastian’s fiction Co-Production Forum; Marianne Mayer-Beckh’s El Otro Film with animated feature “Winnipeg Seeds of Hope” and Axolotl with “Do Not Let Me Die Alone” by Renan Flumian, another Co-Production Forum title.  

    Among the Chilean Works in Progress are “The Neverending Plague” (“La plaga sin fin”), a fantasy fiction film by Cristobal Leon and Joaquin Cociña. The multi-country co-production is led by Chile’s Catalina Vergara of Globo Rojo Films. Another Co-Production Forum contender is archive footage film “El atletismo y el amor” by Alejandra Moffat, also produced by Vergara.

    Baby boomers aren’t just flocking down to sunshine states like Florida to kickstart their retirement careers anymore—they’re booking a one-way ticket overseas for a better quality of life. 

    While the United States lacks a formal retirement visa, many other countries offer dedicated programs for retirees to have more affordable living and a new laid-back lifestyle, which is why it’s no surprise the U.S. didn’t make the cut in the Global Citizen Solutions’ 2025 retirement report. 

    For expats ready for cobblestone views and sipping coffee on a sunny terrace, the new report ranks 44 passive income and retirement visa programs. It also evaluated 20 key indicators grouped into six main categories: visa procedures, citizenship and mobility, economic factors, tax benefits, quality of life, and safety and social integration. Each country received a score out of 100. 

    Many of the top-ranked countries were in Europe and South America. Portugal ranked as the best, followed by Mauritius and Spain.

    “The countries dominating our rankings understand that successful retirement migration isn’t just about letting people in, it’s about helping them thrive,” Patricia Casaburi, CEO of Global Citizen Solutions, tells Fortune. 

    Portugal, Mauritius, and Spain top the list, she said, because they truly support new residents with tools to build a life. “They offer language programs, streamlined healthcare registration, and clear pathways from temporary residence to citizenship,” Casaburi explained. “Countries that treat retirees as temporary visitors rather than future citizens consistently underperform.”

    Portugal 

    Coming in at number one was Portugal, where dual citizenship is allowed. The European country offers citizens a D7 Visa, a type of residency visa designed for people who have a stable passive income—making it a popular option for retirees. 

    What matters most to new international citizens is feeling secure and being able to build a real life in their new country, and Portugal excels at letting boomers build a new life without losing their roots. 

    “[Portugal] has institutional frameworks suggesting it will remain stable for the next 20-30 years of your retirement. Before making the move, research the country’s healthcare system rankings, political stability indices, and infrastructure investments. Visit during different seasons and talk to expat communities who’ve been there for 5+ years,” Casaburi added. 

    A single applicant needs about €870 per month in stable passive income. The processing time takes around 12 months. After the initial residency permit is granted and you’ve lived there for at least 5 years, you can apply to be a permanent citizen. Portugal also taxes its citizens on the income they make inside and outside of the country.

    Mauritius 

    Next at number two was the eastern African country, Mauritius. Retirees can obtain a residence permit by demonstrating a minimum monthly income of $1,500, with processing times typically around three months. 

    The permit allows the main applicant to include their spouse or legal partner, as well as dependent children, making it a family-friendly option. Retirees benefit from a territorial tax system, meaning foreign-sourced income is not taxed, and there are no wealth or inheritance taxes. After six years of residency, retirees become eligible to apply for citizenship, and dual citizenship is permitted. 

    Spain 

    Number three was Spain. The Spanish non-lucrative visa (NLV) is designed for non-EU citizens who wish to live in Spain without engaging in any work. To qualify, applicants should have a stable income of at least €2,400 per month. 

    Processing for a visa typically takes around three months. Once approved, residents are subject to Spain’s worldwide tax system and potential inheritance tax. The NLV provides a pathway to Spanish citizenship after 10 years of legal residence, or just 2 years for citizens of select Latin American and other historically connected countries. Dual citizenship is allowed, depending on the laws of the applicant’s country of origin.

    Uruguay 

    Coming in at number four was the South American country Uruguay, where residents need an income requirement of $2,000 of stable passive income a month. Processing time takes about one month. The main applicant can include spouse or legal partner, minor children and dependent adult children, there are no imposed taxes on foreign-sourced income, and no wealth and inheritance tax. Dual citizenship is allowed and the path to citizenship takes about 5 years. 

    Austria 

    Ending the top five was Austria. The country offers an independent residence permit as a pathway for people who can prove they have an income to support themselves while abroad. Processing time takes about 4 months and the main applicant could include a spouse, legal partner and minor children. For tax benefits, they have a worldwide tax system—meaning the country taxes its citizens on all their income, regardless of where it was earned—and no inheritance tax. The path to citizenship is 10 years, with dual citizenship allowed.

    Hispanic Heritage Month puts diversity and culture at the forefront

    Huge celebrations across the U.S. are expected to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual tradition that showcases the awe-inspiring diversity and culture of Hispanic people.

    Celebrated each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the month is a chance for many in the U.S. to learn about and celebrate the contributions of Hispanics, the country’s fastest-growing racial or ethnic minority, according to the census. The group includes people whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

    There are more than 65 million people identified as ethnically Hispanic in the U.S., according to the latest census estimates.

