  • Donald Glover Suffered a Stroke Last Year

    [ad_1]

In 2024, Donald Glover was hospitalized following a Childish Gambino show in New Orleans, Louisiana. Last night (November 22), during his first performance since then, Glover revealed that he had suffered from a stroke. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well,” he told the crowd at Tyler, the Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw festival. At the time, Glover called off his next show in Houston, Texas, and went to a hospital in the city, where he was diagnosed.

Glover continued, “The first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, like, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx.’ That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’” He went on to describe a spate of other health problems he’d experienced over the last year, including a broken foot and a hole in his heart, both of which required surgery.

“They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You should be living your life how you want. If we have to do this again, it can only get better,” Glover reflected. Watch his full Camp Flog Gnaw set below.

After his hospitalization, Glover was forced to cancel the rest of his world tour in support of 2024’s Bando Stone and the New World. He has described the album as his last under the Childish Gambino moniker.

Donald Glover Battles for Survival in ‘Bando Stone & The New World’ Movie Trailer

    [ad_1]

Donald Glover as both rapper and actor comically battles for his life in a post-apocalyptic world in the trailer for Bando Stone & The New World, his latest movie.

Actor-writer-producer Glover, in the role of Bando Stone, has to outrun gigantic animals and sci-fi lasers in a tropical Jurassic Island-like setting in the teaser trailer for the film that he directed and stars in, while his alter ego Childish Gambino produced the soundtrack.

The former pop star Bando Stone, hardly battle-hardened to fend off bizarre sci-fi monsters, pairs up with a fellow survivor played by Jessica Allain, and her son. Asked at one point in the trailer if he can shoot, hunt, fish or set a trap, a breathless Glover, clearly having fun with this Bando Stone character, answers no.

“I can sing,” he insists proudly. “You’re useless,” Allain’s blank-faced character then replies with scorn. The trio can only move about the tropical island at night as he’s told by the son that’s when the monsters “come out.”

“A little creepy, but that’s fine,” Bando Stone responds rather unconvincingly.

An official synopsis for Bando Stone & The New World is not yet available, but Glover’s character goes up against a stable of creepy computer-generated animals in the movie. The trailer includes the track “Lithonia,” which will be released on July 2.

Bando Stone & The New World was written by Evi Wilder, and is produced by RCA Records and Childish Gambino through Glover’s new production company, Gilga. No commercial release date is included along with the trailer.

Producer (he preferred the term “engineer”) and musician Steve Albini passed away last week at the age of 61 after suffering a heart attack. Albini was the man at the recording console for Nirvana’s In Utero, the Pixies’ Surfer Rose and Page and Plant’s Walking into Clarksdale, along with dozens of albums recorded over the past 30 years.

In addition to his musical activities, Albini was an accomplished cook and poker player, not to mention a world-class wiseass. Last year, he took to Twitter in order to share his thoughts on Steely Dan, prefacing his remarks by writing, “I will always be the kind of punk who shits on Steely Dan.” Among the litany of complaints: “‘They spent three weeks on the guitar solo…’ Three weeks of watching guitar players give it their all while doing bumps and hitting the talkback, ‘More Egyptian but keep it in the pocket…’” Followed by: “Music made for the sole purpose of letting the wedding band stretch out a little.” Rest easy, you magnificent bastard.

    Ticket Alert
The big news this week is that Childish Gambino (actor / director / writer / comedian / singer Donald Glover’s rap identity) will perform at Toyota Center on Sunday, September 8, in support of his new album Atavista. Presales are in progress, with the general ticket sale beginning on Friday.

Popmeister Marshall Crenshaw (“Someday, Someway”) will be touring this summer to celebrate “40+ Years in Showbiz!” Catch him on Friday, August 23, at the Heights Theater, with Kelly Willis opening.

America (“Sister Golden Hair,” “Horse with No Name”) has just announced its “Ride On” tour, which will make a stop at the Smart Financial Centre on Sunday, September 1. Tickets are on sale now, with VIP / Meet and Greet packages available.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band will play a concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Woodlands at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Friday, October 18. The show is free, and you can pre-register for “priority access” before the tickets are made available to the general public in August. Fellow north-side native Hayes Carll will open.

This just in: Police guitarist Andy Summers will perform on Wednesday, November 6, at the House of Blues, bringing with him a multimedia extravaganza featuring his music and photography, a production dubbed “The Cracked Lens + A Missing String.” Presales begin today, with the general sale on Friday.