    Heritage week embraces the sprawling histories of Latinos

    Before there was National Hispanic Heritage Month, there was Hispanic Heritage Week, which was created through legislation sponsored by Mexican American U.S. Rep. Edward R. Roybal of Los Angeles and signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

    The weeklong commemoration was expanded to a month two decades later, with legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

    “It was clustered around big celebrations for the community,” Alberto Lammers, director of communications at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute said. “It became a chance for people to know Hispanic cultures, for Latinos to get to know a community better and for the American public to understand a little better the long history of Latinos in the U.S.”

    The month is a way for Hispanics to showcase their diversity and culture with the support of the government, said Rachel Gonzalez-Martin, an associate professor of Mexican American and Latino Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

    Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point to coincide with the anniversary of “El Grito de Dolores,” or the “Cry of Dolores,” which was issued in 1810 from a town in central Mexico that launched that country’s war for independence from Spain.

    The Central American nations of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate their independence on Sept. 15, and Mexico marks its national day on Sept. 16, the day after the cry for independence.

    Also during National Hispanic Heritage Month, the South American nation of Chile observes its independence day on Sept. 18. Indigenous Peoples’ Day, previously known as Columbus Day, is observed in the U.S. on the second Monday of October.

    Over the past decade, the month has grown due to the larger Latino consumer base in the U.S., Gonzalez-Martin said. Gonzalez-Martin said visible support from the federal government, including celebrations at the White House, has also made it easier for Hispanics to celebrate.

    “Hispanic Heritage Month was a way in which to be Hispanic and Latino but with official blessing,” Gonzalez-Martin said. “It was a recognition of belonging and that became really powerful.”

    The four-week period is about honoring the way Hispanic populations have shaped the U.S. in the past and present, Lammers said.

    “It gives us a chance to acknowledge how Latinos have been part of this nation for so many centuries,” Lammers said. “I think that’s what is great about this. It has allowed us to really dig deeper and a chance to tell our stories.”

    Not everyone who is Hispanic uses that label

    Hispanic was a term coined by the federal government for people descended from Spanish-speaking cultures. But for some, the label has a connotation of political conservatism and emphasizes a connection to Spain. It sometimes gets mistakenly interchanged with “Latino” or “Latinx.”

    For some, Latino reflects their ties to Latin America. So some celebrations are referred to as Latinx or Latin Heritage Month.

    Latin Americans are not a monolith. There are several identifiers for Latin Americans, depending largely on personal preference. Mexican Americans who grew up during the 1960s Civil Rights era may identify as Chicano. Others may go by their family’s nation of origin such as Colombian American or Salvadoran American.

    Each culture has unique differences when it comes to music, food, art and other cultural touchstones.

    Celebrations are planned throughout the month

    From California to Florida, there will be no shortage of festivities. The celebrations tout traditional Latin foods and entertainment including, mariachi bands, folklórico and salsa lessons. The intent is to showcase the culture of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other Latin countries.

    Events highlighting Hispanic culture include a quinceañera fashion show in Dallas on Sept. 14, the New York Latino Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 17-22, and the Viva Tampa Bay Hispanic Heritage Festival on Sept. 28-29.

    The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., is offering a slate of activities elevating Hispanic heritage, including a celebration of the life of Celia Cruz and exhibits of art made in Mexico.

    SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Arms raised high. Banners denouncing the war in Gaza. Crowds united in song and wrapped in keffiyehs, the black-and-white checkered scarves that have become a badge of Palestinian identity.

    It could have been any other pro-Palestinian rally erupting over the Israel-Hamas war if it weren’t for the fact that these thousands of protesters were actually soccer fans at a league match in Santiago, the capital of Chile.

    Although the players darting across the field had names like José and Antonio and grew up in a Spanish-speaking South American nation, their fervor for the Palestinian cause and red, white, black and green-colored jerseys underscored how Chile’s storied soccer club serves as an entry point for the world’s largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East to connect with an ancestral home thousands of miles away.

    “It’s more than just a club, it takes you into the history of the Palestinians,” said Bryan Carrasco, captain of Chile’s legendary Club Deportivo Palestino.

    As the bloodiest war in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rages in the Gaza Strip, the club’s electric game atmosphere, viewing parties and pre-match political stunts have increasingly tapped into a sense of collective Palestinian grief in this new era of war and displacement.

    “We’re united in the face of the war,” said Diego Khamis, director of the country’s Palestinian community. “It’s daily suffering.”

    In a sport where authorities penalize athletes for flaunting political positions, particularly on such explosive issues as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Club Palestino is an unabashed exception that wears its pro-Palestinian politics on its sleeve — and on its torso, stadium seats and anywhere else it can find.

    The club’s brazen gestures have caused offense before. Chile’s Football Federation fined the club in 2014 after the number “1” on the back of their shirts was shaped as a map of Palestine before Israel’s creation in 1948.

    But players’ fierce pride in their Palestinian identity has otherwise caused little controversy in this country of 19 million, home to 500,000 ethnic Palestinians.

    “It’s our roots and it feels like home,” said Jaime Barakat, a Palestino fan and shawarma vendor.

    Leftist President Gabriel Boric, who called Israel a “genocidal, murderous state” on the campaign trail in 2021, has harshly criticized Israel’s campaign in Gaza. His government recalled the Israeli ambassador and joined South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in the International Court of Justice — allegations that Israel denies.

    Israel has pushed back, castigating Chile for what it sees as an insufficient response to Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200 people and led to the abduction of 250 others.

    The country’s small Jewish population of 16,000 is unsettled. “Boric, who frequently speaks of peace, has imported the Middle East conflict to Chile,” the Jewish Community of Chile said in a statement.

    Chile’s Palestinians say the Mideast conflict was imported decades before Boric, spurring waves of displacement that forged the surprising history of Arab immigration to this Pacific coast nation from the late 1800s as the Ottoman Empire crumbled and the Zionist movement took root.

    In 1920, the League of Nations approved the British Mandate of Palestine, unleashing tensions over Britain’s Balfour Declaration that promised historic Palestine as a homeland for the Jewish people. More Palestinians crossed the Atlantic and braved treks across the Andes by mule to reach far-flung Chile. That same year, Club Palestino was created by a group of Palestinian soccer enthusiasts who gathered one winter day in Chile’s southern city of Osorno.

    “My father told me they came here because there were more possibilities,” said 90-year-old Juan Sabaj Dhimes in Patronato, a historically Palestinian neighborhood in the capital, with its coffee shops and hookah bars splashed in the colors of the Palestinian national flag and plastered with Palestino club crests.

    Chile’s Palestinian community exploded after the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation — in which more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were pushed from their homes in what Arabs call the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” and dispersed all over the world.

    Chile was then an upwardly mobile nation among poorer neighbors seeking to attract migrants to populate the country. Palestinian descendants say the arid land, coastal desert and fresh figs and olives conjured an earlier generation’s nostalgia for historic Palestine.

    “The climate is one of the things that most captivated the Palestinians who arrived,” said Mauricio Abu-Ghosh, former president of Chile’s Palestinian Federation.

    The scrappy soccer club went professional in 1947, becoming the pride of the community. Rocketing to Chile’s top division and clinching five official titles, its appeal soon stretched to the Middle East, where the descendants of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan still congregate in camps and cafes to catch Palestino matches broadcast by satellite network Al Jazeera.

    The team’s political message also won supporters across Chile — a soccer-crazed country with a spirit of social activism and an ex-protest leader as president — and beyond.

    Despite of being a small soccer club, with an average of only about 2,000 spectators per game, Deportivo Palestino — winner of five official titles and a regular fixture in continental tournaments — is the third most followed Chilean club on Instagram, with more than 741,000 followers, only behind eternal rivals Universidad de Chile (791,000) and Colo-Colo (2.3 million).

    “They tell us about the violence suffered by their people,” said 20-year-old Chilean fan Luis Torres at Palestino’s home stadium in Santiago. “It makes me angry, sad, so we’re here to bring a bit of joy.”

    Joy has been harder to come by in the Palestinian diaspora since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack triggered Israel’s bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has killed over 40,000 Palestinians and spawned a humanitarian catastrophe.

    Palestinians streaming out of church in Patronato on a recent Sunday said they had prayed for the safety of their families in Gaza. “We all have cousins, siblings, grandparents who still live there,” said Khamis.

    The war has wrenched Palestino, forcing the club’s training school in Gaza to shut down and disrupting programs it supports across the occupied West Bank.

    But within Chile it has breathed new life into players and fans. Before kickoff, the team now rushes the pitch clad in keffiyehs, brandishing anti-war banners and taking a knee.

    In May the team abandoned one little pre-match ritual of emerging on the field holding hands with child mascots. Instead, players extended their arms to the side, grasping at empty space.

    It was a subtle gesture — a tribute to the “invisible children” killed in Gaza, the team later explained — that could have been lost entirely on ordinary soccer fans.

    This crowd, however, went wild. ___

    NEW YORK (AP) — A tiny South American deer that will weigh only as much as a watermelon when fully grown is making its debut at the Queens Zoo in New York City.

    The southern pudu fawn weighed just 2 pounds (just under 1 kilo) when it was born June 21, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs New York City’s zoos, said in a news release Thursday. It is expected to weigh 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kilograms) in adulthood.

    The southern pudu, one of the world’s smallest deer species, is listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It is native to Chile and Argentina, where its population is decreasing because of factors including development and invasive species.

    The Queens Zoo breeds southern pudus in collaboration with other zoos in an effort to maintain genetically diverse populations, the conservation society said. Eight pudu fawns have been born there since 2005.

    The newborn fawn will share a Queens Zoo habitat with its parents. There are two more pudus at the conservation society’s Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn.

    Some like it hot – and some like it hotter, still.

    When it comes to the world’s best spicy dishes, we have some of the world’s hottest peppers to thank, along with incredible layers of flavor and a long, spice-loving human history.

    “Spicy food, or at least spiced foods, clearly predates the idea of countries and their cuisine by a very, very long time,” says Indian author Saurav Dutt, who is writing a book about the spiciest foods on the Indian subcontinent.

    “Every spicy ingredient has a wild ancestor,” he says. “Ginger, horseradish, mustard, chiles and so on have predecessors which led to their domestication.”

    Hunter-gatherer groups historically made use of various wild ingredients to flavor their foods, Dutt says, and there are many ingredients all over the world that can lend a spicy taste to a dish or stand on their own.