    Concerts This Week
The focus is on music from Mexico this week at Toyota Center. International superstar Luis Miguel (“El Sol de México”) will perform for two nights, this evening and Thursday. On Sunday, it’s Pepe Aguilar, who made his first concert appearance when he was three years old, performing at Madison Square Garden with his parents, Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre. Aguilar’s Toyota Center show will continue the family tradition, with his children Leonardo and Ángela joining in an exploration of the clan’s history in Regional Mexican music.
If your boots are itching to scoot, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is the place to be on Friday, when Brooks and Dunn bring their “Reboot” tour to town. The country duo has notched 20 No. 1 hits, so the challenge in assembling the set list will be what to leave out. David Lee Murphy and Ernest (see Clint Hale’s story in the Press) will open.
You’ve gotta love the blueprint for Uli Jon Roth’s show on Saturday at the Dosey Doe. Roth will open the evening with a set of electric guitar versions of classical pieces by Vivaldi and others, plus Roth’s “Metamorphosis Concerto.” That will be followed by a TED talk which presents an overview of his new book, In Search of the Alpha Law, and a set with Roth’s full band. And this will all take place in a 150-year-old barn, with a chicken fried steak available for dinner. No place but Houston, baby!
For over 30 years, Chris Isaak has maintained a career in both music and film, releasing the hit singles “Wicked Game” and “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” while appearing in features like Married to the Mob and Silence of the Lambs. Isaak will perform on Tuesday at the House of Blues. ‘Cause Knowledge is Power: Isaak is close friends with singer Stevie Nicks and director David Lynch.

Social media is back at it again with the hilarious memes–this time, clowning Donald Glover‘s vintage Saint Laurent suit that stood out (for obvious reasons) at this year’s 2024 Met Gala.

As previously reported, this year’s gala celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” with a “Garden Of Time” dress code that appeared to confuse guests based on some of the not-sure-if serious fashions.

While a few celebs nailed the theme (shoutout to Zendaya, Teyana Taylor, Janelle Monaé, and Tyla), others (like Donald Glover) found themselves trending for all of the wrong reasons.

Glover, who brought classic Motown vibes with a splash of Mount Calvary Baptist church to the Met, sparked hilarity for looking like the sixth Heartbeat on his way to Sunday service in Detroit.

Interestingly, the suit was included in GQ Australia‘s best-dressed list despite getting roasted online.

“I’m all about a baggy silhouette, and this Saint Laurent look on Donald Glover is the perfect fit,” said GQ Australia‘s Head of Shopping Angelica Xidias. “I didn’t immediately love the hue of the suit, however, I quickly warmed up to it. What I do like is the shade of Glover’s chocolate brown shirt. Undisputedly the colour of the season.”

This latest meme wave comes just months after the Mr & Mrs. Smith star trended for his portrayal of 21 Savage in the ‘parody’ trailer for American Dream: The 21 Savage Story.

How did you feel about Donald Glover’s vintage Saint Laurent suit? Fly or BYE? Tell us down below and enjoy the funniest (and pettiest) Donald Glover memes from the 2024 Met Gala on the flip.

Are you ready for the new Mr.& Mrs. Smith?

Donald Glover is entering his action hero era in Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith–a “relatable” reimagining of the 2005 film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as dueling assassins hired by competing agencies to take each other out.

In this version, two lonely strangers (Glover as John Smith and Maya Erskine as Jane Smith) land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan, per the official synopsis.

“The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone.

Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”

    Check out the trailer below:

Created by Francesca Sloane (Atlanta) and Donald Glover, the buzzy series boasts a star-studded guest cast including Michaela Coel, Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, Úrsula Corberó, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Parker Posey, and Wagner Moura.

“Why do people even get married anymore? Half of it ends in divorce — what’s the purpose?” said Glover in an interview with EW.

“Let’s make a show dealing with relationships, but from this point of view, centering more on really what a marriage is and trust and teamwork and loneliness and all that stuff.

I just wanted it to be something that spoke to people right now because in a time of abundance, why do we feel lonely? The movie wasn’t about that.”

In celebration of the series, matchmaking maven/relationship expert Dr. Stacii Jae Johnson hosted a special Speed Dating event that brought together eligible Atlanta singles for laughs, potential connections, and maybe-marriage (orrr not).