    Peppers – a headliner for heat – are rated on the Scoville Heat Units scale, which measures capsaicin and other active components of chile peppers. By that measure, the Carolina Reaper is among the hottest in the world, while habaneros, Scotch bonnets and bird’s eye chiles drop down a few rungs on the mop-your-brow scale.

    Redolent with ghost peppers, Scotch bonnets, serranos, chiltepin peppers, mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorns and more, the following spicy dishes from around the world bring the heat in the most delicious way.

    Ata rodo – Scotch bonnet pepper – brings the fire to Nigeria’s famous spicy soup. Egusi is made by pounding the seeds from the egusi melon, an indigenous West African fruit that’s related to the watermelon.

    In addition to being protein-packed, the melon’s seeds serve to thicken and add texture and flavor to the soup’s mix of meat, seafood and leafy vegetables. Pounded yams are often served alongside this dish, helping to temper the scorch of the Scotch bonnets.

    “The joy of this dish is not only the delightful warming ingredients of cinnamon, cloves, star anise and, of course, the Sichuan peppercorns, but the fact that you can cook exactly what you like in the bubbling spicy broth,” says British-born Chinese chef Kwoklyn Wan, author of “The Complete Chinese Takeout Cookbook.”

    Duck, seafood, chicken, pork, lamb and seasonal vegetables are all fair game for tossing into the pot to simmer in a mouth-numbing broth made with Sichuan peppercorns and dried Sichuan peppers for serious kick (the dipping sauce served on the side often has chile paste, too).

    Also known as Chongqing hot pot, the dish is said to have originated as a popular food among Yangtze River boatmen. It’s enjoyed by those who can handle its heat all over China, not to mention elsewhere around the world.

    Som tam, Thailand

    A green papaya salad with a fiery kick.

    From northeastern Thailand’s spice-loving Isaan province, this fresh and fiery salad is a staple dish at Thai restaurants around the world and is also popular in neighboring Laos.

    Som tam turns to green (unripe) papaya for its main ingredient, which is usually julienned or shredded for the salad. The papaya is then tossed with long beans or green beans and a mix of flavorful Asian essentials that include tamarind juice, dried shrimp, fish sauce and sugar cane paste, among other ingredients. Thai chiles, also called bird’s eye chiles, give the salad its requisite kick.

    Piri-piri chicken, Mozambique and Angola

    The Portuguese introduced this spicy dish also known as peri-peri chicken into Angola and Mozambique as far back as the 15th century, when they mixed African chiles with European ingredients (piri-piri means “pepper pepper” in Swahili). And it’s the perky red pepper of the same name that brings the spiciness to this complex, layered and delicious dish.

    Piri-piri chicken’s poultry cuts are marinated in chiles, olive oil, lemon, garlic and herbs such as basil and oregano for a fiery flavor that blends salty, sour and sweet. The dish is also popular in Namibia and South Africa, where it’s often found on the menu in Portuguese restaurants.

    The glossy red hues dancing on a plate of this popular pork dish, a version of which hails from Mao Zedong’s home province, give a hint about the mouth experience to come. The dish was apparently a favorite of the communist leader, who requested his chefs in Beijing prepare it for him.

    Chairman Mao’s braised pork belly – called Mao shi hong shao rou in China – is often served as the main dish for sharing at a family table and is made by braising chunks of pork belly with soy sauce, dried chiles and spices.

    “It is a very delicious and moreish dish due to the caramelized sugar and dark soy sauce being reduced and all the aromatics (that coat the pork belly),” wrote BBC “Best Home Cook” winner Suzie Lee, author of “Simply Chinese,” in an email to CNN Travel.

    Scotch bonnet peppers give jerk chicken its heat.

    Jamaica’s favorite pepper is the Scotch bonnet, beloved not just for its spiciness but for its aroma, colors and flavor, too, says Mark Harvey, content creator and podcaster at Two On An Island, who was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica.

    “For Jamaicans, the degree of spiciness starts at medium for children and goes up to purple hot,” he says, explaining that the peppers come in green, orange, red and purple hues, growing increasingly spicy in that order.

    Scotch bonnets star in several of the island’s iconic dishes, including escovitch fish, pepper pot soup and curry goat. But you might recognize them most from the ubiquitous jerk chicken and pork smoking roadside everywhere from Montego Bay to Boston Bay, where meat prepared with the peppery marinade is cooked the traditional way, atop coals from pimento tree wood (the tree’s allspice berries are also used in the jerk marinade).

    Popular on the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok, in particular, this whole chicken dish is stuffed with an intensely aromatic spice paste (betutu) that usually includes a mashup of fresh hot chile peppers, galangal (a root related to ginger), candlenuts, shallots, garlic, turmeric and shrimp paste, among other ingredients.

    The chicken is then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed, bringing the aromatics out all the more and flavoring the chicken to the max. Best shared, ayam betutu is often presented at religious ceremonies in Bali, but you’ll find it at restaurants specializing in it throughout the islands, too.

    Spicy wings are an American sports bar staple.

    Beer and buffalo chicken wings are as American as, well, hamburgers. And if you’re not eating them alongside a pile of celery sticks and a ramekin of dunking sauce – traditionally blue cheese dip, but ranch works, too – you’re missing half the picture.

    A sports bar staple at chain restaurants such as Buffalo Wild Wings and more refined outposts, too, from Alaska to Maine, “wings” are actually made up of the wing parts called drumettes and wingettes, which have the most meat.

    Buffalo wings, said to have been invented in a bar in Buffalo, New York, in 1964, are among the spiciest preparations (other popular variations include teriyaki wings and honey garlic wings). Make them as fiery as you like using a sauce that includes cayenne pepper, butter, vinegar, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce.

    A relative of ceviche, this Mexican dish traditionally gets its fire from chiltepín peppers.

    Similar to ceviche but with more bite, this raw marinated shrimp dish from the western Mexican state of Sinaloa (and a staple along the Baja Peninsula, too) tastes as good as it looks.

    Tiny but mighty chiltepín peppers (they look like bright little berries), grown throughout the United States and Mexico, make the spicy magic happen in shrimp aguachiles, which means “pepper water.” If you can’t find those, serrano and jalapeño peppers also do the trick.

    Marinate the raw shrimp with ingredients including lime juice, cilantro, red onion and cucumber and enjoy with crispy tostadas.

    Pad ka prao, Thailand

    A go-to dish when you want something satisfying – but with kick – pad ka prao is a mealtime staple in Thailand, where you’ll find it on offer at street-side stalls and restaurants everywhere from Bangkok to the islands.

    Considered the Thai equivalent of a sandwich or a burger, the dish is a mix of ground pork, spicy Thai chile peppers and holy basil and can be ordered as spicy as you like. Many locals believe it’s best topped with a fried egg with a runny yolk.

    Beef rendang, Indonesia and Malaysia

    A fiery favorite that originated in West Sumatra, versions of beef rendang are also enjoyed in Indonesia’s neighboring countries, including Malaysia and Brunei, as well as the Philippines.

    This flavorful dry curry dish calls on kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk, star anise and red chile, among other spices, to deliver its complexity. It’s often presented to guests and served during festive events.

    The fermented cabbage dish kimchi might be the spicy Korean dish that first comes to mind, but when you want some extra kick, dakdoritang does the trick.

    Comfort food to the max, the chicken stew doubles down on its spiciness with liberal doses of gochugaru (Korean chile powder) and gochujang (Korean chile paste) mixed with rice wine, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and sesame oil in a braising sauce that packs the bone-in chicken pieces with flavor. It’s often served with carrots, onions and potatoes.

    Phaal Curry, Birmingham, England (via Bangladesh)

    This tomato-based British-Asian curry invented in Birmingham, England, curry houses by British Bangladeshi restaurateurs is thought to be one of the spiciest curries in the world.

    “Typically the sauce has a tomato base with ginger, fennel seeds and copious amounts of chile, habanero or Scotch bonnet, peppers,” says Indian author Saurav Dutt.

    As many as 10 pepper types may find their way into phaal curry, he says, including bird’s eye chiles and the bhut jolokia (also known as the ghost pepper, it’s one of the world’s hottest peppers). Even hotter than vindaloo, this dish will absolutely light your mouth up.

    This classic Roman pasta dish’s name gives you an idea of what to expect. “Arrabbiata” means “angry” in Italian. And penne all’arrabbiata pairs the relatively plain penne pasta with fiery flavors from the sauce (sugo all’arrabbiata) in which it’s slathered.

    “The peperoncino (red chile pepper) is what makes this sauce ‘angry’ (arrabbiata) or spicy,” Chris MacLean of Italy-based Open Tuesday Wines said via email.

    To tame the angry peppers in this garlic and tomato-based dish with a good glass of red wine, MacLean says to pair penne all’arrabbiata with a Cesanese, also from Rome’s Lazio region, with its crisp fruit and light tannins.

    “A wine that’s heavy in oak or alcohol would turn up the heat (in the dish) in your mouth and render the wine tasteless,” he warns.

    Chicken is simmered with roasted spices and coconut in this flavorful dish.

    “There’s a saying in South India that you are lucky to ‘eat like a Chettiar,’ ” says Dutt, referring to the Tamil-speaking community in India’s southern Tamil Nadu state credited with creating this spicy dish.

    “Like this chicken dish, the traditional Chettinad dishes mostly used locally sourced spices like star anise, pepper, kalpasi (stone flower) and marati mokku (dried flower pods),” he says.

    The chicken pieces are simmered in a medley of roasted spices and coconut, and it is traditionally served with steamed rice or the thin South Indian pancakes called dosa, fried chapati or naan.

    This Ethiopian dish leans on the fiery berbere spice blend.

    The fiery Ethiopian spice blend called berbere – aromatic with chile peppers, basil, cardamom, garlic and ginger – is instrumental to the flavor chorus that’s doro wat, Ethiopia’s much-loved spicy chicken stew.

    Topped with boiled eggs, the dish almost always finds a place at the table during weddings, religious holidays and other special occasions and family gatherings. If you’re invited to try it in Ethiopia at such an event, consider yourself very lucky indeed.

    Mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorns bring the X-factor to this popular dish from China’s Sichuan province, which mixes chunks of silken tofu with ground meat (pork or beef) and a spicy fermented bean paste called doubanjiang.

    Mapo tofu’s fiery red color might as well be a warning to the uninitiated – Sichuan cuisine’s defining flavor, málà, has a numbing effect on the mouth called paresthesia that people tend to love or hate.

    A Portuguese-influenced dish from India’s southwestern state of Goa, vindaloo was not originally meant to be spicy, says Dutt. “It originally contained pork, potatoes (aloo) and vinegar (vin), giving you the name,” he says.

    But when the dish was exported to curry houses in the United Kingdom that were mostly run by Muslim Bangladeshi chefs, Dutt says, pork was replaced with beef, chicken or lamb and the dish evolved into a spicier hot curry.

    Ghost pepper flakes and Scotch bonnet peppers are among the peppers giving the dish its scorching taste. But in Goa, you can still find versions of the dish that swing more on the side of milder spices such as cinnamon and cardamom.

    Senegalese cooks are also big fans of Scotch bonnet peppers, named for their resemblance to the Scottish tam o’ shanter hat. And their spice-giving goodness is deployed liberally in one of the West African country’s favorite dishes, the spicy tomato and peanut or groundnut-based stew called mafé.

    Usually made with beef, lamb or chicken, the stew is made even heartier with potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables for one filling feed. Mafé is popular in other West African countries, too, including Mali and Gambia, and it can also be prepared without meat.

    Synonymous with watching the Super Bowl or hunkering down on a cold night, chili is a spicy American staple where you can opt to ratchet up the heat as much as you like.

    There are basically two pure forms of American chili – with or without beans (usually red kidney beans) – says Chef Julian Gonzalez of Sawmill Market in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In Texas, he explains, chili traditionally doesn’t have beans, which puts the focus on the spices and chiles used to flavor it, and he goes with that approach himself.

    “Traditionally chili is seasoned with chili powder, cumin and paprika,” Gonzalez says. From there, you can use other ingredients to make your recipe unique. Adding cayenne pepper is one way to turn up the heat.

    At his restaurant Red & Green, which serves New Mexican cuisine, Gonzalez’s green chile stew, made with pork and no beans, is seasoned with a mix of roasted green New Mexican hatch chiles (half mild and half with heat), onion and garlic powder.

    A team of scientists investigating a subtle “bump on top of the ocean” off South America discovered a hidden mountain that stands 1.5 miles high, researchers say.

    It’s one of four dead volcanoes found in January by the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too) in the South Pacific from Costa Rica to Chile, according to a news release.

    The seamounts range from 5,220 to 8,796 feet high and reign over a mysterious submerged world that is largely unmapped, experts say.

    They were found as the crew investigated “gravity anomalies” that showed up on mapping technology as “an almost imperceptible bump on top of the ocean.”

    “Examining gravity anomalies is a fancy way of saying we looked for bumps on a map, and when we did, we located these very large seamounts,” hydrographic expert John Fulmer said in the release.

    Images created by the scientists show the rugged 1.5-mile tall seamount covers about 280 square miles and sits 3,772 feet below the surface, the institute says.

    The other three seamounts range from a classic cone-shaped volcano to something similar to the flat-topped Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, photos show.

    Seamounts are submerged mountains largely believed to be “remnants of extinct volcanoes,” according to NOAA Ocean Exploration. To be classified as a seamount, the summits must tower at least 3,300 above the surrounding seafloor.

    The towers are known to host an abundance of marine life, which makes them of interest to scientists.

    “Typically, they are cone shaped, but often have other prominent features such as craters and linear ridges and some, called guyots, have large, flat summits,” NOAA says.

    “Based on data … the number of seamounts that are at least 1,000 meters high is thought to be greater than 100,000. Despite their abundance, however, less than one-tenth of a percent of the seamounts in the world have been explored.”

    The Schmidt Ocean Institute has discovered 29 seamounts, hills, and trenches while mapping “about 1.5 million square kilometers” of seafloor, officials say.

    A strange new type of star referred to by scientists as an “old smoker” has been discovered after a years-long astronomical study. 

    According to four different studies recently published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, these recently discovered stellar objects are essentially really large and very old stars that emit puffs of what appears to be smoke and dust after many decades of inactivity. 

    These stars were discovered using a powerful giant telescope located deep in the mountains of Chile. Lead author of one study and co-author of the other three, Phillip Lucas, said that thus far, scientists are not completely sure what creates this effect in the old smoker stars. 

    “Everything we have been able to learn about them suggests that this is a case of stars throwing off puffs of smoke—for reasons that we don’t fully understand,” Lucas said. “We weren’t sure if these stars were protostars starting an eruption, or recovering from a dip in brightness caused by a disc or shell of dust in front of the star — or if they were older giant stars throwing off matter in the late stages of their life,” Lucas said

    Originally the studies were focused at finding newborn stars, oftentimes surrounded by dust and gasses making them hard to see. This is why the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope) in Chile, capable of seeing infrared light, was used to scan the skies for the stars other telescopes would not be able to see. As Dr. Zhen Guo, Fondecyt Postdoc Fellow at the University of Valparaiso in Chile and lead author of two studies explained, these newborn stars often help to form new solar systems over time. 

    “Our main aim was to find rarely-seen newborn stars, also called protostars, while they are undergoing a great outburst that can last for months, years, or even decades,” Guo said. “These outbursts happen in the slowly spinning disc of matter that is forming a new solar system. They help the newborn star in the middle to grow, but make it harder for planets to form. We don’t yet understand why the discs become unstable like this,” Guo said.

    The old smoker stars are a kind of red giant. Red giants are stars which have essentially expired, that is, they’ve run out of hydrogen fuel and have “died” in a sense. This often causes violent energy outbursts from the star for a while. Our own sun will go through this one day in the far off future, swallowing several of the inner planets in the course of its death according to NASA, though the fate of the Earth remains relatively unclear when this happens. Luckily, it’ll be several billion years before this occurs so it will more than likely be somebody else’s problem by then.  

    The team of scientists involved with these studies found several red giants, 21 to be exact, that appeared to be a bit different than those found in the past. They chose seven of these stars to focus on and noticed unusual characteristics that puzzled them, most noticeably the smoke and dust they appeared to exert which is how they received the moniker ‘old smoker.’ 

    “These elderly stars sit quietly for years or decades and then puff out clouds of smoke in a totally unexpected way,” said Dante Minniti, a professor in the department of physics at Andrés Bello University in Chile and coauthor on three of the studies, in a press release “They look very dim and red for several years, to the point that sometimes we can’t see them at all.”

    Most of the stars the team studied were found near the center or the nucleus if you will of the Milky Way Galaxy, known as the innermost nuclear disc. Lucas explained that these newly discovered stars could potentially play a role in the way elements are distributed across the galaxies.

    “Matter ejected from old stars plays a key role in the life cycle of the elements, helping to form the next generation of stars and planets,” Lucas said. “This was thought to occur mainly in a well-studied type of star called a Mira variable. However, the discovery of a new type of star that throws off matter could have wider significance for the spread of heavy elements in the Nuclear Disc and metal-rich regions of other galaxies.”

    Sebastián Piñera, the billionaire who brought Chile’s political right wing out from the shadow of former dictator Augusto Pinochet to win two separate terms as president, died in a helicopter crash in the south of the country. He was 74.

    The helicopter went down in a lake in the Region de Los Lagos, Interior Minister Carolina Toha told a press conference on Tuesday. Three people were injured and managed to swim to the shore, while Piñera was trapped in the wreckage. His body was later recovered by rescue services.

    “So goes the most important and successful right-wing leader in the history of Chile,” Mauricio Morales, a professor of political science at Chile’s Universidad de Talca, wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “His governments left more lights than shadows.”

    Piñera became president in 2010 and again in 2018, overseeing two periods of growth, though the second was overshadowed by the worst social unrest in a generation that paralyzed much of the country.

    One key to Piñera’s early political success was distancing his right-wing coalition from Pinochet’s 17-year dictatorship, which ended in 1990, enabling it to unseat the center-left parties that dominated the country for 20 years. One of the few on the right who voted against Pinochet in a 1988 plebiscite, Piñera helped mold a new right wing that focused more on economic liberalism than Catholic conservatism and authoritarianism.

    “Piñera was a controversial figure,” said Kenneth Bunker, a professor at Universidad San Sebastian in Santiago. “He was a figure that even within his own sector never had broad support. For the conservative right, he was disruptive.”

    Still, many voters just backed him for his apparent economic Midas touch, hoping it would rub off on the country in general.

    Economic growth averaged 5.4% during his first term as the country was flooded with revenue from soaring copper prices. His second term was less successful, with expansion averaging 3%. The nation was also convulsed by street protests over inequality in late 2019 that only ended with the arrival of the Covid pandemic.

    Condolences 

    Regional leaders including Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Argentina’s Javier Milei sent their condolences.

    “I will always value ex-President Piñera’s commitment to our country and its democracy, as well as his tireless work and service for the nation,” former president and political opponent Michelle Bachelet said in a statement.

    President Gabriel Boric said Piñera would receive a state funeral and declared three days of national mourning.

    “He was a democrat from the first hour and genuinely looked for what he believed was best for the country,” Boric said in televised comments. 

    Piñera may best be remembered on the international scene for overseeing the rescue of 33 workers trapped in a copper mine in northern Chile for 69 days. Locally, he will also be recalled for managing the rebuilding efforts after a devastating earthquake in 2010. An aftershock of that quake had interrupted his inauguration ceremony.

    Business empire

    Born Dec. 1, 1949, in Santiago, Piñera attended the Catholic University of Chile, studied economics at Harvard University and then returned to Chile to teach at a university.

    Over the subsequent decades he became a billionaire. At one time, he owned 27% of the airline LAN Chile—now Latam Airlines—plus 90% of the Chilevision television station and 13% of the Colo Colo soccer club. He sold those holdings before the 2009 presidential campaign.

    By the time he took office for a second time in 2018, most of his family’s wealth was in blind trusts.

    Still, his business career was marked by several controversies. In 1982, while he was chief executive at Banco de Talca, he was accused of violating the nation’s banking laws and disappeared for 24 days. The Supreme Court later acquitted him of the charges. In 2007, Piñera was fined $700,000 for insider trading. He didn’t appeal.

    Piñera is survived by his wife, Cecilia Morel, and their four children.

    Sebastián Piñera, a two-time former president of Chile, died Tuesday in a helicopter accident. He was 74.

    Chile Interior Minister Carolina Tohá confirmed the death of the former president. No further details were immediately released about the cause of the accident.

    Chilean media Tuesday afternoon shared a statement published by Piñera’s office confirming his death. 

    “During the afternoon of this Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the former president suffered an aerial crash in the Los Ríos Region,” the statement said, adding, “We appreciate the massive expressions of affection and concern that we have received during these bitter hours.”

    Piñera served as president from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2018 to 2022. He led the South American nation during devastating natural disasters, including the fallout of an earthquake and a tsunami.

    He also governed during the coronavirus pandemic and placed Chile among the top five countries for vaccination rates for the illness.

    His legacy is marred by violent police repression in October 2019 against protesters who were demonstrating against the country’s education, health and pension systems.

    Tens of thousands of protesters swarmed Chile’s capital during the 2019 protests, setting up fiery barricades and clashing with riot police after an apology and promises of reform from Piñera failed to calm the unrest that had led to at least 18 deaths.

    The movement started with anger at a small rise in subway fares, but blew up into protests demanding improvements in education, health care and wages in one of Latin America’s wealthiest, but most unequal nations.

    The social unrest ultimately led to two attempts to update the constitution inherited from the military government, but both have failed.

    Piñera was the owner of the fifth largest fortune in Chile, estimated at some $3 billion. He worked as an academic in several universities for almost 20 years and as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.

    As a businessman in the 1970s through the 1990s, he worked in a variety of industries, including real estate. He held shares in major airlines and telecommunication, real estate and electricity companies. He also created one of the largest credit card companies in the country. In 2009, he handed over the management of his businesses to others.

    He entered politics representing the center-right. However, when he served as an independent senator, he voted against extending the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).

    He ran three times for president of Chile. In 2006, he lost to socialist Michelle Bachelet; then in 2010 he defeated former President Eduardo Frei. Four years later, in 2018, he won a second four-year term after defeating a leftist independent.

    Twelve days before the beginning of his first term, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami claimed the lives of 525 people and devastated the infrastructure of central-southern Chile.

    Piñera’s government agenda was postponed in order to take on emergency reconstruction. In 2010, he also led the unprecedented rescue of 33 miners trapped for 69 days at the bottom of a mine, which captured the world’s attention.

    Santiago, Chile — Firefighters wrestled Sunday with massive forest fires that broke out in central Chile two days earlier, as officials extended curfews in cities most heavily affected by the blazes and said at least 112 people had been killed.

    The Interior Ministry said late Sunday there were 40 blazes still burning around the country, Agence-France Presse reported.

    The fires burned with the highest intensity around the city of Viña del Mar, where a famous botanical garden founded in 1931 was destroyed by the flames Sunday. At least 1,600 people were left without homes.

    Several neighborhoods on the eastern edge of Viña del Mar were devoured by flames and smoke, trapping some people in their homes. Officials said 200 people were reported missing in Viña del Mar and the surrounding area. The city of 300,000 people is a popular beach resort and also hosts a well-known music festival during the southern hemisphere’s summer.

    Abraham Mardones, a welder, evacuated his burning home in Vina del Mar Friday. He told AFP he barely got out on time as the flames raced over a hillside and across several blocks.

    “We looked out again and the fire was already on our walls. It took only 10 minutes. The entire hill burned,” he said, adding that he found several neighbors who had perished when he went back on Sunday.

    On Sunday morning, Chilean President Gabriel Boric visited the town of Quilpé, which was also heavily affected by the fires and reported that 64 people had been killed. Late Sunday, Chile’s Forensic Medicine Service updated the confirmed death toll to 112 people.

    Boric said the death toll could rise as rescue workers search through homes that have collapsed. Some of those arriving in hospitals were also in critical condition.

    Rodrigo Mundaca, the governor of the Valparaiso region, where Viña del Mar and other affected cities are located, said Sunday he believed some of the fires could have been intentionally caused, echoing a theory that had also been mentioned Saturday by Boric.

    “These fires began in four points that lit up simultaneously,” Mundaca said. “As authorities we will have to work rigorously to find who is responsible.”

    The fires around Viña del Mar began in mountainous forested areas that are hard to reach. But they moved into densely populated neighborhoods on the city’s periphery despite efforts by Chilean authorities to slow down the flames.

    On Saturday, Boric said unusually high temperatures, low humidity and high wind speeds were making it difficult to control the wildfires in central Chile, which have already burned through 30 square miles of forest and urban areas.

    Boric flew over some of the areas burned by the fires Sunday and visited a school that has been turned into a shelter for the displaced. He said that a presidential vacation home on the shores of Viña del Mar that is surrounded by large gardens would be temporarily converted into a leisure center for the children of families affected by the fires.

    The president declared two days of national mourning.

    “All of Chile is suffering” Boric said. “But we will stand up once again.”

    Officials asked people in areas affected by the fires to evacuate their homes as quickly as possible, while those farther from the fires were told to stay home in order to facilitate the transit of fire engines and ambulances.

    Curfews were declared in Viña del Mar and the neighboring cities of Quilpé and Villa Alemana as part of an effort to prevent looting.

    The fires broke out during a week of record high temperatures in central Chile. Over the past two months, the El Niño weather pattern has caused droughts and high temperatures in western South America that have also increased the risk of forest fires.
